By the numbers but cute
rivertam2616 March 2020
I really wanted to love this movie. As a gay man I cling to any quality lgbtq films especially when they are mainstream. I was blessed with Love, Simon and since that was a minor hit I was expecting a lot more movies to come out. So this option from freeform is appreciated and it's cute but it's very by the numbers and the leads don't have the best chemistry. That being said it's about a guy named Sam who runs into Harry sporadically over the years. They have a little bit of a love connection and eventually, well you know. It's all fairly formulaic but I hope it's successful and opens the door to better films.

A gay Romcom
quiqueperique27 July 2020
It is a romcom! That's it, that is the review.

Do not expect anything but an hour of a cute, somewhat cringy, cheesy, cookie cutter light hearted romcom but with gay people and I ain't saying that is a bad thing I really like it

Is this what a Romcom is meant to feel like?
filmstudiesstudent24 August 2020
All throughout my childhood i always enjoyed watching romantic comedies with my mother and sister... i am sure you know the ones i'm talking about, from 27 Dresses to The Proposal, i have probably watched them all more times than i can possibly count. although i enjoyed watching them, i would constantly find myself looking and yearning for something that i could enjoy but also connect and relate to in ways all my straight friends did. I always wondered what if there was some LGBT representation, a queer Rom-Com? well i can proudly say i now understand that connect i constantly imagined of seeing on screen. This film was an pleasant surprise that i would recommend watching if you want an queer twist on a classic romantic film. I'm definitely not saying this is the greatest film ever... but i am saying its refreshing and beautiful story. i would certainly watch this film again. great plot and narrative kept me invested and engaged through the entire film.

I loved it! The romance has such a natural progression that it was so believable at the point of climax that I got so emotional I cried. So well done!

A Gay "When Harry Met Sally"
initiator9217 February 2020
At it's heart, The "Thing About Harry" is a remake of the classic movie "When Harry Met Sally" but with two gay men. That's not a bad thing, but it's very similar to the original film in many ways. The "will they or won't they" dynamic was played out way too long for my taste and some of the character development lacked. Otherwise, it was a sweet movie with a terrific message. I mean we're allowed to have somewhat unbelievable rom-coms too, right? I enjoyed watching this movie and recommend it to others. Kudos to Freeform for making this movie. Let's hope more follow.

Just what I needed
crazywrapbobjohnson4 March 2020
Loved this from beginning to end. Totally feel good movie. We need more. there are too many dark, angst filled LGBT movies. We need things to build us up and make us feel good about ourselves. Thank you Peter Paige!

Delivers on exactly what you would expect, although inconsistent and choppy
Mr_Bill_Chambers_DeLarge17 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Let's start off by saying that what the movie represents is a step in the right direction. With all of the cheesy Hallmark, Freeform and Lifetime movies ou there, it is refreshing to see one with a gay lead. I can't say that I expect movies like these to be groundbreaking, but expect them to deliver on their promise. There are days where you simply enjoy sitting on a couch watching sappy romantic made-for-TV comedies and "The Thing About Harry" is just that.

What works: the movie is entertaining and doesn't take itself too seriously, so it provides laughs and a few thought provoking scenes. I also enjoyed the exploration of both gay and pansexual characters which in turn made the story more interesting and provided more drama and conflict between the protagonists.

What doesn't work: for a movie with such a short running time, it tries to fit way too much and doesn't completely develop any plot to its fullest. The movie focuses so much on what doesn't work about their relationship, that it fails to give time to highlight the positive. By the time they realize that they have fallen for each other, it comes almost out of left field. While I was rooting for them, I kept questioning why these two guys were so head-over-heels for one another if their relationship wasn't explored as much as it could have. This is turn makes the pacing of the story feel choppy, with too many time lapses to ever fully develop the story and romance (especially the rushed climax).

Although the movie comes across more as a collection of scenes glued together by a thin plot rather than a fully developed story, I can't say I disliked it. It delivers on being a cheesy romantic comedy that shows just how far we have come along in the world.

Adorably well done
jessegar-7437827 February 2020
I loved this movie. It was so cute and entertaining. All the actors were wonderful and the two lead men had great chemistry. It was nice to see a gay romcom with depth and a positive storyline. I hope it's out on dvd so I can watch it all the time. A must see, feel good movie.

The Thing About Harry
JoBloTheMovieCritic22 February 2020
6/10 - just what you'd expect from a rom-com TV movie - cheesy, cute storylines with some iffy acting (I mean Karamo needs to never "act"again) - but I really didn't care for the time skips throughout the movie

I loved Harry
mudgeboy4 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This will be a fun movie for a lot of people and it started out that way for me. I really loved Harry right from the start and i thought Sam would grow on me, but just the opposite happened. As the movie progressed Sam became more and more annoying -- he's always right, everything has to be on his terms, and you have to play by his rules. For example, at the beginning of the movie Sam told Harry that he would pick him up at 7 sharp. Since Harry was 20 minutes late Sam was going to leave without him; then Sam was annoyed that Harry wanted to stop for coffee -- this at the start of a 9 hour trip.

Sam was constantly telling everyone what was wrong with them and he did this in the meanest of ways. Of course both Harry and Sam had faults but Harry owned up to his and, on occasion, apologized. Not so with Sam. And at the end of the movie Harry makes an apology and confession of love and then they go home and make love. However, the next morning Harry tells Sam that he's got the job offer of his dreams in LA; this infuriates Sam because Harry didn't tell Sam sooner, when they had just got back together. So of course they get together at the end because Harry gives up the job of his dreams.

And frankly Sam wasn't all that. The really hot guy is clearly Harry, yet people are always wanting to date Sam!! No accounting for taste. If you want someone to rule you're life, Sam's your guy.

The thing about Harry review
maddiebuggie27 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
At first I didn't know if this was gonna be a good watch. On that day I stopped at the point where they had come back from the road trip and see if their friends wedding. I thought it was moving a bit too fast at the time. Then I took a few days off from watching this movie to come back to the movie so I could finish it and see how I really thought about the movie. By the time I finished that movie that second sit down to finish watching it. I loved the story it was so much better then I thought it would ever be. This is a lgbt/ gay/ boy love story. I thought the way they did the story where it felt like they were getting to know each other and finally being together after a couple of years was great way of doing it. The main complaint that I have with most romance movies is it too short and they made the seem like the two boy known each other for a week and already in love with each other. That not how love works in real life. I loved that this story fixed that problem by taking us into a lot of the moments they were together throwught the couple of years before they started dating. One of my scenes from this movie was the ending we're they were either taking care of a baby for a friend or they had adopted a baby if there own and were walking into the city. It was such a cute scene. I also liked the scene where Harry come to his job and told everyone he loved him and that he wasn't gonna go anywhere. Then Harry kiss him. That was a cute scene too. I recommend this story to everyone.

I really wanted to enjoy it BUT
mcgonigal_cfc_714 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The movie begins with Sam hating Harry but things soon change when Harry tells him he is pansexual. This one revelation makes Sam quickly change his mind about Harry? If anything, this is quite off putting as Sam disregards all his hatred for Harry once he realises that he is sexually attracted to the same sex as him. The movie tries to portray a love story, however, it completely falls flat & showcases that none of this 'friend group' can be trusted around each other's partners. Stasia is best friends with Sam but still hooks up with Harry, then she also gets with Zach. Zach's girlfriend was friends with them all but still Stacia ends up with Zach, I think Zach's original girlfriend had a lucky escape! In the end when Harry gets with Sam it's a complete cringefest & all the romance that could have been is completely lost.

Overall, an easy watch but too much drama to get to the punchline & none of them really love each other. I could imagine if there was a part 2 to this Harry would definitely be with one of Sam's other friends & Stasia would probably be with them too.

It's cute and all but
Sindi2519 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It is a cute movie but I feel like the plot is so messy for no reason. Sam constantly belittles Harry wether it is Harry's career choice, job or love life. Also Sam had no reason to get that mad if he claimed over and over he had no feelings for Harry. The romantic moment at the end was so dull. It was long overdue so it had no impact at all. Overall wish it was better.

Decent movie
jrluvsmileyc26 February 2020
Typical rom com, not the best acting, just because you can remember lines doesn't mean you can act. Sometimes less is more, the main character CANNOT act at all. Didn't care for how it's so approving of gender topics and very progressive but still had some few words where the main character judges people's appearance. Overall the story is cute not great not bad.

You have to rate a movie for what it was meant to be. "The Thing About Harry" is a romcom. It is cute and fun. For that I give it a 10.

Very cute, pretty unrealistic, fairly cliche
codygdietrich20 March 2020
It's the type of film id describe as warm, fuzzy and sweet, and the little goth punk emo kid in me hates myself for enjoying it. I'm not a fan of romantic comedies because so often they are about as creative as cooperate holiday cards. This one was different partly because the two leads work so well together in camera and the supporting characters actually contribute to the plot line, unlike most romantic comedies where the supporting actors are less supporting are more so talking extras. The one complaint I do have is that it jumps into the future sometimes it's a couple days, and sometimes a couple months and sometimes a year or more. So you hear a bit about their past before the movie starts and they are in college and by the end of the movie they are probably around 30 and could still pass for a 16 year old. I understand some people look young until they go grey but it is just ridiculous that this love story takes over a decade to play out.

A supressed love

This delightful comedy/lite drama story would make a fun present for those into romance stories!

Nothing heavy here. Plot is paper thin. But the story is easy to like while watching. Then you will most likely forget all about it.

It's so sweet and adorable
Gordon-118 March 2020
I love this romantic comedy! The characters are very likable, especially Sam, who reminds me of a young Jake Gyllenhaal. Stasia is really cool as well. The production is very well done, the sets are great, the clothes are nice, and just about everything is done very well. I love this sweet and adorable film!

Ultimately disappointing
jbwest2120 February 2021
Going into this, I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, just some lighthearted romantic fluff. This movie had so much potential, and as there is such a shortage of lgbt rom coms, I was left super disappointed.

The plot and most of the casting was fine. I was even totally okay with the badly written dialogue and over acting (it often comes with the low budget rom com territory). My only complaint was how unlikeable the main protagonist was. Just a giant, turtleneck-wearing, walking red flag... Jealous, obsessive, possessive, and oftentimes downright mean. He's supposed to be progressive but on multiple occasions he shames his love interest for sleeping with multiple people. He's a terrible best friend, judges and criticizes other men for their looks constantly, and is just overall controlling and unpleasant.

With all the glowing reviews about how cute and great the relationship in this was, I was left really confused. This movie left a bad taste in my mouth for sure. Ultimately disappointing

Finally a relatable RomCom for guys
utgidget16 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If anything the movie could of been longer than it was by the end I wanted more. This was the first legit movie with two gay characters at the front of the story that reminded me of experiences I have been through in life. It was actually about true love and finding your soul mate instead of just the usual gay guys randomly hooking up. Of course there were parts of the movie that had meeting up with some guy off an app and typical stereotypes of gay guys but that's just unfortunately a part of the lifestyle so of course it was included but the major focus was about finding true love even when mistakes are made. It's not easy to find a soul mate for anyone in life but the journey these two characters take to realize that the love of there life was in front of there face was more realistic and believable and honestly gave me hope that real love between two guys can be attained. Growing up there wasn't movies like this which makes you think there is something wrong with you as a person and no one should feel this way so thank you to freeform and the makers of this movie for giving young gay guys who are coming of age a movie that doesn't make them feel different or left out.

Time to boycott lazy writing
laurach-1792819 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie gets points because of how loveable harry was. The main character however, is not very likeable and borderline miserable. It is very hard to relate to him and his underdeveloped emotional intelligence. Seems like the writers are taking the easy way out (again) and creating conflict out of thin air. Almost everytime someone is getting angry over something that would've been a simple conversation in the real world. There are so many inconsistencies in the character's actions that it just makes for a confusing and unrelatable movie. People don't act like this in real life, good ones at least. I just don't think anyone would actually go for someone as miserable and hurtful as Sam. Harry deserves so much better. Anyways, if you're wondering if you should watch this, you should because you'll literally fall in love with Harry and the rest of the characters.

Lacking quality and charm
astonmatters28 August 2020
Yes, this movie is cute at times. That said, there are a lot of problems with it: It is full of clichees, the lead character is annoying and not likeable, the acting is mediocre at best, the entire movie feels kinda choppy ... I could go on. Intentions were good with this one, the result however is lacking quality and charm. If you are up for a cute and cheesy lgbtq rom com, you should rather opt for Love, Simon and dismiss Harry.
