It has been more than 15 years since Guy Ritchie released his Sherlock Holmes offering with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. A lot has changed in the film industry since then, with the 59-year-old becoming a mega star thanks to his pivotal involvement in the MCU.
Now that Downey Jr. has hung up his Iron Man suit, he is interested in making a third offering in the Sherlock Holmes film series. This is reportedly in the pipeline, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet. It has been announced that there will be at least one spinoff series, though, which could be set to reinvigorate the franchise.
Detective Remains at Forefront of Popular Culture
There are rumours that there will be two spinoff series, which are due to be released on HBO Max. This could be a clever move from the streaming service, as the Sherlock Holmes brand is massive in popular culture.

Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett were among the key creatives behind Batman: The Animated Series. The 90s animated series was a major hit and set the foundation for several other DC projects that eventually took the shape of the fan-favorite Dcau. Since then, the duo has continued working on DC properties, with and without each other.

The Batman was a refreshing change in the turbulent DC Extended Universe. Taking a different approach from earlier DC and Batman movies, this 2022 flick starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayn is essentially a noir-style mystery that highlights the superhero’s detective abilities in addition to his physical prowess.
Not only did it create a bleak new Gotham City, but it also featured some of the best performances from Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), and of course, Pattinson (Batman).
However, the film was met with some skepticism following Christopher Wozniak, a screenwriter and former freelance artist for DC Comics, filing a lawsuit against Warner Bros. for allegedly stealing the story from his script, The Ultimate Riddle.

Well, the plaintiff has not been pleased with the verdict, as the US Judge ruled that Matt Reeves’ helmed flick was not plagiarized.

But going by what Farrell has hinted about The Penguin, this rating might just have to be modified for the show. Debunking fun and exciting rumors is a dirty job sometimes, but someone has to do it. It stands to reason that a movie like "The Batman: Part II" would attract plenty of attention and interest, given the accolades that rolled in immediately following star Robert Pattinson's highly-anticipated introduction as the grungiest and most emo version of Bruce Wayne/Batman we've seen on the big screen yet. Director Matt Reeves didn't just helm another successful reboot for the most popular DC superhero while putting his own unique spin on it, but he did so by assembling a cast full of our greatest actors around. With stars like Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, and even Paul Dano surrounding Pattinson, it's no surprise that fans would look forward to what other talent might be coming on board for the sequel.

Due to arrive this year, The Penguin, Warner’s TV spin-off from The Batman, is “incredibly violent” and “twisted” says title star Colin Farrell.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman wasn’t exactly sunshine and rainbows, so it follows that its upcoming spin-off series, simply called The Penguin, will be similarly dark.
In fact, if we’re interpreting recent quotes from title star Colin Farrell correctly, the series could be even more withering and nightmarish than the movie. Talking to MovieZine (via Deadline), Farrell said that filming had wrapped on the series a couple of weeks ago, and that “It’s dark… really dark.”
It’s really heavy, I think, it certainly was doing it,” he said. “Which is not to say I didn’t have fun, I had an amazing time doing it, but it’s incredibly violent.”

The Penguin trailer offers a glimpse into the forthcoming installment of The Batman saga ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The latest trailer for The Penguin sees Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot, alias Penguin. The trailer delves into the DC villain’s contemplation of the posthumous recognition bestowed upon a local gangster by the community during his upbringing, prompting Cobblepot to ponder the significance of such acknowledgement. “Can you imagine being remembered like that?” Cobblepot queries an off-screen character. The trailer doesn’t spill much about the story, but it does give us quick peeks at Cristin Milioti playing Sofia Falcone and Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni.

Colin Farrell as The Penguin was one of the most terrifying characters in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The way he walked, talked, and acted was enough for many to be convinced that he was truly the best Penguin that DC fans had ever seen. While his acting is to be praised, it is truly the makeup that helped him transform into the notorious crime lord.

Yet, some fans expressed why the production would hire Farrell and transform him into somebody unrecognizable instead of hiring a talented actor with similar looks as Oswald Cobblepot. A pretty viable point, but once fans see the BTS video of Farrell’s transformation, they will certainly appreciate not only the actor but also Matt Reeves’s vision.

While The Joker may be the most iconic and memorable comic book antagonist in the world today, the depiction of Oswald Cobblepot in the 2022 masterpiece The Batman by Collin Farrell pushed the character’s popularity to the next level.
Thus, seeing just how revered the character became with his introduction in the film, Warner Bros. decided that he deserved his spin-off series to further explore him.

And thankfully this time, the star was granted his wish to smoke cigars on set and screen for The Penguin, something that the star wasn’t allowed to do when he was working with filmmaker Matt Reeves on the movie since WB had a no-smoking policy in place.
The reason why Farrell wanted to smoke was to bring his character closer to the comic-accurate recreation of Cobblepot, who is always seen with a cigar in his mouth.

Max’s “Batman” spinoff “The Penguin” is produced by “The Batman” writer/director Matt Reeves, with Dylan Clark executive producing. Colin Farrell reprises his role of corrupt nightclub owner Oz Cobb from Reeves’ 2022 feature starring Robert Pattinson as the titular superhero.
Following the events of the film which saw most of Oswald’s gang members either killed or incarcerated, Oswald is climbing the ranks in underground organized crime. The cast is rounded out by Cristin Milioti, who portrays Sofia, daughter of John Turturro’s mafia boss Carmine Falcone, and Theo Rossi, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, and David H. Numerous DC-based projects are currently in development, with much attention focused on Gunn’s Dcu and his upcoming ‘Creature Commandos’ & ‘Superman.’ However, it’s easy to overlook the Elseworlds projects, including ‘The Batman’ film series and several others. Among these, the next big release is the live-action series ‘The Penguin’.
Recently, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced the show’s release date. We can anticipate ‘The Penguin’ to hit Max in Q3 of 2024, meaning between July and September of that year.
Now Sebastian O’Hara, Production Assistant, shared on X that the trailer for the show is complete. He mentioned that he just finished watching it, so we can expect the trailer to be released for the general public soon.

Most viewers of The Batman would have been unaware that Colin Farrell was portraying Oswald Cobblepot if it had not been revealed ahead of time that he was playing Penguin. Thanks to hours spent every day in the makeup chair, Farrell’s portrayal of the Gotham City supervillain in the movie is totally unrecognizable. Even with his limited screen time, the character stole the show in a few moments, and a lot of fans believe Penguin’s role in this film was perfect.
It is worth noting that, in order to bring such a stunning character to life on screen, Farrell, 47, “fought valiantly”, but he wasn’t able to get ‘one special’ prop for his character. Yes, we are referring to his renowned cigar.

Sometimes, when actors find themselves the focus of a particularly passionate fandom, they reject it. Look at Harrison Ford constantly playing down the importance of "Star Wars" or Robert Pattinson and his open disdain for the "Twilight" series. Which is why it's nice when an actor shares in fans' joy for a particularly beloved performance. Case in point: Danny DeVito and his role as Penguin in "Batman Returns."
Tim Burton's 1992 expressionist masterpiece remains the best Batman movie ever made, and DeVito is a big part of that legacy. The "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" star delivered a stunningly committed performance as Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin, managing to make the deformed "penguin man of the sewers" so wretchedly evil and yet, at times, sympathetic. The abandoned son of a well-to-do couple commits some truly heinous acts throughout "Returns" and yet you still feel a pang of sadness for the old boy.

Batman is one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time. The character has been immortalized, and various actors over the years, including Robert Pattinson, have breathed life into Bruce Wayne on the big screen. Pattinson’s iteration of Wayne was memorable, and his collaboration with Matt Reeves paid dividends, as The Batman was a massive success.
Naturally, Warner Brothers greenlit its sequel, and Pattinson is set to don the cape once more in The Batman 2. However, DC fans will have to wait a bit longer since the release of the film has been pushed back to 2026

Originally set for release in 2025, it has been announced by Warner Bros. today that hotly anticipated sequel The Batman Part II will now be releasing in theaters much later.
Robert Pattinson’s Batman returns to theaters on October 2, 2026.
Matt Reeves will return to write and direct the sequel. Additionally, we recently learned that the sequel’s script is being written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin (The Batman).
The Batman was a huge box office hit for DC & WB back in 2022, the latest live action take on the iconic Caped Crusader crossing $770 million at the worldwide box office.
No plot details for The Batman 2 are available at this time, but a deleted scene from the first movie suggests we could be seeing more of Barry Keoghan‘s Joker down the road.
A spinoff series centered on Colin Farrell’s “Penguin” is also coming soon.

The first trailer for Apple TV+’s Colin Farrell vehicle Sugar has been released, putting the star in the role of detective and under the direction of City of God’s Fernando Meirelles.
Here is the official synopsis of Sugar, per Apple: “Starring and executive produced by Farrell, “Sugar” is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture, and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award-nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. Since he made his Hollywood debut in the 2000 Vietnam War drama "Tigerland," Colin Farrell's career has had some downs and some ups. All in all, though, he's largely outgrown his 2000s playboy reputation and is deservedly recognized as one of the best movie stars we've got. Farrell's got the eloquent soul of an artist, the way only an Irishman does.
After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.
He plays Oz Cobblepot in the Max series "Penguin," spinning out of his supporting role in 2022's "The Batman." Before he returns onscreen as the Penguin, though, he's going to star in (and executive produce) "Sugar" for competing streaming service Apple TV+.

Whether you loved The Batman (2022) or thought it was overhyped, it's hard to find anyone who didn't at least enjoy Colin Farrell's unique take on the Penguin.
So, when it came time to pitch a spin-off, Farrell's scene-stealing crime boss seemed the natural choice. He steals your attention anytime he's on the screen, and who doesn't love an epic crime drama?
Details on the new TV series following Oswald Cobblepot are scant at present, but we've managed to dig up a bit of info to whet the appetite.
Has The Penguin Been Greenlit?
Yes, The Penguin is in post-production as of the time of this writing, so go ahead and get excited. This isn't one of those things they announce, and then everyone forgets about it; it's actually happening.
Filming has already wrapped, and now it's simply a matter of waiting for the release date.

There are plenty of DC-based projects currently in development, and while all eyes are on Gunn’s Dcu and his upcoming ‘Creature Commandos’ & ‘Superman: Legacy’ we occasionally forget that Elseworlds, which ‘The Batman’ film series and several other upcoming projects are a part of, are doing their own thing. The next big thing is ‘The Penguin’ live-action series.
‘The Penguin,’ created by Lauren LeFranc for Max is based on the DC Comics character and is connected to the movie ‘The Batman’ released in 2022, focusing on the Penguin’s rise in Gotham City’s criminal world. Colin Farrell reprises his role as the Penguin, with Cristin Milioti also starring. Development started in 2021, and filming began in 2023 but was briefly halted due to a strike. It wrapped up in early 2024.

Robert Pattinson’s Batman could have been a part of James Gunn’s Dcu but has since been labeled an Elseworld story, distinct from what will be offered in the Dcu. However, despite the more grounded approach that the character and the universe have taken, it is possible to tie it in with characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and the wider DC Universe.
Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman
Matt Reeves’ version of The Dark Knight will exist in its own little universe for the time being. A different version of Batman will be part of the wider Dcu, one that will make its debut with Damien Wayne as its Robin. However, should the need arise to include Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the mix, multiple avenues are afforded to the Dcu, to stitch the Reeves-verse with the wider Dcu.

Take a look at actor Colin Farrell, unrecognizable as the star of “The Penguin” live-action TV series, currently shooting, created by Lauren LeFranc and directed by Craig Zobel, based on DC Comics’ characters, streaming Fall 2024 on Max:

‘…who became a disfigured crime lord and the former chief lieutenant of crime boss 'Carmine Falcone' …
‘…who is on the rise to becoming a criminal kingpin in his own right..."
Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, 'Penguin' debuted in "Detective Comics" #58 (December 1941).
He is often presented as a gentleman of crime...

When Matt Reeves released :a[The Batman]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-batman/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} in cinemas last year, it didn’t just unleash a brand new Dark Knight on the world – it began the building of a whole new Gotham. Bruce Wayne’s beloved city often shape-shifts along with the material, whether depicted as a gaudy neon-lit ‘toon-scape (the Joel Schumacher Bat-flicks), a thrumming contemporary urban environment (:a[The Dark Knight trilogy]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/dark-knight-trilogy-complete-story-of-christopher-nolan-batman/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}), or festering with a scuzzy ‘70s New Yorkian grime (:a[Joker]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/joker/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}). Audiences will have to wait a little bit longer to check into “The White Lotus” Season 3.
The third installment of the Emmy-winning HBO anthology series will arrive in 2025, according to chief content officer Casey Bloys.
“‘White Lotus’ Season 3 probably would have been in ’24, that’s pushing to ’25,” Bloys said during a press conference. “It’s shows that we’ve had on the runway and we’re in the middle of shooting, obviously.”
Bloys continued with further updates, “‘Penguin’ would have been in the spring, so we’ve had to adjust across the board. The ‘It’ prequel we’re working on…’Welcome to Derry’ — we had that that scheduled previously for Halloween of ’24. That’s likely pushing into ’25.”
Pending the resolution of the SAG-AFTRA strike, “Welcome to Derry” will return to production in spring of 2024. “The Last of Us” Season 2 will shoot then as well.
“The White Lotus” Season 3 will be set in Thailand.

With Hollywood’s superhero movies experiencing “multiverse fever,” we’ve seen all kinds of new appearances from actors who’ve been in decades-old superhero films, including the meeting of all of the on-screen Spider-Men in No Way Home and Michael Keaton’s return as Batman for The Flash. Danny DeVito won rave reviews for his performance as Penguin in 1992’s Batman Returns, and if Keaton can make a comeback as Batman, DeVito says he’d absolutely be open to playing Penguin once again. DeVito once talked to us about the reasons why he considered Penguin to be one of his favorite roles. Netflix’s decision to create an entire prequel about “Bridgerton” breakout Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) may have initially surprised audiences — but the series’ smash-hit success might stir things up as much as its royal protagonist.
In the week since its May 4 premiere, “Queen Charlotte” was watched for 148.28 million hours, becoming the top English-language series on the platform in the U.S. (and entering the top 10 in 91 countries). It scored high with audiences and critics, and the six episodes (including a feature-length finale) were devoured by “Bridgerton” fans around the world, proving the steamy, semi-fictional Regency world to be even more fruitful than expected.

Regarding villains terrorizing Gotham, few rule the streets with the creep factor of the Penguin. The stout, bird-like baddie is a tortured soul. In Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, Danny DeVito played the character akin to a rejected circus freak with abandonment issues and an axe to grind. In Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Colin Farrell taps into Penguin’s aspirations to rule Gotham with an iron fist, controlling who lives, who dies, and who patrols the alleyways. Devito and Farrell’s versions are wildly different. Still, they both crave control over Gothamites, while Batman looms like a shadow over their wicked dreams. As a part of this week’s Just for Variety, the outlet caught up with DeVito, who commented on whether he’ll play the Penguin again and what he thinks of Farrell’s version of Batman’s avian adversary.

As has been teased for months, HBO Max will be revamped as Max.
During a Warner Bros. Discovery press event on Wednesday afternoon, it was announced that the new streaming service will launch on May 23 in the U.S.
The aim of removing HBO is to showcase the breadth of the brands under the Warner Bros. Discovery banner.
Max will be home to a wealth of new series, including a new series set in the Big Bang Theory universe.
It was revealed Wednesday that a new comedy series "derived from" the hit comedy is in the works.
Chuck Lorre is working on the project for the streaming service.
The announcement is a surprise because the Big Bang Theory universe remains alive thanks to Young Sheldon, which is set to continue for a seventh season.
Meanwhile, a new series set in the Game of Thrones universe has been ordered to series.
