When used to DJ around Bradford, England, in the mid-2010s, he noticed something about his hometown. “It’s the land that time forgot,” he says, with affection and resignation. “Everyone else is up to date, and we’re still spinning a record that’s 25 years old. Certain tunes, like Robin S.’s ‘Show Me Love,’ they still go off in a Bradford nightclub like it’s just come out. And when you start playing the new stuff, they didn’t like it.”

As major record labels drill down on signing and breaking as many artists as possible, Cmnty Culture — a 1-year-old indie label, founded by eight-time Grammy-winning songwriter Philip Lawrence, A&r exec Malik Rasheed, and marketing executive Chief Johnson — wants to do the very opposite.
Cmnty’s goal is to cultivate a small but potent group of artists who believe in, as the label’s name suggests, community. While many other music companies are billing themselves as artist-first ventures these days, Cmnty promises that it’s deeply invested in the concept:...

“My temper was explosive… perhaps I was trying to level with my fists what I assumed fate had put above me.” – To Hell and Back, Audie Murphy, 1949
A remarkably self-aware assessment for such an angry young man. To hear him tell it, Audie Murphy came out of the cradle itching for a fight—when Pearl Harbor was attacked, he got one. He was only 16 at the time so he marched down to the recruiting center and lied about his age. In 1945 Murphy left the Army as the most-decorated soldier of World War II. In 1971 his twin-engine plane crashed into a mountainside in Virginia’s Roanoke County killing everyone on board. In the 26 years between the end of the war...

In the summer of 1994, Forrest Gump was released in the United States to wide acclaim, becoming the fourth highest grossing film at that time and winning six Oscars, including Best Picture. Roger Ebert wrote, ‘I’ve never met anyone like Forrest Gump in a movie before, and for that matter I’ve never seen a movie quite like Forrest Gump.’ It is curious to read that from Ebert, because just ten months prior in September 1993, a film called Bad Boy Bubby was shown at the Venice Film Festival.
Put simply, Bad Boy Bubby is Forrest Gump on bath salts, imbued with pitch-black humour instead of sickly treacle. While Gump opens in a leafy Savannah park to Alan Silvestri’s melodic score, Bubby begins in a hellish room with no natural light and filthy grey walls, which is...

ESPN’s “The Last Dance” has treated Michael Jordan fans to hours of behind-the-scenes footage from the Chicago Bulls 1997-1998 season — Jordan’s last with the team. Among the docuseries’ most memorable moments — so far — is a cringeworthy locker room exchange between a noticeably nervous Jerry Seinfeld and then-Bulls coach Phil Jackson.
Seinfeld told Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday that he hasn’t watched “The Last Dance” yet, but even he has heard about the moment where he’s laughing with Jordan and the team, and when Jackson walks into the room and says “Let’s go guys,” Seinfeld nervously says “Hey Phil,” and quickly moves to leave.
“I’m the last person to log on to that but I will get to it, I know, I will get to it,” Seinfeld told Kimmel via a video interview on Tuesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” quarantine edition. “I haven’t seen it yet,...

The socially-distanced NFL draft drew a record 15.6 million viewers across ABC, NFL Network and ESPN on Thursday.
That was up 37% from last year (11.4 million) and up 26% from the prior record of 12.4 million in 2014. Last year’s telecast also aired across NFL Network, ESPN and ABC, while 2014 did not feature ABC. This year, ESPN and NFL Network co-produced one broadcast that aired on both networks, while ABC produced its own telecast separately.
The NFL Draft continued a particularly strong week for ESPN, which has been hammered by the lack of live sports caused by the coronavirus pandemic-forced shutdown. On Sunday, the two-hour premiere of “The Last Dance” docuseries about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, drew the network’s best ratings ever for a documentary.

We’ll get to know a lot more about Dennis Rodman, one of the most eccentric personalities of the late-90s Chicago Bulls, when “The Last Dance” returns on Sunday.
Rodman was known as much for his rebounding prowess as he was for his constantly changing hair colors and WWE stunts. “Dennis Rodman, you’ll see next week, didn’t even pick up a basketball until his late teens. His background is staggeringly difficult,” Jason Hehir, the docuseries’ director, told TheWrap.
“You’ll see the kind of personalities that Michael had to manage on and off the court in that locker room.”

Sunday will also feature some of Jordan’s biggest playoff failures, most notably his battles with the “Bad Boy” Detroit Pistons, who won back-to-back titles in the late 1980s. The...

The most surprising name hidden in the liner notes of the Weeknd’s fourth studio album, After Hours, is Mario Winans. Best known for his 2004 classic “I Don’t Wanna Know,” Winans has since has written and produced on hits like CeCe Winans’s “Pray” and Kanye West’s “All Day,” but in recent years has settled into a behind-the-scenes role. It’s easy to see, within the bleak futurism of the Weeknd’s latest release, flashes of the classic R&b turns that WInans is known for — and nowhere...
