We’re big fans of writer/director Anthony Waller‘s riveting 1995 thriller Mute Witness (buy a copy at This Link) here at Arrow in the Head, which is why we even put together a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video on the film. You can watch that in the embed above. And since we’ve been doing our part in trying to let everyone know how good this movie is, we’re glad to hear that it’s about to receive new releases. Jinga Films has sold distribution rights to the restored cult classic to both Arrow Film and AMC Networks’ streaming platform Shudder!
Due to these sales, we can expect to see a new physical media release of Mute Witness from Arrow Video sometime in the near future. The movie will also be streaming on Shudder in the US, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Sometimes, covers are done best when they stay true to the original as much as possible. When it comes to Taylor Swift’s “Love Story,’” replicating its light tone and soft nature is clearly the best option to take. Case in point: Against the Current recorded a number of live cover sessions over the summer on tour, and just revealed their take on “Love Story” featuring Yellowcard.
Yellowcard automatically makes the cover immensely better, because even though Against the Current is already supported by their acoustic guitar and fantastic voice from vocalist Chrissy Costanza, you’re also treated to the addition of Yellowcard frontman Ryan Key and violinist Sean Mackin.
Mackin has been rocking the strings for Yellowcard since the group’s inception, and it’s made Yellowcard one of the most unique rock bands in the mainstream in recent memory. Mackin’s violin parts complement the Key and Costanza duo beautifully,...

★☆☆☆☆ In Peter Callahan's 2009 film Against the Current, Joseph Fiennes plays Paul Thompson, a depressed New Yorker with a tragedy in his recent past, who decides to swim down the Hudson from upstate to the sea. He enlists two friends Liz (Elizabeth Reaser) and Jeff (Justin Kirk), to accompany and support him on his Quixotic endeavour. Paul is not an athlete or a champion swimmer; he isn't doing it for charity or to raise awareness for some noble cause. In fact, as the film goes on, it becomes evident that his motivation is linked to the darkness from his past.

Ambitious and generally without a dull moment, the fourth Off Plus Camera International Festival of Independent Cinema unfurled from the 8th through the 17th of this month with little of the inconvenience and national tragedy that marked last year’s affair. Having been interrupted by the volcanic explosion that grounded planes across Europe last April and shortened by the tragic plane crash which killed an entire generation of Polish political and civic leaders, the third edition was a ragtag affair with few guests and an anarchic spirit that few festivals are able to generate. This year the festival was running at full speed, allowing its generally strong programming, immaculate hospitality and eclectic group of attendees to watch and mingle in relative comfort, although the overall vibe was perhaps more pedestrian than the previous event. Still it’s a sprawling event for such a young festival, with two large competitions, programs of Irish,...

First, the good news: Tonight’s American Idol Top 7 results-show telecast gave us one of the season’s better sing-out performances from a booted contestant. And, actually, if there was any bad news, you couldn’t read it on the face of Stefano Langone, who smiled and bounced like an enthusiastic boxer sitting on the Silver Stools of Doom, and then simply wanted to grab ahold of the mic and belt one out after Ryan Seacrest told him he was the contestant with the lowest number of viewer votes for “Songs from the 21st Century” week.

Tim Roth announced his next directing project at the Off Plus Camera International Festival of Independent Cinema in Krakow, Poland, where Roth was given the Against the Current achievement award. It will be an adaptation of Marc Parent's 1996 non-fiction book Turning Stones: My Days and Nights with Children at Risk, a collection of accounts of children in various situations of child abuse. The film hit's close to home for Roth, who was abused as a child. He directed The War Zone in 1999, which covered similar material.
According to THR, "Parent was a twentysomething from the Midwest who went to New York city to try to make it as an actor. He was unsuccessful in this endeavor, but joined an experimental social work unit at Emergency Children's Services. What followed was a series of situations in which Parent was called upon to protect children from abusive parents, up to and...

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Audio commentary by critic Gary Giddins; Excerpt from 1966 audio interview with Kubrick; 1979 interview with Douglas; New interviews with Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, and producer James B. So, I was able to see the first 70 minutes of Toy Story 3 this week.
Watching the movie begin, hearing the reactions of the college students who literally grew up with this franchise, I was worried something wasn’t going to be right. That there was going to be something there on the screen I could no longer identify with a decade after Toy Story 2 debuted in the theaters. I was shocked that it’s been fifteen years since the first installment came out, the number 95 pasted on the runaway train in the opening sequence feeling like a tender callback to that time.

Attention New Yorkers (or people who live somewhere near New York and from time to time travel to the city for a taste of some quality entertainment): The Sixth Annual Big Apple Film Festival begins tonight over at Tribeca Cinemas and runs through Saturday, November 7th. Named one of the "25 Coolest Film Festivals" by Moviemaker Magazine (partly because yours truly is heavily involved with all aspects of the festival, natch), this year's slate of over 100 different films looks to be their best yet.
Now this isn't some giant big city festival by any means; it's more of a small, intimate slice-of-ny-life sorta festival that supports and promotes homegrown talent. Tonight they're opening the festival with Against the Current, starring Joseph Fiennes, Elizabeth Reaser, Justin Kirk and Mary Tyler Moore -- and if you're one of the lucky ones in attendance, you'll spot a hottie Cinematical stud named Erik Davis hosting the post-screening Q&A.

Tina Mabry's "Mississippi Damned," an independent American production, won the Gold Hugo as the best film in the 2009 Chicago International Film Festival, and added Gold Plaques for best supporting actress (Jossie Thacker) and best screenplay (Mabry). The film's trailer and an interview with Mabry are linked at the bottom.

This year marks the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's exploration of 'his' river, and Peter Callahan's film Against the Current certainly functions as a stirring tribute to the stunning radiance and history of the river and the Hudson Valley. In what is essentially a three-hander starring Joseph Fiennes (currently in ABC's FlashForward), Elizabeth Reaser (a great actress when she's not playing Robert Pattinson's vampire Mom, Esme, in Twilight and New Moon), and Justin Kirk, (who you love on Weeds). The film starts when Fiennes' Paul Thompson decides he is going to accomplish one thing in his life, and that's swimming the length of the Hudson, from Troy, NY, to the Verrezano Bridge. His best friend Jeff Kane (Kirk), a bartender/aspiring actor, and Liz Clarke (Reaser), a schoolteacher, are along for the (very long) boat ride. And Mary Tyler Moore and Michelle Trachtenberg show up in small roles.

The rights to the film were acquired by the station for domestic distribution. Against The Current stars Weeds star Justin Kirk, Michelle Tractenberg, Mary Tyler Moore, and Joseph Fiennes (as well as, of course, Reaser). The film made a splash at this year's Sundance Film Festival where Reaser and Tractenberg talked about the film and its relation to a very sobering life matter here. - What would Cannes be without Fortissimo Films? Actually what would any of the other big festivals be without this kind of 'company'? They got a foursome of projects which I am eagerly awaiting to see from helmers Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, Kore-eda Hirokazu, Tsai Ming-Liang and a Latin American product from Michel Franco. Sadly, this will be a bitter sweet Cannes for the company with the passing of an industry vet Wouter Barendrecht, who was an anchor in bringing the best of Asian films to North American audiences. In the near future we can look forward to the next Todd Solondz and Stephan Elliott projects and a "Marley" docu around the corner. Sundance's 25th year event is remarkably quiet, almost unreal. Allowing a look at the reality, conversations actually can take place. The late night lounge is the place to see everyone after 10 and to talk more. Filmakers Bill Benenson and Eleonore Dailly, producer Gene Rosow and marketer Jeff Dowd hosted the Obama Inauguration party which also celebrated their film Dirt The Movie. Veteran Sundance community members, Nicole Guillemet, former director of Sundance, Paula Silver, Ira Deutschman, Susan Margolin, Todd McCarthy, Sasha Alpert, Mickey Cotrell and so many others bonded with joy as we all listened to the message delivered by President Obama. John Sloss's Cinetic party and William Morris Independent's parties were not as mobbed as in years past. The two films I have heard most praised are Push and The Cove. Latino film buzz is around Sin Nombre. Written and directed by Peter Bratt and starring his brother Benjamin Bratt and Jesse Borrego, La Mission and Don't Let Me Drown starring Yareli Arizmendi, who wrote and produced A Day Without a Mexican, one of the breakout Latino hits some years ago. I would most like to see Mark Stewart's Passing Strange, a Fairfax district Los Angeleno's work about "black folks passing as black folks" and other essentialist curiosities of American life as written up in Sundance Film Festival's Daily Insider of Day 3, Sunday January 18, 2009. Peter Rainer liked Art & Copy and was surprised to learn that it was originally intended as a promotional work of ad agencies. Kirk Honeycutt remarked to Peter Rainer and me how the films are so "lab-worked over". Does the professional finish of a lab make up, improve on or only mask the faults of a filmmaker's first work? Is it like a butterfly being helped to fly (and thereby not developing its own wings) or does it make the beginning filmmaker better? Mary Jane Skalski is here with two films, Dare and Against the Current. Steven J. Wolfe, who has worked on 35 films and has produced five with Jennifer Tilley, who is now playing professional poker, had his film 500 Days of Summer already placed with Fox Searchlight for U.S. and the world, so he was able to enjoy Sundance after 10 years absence from it. Senator picked up North American rights to Brooklyn's Finest. Gossip Girl's Michelle Trachtenberg is slippin' on a winter coat and heading to the snowy Sundance Film Festival for her new movie, Against the Current. But you can get a sneak peek here first. I've got the only picture from the flick—costarring Joseph Fiennes—which will have its world premiere next month at the Utah film fest. The indie dramedy, written and directed by Peter Callahan, also stars Justin Kirk of television's Weeds, Twilight's Elizabeth Reaser and Mary Tyler Moore.
