Eric Clapton read a book of poetry by the Persian poet Nizami, which included the story of Layla and Majnun. He based the song Layla on this story and imagined it as representing his passion for George Harrison's wife Pattie. Nearly nine years after the release of the album Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, Eric and Pattie were married.
