PR stunt
jasonobrien273 January 2020
This "documentary" feels like it's a PR stunt. Trying to fix the historical tweets which appears to have affected his personal and business profile. Doing the doc seems like it's trying to iron out the crease so he can get back onto the billionaire journey. I will continue to be a fan of his artistry but I feel like I lost respect for the man. One thing I will say about his tweets, comedians will say things that are funny to many and hurtful to some. That's comedy. One joke can't suit everyone. I laugh at a lot of his jokes but not all of them. I wish him well and I'm thankful he's fully recovered after his car accident. Hollywood needs this kind of comedian, just not the documentary maker.

Decent

The world is so PC now it's a joke. Everyone having a huff and puff about a joke that is 10 years old. Gay jokes were funny in the 80s and 90s. He apologised and people still wanted more. Show is good and gives a insight to his life and how hard he works

Interesting, but....
lilsportsfan9331 December 2019
In the end, it's six episodes of Kevin Hart defending himself and others explaining how hard he works, how successful he is, etc. It came off as more of a PR puff piece than a documentary examining the comedian's missteps.

Ego trip
e_ca_o_je29 December 2019
It's a total egotistical trip, but it works in a way that it does not hide anything. Kevin is transparent in everything so it shows here. It's not a documentary disguising anything anything other than the guy who's name is in the title.

WHY ARE YOU SO MAD?
darriastaylor31 December 2019
First off, I NEVER WRITE REVIEWS. This is literally my first one.

If you are not a fan of Kevin for whatever reason, why sit through an entire series of his just to review it on the internet. If im not a fan of someone's I just don't support them. People spend so much time trying to bring someone down and for what?

The man made a couple of bad jokes. But they are jokes people. Comedians joke about far worse things like rape and murder. That is their job to find something funny in the bad parts of life. This time the bad part was that as black men, we are raised to be homophobic. It's just the truth. If a boy growing up that was doing something suspect of being gay, they're friends or family would tell them, "stop that that's gay." It's just what happened. Kevin's jokes could have been executed better but like Dave Chapelle said, comedians need that space to sometimes not get it right.

This docuseries might be the best project I've seen from him. I looked up the editor to see what else they have worked on (something I've never done) it was so good. Thoroughly entertaining, funny, and inspiring.

Of course he has an ego. You don't become the biggest comedian the world has ever seen without one. Trying to turn ambition into something negative is immature. Of course the docuseries is self-promoting. Any project is an attempt to promote yourself. Any standup special is self-promoting. But the fact that he left in all of his mishaps makes you respect him.

The purpose was not to continue to apologize, but to be transparent while entertaining. Mission accomplished.

Loved it.

Even if you're not a Kevin Hart fan, this is an interesting view into a fascinating life. You won't regret watching it. And don't pay attention to the 1 ratings. They are just from people who can't forgive tweets from a decade ago.

A study in egomania
Dubdub197428 December 2019
If you are a maybe a psych major you might enjoy this as a case study, otherwise just skip it.

Kevin Hart spends 3 hours explaining that he isn't perfect and that's why he: cheats on his pregnant wife, constantly insults his family, friends and employees (but "hey , I love you!"...typical narcissism move), starts physical fights with his friends/employees, has an entourage of yes-men friends on his payroll, is totally tone deaf when it comes to other peoples' feelings, is obsessed with becoming a MOGUL, a BILLIONAIRE, wants people to talk about him FOREVER, has total delusions of grandeur, likes to talk about how he does "all of this for the family", is ALL ABOUT THE HUSTLE, doesn't have ANY resentment about his absentee father that he also now has on his payroll but he would appreciate if, you know, said father could ask for the 7000$ he needs for a new COPD breathing machine "like a man" and not be a "b**ch"!!! (you will hear that word, A LOT)

The scary thing is that Kevin Hart approved this documentary. He produced this, he thinks this makes him look good. This is how out of touch he is with what he really is: the messed up product of a dysfunctional family who has not dealt with any of his issues instead developing this raging ego to compensate. He has zero self awareness but is convinced that he knows it all, has surrounded himself in his private and professional life with yes men and women who are way too enamored with the paychecks and the lifestyle to help him grow and has developed the giant distorted crazy ego to be used as an armor to not have to deal with his issues.

As a result he comes off as an egotistical, narcissistic egomaniac and talks a lot about himself in the 3rd person. At one point I wondered if this was a mockumentary or a performance piece. Unfortunately it's not, this is Kevin Hart as he wants to be seen. It's really sad. Whether you find him funny or not, this will not make you laugh... Skip this one.

Real, personal and a open book
jacques-7728730 December 2019
Not many people can own up to their imperfections and mistakes Kevin does this to his massive following and in the process takes us all on a journey of his self discovery, I see ratings and reviews on here that's just ridiculous and obviously those people completely missed the message of this excellent personal look into Kevin's life, love, mistakes, views and growth. Brilliant!

An attempt at a PR salvage
enf-pedro-neto30 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As far as a documentary goes, this isn't one. Its not objective (its produced by its own subject...), as a documentary should be. You can't document yourself...then its a biography, a vlog or something other...but not a documentary.

Having watched it all, it seems like an attempt to fix the PR fiascos that plague Kevin Hart's image in the public eye but, in reality, it kind of backfires.

In the end, you're left with the impression that he is an arrogant self absorbed kind-of alpha male surrounded by paid "yes friends", absent from his kids lives and oblivious to the impact of his actions. And I'm sure a) that wasn't the intention and b) he can't be as bad as it seems...

Take the LGBTQ issue. If you come into it thinking he is gonna apologize, he doesn't. During the whole thing he never really addresses the issue directly to the camera. You're left with this effort to establish him as a victim of internet trolls, an ultra sensitive society and tons of other things... I mean he even brings the whole "I have gay friends" argument as if it somehow deflates the whole issue. But addressing it directly? Clearly? Apologizing? Admitting he was wrong? Or explaining in any logical way why he said what he did at the time and why he responded as he did? Nope.

Then you have the aggression towards his "friend" on the plane, you have his Las Vegas affair (in which he excuses himself with "I didn't have my friends there to keep me in check"...), him pitching a movie idea to Chadwick Boseman in the most weird and disconnected way....

I mean, it just doesn't work. It doesn't document his life or himself, it doesn't manage to fix his PR mishaps and you end up at the end with a worse image of him than you had before watching it.

Good vibes and entertaining
zishan-797-2952451 January 2020
This was a very entertaining take on the inside life of an upcoming superstar. I like how it showed his vulnerabilities more than his strengths. The doc was actually about how all the hardwork and ethics can vanish with a single tweet from a person at that position. Also after reading some of the nasty reviews here, I have to say that forgiveness is a rare quality these days. It was an entertaining documentary, Kevin is a very positive personality that we could all use at this crazy time.

Emotional Evolution into great growth and insight.
firewifeyash0329 December 2019
This was a powerful documentary. Following some of his major career ups and downs, and huge personal and highly emotional struggled life path. I was struck how we all as people in whatever capacity are so much the same. Filled with highs and lows, and if given the opportunity to receive and accept, some very life changing results. Thank you Kevin and his entire crew and family. My mistakes don't feel as invisible; because we all are riddled flaws of yesterday. I love how he influences others to embrace their flaws, and move through them, not hide or dismiss them. Yet learn and grow past, really resonates into a universal yearning. Message well received. Loved this!

Still scratching my head?
patconnaughty29 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Still scratching my head why Kevin puts up with this BS. I was shocked when his gay staff member started talking about her drama because of a statement he made 10 years ago. Her gay brother called her, her gay therapist called her, her gay wedding planner called her? What?? She probably needs a new therapist. She made gay people look weak and thin skinned. It was a bad joke 10 years ago. If everyone got mad at everything said about them or their "group" we wouldn't be able to get out of bed in the morning.

Kevin Hart promo
spersson1206228 December 2019
This is one long promo video of Kevin Hart promoting Kevin Hart. To call this a documentary is really pushing it. It's written, created and produced by Hart himself and to be honest, he does not come out like a nice person at all but it's obvious that he think he does and often the "documentary"really speaks down to it's audience. I used to be pretty neutral about Hart. I've seen some funny stuff in his stand up but he is in my opinion no Rock, Pryor, Murphy or Chappelle but this "documentary"really pushes to place him in that category or above. If you love Hart and would love to see Hart as he wants to be portrayed this is for you. If you like quality filmmaking and nuanced and objective journalism this is not. The 3 stars are for the cameo appearances.

You may not like him but...
jbt_28118129 December 2019
I thought the documentary was authentic. There were times in it where he said things that annoyed me. There were times I felt he was heartfelt. There were times I thought he was genuine. There were times I thought he was intentionally being ambiguous. At one point, my wife and I reacted to something he said he did and we both said "that's petty." The very next thing out of his mouth was him calling himself petty.

At the end, I can't say I loved Kevin Hart as much as I did at the beginning of watching. He was willing to step out and taint his reputation. In a weird way, I thought that made me gain respect for him.

His relationship with his father, is perfectly authentic. I had the same relationship with my dad. The exact same. I recognized every facial expression they shared with one another. Based on that, I feel like the audience got a no version of Kevin Hart.

In conclusion, yes, he is stubborn. He is ambitious. He has a way of both apologizing and not apologizing. Accepting and deflecting blame. Doing stupid things and then calling himself out on it. Rinse and repeat.

I no longer love Kevin Hart. He is not perfect. But this documentary almost was.

Why Are The Little Guys The Most Dislikeable...?
lewilewis199727 December 2019
I liked Kev', until I saw this. An ego a million times bigger than he is, constantly having to assert that he's 'the hardest working, more than ANYONE else' blah, blah, blah. At first we see him up, bright and early, with his personal trainer. That's for our benefit, to show how driven he is. It doesn't last, the next time his personal trainer has to wait two hours, which is 'normal' apparently. Mate, you are never going to be Oscar nominated, just look at the garbage you've put your name too so far, cheap throwaway comedy like Ride Along and B list animation voice overs, get over yourself. I did two episodes and that was enough. Such a self absorbed, full of bull and fakery when dealing with others, constantly blowing his own trumpet, always putting others down and then forcing them to say they love him?! So disingenuous and delusional to the point where he asks his own questions and doesn't allow the doc makers to ask anything he doesn't like? There's a reason why you only drive black sports cars, Kev, the urban myth seems to be 100% accurate in this case. Grow up, get a pair and get humble.

Interesting, funny, worth watching
We have been Kevin Hart fans, because he's hella funny, and this does not disappoint. Learned a lot about his background, what's shaped his life and who his support team is. What others consider grandiose bravado is actually a survival mechanism for Kevin and it keeps him working at his craft and business which is very successful. Night school was great, the critics need a life. Keep doing you K-Hart, unapologetically you!

Kevin Hart is dope
ablossomrose29 December 2019
From day one you have been extremely humorous. Somethings you say i dont take them literally (even if it hits home) if its funny and i laughed its a joke. I loved night school and the fact you have another humorous comedian Tiffany (love this girl) in it. Your right your option should matter. I know i have said the same about my son whom grows up with two sisters. Everyone has their option to their family period. Keep doing what you do Kevin i enjoy watching everything you do. So please dont stop on the mouths of haters.

So bad, egomania at full force.
lobitolespaul30 December 2019
So boring and scary, love Kevin heart but his "human" normal side he is showing right here is pretty ugly. Egocentric, disrespectful, and more...its an entire show of him promoting himself, trying to convince the audience he is the best man in the world.

I don't know if this was his idea or someone else's idea....if that was the case, kevin should fire him/her. This show was a pretty bad idea for his image.

If this was his idea, ...sorry Kevin you've got problems..is good you are taking this year off to rebuild yourself. Sometimes bad things happen to give you an opportunity.

I really wanted to enjoy the show, but if you are not a . "dumb" person, you can read between the lines.

I really don't like to crap on artists work, but this was too much. Thanks for reading.

It's ok not to be perfect!
ceriwilliams5928 December 2019
Loved this! Seeing the great Kevin Hart being so open and honest telling us of his struggles to get it right and showing us his only motivation is his family. The support he has from his family and friends is amazing there is a man who truly understands how lucky he is. Perfection does not exists so stop judging people on it. Brilliant.

This egomaniacal man-child is truly better than YOU!
Gromstaur30 December 2019
I've seen most of Kevin Hart's stuff (the movies and stand up comedy), and he's just barely a "5 out of 10" for me. He's got some funny stuff, some good jokes, and stories, but the man-child himself is incredibly strung out and annoying. Mind you, this was my opinion before I watched his brand new self-mockumentary. I'm right and truly blown away by this stupidity.

Two episodes in, I still had no idea what I was watching. Episode one starts off as if he's done some wrong and intends to apologize for it later on, but it just keeps dragging on, and by the end of episode two, I honestly didn't understand what it was all about. After reading through the comments here, I've gathered that he's in trouble for his homophobic rant from back when, and he's also cheated on his pregnant wife, and he's not really apologizing after all? I don't even care to find out.

As others have pointed out, it's a completely pointless self promotion under the guise of a documentary series. Having watched only two episodes, I'm already fed up listening to Kevin blowing his own horn about how hard he works. The man is so desperate for acceptance and approval, for attention and adulation, it makes me want to hide my face behind a pillow out of second hand embarrassment! This is shameless crap on a whole new level.

I'm sure the die hard fans love getting this inside, behind the scenes look at his life, but these are the same people who'd buy Kevin's canned farts. This misbegotten attempt at a documentary should be used for educational purposes to teach children about the dangers of "little man syndrome," or the Napoleon Complex, as it's commonly known.

First time writing a review while using imdb religiously for two decades.
rylis2 January 2020
First time writing a review while using imdb religiously for two decades. I am not a Kevin Hart fan. I've never watched his shows... fragments showed a lot of shouting and that's not my style of stand-up comedy (I'm more of a Louis C.K., Aziz Ansari, Dave Chapelle -flavor girl). But I'd seen him on talkshows and he really seemed like a down to earth guy. So I pressed play when Netflix suggested his documentary series. If you start watching and think you're watching some kind of refined reality show, the series will prove you wrong. Not only is this directed and edited beautifully and incredibly powerful... the underlying message exceeds the persona of Kevin Hart. This is a story about resurrection, redemption, creativity, leadership and mindset... a story which is nothing less than inspiring.
