The real deal is more entertaining
KittieC9 March 2022
To get us excited about a story we already know, a production has to bring something really unique to the table - a new dimension, a brilliant characterisation, an evocative rendering.

The problem with Joe vs Carole is that the version already told had all those elements dialled up to 12 already and there was nowhere new, or at least different enough to transport us, for a dramatisation to go.

The clunky CGI (mind you, props to them for avoiding any real animal use), the slightly surreal use of Queensland, Australia as a Florida substitute, and the fact that every main character is already basically a live-action cartoon, push the whole production into 1990s family adventure territory. If Brendan Fraser had jumped out of a tree I wouldn't have been surprised. But none of this imparts a charming quality; more one of cheapness.

John Cameron Mitchell and Kate McKinnon are fiercely into their characters, but a good impersonation doesn't necessarily make for compelling viewing. Some of the peripheral characters hold up well, particularly Nat Wolf and Sam Keely as two thirds of the tragic throuple, and Brian Van Holt as Joe Exotic's loyal ballast. Kyle McLachlan is consistent as Carole's long-suffering husband.

At the end of it all though, this is a story where truth IS stranger than fiction, and the dramatisation is left with nowhere to go and, frankly, not enough appetite to satisfy given what was served up in Tiger King.

Disappointingly for me, it was, like the documentary, a missed opportunity to promote the unnecessary horror of exotic animals being bred and kept for pedestrian purposes. Yet again, the selfish narcissism of humans overshadows a nasty, cruel industry that could so easily be ended if we chose to put the needs of these animals first for once.

I enjoyed it
tankboy-468513 March 2022
So I wasn't sure how they would add anything new to the circus that was Tiger King. Or better yet, flesh out the characters (based on real people) into a full fledged "working show".

But it kinda works well for a scripted comedy/drama, and better yet, it's pretty entertaining too.

Kate as Carole is really funny (but she's always funny anyway) and brings a good amount of seriousness and truth to the dramatized version of Carole Baskin. I enjoy that she doesn't play her as an overblown skit or cartoon parody.

The real shocker to me was John Cameron Mitchell as Joe. I mean wow... I would have never have predicted his casting... but damn does he shine. I grew up with Hedwig, and his other directorial outings too.

The mannerisms used and especially the vocal work Mitchell does for this part... I mean he actually becomes Joe Exotic.

I laughed, binged, and saw some surprisingly tender scenes. Would definitely recommend the show.

Baskin in the glory.
southdavid16 March 2022
I know that it's adapted from the original podcast, and not from Netflix's all conquering "Tiger King" documentary, but it's still unfortunate that the documentary exists rendering this series, despite its good performances, largely unnecessary.

Carole Baskin (Kate McKinnon) owner and operator of Big Cat Rescue is campaigning against the ownership of Big cats by private owners. She targets the operations of Joe Exotic (John Cameron Mitchell) a hot tempered and charismatic zoo operator. As the feud extends to personal insults, accusations and lawsuits, Joe eventually decides on a desperate plan to rid himself of Carole once and for all.

As a person that has seen the documentary, what I can immediately say is that everyone is doing a decent impression of the real-world nutcase that they are playing. Both Carole and Joe are both such big characters impressions of them are, I'd imagine, relatively easy for skilled performers like McKinnon and Cameron Mitchell. My favourite performance then was Kyle MacLachlan, who plays Carole's husband, Howard and who receives a more prominent role than Howard has in the documentary.

The trouble is the obvious one though, I know this story as I watched it not that long ago. So, I knew when the horrible moments were coming, and conversely, what wasn't going to happen, as the show ran on. There was no genuine drama, because I know where everyone is right now. Though I do think that the "Tiger King" series has flaws, mostly to do with keeping a decent handle on the timeline, it's much more thorough than this, and, if anything the real Joe is even more extreme than his portrayal here. The CGI work on the animals, whilst an understandable choice, isn't very good.

I watched it all, it was entertaining enough - but there is a better version of this story readily available.

Gets a 6 because I kept on watching
mbarnhar-167964 March 2022
Kept watching and binged the season to see what "dramatic effect" whey would add. Did like the back stories on Joe and Carole but the Netflix documentary is unmatched to this. Yeah, it might have been peak Covid and puzzle season, but the real thing documentary trumps this show big time.

More about the characters at war with themselves...
DukeEman5 March 2022
What first appears to be a cheap TV series based on actual events depicting a feud between a big cat lover and a backyard animal entertainer abuser, ends up being a fascinating insane journey into the lives of the two protagonists. Yes! I see both Joe and Carole as duel protagonists since they do believe deep in their hearts that what they are doing is righteous!

What gives these character an extra bounce is the insane and outrageous performances by Mitchell and McKinnon. I at first was not convinced, but as you journey deeper into this series, their characters develop to the point where you begin to understand all their quirky motives and actions.

What did throw me askew was the Australianess feel and look about it, with a supporting Aussie cast attempting American accents. The locations almost had that Florida feel (it was shot in the state of Queensland that is somewhat akin to the state of Florida). Once I got over that hurdle, I was able to ride on the backs of Joe and Carole with a zest of cringing enjoyment.

Why is Carole the Saint ?
GoldenGooner0414 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why are they making out Carole to be such a good person, are they going to mention about her 1st husband?

Did Carole sponsor this show? And why have a re-make a year after the Netflix Doc, do they think this will make a ton of money ?

Right have watched the whole series, still not sure why they made it, But she is NO saint as this program is making her out to be. The questions about her ex husband have still to be answered.

This program makes out she had a horrible life, and the way Joe shot the Tigers how could anyone like him?

I watched the Netflix shows, did he shoot the tigers? I can't remember One question for me is how come Joe's mother had so much money to give him? She did not live in a mansion Getting a comedy actress to play Carole, reinforced she was a nice person, as that was how the part was played, as the victim.

Did Carole produce this show...
sirdubs30 March 2022
The show portrays Carole as a "good person" that's doing right by big cats. When in real life she keeps big cats in small cages just like the rest of them. It's weird that this show decided to essentially champion her like this. Makes the show unwatchable after a while. Maybe if you didn't know who she was it would be OK, but this white washing of her history is just ridiculous.

Not as bad as I was thinking
annabmiller-895425 March 2022
Just want to say, this is actually somewhat pleasant. While never excusing their behavior, it does show more of the back story and humanizing of Joe and Carole. Showing we all face the same hardships but have the choice to hire a hit man or just take the high road. Good acting. Really good all around. Not sure why it's getting such poor ratings.

John Cameron Mitchell IS Joe Exotic!
LaneKnox5 March 2022
Overall the series mostly just recapped the reality TV show/was visual pablum ... and didn't really add much to the overall Joe Exotic drama ... but I have to say it! John Cameron Mitchell really stands out in the title role! I couldn't see Kate McKinnon as Carole. I just saw Kate playing Carole. But JCM literally BECAME Joe. We had to keep reminding ourselves that he wasn't Joe ... so kudos to him for the role! He smoked it!

Did Carole secretly produce this or something?
graypariah6 March 2022
This was advertised as telling the other half of the story, but there is almost no new information. What there is is omission of most of the compelling information surrounding the disappearance of Don Lewis and how Carol was as big into the big cat exploitation as anyone. Where is the talk about her and Don and Wildlife on Easy street or the how to videos on taking cubs away from their mothers early to make them good pets? Where is the talk about the power of attorney that specifically mentions "disappearance" as one of the things that triggers it. No instead we get an almost certainly fictitious account of how she just was a savant when it came to real estate.

If you haven't seen the Netflix documentary, watch that instead. That documentary will just lay everything out and let you make your own determination over who the "good guy" is. Spoilers, there aren't any people who are right in this story despite how Joe vs Carole wants to portray it.

Actually, a very interesting take on the story.
mandagrammy17 March 2022
I actually found this series to be a very interesting take on what some would call a well-known story, and yet not all the facts are truly known by anyone other than the actual participants. I suspect that those that dislike how Carole is portrayed as a heroine in this story truly believe she is responsible for her second husband's disappearance. That would be unfair, considering there has been no definitive proof she is guilty of anything. And her efforts to save wild cats is well documented as well as admirable. As for Joe, even if he was set up to a certain extent, he was proven to be guilty of the crimes he was charged with, thus he is no hero. But, all this aside I found the acting to be the thing that kept me coming back for more. Every performance, especially with the leads, was spot on. Yes, I could clearly see that the animals were all CGI, but I had no problem suspending belief in this case. It was in the best interest of both humans and animals. I give this a thumbs up for the acting if nothing else.

Solid Cast
Draysan-Jennings4 March 2022
I think a lot of people will agree that Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell nailed Carole Baskin & Joe Exotic. They got the look and voices down to a T. As far as the show goes. Don't go into it expecting it to be as good as the docu-series. If you do, you're going to be disappointed. The documentary was pure gold, the show, not so much. Dont get me wrong, it's still a decent show. It just doesn't compare to the docu-series. 6 stars.

Good acting, terrible writing
danbull-2042719 June 2022
I can only assume the writer was a Carole supporter.

Tiger King was trash TV at its best at a time we all needed it during the pandemic. However both Joe and Carole are horrible people. So self absorbed that they care nothing about the people and animals around them, only that they are loved.

This show is a poor retelling of their story and seeks to only paint Carole as a courageous fighter for big cats, which she is not. Hence why she was unable to get a zoo accreditation when she applied for one. She seeks to only harm those who stand in her way by lying about them, no different to Joe.

Awful programme. Done watch unless you've watched everything else on tv.

dramatic replication of the netflix documentary series
phenomynouss8 March 2022
It seems pretty obvious that a fictional series based on the whole Joe Exotic/Carole Baskin saga would draw directly from the 2020 netflix "Tiger King" documentary series. But the main difference here is that this show is almost a dramatization of the documentary series itself, rather than the actual events.

The show goes about showing almost every event that was covered in the documentary. Almost every story that someone told, it's presented here in some form. Carole off-handedly mentions in the docuseries her throwing a potato at her first husband, here it is in the series depicting her throwing a potato at her first husband. Carole off-handedly mentions in the docuseries buying a big cat at an auction to save it from being killed and stuffed by a taxidermist, here it is in the series her in a bidding war with the taxidermist.

On the positive side, the show goes beyond just the documentary series in many cases, largely in the form of flashbacks of both Joe and Carole, depicting some events the documentary didn't cover, mostly character moments, and Joe's time with his first husband. But the way the film seems to dedicate itself to covering pretty much every event spot for spot that the documentary series does is in some ways fascinating, but probably off-putting for some viewers.

The casting and acting is phenomenal; beyond just having the people look like the people they are depicting, it's very clear that the actors involved put special effort into fully encompassing the people they are playing. Kyle MacLaughlin, playing Howard Baskin, perfectly captures the timbre of Howard's voice, as well as his accent and speaking style. John Cameron Mitchell and Kate McKinnon are almost indistinguishable from Joe and Carole in terms of speaking style.

If you went about watching episodes of this series then alternated with episodes of the documentary series, it's uncanny just how flawless the actors are in capturing everything they can about the people they play.

One of the biggest things that stands out in this series as well is a heavy usage of CG. Literally every animal seen on screen is CG, not just the "dangerous" animals like big cats and alligators, but even sheep are all CG. The CG is not very good, though CG effects are used on John Cameron Mitchell to de-age him for the Joe flashback scenes, and these look much better.

As a whole, this isn't really a necessary series in any real way. It helps for those who are more "visual" learners in terms of establishing the relationships and sequence of events depicted in the documentary series in a more linear fashion (as the documentary had occasional episodes that went off-topic to more deeply cover related subjects, like Don Lewis's disappearance, Doc Antle's zoo, and so on). It's more a fun diversion to see a group of actors perfectly capture the look and sound of the people they are depicting.

Lmao. For a remake they did amazing.
youtwobeen6 March 2022
Everyone is complaining or saying don't waste your time or don't watch there is nothing new???? This is a remake based on the Tiger King Series. Did you want them to just make up a new story line so there was something new? The whole point of a series being based on actual events is it's based on actual events. People are also slamming McKinnon saying because she's younger and thinner she did a horrible job. I actually can get past that due to her acting. All the way down to that walk and the cringey stares when she's talking to people. The only person I feel was way off was Howard he really didn't look like him at all but his personality was really close. But the real Howard has that unique way his mouth looks when he talks. But I mean they aren't the real people or twins or related so when people complain they should realize they are actors playing the roles.

I thought it was Hilarious 😂 The 2 main characters are so well cast and the supporting actors aren't too shabby either.

It is what it is, a bingable popcorn take on the documentary and it's highly entertaining.

PR for Carol
nycapples21 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I usually don't rate things but I had to say something about this. Kate And all the other actors did great, they nailed the characters, but how much did Carol and Howard pay Peacock to make this? It was so sympathetic to her and how misunderstood she is, they even tried to play the domestic violence survivor card! I'm not on her or Joe's side, because they are all crazy! But this was just too much. That lady has some pretty big skeletons in her closet and has shady business practices but none of that is mentioned. Her missing husband was glossed over. They just had a really big bias and it shows. Could have been much better if they would've painted them both in the crazy light they deserve!

It was fun
maxinegould17 March 2022
Yes this is a strange series to make so soon after documentary but if you just watch it as a bit of fun then you'll enjoy it. Yes CGI wasn't the best but hey just have a giggle and move past it. Just have fun with it and watch the documentary if want a more serious side. As for actors I think both were great both had obviously studied them. I don't understand those saying that John Cameron Mitchell wasn't up to par. When first saw snippet of trailer I thought it was him. He had everything about Joe right voice, walk, mannerisms everything. Carols actress also had all of her mannerisms and walk etc.

People will love it, hate it or don't really care either way but at the end of the day it really is just fun and I for one enjoyed it regardless of what was and wasn't in it.

Entertaining series
kpet-6137115 March 2022
I'm a massive fan of the original Tiger King Series. I was worried this series would be corny but I was surprised how quickly became immersed in this new Tiger King world. Its quirky but nuanced. The acting was really great. Especially the Joe Exotic character. It has a uniquely American aesthetic. The editing is on point. I really enjoyed it.

Why?
admin-32264-6797621 March 2022
I hoped this series would continue where Tiger King left off, to update us on the saga that is Joe and Carole and the subsequent legal issues, etc. But it is merely a retelling of the story, this time without the real people, or the real tigers, which were the essence of the original. Why bother?

Instead of portraying a real Carole Baskin, who might be capable of turning her husband into tiger kibble, this version is for Baskin apologists. She is too cheap to pay her employees, but we are expected to nod in sympathetic agreement at her ridiculous excuse that it's to prevent "mercenaries" from infiltrating her organization (face palm). I would rather go back and re-watch the original.

WTF?
bierbreth7 March 2022
Who decided to make a completely unnecessary film in (apparent) favor of the Baskin woman? Does this person actually KNOW anything about this subject? This movie casts favorable light on a corrupt, hypocritical pathological liar, and does it for the mere purpose of exploiting an idiot who was falsely imprisoned, and a possible murderer who seems to have gotten away with it. Leave it to the dolts in Hollywood to take her side. Kate McKinnon is incredibly talented, but is yet another of the sheeple who believe all the misinformation and disinformation the media spoon feeds the rest of the lemmings. Don't bother with this tripe, unless you're a fan of regurgitated schlock that is all based on skewed information.

Watchable entertainment
christof410 March 2022
This is an easy to watch entertaining dramatisation of the events leading to Joe Exotic's current situation. The documentary on Netflix is only briefly mentioned. This series is actually based on a podcast about Joe and Carole.

Extremely good acting. Some great dialogue and funny one-liners.

Uncomfortable to watch in parts. Joe is certainly a predator who manipulates vulnerable people. I found his relationship with one of his husbands particularly upsetting to watch.

Carole is shown a lot of love in this series. While certainly a character some may dislike, I found her - while definitely annoying - also endearing, misunderstood, strong and fearless.

I would recommend this series for its entertainment value and the great acting and dialogue.

Fantastic Comedy. Especially if you've watched Tiger King
danlaj7 May 2022
It's like one big SNL skit, which if your normal and not obsessed with seeing caged Tigers, is exactly how it should be made. Kate McKinnon is fantastic as Carole Baskin, the way she slips in jokes about Carol and the entire ridiculousness of the show is perfect. Kind of a wink wink sort of deal, it's like one huge SNL skit. I found myself laughing at almost every scene she is in.

It is pretty well done, but doesn't add anything to the documentary series (except for a more sympathetic read on Carole).

So yeah... it is good but there is no reason for it to exist.
