I generally don't like war games, or even first-person shooters very much. But something about this title gripped me from the beginning. I think it must have been the way it made my heart pound as I worked through the campaign, sweating every time I threw an enemy grenade back and wondering if I had enough time on the fuse. Or being severely outnumbered with just myself and a wounded sniper, feeling doomed yet somehow making it through. This is one of the few games which takes me out of myself (the way a really great movie does) and throws me into the shoes of an SAS soldier or Marine, and has me wondering if I'll make it to the end.
I'm not a game reviewer, but these are some things that have earned Infinity Ward high marks in my book with this title: Graphics - As of today (December '07), these are the best visuals a game has to offer, and sometimes I find myself just walking around an area admiring the detail that went into it. The frame rate (at least on the 360) remains pretty consistent, and the fluidity of movement is silky smooth from start to finish.
Pacing - Not once was I bored during the campaign. It's fast paced, but not in an unrealistic way - you're on the edge of your seat because there's "hostiles" all around you, and you can't afford the luxury of being bored.
Difficulty - I'm glad to see that a higher difficulty here does NOT mean an enemy who takes more shots, but rather one with faster reflexes, sturdier aim, and more strategic grenade-lobbing.
Sound effects - I don't know how many people look for good sound effects in a game, but for me, they tend to be a major factor, and I appreciate the satisfyingly diverse sounds of each weapon, or the "ping" grenades make as they bounce towards you, and yes, even the "thup" of hitting your target.
Story - About the highest compliment I could give this game is that it plays like a superbly made war drama. It's one part story driven, and one part simulator. The overall story and character involvement make it feel like something much more epic than just a first-person shooter, though if all you happen to care about is shooting, the story doesn't get in the way of that, either. The campaign ends with a dramatic conclusion, and I frankly hope there are never talks of making this franchise into a movie, because Call of Duty 4 goes beyond the limits of what films are capable of.
(also, the music is commendable, simply because I generally don't think I'd want much of a soundtrack for realism's sake, but Stephen Barton's work here is beautifully sublime, and sets the mood well)

This game is well worth the price. Storyline and even the online multilayer are amazing. IW has very well succeeded in making a video game that displays real war. The ending is also worth fighting for. This is one of the rare few games that certainly are the best of the best.
When playing the musical score is excellent. It Certainly succeeds in highlighting scenes of sorrow, joy, honor, duty, and sacrifice. Also not to forget the heart pounding adrenaline when you repel out of a black hawk helicopter into a middle eastern town filling with 360 degree of danger.
A must get game!

As soon as I started this game on Christmas night, I knew I would love it. The graphics stun and make you think it's real. The guns reload as should and even shoot through walls and other flimsy material. The modern military tech is very impressive. The game will seriously make your heart pound. The game doesn't glorify war, it shows how messed up it can be with many things like, friends dying, see death through the eyes of others, rescue missions, and even an amazing assassination with a .50 caliber Barrett. From infiltrating a boat to sniping men while wearing Ghillie, you'll be amazed. The stealth missions are tense and full of suspense while firefights are full of action and violence. Infinity ward really took the gold with this game. The only down side is that the game is short. I beat it in one night but it did take all night so the game takes maybe 6 hours on normal but up the difficulty and you've got a couple days to play. Also, play the multi-player. It has a 1-50 rank, customizable weapons and it's full of action. I loved it. If you don't buy this game, you'll be missing a classic without a doubt.

What an incredible piece of game-making.
By far, the best graphics yet seen on any platform.
Action, action, action. No more wandering around, going, "er...where do I go now?" Nothing but action. The bad guys crawl out from anywhere, like six-foot roaches with machine guns.
A level of realism previously unachieved in any field of entertainment.
The graphics look silky and photo-realistic. I refer not solely to the facial features and the movement and stances of the characters, but also to the incredible backgrounds that da Vinci would have been proud of.
You get the feeling you're in a war - not a computer game. You feel attached to the game, and lose concentration in the real world, to such an extent that you'll lose track of time, and maybe even be late for work/school/auditions/AA meetings.
Without doubt, this game is the one that will change everything. Halo? HALO? Nothing compared to this. Honestly, buy this game. You have no reason to dislike anything about it, apart from maybe the price.
This game has raised the bar so high, that I'm certain some developers who were a couple of months away from releasing their own FPS will have to delay their games' releases to have a major overhaul to catch up.
Call of Duty 4 is streets ahead of anything else out there. Get it. Play it. Love it. Live it.
Lots of love, Thomas Hardcastle

Finally after much anticipation i finally got a copy of call of duty 4 and have now finished the game.
The main story is how a Russian ultranationalist party wants to bring Russia back to it's soviet days. The leader of the ultranationalists is Imran Zackaev and he uses a middle eastern terrorist, Kahled Al Asad to draw attention away from the russians.
Playable characters jump between several characters. You play S.A.S sergent Soap Mactavish, Sergent Paul Jackson of the U.S.M.C and also a very fun one off mission were you go flashback 15 years and play as captain price.
The graphics are incredibly detailed and every tiny detail is catered for.
The story was a fantastic idea considering how call of duty has jumped from world war 2 to the modern day.
Online is where the fun really lies. There are hundreds of different online games but my favourite is ground war which is basically your team deathmatch but with LOTS more players and it actually feels like a warzone with grenades, explosions and bullets happening all around you.
A very deep experience and certainly worth your money, definitely my game of the year.

Despite slight flaws, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the greatest games that came out this year. If you like First Person Shooters, you will love COD4. With realistic war zones and a good storyline, the controller will be hard to put down. Although Call of Duty 4 is fill with nonstop action and violence, it gives you a sense of what real war would be like, and you begin to appreciate real-life soldiers. GameInformer rated Captain Price one of the best heroes of the 2007 as a gaming year. Never are you so delighted to be ordered around by a guy with a mustache.
Graphics: 9/10: Great graphics, with slight flaws in grass and thin layered items.
Controls: 10/10: The scoping system is wonderful and I love how you can stab people in the back.
Realism: 10/10: The war zones and situations are so life-like in COD4 that you feel yourself simultaneously slashing with the controller as if it was a knife while pressing the mêlée weapon.
Difficulty: 9/10: I beat the game on the Recruit difficulty setting, and I had no problem (it was the easiest). So I tried to repeat one of the latter levels on Veteren (the hardest setting), and I was utterly annihilated.

was this great or what?! i mean i played the demo and it was "OK", but then i played the full game and it was like a whole other experience, man the graphics, movementes, and the feeling was on top. Great game! Great music! which creates a great mood. I can recommend this game to all of you gamers out there! It was like a surprise to me...i mean Call of duty 4, modern warfare does that really gonna work, i mean we got BF2 already, but it did work more than i could ever EVER!! imagine. This game is going to be a classic for 100 years, people are going to talk about it in decades...

I have played just about every Call of Duty game out there and this is by far the best one. First off the visuals are excellent the visuals are truly some of the best. The look of explosions and battle worn areas in the middle east is intense. It's great to just look around(when your not getting shot at) and realize the scope of how much work was put into the game to make it look so good.
The sound is great its like they went onto an actual battlefield and recorded everything.Explosions and gunshots sound just so great its probably as best there gonna get for the moment.Voice acting was great the actors did a stand up job sounding like the characters they were. It's always great when a voice actor does a great job and makes the character more believable.
Game play is the best Call of Duty game play ever.Nothing was wrong with it unlike Call of Duty 3 which seemed to have physics to have problems as often id get stuck on a tire.Coming off that note the physics and frame rate are excellent and hardly ever falter. The controls in this game were tight and easy to learn. This COD game perfected the throw back grenade function which was first introduced in COD3.The use of a knife as a melee attack was also entertaining and to me was more believable then beating a man to death with a rifle butt.Guns seemed to be as strong as they should be and fired like they should. For once a storyline was attempted that didn't all but just make you want to skip the cut scenes as it was interesting and could draw you in.The one thing i wished there was more of was guns. There are a lot of guns there but there all kind of obvious that they would be there for example there were just about 2 million times i could of used an AK-47 i know its one of the most mass produced guns in the world but add more variety come on. Also many times i found myself forced to use an m4 assault carbine and had few chances to use an m-16 which i believe is a better gun.I found it a little odd the British S.A.S. was using the m4 and not the standard British rifle the L85 which was a gun i was really hoping to see.(I only have this problem with the campaign.) Multiplayer leaves nothing to be desired. The multiplayer is excellent its easy to just jump in and play the game and actually be good at it.There is a good variety of weapons on multiplayer and some customization to be done to the weapons.Plenty of match types that people could want or need.
All around Call of Duty is the best war game i have ever played and I've played enough of them.I own it for the ps3 and have not experienced many problems with it.Best war game out there and best COD of the series.

This was my introduction to the series back in 2009 or so. I was blown away by both the campaign and multiplayer experience, and I continue to be all these years later.

I've only played the online mode at my friends house, and let me tell you, It is by far THE GREATEST WAR GAME AND FIRST PERSON SHOOTER EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES!!!! But even that can't describe it's greatness. This game is full of some much realism that I felt I was shell-shocked. It feels like you're in the 2001 film, Black Hawk Down. I recommend you buy this Immediately!!!! In fact, buy 2 copies. This game will bury the Halo Series since the Halo trilogy is pretty much dead.
Features
WEAPONS:M16A1, M4A1, AK-47, M249, M60E4, MP-5, P90, UZI 9mm, Barreta M9, HK USP, Desert Eagle, RPG-7, M40A1, M21, and many more.
Detructable environments, Airstrikes, and much much more. You'll be very satisfied with this game.

I've been playing video games for 20 years. And every time a shooter comes out I jump all over playing it. I guess the only thing that I can say is... none of them, not Halo 3 not Ghost Recon 2 and not Battlefield 2, hold a candle to this game. It has of the smoothest game-play. Massive types of games to play (online). And some of the best graphics to currently be found on any system. If you like shooters of any type, then it would be easy to say that you would love this game. I would say that this game would get my "Greatest Of All Time" award (if I actually gave one out). The online game-play allows for you to slowly move into different weapons. It also allows for you to slowly add power ups, but prevents you from stacking these power ups. Add this with the fact that you are able to create up to 5 different preset classes and you've got something different, one way or the other, than the other players on the board. Now don't get me wrong there are some setbacks. One thing is that it does not have the depth of customization as Rainbow Six Vegas. It also does not allow for split screen online play like Halo 3. But, and this is a strong but, all it will take for you is one time. One! And you will agree that this game is amazing.
Asking someone if war games suck, is like asking someone if the sky is blue, there is no reasoning to the fact that war games have ruined the world in various different ways. As awful as it may sound, it continues to worsen. During the revolutionary year of 2007, Infinity Ward brought humiliaton upon themselves with their most foul lauch to date,"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,".
This game was so terrible, that it was practically built from the ground up, only to satisfy pure douche bags, which is 95% of modern day teenages. After playing and learning new information about this failure series installment, it is proved fact that the graphical works in this game are completely made up of pixels and coding.
Seeing as that this game sucks, it still remains a huge financial success, due to the public and their petty opinions, that spark the falling of a great video game developer, all because they were fooled by the encouraged usage of the art of repetitive gaming into the continuing production and creation of these sh** worthy games that are destroying this world as we know it.
A quick way to summarize Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, is that it is a failure attempt to reunite the series that once popularized the war fighting genre. A much faster way to summarize this bullsh**, is that it's completely nauseating to watch, and I don't recommend playing this disaster.

I was never a fan of the previous games in the Call of Duty series but I must say that Infinity Ward has created a wonderful game.
The first 3 missions give you great idea of what is to come. Call of Duty 4 has a perfect mixture of stealth, sniping and all guns blazing warfare. This game is the first I've played where I truly feel as if I'm in a war zone. You either play as a British SAS agent or a US Marine and you have to contend with the enemy's bullets, grenades, exploding cars and tanks. In Call of Duty you have no control over your squad but you really feel immersed in the action as it unfolds.
The graphics and sound in the game are superb. The environments and soldiers both look realistic and the lighting casts shadows and sun glare beautifully. The soundtrack provides music which fits the mood of the game perfectly and you can hear explosions in the distance as well as the 'tinging' noise of ricocheting bullets.
Online play is fantastic. There is a great variety of modes ranging from your standard death-matches to some excellent objective-based team games. Rarely, do you encounter a poor game. The only problem with the online system is the poor lobby which doesn't give you the option to choose specific games to suit your needs. However, the game has a top-notch ranking systems which rewards you for good play by giving you extra weapons and perks as well as game modes.
The single player game is a little short but I have not come across one as good as Call of Duty 4. If your a fan of First-Person Shooters you will love this game. If not, you may still be converted to the genre because of the quality of this title.

I used to be a pretty big fan of the CoD series, and both Black Ops and Modern Warfare were big reasons.
To this day, no other game in the series has given me an experience quite like this, Modern Warfare is probably my second favorite game in the series, right behind Black Ops, the game is surprisingly solid in almost every area, the gameplay feels just right and the game can be pretty challenging at certain levels, but if you play smart, you can actually get on top of almost every situation, the score is great, I specially love the main theme, the story of the game is fairly standard but it works well for this kind of game, ironically this is probably the last CoD game we had that was in any way "realistic". The game also looks good all this years later and the campaign is filled with memorable set pieces, my favorite part of the game is a stealth section where you are basically playing as a sniper trying to hide from enemies, it was tense and by far the highlight of the game.
Overall I really recommend this game, is by far one of the strongest games in the franchise and is overall an excellent FPS

"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" stands as a splendid and unmissable classic in the gaming world. From its release to the present day, it continues to exemplify the pinnacle of first-person shooters. The single-player campaign is a masterclass in variety and creativity. Each mission, whether it be a high-octane frontal assault or a stealthy infiltration, is crafted with care, making the gameplay experience diverse and continually engaging. The game also boasts several moments that have since become iconic in the gaming community.
The gameplay mechanics are a key highlight. Even 15 years after its release, they remain fluid, intuitive, and satisfying, avoiding any sense of frustration. This timeless quality extends to the multiplayer aspect, which, impressively, is still active and relevant. The ability of "Modern Warfare" to sustain a dedicated player base over such a long period is a testament to its enduring appeal and well-balanced gameplay.
In the broader context of the gaming industry, "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" has had a significant impact. It not only influenced countless other games in its genre but also set a new standard for what a first-person shooter could be. Beyond its industry influence, the most crucial aspect of "Modern Warfare" is its enduring nature as a fantastic and enjoyable experience. The game has aged remarkably well, retaining its charm and excitement for both new players and veterans alike.
In conclusion, "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" is more than just a major game in the industry; it's a landmark of gaming excellence. Its blend of innovative campaign design, enjoyable gameplay, and a still-thriving multiplayer scene makes it a timeless classic and a must-play for any gaming enthusiast.

You'll spend at least 3 hours trying to beat one level in veteran, if you haven't played this game I highly recommend it. Does it have flaws yeah but the remaster does the campaign justice and improves the graphics but ruins the multiplayer by adding micro-transaction curse those damn things. Controls are top of the line, it looks like a battlefield in modern times with stealth ops and awesome Russian opponents. Although I will say the creators of Call of Duty are incredibly Russo-phobic but fudge it these games are awesome this is not the best of the trilogy MW2 was better it's still a blast and worth your time. Keep in mind this reinvented the genre forever than had it tarnished by the futuristic Call of Duties after Call of Duty Ghosts

This is Call of Duty. This is the crown jewel of first person shooting online multiplayer computer gaming, arguably anyway.
You feature amongst your squad and take on the Russian threat in missions which require you to get in, then get out.
I am a bit of a Battlefield fanboy but I am happy now I played this. Don't even think for a second that I am good at Call of Duty multiplayer because I'm not.
I played this game on veteran. It can be a challenge but regular checkpoints will help you progress through to the end.
I think you should just go ahead and buy this because it is a popular essential.
I played on the Xbox 360.

Platform: PS3
Setting: Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East etc.
Story: You're part of the military elite (S.A.S.) and fighting terrorists determined to get nuclear weapons.
Graphics: Good.
Sound: Good.
General observations:
Not being a lover of first person shooters, I thought I'd give this massively popular franchise a burl. It's the first in the series with a focus on contemporary warfare and can be had for a bargain nowadays. The controls are intuitive and the gameplay is generally accessible. To be honest, I started playing this game after I rage/bored quitting Metal Gear Solid 4, but dropped it when I conquered a hard part of MGS4. It was only after completing MGS4 multiple times that I got around to finishing this game. The story wasn't particularly engaging and seems pretty much geared towards funnelling you into online play...just teaching you the basics of the gameplay. That was fine by me. I didn't try out the online component and aren't sure if it's still available. Also, I played this game on "Rookie" level...but I completed the "Mile high" mission on the Normal difficulty, so I'm sure I could play on the harder difficulty levels (I played on the hardest difficulty level of MGS4 eventually).
The Health system of the game is like that found in the Uncharted games...if you get shot, you take cover for a while to recover full health. You can run, crouch run and crawl in the game. There are multiple weapons to use, including high tech ones.
Good about the game:
The training module at the start is brief and gives you a feel for the gameplay.
The controls are intuitive...even after I returned to the game after finishing MGS4, it was easy to pick up on the gameplay.
The game doesn't waste your time...you can skip the self-promotion slides at the start of the game and in game, if you die, you pretty much resume from where you died...so, generally you don't have to repeat slabs of levels, which I like.
I like how your squad waits for you...there are things to collect in the game (which I didn't really care about) and you can roam at your leisure to find them, then meet up with your squad and continue the action.
Variety of gameplay...sniper missions, helicopter gunships, missile launches etc.
The final moments of the game were cinematic and effective (before the "mile high" mission).
Your squad commander looks like Lemmy Kilmister! You can replay levels/Acts after you complete them. So, if you enjoyed some of the unconvetional parts of the game, like shooting big guns from a helicopter using thermal vision, you can replay that again.
Bad about the game:
Very occasionally you can get lost in the game, not sure what to do next...e.g. in an early sniping mission your commander tells you to come "over here" to snipe...where is "here"? Just no cues to help you there. Only once did I have to go online to find out how to progress the game...for the detonation by the tavern section. I really had no idea what was expected of me and what to do. To not waste a bucket load of time, I just searched online as to how progress the game at this point. This lack of clarity on what you are meant to do can be tedious. The game could explain things to you better in this regard. A similar thing happened with the missile code section of the game, but I managed to locate the right place to do what you were meant to do...it's only clear where you're meant to be if you know where to look! This section was timed, so it could be frustrating if you timed out.
The enemy animations are a mixed bag...I like how you could hurt them yet they still posed a believable threat to you when injured. Not so good was how at other times they miraculously recovered from being shot at and carried on as normal...the equivalent to your ability to recover full health when injured.
Maybe once you had to repeat game play from before you died, which wasn't ideal...I preferred respawning from where I died. I had actually saved from a certain point, but when I couldn't complete my objective the game sent me back to before the point I saved.
For the end game play, on the truck ride, I found it hard knowing what to do...i.e. who the enemy was and being able to target them effectively.
Conclusion:
Once you complete the game you unlock Arcade mode and Hints as well. Didn't replay the game as I want to play Uncharted 3 now. But I did briefly play the "mile high" mission in Arcade mode. That looks like a quick and easy option if you want a short FPS fix if you don't have much time.
The single player campaign is a good introduction to this genre and you can easily learn the ropes here until you feel ready to tackle what this game was no doubt intended for...online play...where you can expect to be pwned and teabagged by 11 year old boys! Recommendations: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. This game is all about the story. It is in 3rd person view but you can play it like a FPS I'm sure...maybe for most of the game? Bioshock: I don't consider myself a FPS aficionado but this game really grabbed me...I'd call it FPS for people who aren't into FPS! Has sort of magical abilities as part of your weaponry.
I'm considering maybe giving the Black Ops sequel a burl, once it price comes down...it seems a futuristic kind of game, which might make it interesting for me.
Setting: Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East etc.
Story: You're part of the military elite (S.A.S.) and fighting terrorists determined to get nuclear weapons.
Graphics: Good.
Sound: Good.

I wasn't really a big fan of Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare, and to be honest I don't know why. Mabye because it was a new setting because the Call of Duty's before this one were all set during World War 2. Aldo the graphics were good and the Multiplayer was fun.
