Jay and Margaret - what a great love story.
studioAT1 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Underneath all the humour there's a lot of pathos in this episode - in the Gloria/Manny story, and also in the Jay/Margaret one too. It sneaks up on you, it's subtly done, but it's lovely.

What does Alex do for a job? Does anyone know? Does anyone really care? Thankfully at least the character is being used better.

The Phil/Claire story, with the added return of Josh Gad, was ok, a bit silly, but again it's just lovely to see these actors play off of each other.

Useless episode, it felt like it was created just to fill the air time.

Oh my, you can clearly see...people in their "later" stage...

This episode is okay. The part with Cam and Mitch and Murray is hilarious. Kenneth is not my jam. But can we talk about how this episode and the last episode show people in their "later" stage. I don't know how to say it but it's just something weird with how they look. Marsha Kramer (Margaret) died on Jan. 13 2021 and this episode aired Jan. 22... Fred Willard (Frank Dunphy) died in May. You can sense their "tiredness". RIP to both.

Hilarious

This episode really showed character development for Gloria. I loved Mitch and Cams storyline. I really hope Claire gets a great job. I feel closure for Javier and Margaret.

Great episode. So funny.

Awful

Warning: Spoilers
My main issue with this episode is that the Cam and Mitch subplot is lifted directly from a main plot of a season 9 episode of King of the Hill, where a woman comes to see her old house that the Jill's now live in, only to tell them she wants to die in it. This isn't the first time Modern Family has stolen from KOTH either. The entire running gag of Jay being obsessed with his dog is the same running gag that King of the Hill has been doing with Hank and Ladybird since the beginning. Mitch and Cam storylines are insufferable. All they do is bicker and whine about each other, lie to each other, and do things behind each other's back, and are astoundingly negligent parents to Lily. If the writers want me to hate them, they've done a great job.

Besides that, the weak attempt at character development for Gloria and Manny is pathetic. This is character development that should have happened in season 3-4. Manny has been turned into a caricature of himself, like most of the characters. It should not take 10 seasons of television for a character to develop. The writers have a serious problem with not being able to let these characters grow and change. At the end of every episode the characters usually learn a lesson about themselves, and yet by the next one, they've reverted back to who they were, as if they learned nothing.

All in all, the show is clearly phoning in this last season. Half the jokes are so lazy or not in character that you'd think it was written by someone who never saw the show.
