- In the ziggurat inner chamber, Vox Machina try desperately to save Keyleth, who is mortally wounded and fading fast. A defeated Delilah Briarwood sadly muses that it was too soon, and the ritual has failed. Percy tells them that Keyleth is lost, but is satisfied they have Delilah. His words come as a shock to the rest of the party. Vex takes a healing elixir from the bag of holding and gives it to Keyleth, but it has no effect. Scanlan suspects something is wrong, and tries summoning his magical hand. The spell fizzles out, and he concludes that whatever the spinning orb left by the ritual is, it is blocking all magic in its vicinity. They retreat away from the orb, dragging Delilah with them, while Grog takes Sylas' black sword as loot. He helps Vax carry Keyleth as far away as the refinery room, and Scanlan senses his magic return. Vax asks for another elixir, but they already used their last one. Keyleth is on death's door, and without Pike, they have no way to heal her. The party, especially Vax, despair for their friend. Vax spots Keyleth's component pouch, and tries to remember what she used to heal Cassandra. He makes the mixture and has Scanlan infuse it with magic, and holds it to Keyleth's wound in the hope it will be enough.
Meanwhile, Percy and Cassandra confront Delilah about the ritual. Delilah tells Percy to kill her, but Percy tells her she will be given the longest, most painful death possible, and laughs maniacally as the evil smoke becomes thicker and stronger than ever. Scanlan tries to calm Percy, but the smoke lashes out at him. The healing spell takes hold, and Keyleth awakens enough to tell them that Percy has been possessed by a demon. If it gets what it wants, there will be nothing left of Percy. Vex stands in front of Delilah and takes off Percy's mask. His face is contorted with conflicting emotions, and he tells her the demon will not let him lower the gun. To avoid firing on Vex, Percy points the gun at himself. The demon manifests itself as a cloud of fire and smoke, and takes full control of Percy. He attacks Vex, and Keyleth tells them hurting Percy will not stop the demon. Percy himself must take back control. To buy time, they do everything they can to protect Delilah. The demon shows Percy visions of his past and his enemies, and uses them to make him attack his friends. Before he can kill Scanlan, Percy confronts the creature, demanding to know who it is. The demon, Orthax, tells him he knows it, and reminds Percy of the hatred and rage that he felt after his family's slaughter. His absolute desire for vengeance summoned him, and he gave Percy the knowledge for the tool he needed to get what he wanted. In forging the gun, he made a pact with Orthax. Percy gets revenge with the gun, and in exchange Orthax feasts on the souls of all of its victims.
Percy tries desperately to fight Orthax, and Vex tells Cassandra she must try and reach him. She tells him she knows the pull of revenge, but he must stop before he hurts his loved ones. The rest of Vox Machina also step forward, but their names are added to the barrels of the gun. He blasts them back and goes for Lady Briarwood. Vex begs him not to forfeit his own soul by completing his dark mission. Before he can kill Delilah, Percy shoots his own hand, breaking the pact and exorcising Orthax. He is finally himself again. Delilah laughs at the party, saying the de Rolos are weak. Percy tells her the suffering of losing her love is enough punishment. Lady Briarwood declares that despite their efforts, the Whispered One will return, crumbling cities and raising titans in his wake. Before she can attack them, Cassandra runs her through and kills her. They dissolve her body in the acid, and Percy goes to pick up the Pepperbox, though Scanlan gets to it first. Percy claims that despite its origin, without the demon it is now safe to use. Scanlan disagrees, and tosses it in the acid as well. As the gun dissolves, the last fragment of Orthax is destroyed once and for all. Percy thanks his friends for all they've done, and as they leave, Keyleth asks how Scanlan knew to destroy the pistol. Scanlan reveals it was a total guess.
The sun rises over Whitestone as the citizens clear the streets of the remnants of battle. They laud Vox Machina for saving them, and Vex tells Keyleth to just nod and smile. Cassandra asks Percy if he will take his place on the throne and help rebuild the city. Percy maintains that he is not a leader, and tells Cass she is the most suited to take on the role. Vax approaches Keyleth and tells her he meant his confession the previous night. Keyleth tells him that with their responsibilities as protectors of the realm, as well as her commitment to her aramente, she cannot reciprocate his affections. He understands, and walks away sadly as Vex looks on. She asks Yennen if anyone spotted Ripley escaping, and about the orb in the ziggurat. Scanlan asks if they can stay in Whitestone, but Vax reminds them they have to get back to Emon and clear their names with the Sovereign. Keyleth reveals that she has a spell that could get them home quickly, and communes with the Suntree. Without the dark power feeding on it, she is finally able to revive the ancient tree. Encouraged by Vex, Keyleth opens a portal through the Suntree and they all run through.
Some time later, having been reunited with Pike and Trinket the bear, Vox Machina enjoy time in their restored keep. Percy has augmented his injured hand with metal and residuum, and has completed work on a new pistol. Scanlan has also finished a project, an epic song describing Vox Machina's adventures. Before he can perform it, Captain Jarrett arrives to inform them they have been asked to appear at the palace by Sovereign Uriel. They find the courtyard filled with nobles and dignitaries, as well as Gilmore and the council of Tal'Dorei. Uriel gives a speech to the assembly, telling them of the enemies that have threatened the realm of late, and how he was influenced by them. He praises the actions of Vox Machina in keeping them safe, and in response to his judgment being impaired multiple times, he is stepping down as ruler of Tal'Dorei. The kingdom shall pass to the council as a whole, so that no one person can be corrupted.
He is about to announce Vox Machina as new council members, when suddenly Vex's primeval sense sends pain shooting through her head. Warning bells toll across the city as the source of the alarm soon becomes clear to everyone present. Four gigantic dragons descend from the sky, bearing down on the city.
