- Vox Machina tells Sovereign Uriel of the monstrous culprit behind the village attacks, and track the creature back to its lair. Vox Machina must rise to the occasion and go face-to-face with a beast that is seemingly impossible to kill.
- General Kreig has rallied troops outside of Emon to face the dragon and gives a rousing speech to motivate the soldiers. That night, the dragon arrives in a storm and eviscerates Kreig's forces.
The next day, Kreig returns to Sovereign Uriel and explains that the monster is a Blue Dragon, and he was one of very few survivors of the battle. Sir Fince arrives late to the meeting, followed closely by Vox Machina. The group also survived the dragon, much to Sir Fince's annoyance, and Kreig's delight. Vex feels the dragon's presence again, and suspects one of the council is in league with the beast. Kreig once again suggests marching Emon's army out of the city to confront the dragon. Lady Kema of Vord argues that it would leave the city defenseless should the dragon choose to attack the capital directly, but Uriel will not risk more of his people dying, and give's Kreig permission to move the army at dawn. Vox Machina is escorted out of the palace, and consider what to do next. Vex tells the others that she felt the strange presence again, and they all conclude that Sir Fince must be working with the dragon. Vex sends Vax and pike to see their friend Gilmore to buy a weapon to kill the dragon with, and the rest of the party splits to track down Sir Fince and follow him. Pike and Vax arrive at Gilmore's Glorious Goods. The proprietor, Gilmore, is charmed by Vax, and though they cannot afford a weapon, he does offer them his meager information on blue dragons. The closest thing to a weakness they can find is a poem that states: "The worm shall only find defeat, in the gorge where the twin rivers meet." They find this unhelpful, but nevertheless thank Gilmore for his efforts. After he and Vax flirt some more, the half-elf and gnome leave to find the others. Grog and Scanlan have been wondering the city, and give up hope of finding Sir Fince. Scanlan decides to go to the brothel instead, but nearly runs into Fince. They follow him to a large manor in the upper part of the city, and see him enter with his sword drawn. They alert the others, who meet the two at the house. After several attempts to break the lock on the door fail, Vax easily picks it open. The party enter and realize they are in General Kreig's house, and deduce that Fince is here to murder him. They hear noises coming from a secret cellar, and find Fince gathering documents. He insists that he is not the dragon's ally, and is mearly collecting evidence of the true villain. Just then, he is stabbed from behind by General Kreig. At his arrival, Vex's dragon sense goes crazy. Kreig reveals that he sent Vox Machina to face the dragon because he figured they would never survive. He flees deeper into the cellar with the party in hot pursuit. The come to another chamber filled with magical objects, but Kreig has disappeared. Keyleth accidentally finds a secret portal disguised as a painting. The party go through it and find themselves transported to a freezing cavern in the mountains. The also discover mounds and mounds of gold and treasure, and begin to gather all they can before Vex realizes that it must be the dragon's hoard. Keyleth finds strange orbs embedded in the wall that magically alert Kreig to their presence. They realize that Kreig's plan was to send the army out of Emon so the dragon could wipe out the city. Determined to rid himself of Vox Machina once and for all, he transforms, revealing that he himself is the dragon, Brimsythe. He sends powerful electric blasts after them, and it's all the party can do just to evade his attacks. Vax notices the electric current makes a pattern reminiscent of two rivers meeting at the neck, and realizes that the neck is Brimsythe's weak spot. But first they need to get him on the ground. Scanlan creates an illusion of the party bickering in the open, which draws Brimsythe down to kill them. Before he realizes his mistake, Keyleth conjures vines to hold him down, Percy shoots stalactites down on him, and Vax, helped by Scanlan's giant magical hand, jumps onto the dragon's neck and cuts it open. Pike magically guides Vex's arrow into Brimsythe's open wound, and he desperately charges Vox Machina, allowing for Grog, enraged, to strike the final blow. With the dragon dead, the cavern begins to collapse. The party makes it back through the portal just in time, and Vax leaves the silver coin he gave to the fisherman's son to be buried with the rest of the hoard.
At the palace, Sovereign Uriel congratulates Vox Machina on their success. He awards them all honorary titles as Protectors of the Realm, makes them members of his council, and gives them the deed to a keep in Emon for them to live in. He also tells them that the threat is likely not over, as Kreig may have been part of a larger conspiracy. He is throwing a banquet soon to meet with dignitaries of Tal'Dorei to discuss the situation.
On the road to Emon, a fine carriage is transporting two nobles, Lord and Lady Briarwood, when it is stopped by a fallen tree blocking the road. Lord Briarwood gets out to see what's wrong, and is ambushed by a group of bandits, who demand they hand over their valuables. In a display of superhuman speed and strength, Lord Briarwood brutally kills the would-be thieves, and throws the tree out of the road as the carriage continues its journey.
