A motley crew of criminals gets more than they bargained for when the 12-year-old ballerina they kidnapped for a $50 million ransom turns out to be a bloodthirsty vampire in Abigail, the latest film from the Radio Silence trio of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella. With Abigail recently having its world premiere in New Orleans at the Overlook Film Festival ahead of its April 19th theatrical release via Universal Pictures, Daily Dead had the chance to talk with Matt and Tyler before the world premiere to discuss the vampire and crime film influences behind their horror heist genre mashup, filming in the historic (and potentially haunted) Glenmaroon House in Ireland, working with a star-studded ensemble, and the full-circle emotions of screening Abigail in New Orleans after shooting their first feature in the Big Easy more than a decade ago.

Universal has a long history with vampire films, going back to the 1930s. Their latest, Abigail, offers a reboot of 1936’s Dracula’s Daughter, a hypnotizing work that still stands as one of the best follow-ups to 1931’s Dracula. Now, fresh from its premiere at the Overlook Film Festival, it looks like Universal has marked a successful return to their vampire lineup.
Many reactions from Abigail’s premiere praise the movie for being nearly endlessly entertaining, bringing something fresh to the genre while also giving off the vibe of some of our favorite vampire flicks from decades past:
Abigail is expertly choreographed insanity from Radio Silence that injects new blood into the vampire horror game. You'll be yelling until the very last plié.

The Scream franchise was fairly popular for releasing some of the most enjoyable horror movies in pop culture. Starting with the first Scream movie in 1996, this slasher franchise has 5 more movies and a TV show under its belt. But after Scream 6 (2023), things took a turn when actress Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise. Her social media post about the Israel-Hamas was deemed antisemitic by the production house behind the franchise, and they decided to let go of the actress in November last year.

Melissa Barrera was one of the first and most prominent actors to lose work for speaking out about the Israel-Hamas War when Spyglass Media dropped her from the “Scream” franchise over social media posts that were critical of the Israeli government and American media and expressed support for Palestinian people. Some, including Spyglass Media brass, believed the posts to be antisemitic. And so, after starring in two hit, franchise-reigniting “Scream” movies, Barrera was out, and would not be returning for “Scream 7.”
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Barrera reflects on the fallout from her removal from the “Scream” franchise. While she’s open to someday playing survivor Sam Carpenter again, she’s not holding her breath. “I’ve learned to never say never, but also a lot of things would have to happen for Sam to come back,” Barrera said. “For now, next page, next chapter, and...

On March 12, 2024, Neve Campbell took to her Instagram and shared a picture of the Scream 7 script, announcing that she will be returning as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming Scream installment. This news came as a welcome surprise after Campbell’s highly publicized absence from Scream 6 due to a pay dispute. Sidney had been the main target of the Ghostface killers in the first four Scream movies and had become the iconic final girl of the series. Scream 5, however, took a different approach. The "Scream" franchise is still alive and stabbing. The horror series began back in 1996 with Wes Craven's surprise hit, and it's continued on over the decades. Recently, "Scream 7" fell apart after star Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise, and the film's director, Christopher Landon, subsequently walked away from the project. Now, however, it looks like the seventh film in the series is back on track, with franchise creator Kevin Williamson on board to direct and original star Neve Campbell returning.
With "Scream" back in the news, you might be suddenly inspired to revisit the franchise from the beginning. However, you might also be wondering where to start, since the numbering system of the series is a little out of whack.
Don't worry, we're here to help.

A few months ago, the Scream franchise seemed dead and buried.
Despite a seventh installment getting the official greenlight last year, Melissa Barrera was let go from the franchise due to social media posts about the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Jenna Ortega later left the flick due to her commitments to Wednesday Season 2.
After losing its two leads, the movie then lost director Christopher Landon.
In a surprising twist in the tale, Sidney Prescott is returning as the main attraction.
Neve Campbell took to social media Tuesday to reveal that she had closed a deal to return for the seventh installment of the slasher movie franchise.

Updated with more details: Neve Campbell said Tuesday that she will return as Sidney Prescott for the next film in the Scream franchise.
In an Instagram post today, Campbell said she’s been asked back and is happy to return to the pic, which for now is known only as Untitled Scream 7 and will be directed by original Scream writer Kevin Williamson from a script penned by Guy Busick.
Campbell, an original Scream star, did not appear in last year’s sixth movie of the franchise because of a pay dispute. Her most recent appearance in the series was 2022’s Scream, which served as a franchise reboot. She had signaled as recently as January that she wouldn’t rule out returning to the role for the right price.
“It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies,” Campbell wrote today.

Samara Weaving has earned modern scream queen status with roles in films like The Babysitter, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Mayhem, Ready or Not, Scream VI, and the upcoming horror action movie Azrael, plus a few episodes of the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series. Since Weaving has worked in both the Scream and Evil Dead franchises, she was asked during a new interview with Collider which horror franchise she would like to be a part of next. Her answer: Nightmare on Elm Street.
The filmmakers behind Azrael had originally wanted to cast Billie Eilish in the role Weaving ended up playing. So when she was asked the horror franchise question, she said, “Nightmare on Elm Street. I can do it. Unless Billie Eilish gets it now.“

The Core Four is no more. Although Scream (2022) and Scream VI set up the characters of Samantha Carpenter, Tara Carpenter, Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Chad Meeks-Martin as the new leads of the Scream franchise, that group is not going to end up being in Scream 7, whenever that film goes into production. Jenna Ortega allegedly wanted a substantial pay raise to reprise the role of Tara… and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. So Ortega was out, but Melissa Barrera was on board to come back as Tara’s sister Samantha. Until she was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Mindy may or not be in the movie; we can’t be sure yet, because Jasmin Savoy Brown...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Writer Teases Upcoming Sequel; A Slasher for the Social Media Age?
As we learned last year, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is on board to direct the next installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) on board to write the screenplay. We don’t yet know if the original cast will be back, but the film had been originally announced as a legacy sequel of sorts.

Scream (2022) and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera – who was fired from Scream 7 when comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass Media – has the lead role in the film Your Monster, a project she had previously described as a “horror rom-com musical.” JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see the movie at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and wrote a 6/10 review you can read at This Link. We still don’t know when a wider audience is going to have the opportunity to watch the movie, but it has just taken a positive step forward: Deadline reports that Vertical has acquired the North American distribution rights.

Production on MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it Here) and X (watch that one at This Link), is said to have wrapped last May, and we’ve been anxiously waiting to hear a release date announcement ever since. Now, the news we’ve been waiting for has finally arrived! A24 has announced (via Deadline) that they will be giving the film a theatrical release on July 5th!
MaXXXine is written and directed by West. Mia Goth reprises the role of X survivor Maxine Minx, a burlesque performer and adult film actress with the goal of being a star. The film will follow Maxine, after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame, setting out to make it as an actress in 1980s Los Angeles.

The Final Destination franchise is returning to life with a brand new movie, and we’ve learned that filming is underway this week. Additionally, we now have an official title!
The sixth installment in the saga is titled Final Destination: Bloodlines.
Producer Craig Perry writes on social media this week, “After a long, hard slog through the pandemic and the strikes, Day One is finally in the can. 2025 will mark the 25th anniversary of the release of the first installment in the franchise. To honor the occasion with another worldwide theatrical release is a rare and wonderful thing.”
Perry’s post continues, “See you next year! Ps: I know, I know — Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. But this is the title we’ve had for three years, and we’re keeping it… for now.”
Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (Freaks) are directing the fresh installment.
What can we expect from the upcoming Final Destination 6?...

Oh, the Scream franchise – the gift that keeps on giving… nightmares. From the ’90s to the not-so-roaring 2020s, this series has been hacking away at our peaceful slumber with varying degrees of success. So, grab your favorite stabbing knife, and let’s rank these bad boys from ‘meh’ to ‘please check under my bed.’ 1. Scream 3 (2000) Scream 3 is like that one trick-or-treater who shows up with a store-bought mask and expects full-sized candy bars. This installment tries so hard to be meta that it trips over its own Hollywood-centric plot. The film extends...

Maverick film making as shown in the work of Norman J. Warren, the brilliant burned-out Michael Reeves and others is hard to come by. The French based an entire now-classic group of films known as The New Wave of the sixties. Scripts were often not complete, or bare ideas, ad hoc sets, lack of money, filming on the run with camera angles, cut and in some cases non-professional actors. This can yield some fascinating results on screen giving new talent in from and before the camera a chance to shine. It is unfair to compare a film like Gav Chuckie Steele’s The Shadow of Death with something iconic nor will I do that, yet the film is about telling a story making this appear to be ‘slapped together.’

Two months of horror releases down, ten to go! With our 2024 Horror Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the other horror movies we can’t wait to check out this year. For now, we’re only including movies that have a known release date, so films like the X and Pearl sequel MaXXXine and the remakes/reboots of The Toxic Avenger and Witchboard are currently absent because they don’t have a release date yet, even though they’re likely to show up at some point in 2024. Here we go:
Imaginary – Theatrical, March 8
Director Jeff Wadlow and Blumhouse Productions have previously worked together on the 2018 film Truth or Dare and the 2020 horror version of Fantasy Island, and now their latest collaboration stars DeWanda Wise of Jurassic World: Dominion as a woman whose stepdaughter develops “an eerie attachment” to a stuffed bear named Chauncey… who is more than he appears to be.

The 1990s were full of top-notch science fiction films that won over critics and set the box office on fire -- after all, we're talking about a decade that produced "Independence Day" (which beat "Mars Attacks!" to theaters), "The Matrix" (albeit with some complex behind-the-scenes activity), "The Fifth Element" (ripping off Plato to great effect) and the list goes on and on. But not every sci-fi release can be a winner, and the decade also had its fair share of stinkers. Whether they were derivative of other (better) films, hacked to pieces as a result of studio interference, or let down by the limitations of 1990s technology, there are endless reasons why an ambitious science-fiction project might crash and burn.
However, many of these ambitious but panned sci-fi movies are often not without their redeeming factors, and despite their negative reception -- especially on Rotten Tomatoes -- you can often...

Mark Kermode on… director Wes Craven, who made horror ‘a positive force in a world filled with fear’
As A Nightmare on Elm Street turns 40, here’s to the softly spoken American creator of some of cinema’s most memorable scares, from razor-clawed serial killer Freddy Krueger to the sequel-spawning Scream
“Scary movies don’t create fear,” the American writer-director Wes Craven told me on more than one occasion. “They release fear.” This was a mantra for the horror maven, along with his equally forthright declaration that scary movies were a “bootcamp for the soul”, teaching psychological survival skills within the safety of the cinema.
Over the course of his career, Craven, who died in 2015 aged 76, made some of the most memorably influential scary movies of the 20th century, from gruelling grindhouse classic The Last House on the Left (1972; Plex) to the sequel-spawning, genre-defining popular hit Scream (1996). Yet in person, the softly spoken auteur seemed more like an avuncular academic than a Hollywood frightmonger.

Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.
However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.
While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

Something strange is happening in the neighborhood. Time to call the Ghostbusters. Sony has just released the final trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. While it’s been addressed in past trailers and TV spots that this new evil entity that is taking over New York City can scare people to death, and there’s been a mention of a “ghost army,” this final trailer emphasizes that every ghost that the Ghostbusters have ever caught will be unleashed. This provides an opportunity for the film to showcase old fan favorites as well as make references to the wild, unique ghosts of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon and toy line. The notion of “every ghost they ever caught” sounds like an ultimate final conflict, but director Gil Kenan has stated that he already has ideas for sequels beyond Frozen Empire.

It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.
First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. From beloved Paddington director Paul King, the film follows the adventures of a young Willy Wonka as he looks to become the world’s best (and weirdest) chocolatier. Later in March on Max, there’s also Dream Scenario, a highly-regarded comedy boasting Nicolas Cage as Paul Matthews, who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams for unknown reasons, and who naturally becomes very famous as a result of this strange phenomena.
Series-wise, the biggest show on Max this month is The Regime. It packs a solid cast, including Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant, and tells the story of “life within the walls of a modern...

In 2023, it was announced that the filmmaking team Radio Silence was stepping away from the "Scream" franchise to helm a new Universal monster movie. But this wasn't going to be yet another "Mummy" remake and had nothing to do with the ill-fated Dark Universe. No, this was a brand-new horror creation titled "Abigail"... sort of.
Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo responsible for the fifth and sixth "Scream" films, are overseeing this latest effort, which focuses on a team of crooks who kidnap a wealthy man's 12-year-old daughter (Alisha Weir) and hole up in a mansion while they await the ransom payment. The only problem is that the sweet little ballerina they kidnapped is actually a bloodthirsty vampire who, if the trailer is anything to go by, is not only ruthless when it comes to taking out her captors but has a truly sadistic side, as...

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was a massive hit for PlayStation and continues to impress fans with the bizarre introduction of Scream in the video game series.

Before Winona Ryder was known for "Stranger Things," she was known for being "strange and unusual." At least, that's how her character in 1988's "Beetlejuice" put it. The actor would become a goth icon following her role in Tim Burton's 1988 effort, "Beetlejuice," with appearances in "Heathers" (1989), and "Edward Scissorhands" (1990) further cementing her alt-girl status. But there's no doubt "Beetlejuice" was where it all began.
The actor starred as Lydia Deetz, the teenage daughter of Charles and Delia, who move into a new house in Winter River, Connecticut, only to find it haunted by the ghost with the most himself, Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton). In the movie, Keaton's rambunctious supernatural miscreant was hired to spook the Deetz family by the former owners of the house, Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alex Baldwin), who suddenly found themselves in the afterlife following a car accident. The inclusion of films from countries from the former Ussr, as in the case of Uzbek “Sunday” and Kazakh “Scream” was once more the cherry on the top, in one of the best years in terms of film selection for the festival, which celebrated its 30th edition this year. Earlier this month, we learned that Game of Thrones cast members Sophie Turner and Kit Harington will be reuniting for writer/director Natasha Kermani’s Gothic horror film The Dreadful… and close on the heels of that announcement comes the news that Turner has also signed on to star in a psychological thriller called Trust, which is coming our way from Twisted Pictures, the production company behind the Saw franchise.
Twisted Pictures has secured a multi-picture deal with Republic Pictures, with Republic Pictures acquiring the worldwide rights to Trust.
