Absolutely brilliant
namob-4367328 February 2021
Death from the Sandman Universe is one of the best characters of all time. Imagine taking the idea of death itself, not the harbinger of death nor the guy with scythe playing chess, but the actual concept of death, an entity that represent and embodies death (and life) of all things and make this character into a goth sexy young girl and make her more compelling and interesting than the entire MCU+DCU put together. How do you do this? Well, you let Neil Gaiman write it of course.

I do not think this little video fully 100% capsulate this character, mainly because this is a (very) short story and you cannot really convey the ful scope of death in such a short time. Nor do I think this is absolutely perfect 10/10, but this is still excellent and brilliantly done. This both bring tears, hope and sadness at the same time. Excellent work and I hope they can bring the upcoming Sandman TV show to this or higher levels.

Phenomenal, bittersweet, well-animated short
abboccanfuso1 February 2021
I haven't read Neil Gaiman's Sandman series yet, but this short has made me excited to. The animation is pretty good, it could have been better, but it fit the tone of the short. The story is excellent, and very relatable for people who self-criticize a lot. Overall, this was an incredible short with a great story, voice acting, themes, tone, etc.

Kept within the spirit of The Sandman while offering up another angle to the character of Death. Would love to see more stories told with these characters and this animation style.

This will make you cry

Warning: Spoilers
I rarely review movies on IMDb, this must be the best DC showcase shorts after Jonah Hex. The animation is top notch. The music at the end will make you weep and feel sorry for the protagonist. Hardships are all part of a person's journey and failures latch onto you like your demons following you wherever you go to torment you. If we could forgive ourselves for past mistakes, every single one of us would be in a better place.

"The end of your story was written in the Book of Destiny before you sucked in your first breath" Very rarely I give a 10/10 rating to movies let alone a short animated DC series. But this movie is really beyond all! A story of a painter & his last distressing time with the angel of death...

Without words

I already agree with almost every other review and I can't think of anything more to add. I just wanted to say this:

  • My eyes got wet and I'm a big a** man. It wasn't very far from tears being involved... Last time that happened while watching a movie was maybe 10 years ago.

Excellent

Absolutely loved it. Beautifully animated in a style of Manga and written by one of my favourite comic book writers, J M DEMATTEIS. I would say that this is definitely one of the best shorts from DC so far. (IMHO) I won't give anything away, I highly recommend you watch it. It can be found on both the Blu-Rays Wonder Woman: Bloodlines and Batman:Death In The Family.

Can't wait for Netflix live-action adaptation
ashfordofficial21 February 2022
DC Showcase: Death is a sad and gritty story portrayed with brilliant animation style and breathtaking music. Its emotional depth cannot be contain in a single short. It needs to be free like Death and flow through the timeless reality.

I'm glad that DC giving The Sandman the respect it deserves. I hope they make a live-action adaptation in the future.

I never thought it could surprise me

As the story goes on you feel more and more connected to the main character and the ending is just awesome. I promise you wont regret watching it. It really makes you feel the struggle and the relief of death, for a DC shortfilm i did not expected it to be so deep probably that is why it hit me so hard. I dont want to spoil anything so go and watch it, it is a 10/10 for me.

Pretentious drivel. I could see 12 year olds enjoying this and thinking it is deep but for anyone older it's an easy pass.

As a Neil Gaiman fan and a fan of the DC Vertigo Sandman universe, I was really surprised to know of this film's existence. This story was very touching and spoke to me on a personal level. I loved every minute of this and hope to see more of Gaiman's work adapted to the screen.

The most beautiful and emotional in history
eyepatchvx31 March 2021
I saw a lot of movies and animations. From DC to Marvel. But this work is really wonderful. Very emotional, sad, the best characterization. A short but very magnificent and beautiful work.

In my opinion, it is the best work in history. Of course in my opinion.

Many thanks to those who made this work.

you know the feeling when you cry but you are happy, it's the opposite

9 because it shouldn't be 10 9 because I didn't even want to watch 9 because I wanted to give it a 10 but I can't maybe it's just me who aren't familiar with sad/dark movie but briefly telling the background of watching this movie before getting into it it was part of collection of short movie , first one was about story of Robin death , next was zeta beam or something , afterward phantom stranger , while the first was the reason I started watching the whole collection, the two after was measurable or at least weren't at correct time so I was totally disappointed , and that was the last , at the beginning I said I will close with the worst movie of all but then ... it spokes to me, when I saw the end I realized I haven't understand it from first time , watched it again , and thereafter repeated the ending alone like twice , and every time I was crying , it's a sad story , really sad story , first time I saw it I thought well the demons who are his fears are the Death somehow , but the truth was even crucial, now I don't know whether it was a good thing I watched it in the middle of the day or I should have waited till the evening , as I feel my day ruined somehow and nothing taste good no more, I am trying to search for another thing to watch but even my favorite movies and series doesn't have taste, I was looking for a continue or anything relevant , obviously there isn't after reading my review you might sense a huge negative energy or review , the thing it's not, well the movie somehow is all about that but in slightly elegant way that even after writing this review he still deserve 10 , but 9 all he gets

Starts okay, gets really good towards the end (no pun intended)
Horst_In_Translation9 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is "Death", a 19-minute animated short film from 2019, so still relatively new and this is among the more recent DC Showcase releases. The director is Sam Liu and he is pretty prolific and experienced. Same is true for J.M. DeMatteis, who was in charge of the screenplay and is one of three writers credited here. From my rating you can already see that in my opinion this is certainly not a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. What surprises me a bit is that this is an entirely American production because if you take a look at the crew it is packed with Asians, South Koreans mostly I think and, maybe as a consequence, the two lead actors also have at least Asian blood in their veins. Voice actors that is obviously. I thought this was a pretty tense watch. Early on, it was only good, but especially the final sequence with the two protagonists was pretty amazing. Very nice also in terms of tone and atmosphere. I also liked the name Vincent for the male protagonist. It has a bit of sadness and tragedy to it, also if you take a look at van Gogh's life, but I immediately think of the pretty sad song by Don McLean I think, also about van Gogh, and I also think of a Tom Cruise character from a movie I like, which may seem random, but he was also a bit of a tortured soul for sure. Maybe even an artist in his field of profession somehow. Okay, back to this film here. The fact that Vincent is a painter is definitely not a coincidence. More van Gogh. And also insanity is getting the better of him. More parallels. Almost too obvious. Insanity is of course defined by the demons in his head, the voices constantly telling him how much of a failure he is. But luckily, in the first actual twist of events here, he meets a young woman with dark hair, emo looks and she may be the one helping him to crush his demons. Be aware though that more could get crushed. When he paints her picture in the last third of the film, the demons vanish. But as we find out the reason is not only that he found back his confidence, but also that he is dealing with a much stronger presence compared to his demons. No matter if you wwant to call her simply Death the way she is called in the credits or if you want to call her the Angel of Death, the moment when he understands he is dead and who she or "she" is in fact is a very haunting moment. And things do stay that strong afterwards as they keep talking, as he finally realizes that the painting is not what keeps him alive, but that his craft, his artistic talent is the thing that makes him immortal in a way and that he should be grateful for it. So I must say the fact that the painting stayed intact at the end felt a bit contradictory to me, but it also shows that Death is not evil. It is all written. One moment slightly before that that I did not like too much is when he talks to her (or "her") about how he sees something special in her, especially the sadness. He was right obviously, but it felt a bit exaggerated to me. Still I must say I have to dig deep here for flaws and moments I did not like too much. It is a good film early on with how he gets fired, the bar scene, the flashback to his girlfriend leaving him that turned into a great film with the final confrontations. If you like animation, especially more serious anime, then this one deserves to be checked out. Almost a must-see I'd say and maybe you can even learn something about your own life here. There is also pretty good attention to detail. Look how the bartender talks about a character dying. It may be a character we do not know, but it is a bit of foreshadowing we quickly forget about when Vincent verbally confronts the fictitious man at the table. This is when his demons prevail over Death. The ending is the exact opposite. I also liked how they depicted time standing still. Really talented approach, especially the shots outside. So yeah, this is a definite contender for my favorite DC Showcase. I haven't seen them all (yet), but right now it is in the top spot I'd say. I highly recommend checking it out. And don't switch it off after the first ten minutes. It gets better eventually, not that it is bad early on. Slightly under 20 minutes that I have no hesitation in giving an enthusiastic thumbs-up. Go for it! Still I must say it is not the perfect 10 out of 10 the oother reviewer makes it out to be. And finally, I am quite surprised to see that the one piece of awards recognition it got is a Daytime Emmy Awards not. That was pretty much the last occasion I would have expected this to be a part of.

I'm 21 yr old female. Wasnt a huge fan of anything in the dc universe. Maybe teen Titans and Batman and all that but. Ultimately I'm not that big of a fan. When I stumbled across this short film it brought me into a whole new light to the dc universe. Now I'm interested in learning more and watching more and reading more about it and seeing new characters and stuff. The endless and death especially will forever be my favorite. This short really got me into the endless and I even bought a paper back manga. I'm currently reading it. I'm obsessed seriously they need to make more om her!!!!!

At just 19 minutes long, this is hands down the greatest animation, from any company, I have ever seen. Heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. See it if you can. 10/10.

This was surprisingly good...

I remember reading the "Death" comics back in my late teenage years. So when I stumbled upon this 2019 DC animated short in 2022, of course I had to sit down and see what writer J. M. DeMatteis and director Sam Liu would do with an animated version of the character and story concept.

Color me impressed. While just running at a mere 19 minutes, then writer J. M. DeMatteis managed to capture the essence of the comic books and delivered a very wholehearted storyline and script. I was surprised with the outcome of "DC Showcase: Death" and it certainly was a very nice addition to the "DC Showcase" entries.

The storyline told in "DC Showcase: Death" was enjoyable and it was something that felt it captured the spirit and essence of the comic book universe. And it was also at the same time a very beautiful story, so it was a win-win here.

The art style and animation style used in this 2019 short was good. It was very pleasing for the eyes, and it certainly was nice to see "Death" brought to life on the screen.

I can warmly recommend you sit down to watch "DC Showcase: Death", if you enjoyed the comic books or enjoy the "DC Showcase" series.

My rating of "DC Showcase: Death" lands on an eight out of ten stars.

I'm not a particularly emotional man but this piece moved me to tears. I won't say much about it because it's too short and I think you'd do better to see it for yourself.

Not Super but still a heroic story.
Payback10169 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Before I get into the movie, a little backstory. I first heard of Death of The Endless when I was in High School reading the DC Encyclopedia. Other than that, until a decade ago I was unaware of Neil Gaiman as a writer let alone a comic book maker, save for watching the stop motion adaptation of his work Coraline.

It wasn't until recently that I heard of the full story, The Sandman. In which Death of The Endless was one of the characters, but it wasn't until last winter, that I seen this beautiful embodiment of moving on.

Most of the time Death or The Grim Reaper or whatever force you call it that allows you to pass onto the afterlife, has often been portrayed as either at best Neutral or at worst evil and loves his job. Gaiman thought otherwise and the result was what I seen in this short.

The story is about a man named Vincent who is a down on his luck artist in Gotham city. So needless to say there were so many ways that poor guy would have gotten killed. He gets fired from his job at Arkham asylum and haunted by inner demons of his past. While drowning his sorrows, he meets a mysterious, friendly and beautiful woman in Gothic attire. She makes small talk with him and deduces by his look he wants to paint her portrait. However he didn't have the guts to ask thanks due to his inner demons. Depressed at missing an opportunity, he overdoses on Heroin and passes out all while his demons watch. He gets awakened by a car crash and finds the same woman in an altercation with two people. He runs down to defend her, only to find them vanished, with two body bags in their place.

The woman convinces Vincent to show her his work and when he reveals his motivations to paint her portrait, she accepts. Once finished he realized that Time had stopped despite painting for hours. It was then and there, she revealed, that he died from the overdose and that she's Death. Come to claim him. At first he's upset, but then excited that he managed to leave a meaningful picture behind. Unfortunately the house goes up in flames thanks to him dying with a lit cigarette in his hands. He accuses Death of Cruelty, but she mentions that his fate was already written before he was even born. He begs her to save the painting but comes to a realization, that he drew a picture of her as a child and that she's been watching him over ever since. She takes Vincent to move on and the firefighters discover the painting. Intact among the ruins. Death granted his final request.

This story was one of the most messed up ones I've ever seen. There was lot's of scary moments with the innerdemons, lot's of mystery moments with Vincent's interaction with Death and most importantly a heavy stack of tragedy that leads to a surprisingly happy ending. Poor Vincent struggled his whole life with nothing to show for it until his life was over and when his legacy was left behind, he died happy.

That is a Death we all should aspire to one day. It also shows that not all DC characters have to be Super to be a hero. Death encouraged him to give it one last go, he conquered his inner demons which I believe is the work of Despair of The Endless and when it was all over he was able to move on and she was able to help him. It showed a different way of heroics.

I want to see more of this. Not all heroics are super, but they still matter.

People love to hate something that reflects themselves (as some human beings are failed to be grateful),and that's what i called hypocrisy at its best. As for me Im ENJOYING every bit of this short myself and no complains. It was near perfect🖤
