I'm in
shell579126 April 2020
Ok, the first 3 episode, I was kind of disappointed. I thought there's a lot a slow motion and a bit too slow, I almost fall asleep watching it. But after watching the 4the episode, I'm hook. I can't wait to watch the next one. I am excited about it and I can't wait to see more of Lee min Ho and see where the story go!

Great Watch
alex-cornett3 May 2020
I don't know why people are saying this started slow? There is a ton of action in the beginning. I think there is enough to set the stage for viewers to know a lot can/probably will happen in this series. They have done a great job building out the characters backstories and side stories along the way. This is my first kdrama and I love the cinematography and some of the transitions. There are some cultural things implied here...context about the history of Korea and some local cultural things (celebrities, food, etc) but even when I don't exactly get the joke or reference, I can still tell that it what is going on. So far this whole thing gives me a prince and me mixed with lion king vibe. Loving it!

Fascinating, elegant, smart, funny and thrilling
HangInThere202327 April 2020
I have not reviewed a movie before but felt compelled to share how much I love this masterpiece. It has been nitpicked to pieces making one wonder whether it has indeed been sabotaged. It is too beautiful to be left to suffer such an injustice. For example, it was lambasted because a temple that was onscreen for, like, a second, did not look Korean. The nitpickers had totally ignored the fact that this is a FANTASY drama, hitting the show below the belt by taking advantage of Korean viewers' patriotism thereby pushing them away. Nevertheless, it became an international hit, having been #1 most streamed TV show on Netflix in at least 11 countries and in the top 10 in at least 19 other countries.

The story centers around King Lee Gon, played to perfection by Lee Min Ho, who found a portal to a parallel universe where he met gutsy detective Jeong Tae Eul played by Kim Go Eun. Dedicated to her job, Tae Eul doubts Lee Gon's fantastic tale of being a king in a parallel world and tries to discover his identity. She is not one to go gaga for a gorgeous stranger at first sight no matter how openly he expresses his interest in her. But her unfavorable first impression of him is a source of amusing repartee so I didn't mind at all that she took her time to fall for him. How she finally believes him is one of the most thrilling and satisfying developments of the series.

The story is rather complicated, but the pace gives viewers enough time to understand what is going on. Scenes and dialogues that might seem irrelevant turn out to be important, so viewers need to be observant, including of those relating to the romance between the leads as they tend to express their feelings more with their eyes and facial expressions than cheesy lines. Viewers who prefer simple plots might not appreciate the complications and mysteries, but those who go along with the ride would be rewarded with a beautiful and fascinating adventure.

(Netflix stats added on 7/6/2020)

Update (9/25/2023): Since this drama came out, I've been bothered by the controversies that derailed its reception in South Korea, baffled by their incongruity. This drama is OBVIOUSLY anti-Japanese. It has scenes where Japanese characters are OBVIOUSLY villainous. Yet, it has been attacked because a temple that appears for less than a minute looks Japanese and some Japanese flags were accidentally placed in the warships of the fictitious Kingdom of Corea for less than minute. Many viewers would not even notice these minutiae! I definitely didn't. In fact, I watched the war scene more than 5 times to see the misplaced flags but all I could see were the flags of the fictitious Corea (one is the red-and-blue flag resembling the Joseon flag and the other is the King's flag with the flower). This is the height of nitpicking. Anti-Japanese viewers did not appreciate the OBVIOUSLY anti-Japanese theme of the drama, but instead complained to high heaven about virtually invisible mistakes that detractors kept insinuating were Japanese leaning. It did not help that South Korean news sites kept featuring these controversies. This aroused my suspicion that there is more to this than meets the eye. And I might have gotten my answer. Recently, this drama was banned in South Korea together with Pachinko, another drama starring Lee Min Ho. Two out of six banned dramas star LMH. And that aligns with my impression that some people in the Kdrama industry have some beef against LMH. Going through social media in 2020 to get more information about the controversies, I saw a shocking amount of antagonism towards LMH. In a drama fan site, a group of haters hogged the comment section of this drama, heckling, harassing and bullying those who posted positive comments about it. A normal viewer who doesn't like a drama would leave a comment or two, probably drop the drama and get on with his life. Right? These haters, who violently objected to being called haters, went on and on and on about alleged flaws of the drama, not letting up even after the finale was aired. If they hated the drama that much, why didn't they drop it and let the fans of the drama enjoy it? They turned out to be fans of LMH rivals in the industry.

Beautiful and awesome drama!
emmarose2126 April 2020
Mind-blowing plot, superb acting, stunning visuals, heart-tugging soundtrack - this drama has it all and more. Lee Min Ho's depiction of a handsome, elegant, benevolent and scientific king is perfect, as is Kim Go Eun as a dedicated, no-nonsense, taekwondo-master detective who decided to be brave because not everyone can be. I love how their relationship and chemistry developed from her initially thinking he was a crazy deluded weirdo to that heart-stopping moment when she found out he was not. The drama gets better the more it is watched. It is filled with delightful nuggets, the humor of which I missed on my first viewing, such as when she told him to "park your horse on the side road to the right" or when she carelessly tossed away his watch after he told her to take good care of it or when she sneakily took his DNA sample while he was explaining the parallel universe theory or when she told him his eyes look like those of a criminal and he stopped his explanation about quantum mechanics to say, "I don't know about other things, but I know my eyes are charming. I was born with deep-set eyes." Ha ha ha, an honest king, too!

Very believable!!!
cynthiaamande25 April 2020
I just finished episode 4 and I'm so excited. Gahhh I can't wait for next Friday. I don't understand why people are complaining and comparing it to CLOY and goblin. I found both shows slow in a lot of places but you don't see me comparing them. I love the build up on this show and I understand that the writers had to make this as believable as possible for a show about parallel universes. I also find Jung Ta-eul's reaction very good for someone who doesn't believe in science and has a man claiming to be king is an imaginary country. I would definitely not expect her to go jumping into his arms. I love LMH's majesty. He is very believable as a king. So regal. I am very intrigued by all the politics and diabolical plots going on on the side. I really can't wait to see how it all unfolds. The special effects are also very good. I don't want to give away spoilers but that time-stopping trick...wow. All in all everything about this show intrigued me.

Not your ordinary kdrama
ycelg_chronus19 May 2020
This is not your ordinary Kdrama. The storyline and cinematography are well-thought. It's a breath of fresh air from the typical kdrama. I was personally not into LMH. His past characters were all the same to me. I wasn't really impressed with his acting. But I think LMH gave justice to his role as an emperor in this drama. His acting skills have massively improved and they way he puts emotions is not overly done (unlike his previous roles). KGE, on the other hand, is an excellent actress. She got me started with this drama. :) her ability to control her emotions, her acting voice, facial expressions are just superb; very natural. Oh and her crying scenes! When these two actors try to build romance, no words needed. Their eyes say it all. I just wish they make the product placement a bit more subtle. So if you like cheesy drama with a boring plot, this is not for you.

A Unique Drama Series
cleacatipay12 October 2020
I like it.. i like the concept of the two worlds of the people with the same identity but with different names and fate. I used to watch historical kdramas with actors wearing hanboks so its really refreshing to watch a King in suits and coats and royal guards in horses with guns and swords..lol.. Einstien's law of relativity also got me hooked in this series.. using of the word DOORS instead of the term BLACK HOLE where the past, present and the future are connected.. the only thing that confused me is the ending.. are they just going thru doors their whole life? Who will be the King's heir? Coz obviously they cant get married and have a family.. i hoped luna and ji hyun did not exist in the first place.. i hoped that Tae Eul had choose to be the queen of the kingdom of Corea.. the king has to have an heir,anyway.. Tbh, im not satisfied.. traveling thru time is considered to be violating the Law of Nature.. things can get messed up.. but yeah, i still like it.. both great actors.. good job!

Exceeded my already very high expectations 👏

TL-DR: Fantastic show, you won't be disappointed. Go watch!!

Felt compelled to create an account JUST to rate this show. I saw the negative press on this and felt personally offended? lol. THIS SHOW IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND REFRESHING how can y'all not like it, I am so confused. Sure, it's starts off a little slow. But there is SO MUCH CONTENT, we need that time to process everything. They didn't rush it and I'm so glad. I feel like the build up is absolutely necessary. The acting is superb, I'm SO happy to see Lee Min Ho on screen again. I am enjoying every minute of this show. I've already rewatched the first four episodes twice now. I cannot wait until Friday for more to come out!

TKEM made me fall in love
jiwonoc6 February 2022
With Lee Minho since first noticing him in 2010 with Boys Over Flowers. Researching him got me into over 10 years of being SHINee fan but I didn't watch another drama of LMH. Then I recently watched TKEM. I couldn't stop watching and finished within 2 days. Who doesn't love a fairy tale...add a fantasy element and the perfect King plus bodyguard and it's magic. Now I'm watching every drama and movie the inimitable LMH has been casted and all are so great. He's so magnetic. Can't wait til Pachinko and more dramas with Hallyu King Lee Minho.

GIVES ME CHILLS!
schooltheresaseem28 May 2020
It's a little hard to follow, jumping from one parallel universe to the next. Nonetheless, I have to keep watching because Lee Min Ho is compelling as usual, and the other characters add to the suspense without missing a beat. I also have to keep watching just to make sure I have figured out all of the elements / characters correctly. It's a very cool concept, as I like science fiction, but it is not the typical K-drama to which we may have become accustomed during the 'stay-at-order'. But that kind of makes it more fun!

Unparalleled Story Line & Great Actors
apobleteca30 May 2020
This show had helped me eased boredom in this time of pandemic. It made my brain works, think analytically, search about prime numbers, understand the theory of quantum mechanics and parallel universe. This is a great comeback for Lee Min Ho. He has shown great acting ability. He look so regal and just fit to be "The King". The cinematography is also exceptional. It made me think to go to Korea someday and visit those places - Busan & Seoul. The King Eternal Monarch is not an ordinary Korean Drama. I am looking forward for the next episodes and will surely watch it on Netflix over and over again. Kudos to the writer. Congratulations to all the casting and staffs. I am hoping that they will be recognized by award giving bodies on this achievement.

backnblack-0612325 April 2020
This series and ive only seen the three thats out are done quite well its a little hard for me to follow as i'm at the mercy of subtitles but im happy wit hit so far, thank goodness its not the same cookie cutter KD thats tailored for young Korean women, there is enough for all in this if you want a silly romcom plenty to watch.Time will tell how good this is we all know how bad KD can get.

HEADACHE
Mr_Avenger21 June 2021
A really mess concerning the storyline and the whole plot has some gaps. Parallel universe ,future, past, parallel past, just a headache for nothing. A bad script only make me feel tired while watching this. Especially in the three last episodes.

Also, the lead couple fell in love but there was no development for me to feel anything for them . Just a poor love story with an unremarkable chemistry.

However, there was some funny moments and some interesting plot twists.

The ost also was nice. The costumes and the acting skills were good too.

A good cast but the bad script ruins everything.

Stellar, thriller, romantic & out of this world!
singakd1 May 2020
Kim Go eun is my absolute favorite thing about this show along with the script, other supporting cast and Lee Min Ho King character. Go Eun adds the much needed emotions to Kdramas. She is such a breathe of fresh air! Simply cannot take my eyes of her. She is natural and couldnt imagine anyone else for this strong role. Quote, Thankfully she isn't just another damsel in distress looking to be saved. In line with her character, she is everything a police detective should be: observant and skeptical, in relentless pursuit of the truth, unquote. The show in itself is fairly unchattered concept which is another breathe of fresh air. I had to rewatch all episodes because they are THAT good and each has a bit of easter egg in it. Goblin, descendants, Mr Sunshine and now The King, Kim Eun-sook you are a genius and more!

After five episodes it just keeps getting better.
duveyoung26 April 2020
I'm a real person in America -- not a bot or paid-for reviewer. I meant every one of the ten stars I'm giving the series -- so far.

This series just is knocking me over. I sure hope this continues. I actually check the time while watching only to be "sad" that the end of the episode is WAY TOO CLOSE NOW. This begins at the five minute mark. Heh.

I love kdramas, but whoa, this one steps it up. The richness of possible plots allures when two whole dimensions are to be explored. Talk about doubling down on kdrama's well known standard dynamics -- two versions fully sussed.

The personality of the King is so well written and the actor nails it. The "BABE" is just perfect. Not a "doll face" sweetie pie, but a mature AND BEAUTIFUL WOMAN worthy of a King. She snarks at the King and melts our heart with her innocence. Nice.

If possible, don't view the series until it has all been streamed so that you can binge on the entire set going without food and water and sometimes even oxygen when you hold your breath during the viewing.

12 Episodes in, I'm still can't wait for the next episode. To help me suffer less I've watched all the episodes twice. But it wasn't enough. Am now on a two day binge -- doing the whole series from scratch to today, and HOO WEE did I learn a lot more. I see now I should have BEEN EVEN MORE APPRECIATIVE. This thing's got great writing . . . and everything else. Most kdramas have about four to ten relationships that need to be resolved to a higher clarity, and this makes for some hard slogging to "keep all subplots fresh so that the viewer always knows who thinks what about whom," but The King's writing effortlessly keep us updated -- we don't have to "study." And the writer has to keep us hep about each character TWICE! It's quite a mastery of juggling. At this point in the series, I have zero idea of how it will end. So many possibilities! And THEY GOTTA JUST GOTTA START RIGHT NOW ON NEXT SEASON. This is a winner. Series wrap-up IT'S A TOTAL WINNER. So good, I watched the series from the first episodes THREE TIMES because I couldn't stand waiting for the next episode.

Unique story
annisaaahmad9 May 2020
If you really into different and unique genre, this is for you. However i don't recommend this drama to everyone, because know a lot of people found this drama bad and weird ( it's not bad, they have great visuals and characters)

Please don't read the negative reviews while you watching this unless this is not your typical drama it's really worth the time.

Parallel Worlds
vivianla23 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I read that the writer of the drama was also the writer who wrote Goblin. How does she come up with these amazing stories?!

I absolutely love the premise but I felt slight frustration with the execution as there are some questions left unanswered. For example...why did Ok-nam come to the kingdom when she is from the Republic? I know she asked Tae-eul about the war but it still feels like a knot untied.

I wanted to feel more deeply about the meaning in this drama and the idea of parallel worlds. How your actions in one world perhaps affects your counterpart? Some sort of deeper story.

The ending was a little too happy-go-lucky for me. Tae-eul and Gon frolic through different eras, gates, worlds - it seems irresponsible but I guess the intention is they have plenty of dating spots to choose from and it was to be seen as romantic.

I felt so sad the tight bond of Tae-eul's inner circle was broken and separated. I love that group especially the scene of them in 2016 at a restaurant. They help each other like family. Shinjae no longer exists. I feel the pain like as if he was killed off but it is just that he is in the kingdom now. When Tae-eul goes to chase criminals and she is with new officers we don't know, the pain sort of hit harder. I understand they kept Jangmi but the police crew's bond was like nothing other.

At least Yeong somehow was recovered and I would have liked to see that scene rather than just accept Gon somehow got past the guards. Only Yeong besides our main couple still has his memories. It's so bittersweet.

The opening to this drama - I imagine it on the big screen and can feel how it could take my breath away. I did think it would be more special and breathtaking but I particularly love the part when they list the actors' names.

The guy who plays Yeong/Eunseob, Lee Minho, Kim Go Eun, and the actor who played Shinjae were my favourites regarding the acting in this drama. I love their characters as well as Jangmi who is such an innocent new recruit despite his appearance. Jangmi is so reliable and caring for others.

One of my Favorite KDs
karen-loethen6 May 2020
OK first, Lee Min Ho, second, Woo Do-Hwan.

I'm on the sixth episode and so many references from past episodes are finally being explained; so be patient! History of the parallel universe of Corea are being revealed and the drama is deepening.

I am loving it!

Great Story But Has Some Flaws
PriestMarmore1 August 2020
The story is really good and a overall 9/10. The only negative things I would say about this series are the fact that the story might be a little bit confusing at times (not only on the first episode but also when they go back and forth) and the acting (basically only the laughs) of some characters (like Lee Gon and Prime Minister Koo) could be better because even though a "fake" laugh might feel like to little that takes away a little bit of the immersiveness. To conclude, I totally recommend this drama

Had to watch first episode twice but it was worth it
silvanet-308-66950529 April 2020
It seems as if I've been waiting forever for this, and I wasn't the least bit disappointed. Like many I fell in love with Go Eun Kim from her role in "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God." She is one of my favorite S. Korean actresses. Kim Eun Sook is simply a superb screenwriter. The end of the first episode grabbed me. I couldn't go on. I had to replay it. It's that packed and good. I encourage you to resist moving immediately into the second and watch the first again. You'll thank me. This is going not be one of the best ever -- again!

CONFUSING BUT INTRESTING
bougiadaa9 September 2021
This kdrama is intresting at all , actors play soo good and the ost is catchy . The leading couple has a lot of chemistry and good enough moments together. Also there are some funny momnets and plot twist that i did not expect .

But you should has a litle patient and wait until some episodes to undrestand what is going on because there are some actors and actress that looks like the same and at the begining i was soo confused and bored but after that i liked it.

It is really an intresting idea for the kdramas and i totally recommend it to you.

Don't have any expectations
shanayax8 June 2020
Honestly, I had some sort of expectation for this considering it is written by the same person who wrote Mr.Sunshine. That drama was a masterpiece and class apart, but this? It was a big let down. First, the love story was the biggest downfall of this show, considering I love romance genres when written well. They fell in love, but there was no development for me to feel anything for them or for their characters and the chemistry is just not there. Second, I felt like most of the character arcs were horribly written. Some are there for no reason at all, especially Prime Minister Koo she was just unimportant and annoying during most of the show. Third, the excessive product placement felt like half of each episode was an advertisement and they make it so obvious it's cringe worthy to say the least. Fourth, the drama is only hyped by international fans who hype anything LMH is in, as well as dramas that have expensive budgets and good looking casts. The story only started to get a bit better after episode 11/12, which is sad because who wants to waste 11/12 hours to see if a drama is good or not? I know many people who dropped it during its initial episodes so at least they didn't waste their time, but I watched it for Woo do hwan as he is an amazing actor and outshines the male lead. Anyways, sad KES couldn't make something like MR.Sunshine and brought me a let down like this.
