There is life after SXSW, and it looks like a lot of movies waited until our attention wasn't drawn to the fest. Several films are opening this week, so you have plenty to choose from.

Watching the dramatic exploits of Dawson Leery and his pals back in the day, it seemed a no-brainer that Dawson himself - or, as he's known in the real world, James Van Der Beek - was destined to rise the highest in Hollywood. After all, he was the star of the show! It was named after him! (That said, I was always on Team Pacey.) But sometime during his post-"Dawson's Creek" career, after he snagged his first big role in the 1999 football flick Varsity Blues, Van Der Beek's career drifted off, little by little, into indie movie oblivion. Yes, he scored a prime role in the epic-on-paper Texas Rangers, but that became one of the biggest bombs of 2001. And then he played the lead in Roger Avary's racy Bret Easton Ellis adaptation The Rules of Attraction, a divisive film that earned its own solid cult following. But where,...

You know his face. In fact, he feels like that guy you run into at a reunion - one whose name is on the tip of your tongue, and for whom you feel a certain fondness, but whom you just can't place because he's grown up, lost the babyface, etc. Well, reintroduce yourself to James Van Der Beek (aka Dawson Leery), who this week proves a convincing leading man in a decidedly grown-up, smart, political thriller. Formosa Betrayed is the feature directing debut of cinematographer Adam Kane, and the brainchild of Will Tiao. Tiao, the Taiwanese-American son of political dissidents, had a story to tell, one inspired by the politically-motivated (and government-backed?) assassinations of his parents' peers in the '70s and '80s. Van Der Beek plays Jack Kelly, an FBI agent dispatched overseas to investigate the suspects and their potentially complex motivations. Because of the time period,...

I did not get my picture taken with James Van Der Beek.
That probably needs some context, so let me back up. Last week, word came down that James Van Der Beek would be stopping into the MTV Newsroom for an interview. He has a new film coming out called "Formosa Betrayed" and was just introduced as a character on the NBC medical drama "Mercy," and MTV News pop writer Jocelyn Vena would be sitting down with him for a few minutes on Monday morning.
I immediately got excited, because I'm a gigantic fan of "Dawson's Creek," and have always thought of Van Der Beek as the most underrated of all the '90s teen heartthrobs (mostly for his many TV guest spots, as well as his performance in "The Rules of Attraction"). Even though I wasn't conducting the interview, I wanted to sit in on it and snap a few photos.

James Van Der Beek is still best known for portraying the lovestruck Dawson Leery on "Dawson's Creek," but since graduating from that show he's taken on much darker roles. He's played a jaded drug dealer in "The Rules of Attraction," a dissociative serial killer on "Criminal Minds" and a cocaine-addled film director on "One Tree Hill." In his new movie, "Formosa Betrayed," he plays an FBI agent on an international hunt for the truth.
"Formosa," which comes out February 26, follows Jake Kelly (Van Der Beek) as he looks into the murder of a Taiwanese-American professor on U.S. soil. The investigation eventually brings Kelly to the victim's homeland, where he is given a crash course in Taiwan's tangled political history. As the search for the killer deepens,...

Screen Media Films has acquired worldwide rights to Adam Kane's political thriller "Formosa Betrayed," starring James Van Der Beek.
Van Der Beek plays an FBI agent, investigating the murder of an Asian professor, who pursues the man's killers to Taiwan. Wendy Crewson, John Heard, Tzi Ma, Will Tiao, Leslie Hope and Kenneth Tsang round out the cast.
The film, which picked up awards at the San Diego Film Festival and the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, is the first project from newly formed production/finance company Formosa Films, founded by Will Tiao.
"Betrayed," which debuted at the Montreal World Film Festival, will be released in 15-20 North American cities in February.
Screen Media will rep worldwide rights and begin selling territories at the European Film Market in February. The deal was brokered by the Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group, attorney Kevin Mills and Screen Media president Robert Baruc and vp international Michael Dwyer.
