For some fans of genre storytelling, 2024 has been a bit of a disappointing year. The Boys season 4 didn't over with fans quite as well as past installments, the House of the Dragon showrunners are feuding publicly with George R.R. Martin, and the latest Star Wars content from Disney+ — The Acolyte — was extremely divisive among fans. Since these were some of the most highly anticipated and high-budget genre series of the year, it has left many fans of genre storytelling feeling a bit morose. There have been bright spots: the historical fiction series Shogun crushed it at the Emmy’s and I personally am really enjoying the return of The Legend of Vox Machina. But whether because of last year’s acting and writer’s strikes or because new seasons of shows are taking longer than ever to reach our screens, 2024 is definitely not the year that it could have been.

It's only been a month since the season 2 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power ran on Amazon Prime Video, and the studio has yet to announce a renewal for season 3. True, a month and change isn't that long to wait, but shows like this to time to rev up. If you want to get new episodes out to fans in anything close to resembling a timely manner, you have to start checking into locations and extras and horses and stuff pretty early on.
With reports that ratings for season 2 may not have been as strong as for season 1, some fans worry that the show is in trouble. At the very least, showrunner J.D. Payne recently said on the Rings and Realms podcast that, "We're writing season 3." So that's something.

Earlier this month, we learned that HBO is in very early development on a Game of Thrones movie. This news came via The Hollywood Reporter, who had discovered that the studio is quietly working on a film. A of right now, we don't have a writer, director, or plot outline; the literal only thing we know about the Game of Thrones movie is that HBO is in the very early stages of making it. And considering how many Thrones spinoffs the studio has tinkered with over the years, there's no guarantee it'll actually get made or that we'll even learn anymore about it.
But perhaps that's a bit too pessimistic. We've speculated a fair amount about what a Game of Thrones movie might be about, because we know so little about it that we can get fully into theory mode. But it's possible there's another piece to this puzzle that's...

“Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking” has been acquired by Prime Video for the U.K.
The show, which features pairs of bakers whipping up magical Potter-inspired creations in a competition format, is set to air in the U.S. on Food Network and Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform Max from Nov. 14. New episodes will drop weekly.
It will be available on Prime Video in the U.K. from December, with an exact transmission date still being kept under wraps.
Internationally, “Wizards of Baking” will be on Max in territories where the streamer is available.
However, with Max not yet available in the U.K., in part due to Wbd’s longrunning and lucrative output deal with Comcast-owned broadcaster Sky, it seemed likely the show would land on Sky and its streaming platform Now.
Currently all Wbd “Harry Potter” content is available on Now, including all eight feature films and two unscripted series,...

For seven consecutive weeks, Max/HBO’s “The Penguin” has ruled the streaming chart, much in the way its titular character hopes to reign over the crime underworld of Gotham City. No one and nothing, ranging from diplomats to lawyers, from Halloween horrors to Martha Stewart, could unseat the show this week on Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap Report.
With one more episode to go, it’s highly likely “The Penguin” will make it a clean eight-week sweep atop the chart – and possibly extend its tenure beyond new episodes, as we saw with “House of the Dragon” over the summer.
Let’s look at the challengers who may hope to hold the crown once “The Penguin’s” season ends.
In second this week is “Don’t Move,” the Netflix horror film that likely got a Halloween-time bump in ratings. At No. 3 is another gangster story, albeit one a bit lighter in tone,...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe came back in a big way in 2024, and after complaints that superhero fatigue was tanking the world’s highest-grossing franchise, it seems all we needed was a bit of camp to bring things back around. Despite the lauded legacy of Jac Schaeffer’s WandaVision, the idea of focusing an entire spinoff on Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness seemed like a gamble. Boasting a diverse cast of LGBTQ+ actors and promises from Aubrey Plaza (Aubrey Plaza) that it would be a "gay explosion" meant that fans had to deal with the usual cries that the MCU has gone ‘woke.’
Thankfully, while The Marvels felt the wrath of those unable to handle a movie led by women, Agatha All Along has defied expectations. From debuting one of the most important gay characters from Marvel Comics to giving us the MCU’s first lesbian kiss, Agatha All Along did...

There’s only a select few companies that have consistently reached profitability in their direct-to-consumer segments. Netflix of course founded the club, Hulu has been a long-time member, and Disney and Disney+ recently joined. Warner Bros. Discovery though has been a prospective member, reaching profitability before but also falling back out of it since. Wbd and Max now though look like they’re on the right track.
Warner Bros. Discovery on Thursday, November 7 reported adjusted earnings of $289 million in its Dtc division, up from $111 million in the same quarter a year prior. It added 7 million net streaming subscribers in the quarter to reach 110 million globally.
Granted, almost all of those streaming adds came internationally, and just a few thousand domestically. But Wbd and Max aired the Olympics overseas this past quarter, and it has the Paris Games and the 215 million cumulative views across Wbd’s platforms to thank for that subscriber growth.

Zaslav has been banging the consolidation drum for some time, and thinks the election results could allow for more.
While the reactions to the election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States have varied across the country, they have been far more positive from media executives. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is cautiously optimistic about the impact that Trump’s second term could have on the industry. Zaslav had the chance to speak during the company’s conference call regarding its third-quarter earnings report on Thursday and shared his thoughts on how the election of Trump could aid in the furthering of one of his most cherished goals: the consolidation of big media and entertainment companies.
Key Details: Zaslav says the results of the election could create a “pace of change” for media consolidation.

Warner Bros. Discovery reported its third-quarter 2024 earnings results Thursday. The July 1-Sept. 30 period concluded with Wbd’s HBO, Max and Discovery+ boasting more than 110 million global subscribers, while box office sales fell 40% when compared to last summer’s blockbuster “Barbie.”
Direct-to-consumer sales rose 9% to $2.6 billion. Distribution was up 8%, ad sales 51% and content down 11% during the quarter, which saw Warner Bros. Discovery air the second season of “House of the Dragon,” as well as Olympics programming across international territories and Discovery’s “Shark Week” programming block.
During a call with investors later Thursday, Wbd CEO David Zaslav says the company expects to “meaningfully exceed” its goal of $1 billion in streaming profit in 2025. The Legacy Of Helaena Targaryen’s Prophecies In House Of The Dragon (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Alright, dragon fans, here’s the scoop: House of the Dragon throws us a major curveball with Helaena Targaryen. Unlike in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, where she’s a low-key character, the show turned her into a full-blown dreamer. Yep, Helaena—played by Phia Saban—isn’t just the Queen and sister of Aegon II who loves her insects and riddles; she’s now the one dropping prophetic bombs left and right, and most people aren’t even catching on.
Helaena might seem like she’s mumbling nonsense while she plays with bugs, but listen closely—her words are like a Targaryen crystal ball. In House of the Dragon, her “riddles” are spot-on predictions hinting at what’s coming. She’s not just there for quirky commentary; she’s giving fans all the secret spoilers.

It's official...well, it's kind of official: HBO is developing a Game of Thrones movie. Is it a prequel? A sequel? Is it going to happen at all? We don't know the answers to any of those questions for sure, but now that the report is out there, we're gonna talk about it. What do we want out of a Game of Thrones movie? What don't we want? What characters or historical events from author George R.R. Martin's invented history should be featured? We talk about it all on a new episode of Take the Black, our weekly podcast. Watch below!

Young actor Harry Collett is best known for his work on House of the Dragon, where he plays Jacaerys Velaryon, aka Jace. Jace had a frustrating time in the show's second season. He has his own dragon, Vermax, that he can ride, but as the son of future queen Rhaenyra Targaryen he was discouraged from riding it lest a political rival shoot him out of the sky. His mother burdened him with the knowledge of a prophecy which every Targaryen ruler must work to fulfill, and he feels his birthright is threatened by a bunch of a new peasant dragon-riders who are putting their feet up on tables and using the flatware wrong and generally classing down the place.
How do you relax in a situation like that? Sometimes you need to let it all hang out. This is all a very tortured segue into telling you that Harry Collett...

Yeah. There is a theory where you are se*ually attracted to your mother. There is even a term for that called “Oedipus Complex,” and what Matt Reeves said about Colin Farrell’s The Penguin might just prove our theory.

Sigmund Freud gave a banger of a theory, and there is an equally weird tale associated with this complex. But, for all we know, the Penguin might just be attracted to his mother in the TV series, and Matt Reeves might have just confirmed it.
Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobb Is a Mama’s Boy
Not in any weird way but throughout the series, a heavy emphasis on Francis Cobb (Oswald Cobb’s mother) has been given. The actress has been shown in the spotlight several times and has become a crucial plot point in the 7 episodes that have aired.

Matt Smith may currently be well-known for his portrayal of Daemon Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, but viewers will forever see him as synonymous with his portrayal of the Doctor on Doctor Who.
Smith portrayed the Eleventh Doctor for three seasons, making just shy of 50 episodes. Alongside David Tennant, his seasons are widely regarded as the golden age of the 'New Who' era of the franchise. Fans are always campaigning for his triumphant return, although Smith himself isn't too interested in reprising his beloved role just yet.
Of course, Smith would go on to grow his illustrious filmography. Notably, he played the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, in Netflix's The Crown. Other big roles include Last Night in Soho and a Marvel debut in Morbius. However, outside of Doctor Who, his biggest role by far is playing Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon.

There’s some exciting buzz for all Game of Thrones, and George R.R. Martin fans out there. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. might create a new movie set in the Game of Thrones universe. Nothing’s official yet; Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed a thing, and Deadline has no details on who’s involved creatively or how closely it might connect to the hit HBO series. But, fingers crossed, we might get another adventure in Westeros.
Game of Thrones was a massive hit for HBO, capturing audiences worldwide. Initially, the showrunners behind the series had plans to wrap up the story with a trilogy of movies, giving the franchise a big-screen sendoff. But HBO wasn’t on board—they preferred to bring it all to a close with a final season instead. Even George R.R. Martin was interested...

Back in August, we wrote about TikTok‘s then-newly-launched Spotlight feature, a suite of tools that was designed for film and TV studios to tap into its user base and encourage sales of things like tickets and streaming service subscriptions. It tested elements of Spotlight with Dune: Part Two and House of the Dragon, but now, thanks to Sony‘s third Venom film, The Last Dance, we have a concrete example of Spotlight in action–and it just set a new record for TikTok.
To promote The Last Dance, Sony’s marketing team decided to run with Marvel fans’ appetite for easter eggs. It set up a Spotlight campaign where people who commented specific words on videos posted by the official @venommovie account would unlock unique animations. Comment “Venom,” for example, and a little animated Venom head would pop up in the center of the app screen with one of...

Television shows have a different feel to them than movies. Their unique rhythm of storytelling over several seasons creates a sense of familiarity for the audience. Viewers gradually connect with the story and characters on a deeper level, which is not possible in the compressed manner of film narration. This is especially due to the episodic format of narrative in TV shows. Some shows have nailed this narrative format and brought forth some of the best episodes of television history.

The other day, it was revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery, the company that owns HBO, is developing a Game of Thrones movie. To be specific, they're in early development on one, and we can't be sure that the idea will ever see the light of day; they've developed other TV spinoffs only to shelve them in the past. Still, the notion of a Game of Thrones can't help but get the gears turning. What would that look like?
We know that HBO is developing a number of potential TV spinoffs to Game of Thrones, some of which seem closer to the starting line than others. For instance, they're we know they're developing a prequel show about Aegon the Conqueror, who brought together the Seven Kingdoms some 300 years before the events of the main show and became the first Targaryen king to sit the Iron Throne. His story would probably make a good movie,...

What lies ahead for our favorite Dceu characters? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
In 2024, DC Studios‘ significant shift got real. The Dceu, that massive world of superheroes we’ve known for years, took a turn as James Gunn and Peter Safran kicked off a new vision that promised something different, something ambitious. The path they’ve mapped out? A lineup of movies and TV shows. And it all starts with Superman in 2025.
Superman (2025) – A New Man of Steel
Forget another origin story. Gunn’s Superman, originally titled Superman: Legacy, took a bold route, diving right into the Man of Steel’s life as an established hero on Earth. Releasing July 11, 2025, this Superman, played by David Corenswet, is already a reporter at the Daily Planet, already knows Lois Lane (played by The Marvelous Mrs.
Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan), and yes, he’s already aware he’s an alien with powers that are pretty much unmatched.

When Kit Harington Revealed His All-Time Favorite Scene as Jon Snow—Here’s the Surprising Reason That Made It So Memorable! (Photo Credit – Facebook)
As Game of Thrones ramped up for its significant return, Kit Harington—our favorite brooding hero, Jon Snow—shared some surprising insights in a chat with Entertainment Weekly. While fans were all about the epic battles and intense moments, Harington revealed that his favorite scenes were the quiet ones, proving that small moments leave a lasting impact even in a realm filled with dragons and ice zombies.
When Game of Thrones premiered on April 14, Jon Snow and his fierce queen, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), arrived at Winterfell, gearing up for the epic showdown with the Army of the Dead. But it wasn’t all glitz and glam behind the scenes; the cast tackled a grueling 10-month filming schedule, facing some of the most challenging conditions the show had ever seen.

Martin Scorsese’s hate for superhero movies might’ve come from one DC sensation calling out his motto. Colin Farrell is currently the talk of Tinseltown, thanks to his makeover and performance as the Batman villain in Max’s The Penguin. Farrell once shared that he finds the Hollywood idea of “one for them, one for me” ridiculous.

Farrell has been one actor who always experimented with his role, regardless of the budget of the film. Farrell has been riding on a high recently with critically acclaimed roles in The Batman, Thirteen Lives, The Banshees of Inisherin, and most recently in The Penguin.

Based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula as well as an Irish legend, the upcoming vampire movie Feed has begun production ahead of the American Film Market next week, Deadline reports.
From director Marco van Belle (Mercy), the upcoming vampire movie Feed is being shot in Ireland. Fitting, given that the film is inspired by the Irish myth of the Dearg Due.
According to Wikipedia (linked above), “Dearg-due, an Irish name meaning ‘red bloodsucker,’ is a female demon that seduces men and then drains them of their blood.”
“The film follows a group of twenty something social media influencers who spend a weekend at a remote contemporary house in an Irish forest, and must fight for their lives when they awaken the world’s original vampire from her slumber.”
Grace Collender (Fréwaka) stars alongside Clinton Liberty, Daisy Jelley, Niamh Hogan, Rhys Mannion and Oskar Smith.

Last month, author Brandon Sanderson took to Reddit to discuss the problem with Hollywood adaptations of novels. Sanderson, the renowned fantasy and sci-fi author known best for the Mistborn series and The Stormlight Archive, shared a memory from early in his career when a studio optioned the rights to make one of his books — 2012's The Emperor's Soul — into a film.
According to Sanderson, the screenwriter who was assigned to the project had a good pedigree and appeared to be very enthusiastic about the whole thing. In fact, it turns out that he was the one who persuaded the production team to go for the option in the first place. Things appeared to be going swimmingly, setting The Emperor’s Soul up — in Sanderson’s mind, anyway — for an auspicious adaptation. However, things would eventually go downhill.
About a year after the story was optioned, Sanderson read the writer’s script.

The Winds of Winter: Which Key Game of Thrones Characters Are Likely to Survive George R.R. Martin’s Next Novel! (Photo Credit – Facebook)
George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga has always been a rollercoaster of shocking character deaths, leaving fans gripping their seats since day one. As we await The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in this epic saga, speculation about who will make it through the pages unscathed is hotter than a dragon’s breath. Over the past few years, we've seen several big screen franchises brought to television, whether it's the MCU, Star Wars, or even The Batman thanks to HBO's new mega-hit, The Penguin.
Now, it looks like Game of Thrones is going the other way by heading to theaters. The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) reveals that Warner Bros. is developing at least one feature set in the world created by author George R.R. Martin.
According to the trade, it's only in a very early stage of development and no director, writer, or actors are currently attached. However, the studio is eager to explore Westeros in on the big screen, a decision which has surely been influenced by a year that's seen them deliver box office disappointments like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Joker: Folie à Deux.

The clocks have gone back. Winter is coming. And that can only mean one thing. No, not Christmas — news from Westeros, of course! With prequel series House Of The Dragon proving a hit with fans and critics alike (even if not always Thrones author George R. R. Martin), and spin-off show A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms well on its way, stock in Game Of Thrones — five years after HBO's eight season fantasy epic concluded — has scarcely been higher. And now, as THR are reporting, it looks like A Song Of Ice And Fire may be about to be sung on the big screen at long last.
According to THR, "at least one" film set in Martin's world of dragons, politicking, warfare, and White Walkers is in development at Warner Bros. already. And whilst said development is very early stages, with no creatives attached in front of or behind the camera,...

House of the Dragon Almost Got Shelved—Here’s Why That Nearly-Disaster Led to Its Success! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Believe it or not, House of the Dragon almost failed. HBO was ready to cancel the Game of Thrones prequel before it started. Crazy, huh? The show is killing it today because of that near-miss.
HBO has many Game of Thrones spinoffs in the pipeline, but only sometimes. After Game of Thrones finished in 2019, the network took its time—maybe too long—releasing new content. They even spent $30 million on a prequel pilot called Blood Moon about the Long Night to cancel it. Talk about brutal.
But it wasn’t just Bloodmoon that faced the axe. According to co-showrunner Ryan Condal, House of the Dragon was also close to being shelved. Condal revealed, “HBO was going to shelve it” until George R.R. Martin stepped in. This was the story Martin wanted to tell most,...

Deadline reports that Eve Ridley, who recently gained recognition in Netflix’s The Three-Body Problem, has been cast as Ruthye Marye Knoll in DC Studios’ upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
This role marks a major career leap for Ridley, whose standout performance in the Netflix series has already drawn industry attention. In this adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic, Ridley’s character Ruthye embarks on an interstellar quest for revenge, teaming up with Supergirl to avenge her father’s murder at the hands of the villain Krem, played by Matthias Schoenaerts.
Starring opposite Ridley, Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) takes on the role of Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, in what promises to be an exciting addition to the Dcu lineup. Craig Gillespie (Cruella) is set to direct, with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries), setting the stage for a bold new chapter in the Supergirl story.

A 'Game of Thrones' movie is in the works.Warner Bros. have reportedly been quietly developing at least one film set in the fantasy universe created by author George R.R. Martin. However, sources told The Hollywood Reporter the project is in "very early stage" development and currently has no filmmaker, cast or writer attached but the studio are keen to explore the idea of bringing the saga to the big screen.'Game of Thrones' showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss famously wanted to conclude the series - which aired on HBO for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019 - with three feature films instead of its final six-episode run, and George himself was keen on the idea of a movie. He told The Hollywood Reporter in 2014: "It might need a feature to tie things up. Something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big,...

Another return to Westeros is being planned, but this time Warner Bros wants a Game Of Thrones movie. More here.
HBO’s Game Of Thrones came so very close to being the peak show of the peak TV era. Boasting more must-see moments than any of its rivals, for years the fantasy saga was an unrelenting tractor beam, constantly drawing in new audiences as the buzziest show on television.
While the signs were there beforehand, it was of course that final season that was the undoing of Game Of Thrones however, with a series of baffling story decisions and lack of narrative logic seriously denting the show’s reputation. HBO’s prequel spin-off House Of The Dragon has its admirers but hasn’t really been able to rebuild the fervour around the Seven Kingdoms that once existed when Game Of Thrones was at its all-conquering peak.
Perhaps that’s why...

Warner Bros. is stirring up the excitement by starting work on a “Game of Thrones” movie. This development was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and it’s causing quite the buzz among us fans. The idea of seeing George R.R. Martin’s world of Westeros in movie theaters is something many of us have been dreaming about.
Right now, the movie is in the very early stages. There’s no writer, cast, or filmmaker linked to the project yet, but that hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm.
The thought of Westeros on the big screen is a big deal, especially since the original creators of the “Game of Thrones” series, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, once expressed a desire to wrap up the saga with movies instead of the 2019 series finale.
The landscape of films and TV has been evolving. Nowadays, it’s not strange to see movie characters jump...

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio that owns HBO, has been quietly developing a Game of Thrones movie. There's no cast, there's no writer, there's no director. We don't know what the movie would be about. Maybe it would be a prequel, like the TV shows House of the Dragon or the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Maybe it would be a sequel, like the Jon Snow show that got developed and then dropped. It's possible that Wbd will develop this idea in the background only to drop it without it ever coming to anything; keep in mind that they're not announcing this movie, THR just dug up this info.
So we don't know much about this movie except that the idea for it exists, and that it's being worked on at some level. Back when the original Game of Thrones show was wrapping up,...

HBO's megahit series "Game of Thrones" was so successful that there's been a nonstop churn of spinoffs in development ever since it ended. Now, though, something different is stirring: a "Game of Thrones" movie. According to the Hollywood Reporter, HBO has been "quietly developing at least one film" set in the historical fantasy world created by author George R.R. Martin. There are currently no writers, directors, or cast members attached to the project(s), nor any specifics about the story, but there's certainly no shortage of source material.
This isn't the first time the possibility of movies has been floated. Martin said in 2014 that ideas like a big screen conclusion for "Game of Thrones" were being "actively discussed," and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wanted to wrap up the series with a movie trilogy.
HBO's parent company is Warner Bros. Discovery, which has become focused on straddling its franchises across film and television.
