In a 2019 interview with Collider, Charles Hood detailed how he got involved in the project: "They had a script already. A great script written by Paul Soter, who is one of the Broken Lizard guys. It was very Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). It's like an even darker version of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and as soon as I read it I was like 'This is awesome' and I went to go in and interview for it. I think Paul was originally gonna direct it but he had other obligations for another TV show he is on right now, and so I was just lucky enough to be able to hop onto this. We developed the script as much as we could in 2 weeks... It didn't really need much, and it was just some notes that came from Blumhouse, some notes that came from me, but really not much. It was in great shape."
