Just dark enough

Warning: Spoilers
Overall a good series, true life murders are always more spooky than fiction.

Filmed well and very good mid 80's England set direction come together to present that solid British murder mystery that is so engaging, several really good performances, Freddie Fox makes a great villain, plus Mark Addy & Gemma Whelan came through shining as usual.

A harrowing real life story brought to life.
Sleepin_Dragon12 March 2020
The events at White House Farm were well documented, and notorious, who on Earth would have wanted to kill the five members of the family inside.

I would start by saying that six episodes is a stretch, it should have been done over four, it does lull a little in the middle. However it's dark, gritty and at times compelling drama.

There is a message up at the start saying that it has been dramatised, there are changes, but that's artistic license.

Freddie Fox is very good as Bamber, Mark Addy is the standout as Stan, he makes it. I adore Stephen Graham, but he is woeful in this, his accent is abysmal, at times he sounds ludicrous, why on Earth did they not cast Richard Harrington?

Ignore the ludicrous one star reviews, they obviously didn't bother watching it. 7/10.

Fascinating story.

Warning: Spoilers
Truth is sometimes much stranger than fiction. The brutality of this crime is hard to believe and the murder mystery element is like something from an Agatha Christie novel. The police made such a complete mess of the investigation that there is still doubt about their conclusions 36 years later.

Grizzy flashback from past.
gibbs-1817228 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Started to watch this as a 'something to do' as Netflix offered it up as a recommendation. As soon as i heard the name "Jeremy Bamber" even though i was 11 going on 12 i knew what was going to happen, i knew how it was going to end.

Its a slow burn that runs at a consistent pace which is good, nothing worse than those dramas that run slow then crash wholap in the last 30 minutes.

Great choice of actors, great idea never to have seen the 5 involved in the murders portrayed. I think that was a classy move especially as one of course was vilified for months in the British media as some crazy Drug fuelled psycho killer .

The end credits are rather sad and a marker on the police of the time that although you were right all along you trod on someones bigger toes.

I just can't get my head round how you could do that to your parents blood or not but some people eh.

This was huge then and is still big now for any American viewers because gun crime of this magnitude is so very very rare in the UK.

I enjoyed it, just sad thats it true.

Gripping!
dgjones-6225822 February 2021
The first thirty minutes are a bit slow, but it's a rollercoaster ride from then on. I intended to watch two episodes at a time but ended up watching this in one sitting - it's that good.

As others have mentioned, Steven Graham's welsh accent is as terrible as his character's dialogue, but that's the only negative comment I have. The rest of the cast are very good and Mr. Fox is quite chilling as Jeremy Bamber.

Well worth a watch.

Excellent drama
raiden_00215 February 2020
I watched this drama based on numerous recommendations, I wasn't familer with the crime myself. I found it thoroughly gripping, the acting is great and the cinematography is some of the best I've seen in a TV drama, it truly creates an atmosphere full of suspense. Unlike some of the reviewers, I didn't find this to be drawn out, I thought it were the perfect length to do justice to the story. I've since since done some research into the story and thought it was accurately portrayed and well told. This is one not to be missed.

Other reviews......... ????

Warning: Spoilers
Yes, it's 'based' on a true story Yes, a killer has been in jail refusing to admit guilt for 35 years Yes, several people died .......but seriously.......all the one star reviews smell of Jeremy Bamber advocates Nothing more and nothing less. It doesn't claim to be a true story since much is guess work but it doesn't deserve one star with the comments posted.

Excellent!
dwightet20 June 2020
Cannot, for the life of me, see why this would get any low ratings. Mark Addy and Stephen Graham are tremendous, the writing taut, the supporting acting way above par. Great storytelling, highly recommended.

I was aware of this case before I watched the show so knew what I was getting into. The research that went into this is insane. Im genuinely concerned about the 1/10 reviews. Is that you jeremy?

The father called the police first???
TheTruth2730 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's a real shame that all of 'the friends of Jeremy' are scoring this so low.

As for some people criticising the actors & the acting in it, these are some of the best actors in this country & they do a fine job.

An excellent portrayal of the case. Very good acting all round.

An earlier reviewer, 'ruleoflaw', claims that the father called the police first, after being shot in the face & before calling Jeremy Bamber.

Where is this 'easily found' evidence, exactly?

Oh no, that's right, it doesn't exist.

Good Series! Ignore The Delusional Inept Comments
zac-6827428 September 2020
Exceptional cast of actors. Storyline didn't drag as mentioned in comments; the writers and directors painted a detailed picture of an egotistical sociopathic murderer. Cinematography was great but missed the mark in London!

Superb True Life Crime.
jhmoondance21 January 2022
Well......I binge watched this fascinating gripping series of the Bamber family murders n I could not believe how affected I was. It was a truly horrifying crime that gladly was solved. Even though the outcome was known it was a very tense n suspenseful series. Truly shocking.

The acting was superb n the characters were brilliant n bounced off each other.

The ending was foregone but told empatheticaly. It was a justified end to a great series.

Frustrating
kavanaghrichie8 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting story but incredibly frustrating as the episodes play out. You just want to get to the finish line. Jeremy is clearly involved from early on but even with his careless attitude only a few can see through this for what it is. Stephen Graham's character could also be the most frustrating character on TV.

Frustrating.

Sad that Bamber fans are scoring this so low
tamfiorella30 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was well acted and a great crime story that I didn't know much about until I started researching after. The fact that people are scoring this low based on non existent evidence that they believe cleared him such as someone stating that the father called the police first (I can't find proof of that in any transcript) is unfair. No matter where you stand on the guilt of Bamber, this series was well done and very entertaining

Really Strong

I love mini-series based on real murder cases, and this is no different. The performances are all really strong. Freddie Fox reminded me of Rahim in The Serpent - brilliant!

Sound of axes grinding?
mysteryaction22 January 2020
A perfectly decent crime drama which clearly states that it's based on real events, it does not claim to be a forensic analysis of what actually happened. Those that are upset that it's 'not true' and are being highly critical do seem to have an axe to grind. The productions use of the landscape and the deserted house as a silent witness is both atmospheric and calming in the face of the alarming and overwrought lives of the characters. My only major gripe so far came in episode three with the ridiculous depiction of Witham railway station. It is farcical to portray it as some idyllic rural backwater out of the nineteen fifties when Witham is a large town on the Great Eastern intercity mainline. That did make me question the credibility of the producers.

Not nearly as poor as user reviews make out
Cheshire5519 January 2020
Like another reviewer, I suspect there's some criticism of this drama driven by personal views of the actual case and subsequent conviction. As a stand alone crime drama I think it's very watchable. The acting is really pretty good with the conflict between the Stephen Graham and Mark Addy characters being especially riveting. A mention for Gemma Whelan too...understated but believable. So, make up your own mind....episodes 1 and 2 kept me very engaged. Hope it maintains its standard.

Really intense
nezbitkn214 February 2020
Just feel this could've given a little more at the end in terms of where everyone was, had done and so on. Felt a little rushed. Regardless a good mini series to watch about a true horror of a crime.

Great script, acting; dark, dark story
stairways23 February 2021
(Based on) a true story, this 6-part retelling of a notorious multiple murder case features some terrific acting (Freddie Fox as the protagonist and possible sociopath) and Mark Addy as DS Stan Jones, one of the few to be convinced of the former's guilt rather than his sister who is widely blamed.

The mechanics of the story are brilliantly handled (especially given the well-known facts of the case) and a real sense of location and, indeed, foreboding is provided by some great 'atmosphere' shots of the landscape, farm implements and other objects that earth and populate this grim tale.

Dark territory, for sure, but really well handled and impossible to look away from. Highly recommended, but certainly not for the squeamish

An interesting true crime story, but did the telling really require 6 episodes? Dragged out for prime time advertising revenue. Less is more.

Far too slow
osbaba19 July 2021
The acting is good. But the script is just crawling. The incompetence of the cops would be unbelievable if it weren't a true story. This needed to have been a 2 part. At most a 3 part mini series.

Brilliant from episode 1 to 6
AlienRefugee28 February 2020
Freddie Fox does an absolutely amazing job as does Mark Addy. The whole cast are great. I'm a big fan of Stephen Graham but his Welsh accent is pretty terrible. That aside, it's a gripping series. It's also good to see so many actors from sitcoms doing great serious roles.
