A Sad Sorry Rip-Off of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
watcher10127 March 2020
That's all it is. Nothing but a sad attempt at copying Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but aimed at kids, and it fails terribly. Oh sure, there's a chuckle here and there, but it's overall poorly done, badly acted, and, like I said, it wants to be Fresh Prince so bad, and it falls way short of that goal. Even the opening theme is a rip-off.

I'm trying to support Tyler Perry more but I can't
worthycarl-665-57861422 March 2020
I believe in watching at least 3 episodes of a TV show before giving it a proper review.

This show is like a traditional Tyler Perry show and/or movie. Everything seems wholesome and cool, then boom, someone's on drugs. Yup, Dylan's mom "is a hippy now", according to the grandma, who abandoned Dylan for a month. I really thought Tyler would have went in a different direction since this is a kid's show (not a family show), but someone HAS to be on drugs in his projects.

As far as the actors, the adults are fine, the kids...not so much. Yes, they're kids but they're a bunch a good kid actors from previous years. Dylan's pretty good as an actor, the daughter tries too hard with her acting and the son isn't very good but I do see him improving each episode

The Chicago representation; I hate it and am offended by it. Dylan's from the streets of Chicago and all he speaks is slang. A lot of that "slang" he says is not even from Chicago. "Dawg, dial up, sauce (referring to alcohol), etc." isn't from Chicago. Chicago's knew for "on foe nem, instantly, thot, merch" but of course, Tyler hasn't even talked to Chicago people to know. And Dylan's just a disrespectful character in the show and I really don't like it. Am I happy Nickelodeon has a new black show? Yes but Dylan's more disrespectful than helpful when it comes to having life lessons at the end of each episode. Plus, I'm from Chicago and Tyler Perry makes it seems like this dangerous place and he shouldn't do that

The show is rated TV-G but some dialogue is more suggestive for its rating. A TV-PG rating would be better but Nick is known for rating stuff wrong. Most of Dan Schneider's work should've been TV-PG D honestly. So yeah. The show's not terrible but it's cringy at times and doesn't teach the right messages kids should learn. Episode 4 was about not snitching. And most of the show is just Dylan not respecting his Uncle and Aunt's rules. I've watched 4 episodes and really don't wanna watch anymore.

Didn't like it...but really wanted too

Warning: Spoilers
This show was a big disappointment. The bad jokes and bad acting were almost cringe-worthy. Dylan just comes off as over the top like he's trying too hard. And the parents are kind of stiff. Some of the bad dynamics between the actors is due to the writing. The mom and dad are still black even if they live in the suburbs -it is ridiculous that they were so clueless about some of the language Dylan used. There was space here to give a fresh take on this situation (which is clearly a reinvention of The Fresh Prince) but they missed the mark. I hope they can turn it around and give the actors something better to work with. The grand mom was a bright spot.

Also, I am just taking note that Tyler Perry loves to rely on the trope of the black woman so strung out she can't take care of her kids. It's here again lingering in the background with Dylan's mom. It's tired.

A mess.
lexee-139935 March 2020
After watching the first episode, it's obvious that Tyler Perry doesn't care about creating well written content and just threw something together. The show has horrible dialogue and chemistry. The actors try too hard to be funny especially the actor who plays the main character Dylan. He tries too hard to be urban in which causes his character to be annoying and unrealistic.

It is "unwatchable"
seanbamford7 March 2020
My 9 year old son watched 5 minutes of this show and said " this is not good, I am going to bed." My son liked some pretty mediocre Nickelodeon shows, but this show is unwatchable. Think "Fresh Prince," but with weaker scripts. It is clear that many of the actors are acting, which is not a good sign, but I blame the scripts, not the actors.

This is terrible.
timeofourlife20123 March 2020
This has to be one of THE worst shows I've ever seen. The actor who plays "Young Dylan" comes off as obnoxious and not funny at all. He literally gets on my nerves, and this show has no appeal for younger kids, either. They didn't care for it and they didn't like Dylan the actor. Should have done better casting.

Awful Show
PopcornSugar339 March 2020
Can Nickelodeon greenlit better black sitcoms. This is just as bad as that horrible Cousins For Life that came out last year. It's unfunny, the lead kid who plays Dylan is obnoxious and unlikable, the acting is terrible, it's boring, production value feels cheap and low budget. And the plot is unoriginal. Really Tyler Perry? Ripping off Fresh Prince of Bel Air. This kid is no Will Smith. Get this trash off the air!

Warning: Spoilers
All characters are terrible at ACTING on this tv show!!! Not only that but the little boy is such a wannabe hardcore kid, he talks all tough and disrespectful he claims that he came from the "hard" streets of Chicago like really? He seems like he should be a shy quiet kid who was raised in the suburbs and is very well liked...well in this show he extremely UNLIKEABLE and DISRESPECTFUL... Tyler Perry could've done better because by his is terrible all the way around.... He's a kid who's mom didn't want him so grandma ended up with him and now she basically don't want him and she trying to leave him with her son and his children because grandma thinks he needs to be with his cousins.... then one if his cousins in like 10 with a dang imaginary friend..... his sister thinks he is crazy and blah blah.... but yeah Dylan is just straight rude and disrespectful when he is speaking with adults and his cousins they try to make it seem like he needs guidance but in reality needs better acting lessons apparently Nick really didn't want him unless Tyler Perry signed him.....welp that didn't go to well either because the kid is horrible I haven't like me him since he started rapping on nick for Christmas I see Nick cut that short because I saw the song about 10 times out of the Christmas season...it's bad when your own children don't like the show

Unfunny garbage
careybrandon-411445 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I already could've told you by the trailers that this show was going to be horrible, and like I expected, it's everything you would expect in a 2020 Nickelodeon show. The only way this show is popular is because they have guest stars like Dj Khaled.

Could not make it through episode
caramelfantasy_247 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Sloppy writing and bad acting. The little girl with the smack talking and eye rolls was just to much. Dylan is sitting at the table with her brother but they do not know who he is?? How! The last time they saw him was 4yrs ago according to the grandma.why would the little boy and girl not remember him. I thought I was being over critical but my 9yr old pointed that one out.

YOUNG SHELDON...... I'd Rather watch Young Sheldon
mls1113923 April 2020
That's how bad this show is I'd rather watch Young Sheldon LOL

or Romeo! show on Nickelodeon Romeo Miller was a hip-hop kid too, he was a little disrespectful in the 1st few episodes, but matured later on in the series. I think Young Dylan will never be respectful and will always be a bad influence

Boring, annoying, unfunny, and a waste of time to watch.
anthonymichael-9358523 January 2022
Like a lot of other sitcoms that Nickelodeon has been showing for years, Young Dylan is boring, annoying, unfunny, and a waste of time to watch. This show constantly overuses the laugh track for every time someone speaks, but it is never necessary because the show is never funny. That makes the show no different than That Girl Lay Lay and Danger Force.

Absolute Snoozefest!
zambianpride20 May 2020
I watched the pilot episode of this show to see what Nickelodeon has been up to lately but I can tell you they do not make shows like they used to.

The characters are dry and boring, there's not much to them. You have the two forgettable parents, the stereotypical sassy black girl, the boy who has an imaginary friend and the grandma, who I think they tried to make funny but isn't . I've forgotten all their names already apart from Dylan (and that's just because he's the titular character). It's clear Nickelodeon doesn't make shows like they used to because this show is so boring and full of dead space. The pace of the show is soo slow, longest half hour of my life. It's literally the characters just in the house, just talking all day and improperly placed/overused laugh tracks mostly because every joke made is unfunny. I'm not one to hate laugh tracks that much but in this show it's borderline obnoxious. The plot is also very mundane. Dylan randomly appears at the (whatever their last name is') house after his mother disappears and it takes them 30 mins to portray that plot point when it literally could've been done in the first 5 mins and the episode could've been over. There's nothing much to this episode other than Young Dylan appearing at the house. The acting is also very sub-par. They actors don't make the show feel real or believable. It seems staged and actors are supposed to make things feel real but they fail at this. The kid with the imaginary friend, has really bad and awkward line delivery and often switches off after giving his lines and sits there with a blank expression on his face. Tyler Perry must've recruited some average Joes when casting for this show because the acting is what you would expect to see from a high school film class.

.............. im sick too my stomach
montjaskie12 April 2020
WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN ?? There is so much wrong with this show there is no 0 rating..... well im forced to give it a 1-star

on Wikipedia They're calling this an "AMERICAN COMEDY" series, where's the comedy because i WASN'T laughing, i mostly fell asleep ZZZZZZZZZZZ........

1. The Dialogue is trash

2. The acting is terribly atrocious

3. Dylan himself is trying WAYYY to hard to be cool

4. Zurry's acting is the worst, POOR ZURRY i hope he doesnt see this review. Zurry the kid in the 3rd episode

5. the Laugh tracks......WHY the laugh tracks this $#*T is not funny

What HAPPENED to Nickelodeon it used to be so awesome between the mid 80's until like 2005, shows like The Secret World of Alex Mack, ALL THAT, Double Dare, GUTS, My Brother & Me, Kenan & Kel, Pete & Pete, Hey Arnold, KaBLAM!, Brother's Garcia Rocket Power, Danny Phantom, Oh Yeah! Cartoons , Drake & JOSH, Ned's Declassified.......... HECK even Cousin Skeeter and Eddie McDowd, they werent the best, but i'll take Skeeter and Eddie McDowd ANY day over Young Dylan

Nickelodeon used to be fun, interesting, ZANY, wacky, and diverse. Now its not even trying, it just shows endless Sponge BOB and Loud House with a buncha new trash teen sitcoms that use slang and talk that you'll probably find on Urban Dictionary.

I don't recommend watching this show not unless you want to watch something that'll make you go to sleep or laugh at how bad it is ........ ]

Terrible
russellmnr26 April 2020
The main character isn't funny and the dialogue is awful. None of the actors know what their doing and can't act. It's just the right amount of bad to be unwatchable without being so bad it's good. Please take this show off the air.

Lackluster
musicnetwork-850332 March 2020
Maybe certain kids will like it or people who are very easily entertained. Found it not entertaining at all. Lots of fake audience laughter after nearly every line, but nothing is actually funny at all. I mostly enjoyed the first few seasons of House of Payne. Since then, most of Tyler Perry's stuff has been a miss for me. Adding this one to the list of ones to miss.

Typical Tyler Perry money product full of stereotypes
sumtim3s00n14 June 2021
Just another out of the factory of Tyler Perry products where he just either copies another show or throws together some generic storylines and changes a few names here and there and calls it a day. This guy should be banned from Hollywood or anywhere really because he is making everyone else look bad.

Pathetic and unwatchable.

I enjoyed the show Young Dylan, it was a "GREAT and FUNNY SHOW"..to tske it off was a BIG A BIG SHAME they need to put young Dylan back on Nickelodeon instead of young Sheldon which would be to me a boring show and a sad duplicate to Young Dylan. Has Potential
kaydenwr17 June 2020
In Series 1 the show takes a slow start but picks up later in the series, the show is based on Young Dylan (actor) people seem to not understand that and think it is a show teaching children about "streets" and how to act wrong when the show is very light hearted and a good watch if you are a teen or above. The jokes are very clearly targeted towards older (13+) audiences and reminds me of old shows such as Kenan and Kel and The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and i would love to see what comes from it in the future.
