The Casting Society celebrates its 40-year anniversary this year just as the entertainment industry is marking the diversity and authenticity in the many roles in film and TV from “Coda” and “West Side Story” to “Bridgerton.”
In honor of this landmark, the society’s leaders hoped to organize an in-person ceremony for the Artios Awards, their annual event honoring work by casting directors across film, television and theater. But when the Omicron surge showed the pandemic isn’t close to being over, CSA leadership realized it needed to pivot to a remote ceremony.
“Our hope and desire was that we would be able to do this spectacular in-person celebration,” says Kim Williams, the vice president of casting at Disney Television Studios and the president of CSA. “But we decided for the health and safety of everybody it would be better to pivot to a virtual celebration, and we’ll celebrate the culmination of our 40th,...

Nickelodeon and Bet got choice spots as ViacomCBS held its first remote upfronts event today with the usual array of inside mocking from Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah and James Corden.
The kids network and African American-focused network got standalone presentations at the event, which was streamed to advertisers and featured a slew of the company’s talent including an Imagine-esque singalong, although there was little attention on layoff-hit nets such as Comedy Central.
The company touted Nickelodeon shows such as Are You Afraid of the Dark?, which is coming back for a second season, Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, The Crystal Maze and Danger Force, while also highlighting upcoming titles such as SpongeBob Squarepants spin-off Kamp Koral, Baby Shark’s Big Show, a Star Trek animated series, Imagine Kids + Family drama The Astronauts and the return of The Rugrats.

Gravitas Ventures has secured the North American distribution rights to Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story, a feature docu directed by Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood. It premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and will release in theaters and on-demand sometime in August. The doc offers a behind-the-scenes look at popular the 90’s cartoon which we to broke cable ratings and amassed an extensive fan base. Creator John Kricfalusi was celebrated as a visionary, but even though his personality suffused the show, dozens of artists and network executives were just as responsible for the show’s meteoric rise. As Kricfalusi’s worst impulses were let loose at the workplace and new allegations about even more disturbing behavior have surfaced, his reputation now threatens to taint the show forever. Tony Piantedosi, Vice President of Acquisitions at Gravitas, negotiated the deal with Matt Burke at Submarine.
