Ten years strong, Legendary’s Monsterverse is now an expansive story universe of cross-platform experiences, and in the wake of the massive box office success of this year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, a sixth installment in the saga has been officially confirmed!
The Hollywood Reporter tells us this afternoon that Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is writing the upcoming sixth movie in the Monsterverse franchise.
THR notes in their exclusive report, “Callaham knows a thing or two about Godzilla. The scribe wrote the early drafts and received story by credit for 2014’s Godzilla, the movie that kicked off Legendary’s monster mania.” No word yet on who will be directing the upcoming sixth movie.
We also have no idea if it’ll be a follow-up to Adam Wingard’s movies Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong, or if it will take...

Wyatt Russell has not been shy when talking about his great experience working with his father, legendary actor Kurt Russell, on the Apple TV+ drama “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” But one question he’s frequently asked doesn’t have a satisfying answer.
“Normally, I’m asked, ‘What did you learn from your dad?’ And the answer to that is, ‘nothing,’ because I grew up with him,” Wyatt tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. But ask Wyatt what insights he gleaned from working with Kurt on the show to build the character Lee Shaw – the army veteran at the center of a decades-spanning mystery within the MonsterVerse franchise universe – and that’s a different story.

Even now, months after she wrapped production on Season 1 of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” breakout star Mari Yamamoto gets admittedly emotional while talking about the show’s finale.
The actress plays Keiko Mura, a Japanese scientist who, in the 1950s, helped start the organization Monarch alongside Bill Randa (Anders Holm) and Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) to understand and study Godzilla and other Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs). But after a mission gone wrong, Keiko is presumed dead and is only later discovered to have survived, barely aged for decades, within a part of Hollow Earth she’s coined Axis Mundi. It’s there, in the show’s finale, where Keiko reunites with an elder Lee and realizes that her 57 days spent in Axis Mundi have translated to literal decades on Earth.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the packed limited series race, which has seen three new contenders premiere in the last three weeks.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back to what is arguably the most competitive Emmys category this year: limited series. It feels like as good a time as any to return to my favorite race – particularly with “Shōgun” and Anna Sawai dominating the discourse, as well as the premiere of our dark horse favorite “Under the Bridge.” We talked about both shows this week with our voices, and I must say, it feels heartening — dare I type, Siri pay “Vindicated” – to have been so right about “Shōgun.” We both loved that show way back in February and the response has been off the charts.

We all know that Kurt Russell is a true acting legend. The legendary actor made a name for himself as Dexter Riley in films such as The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), Now You See Him, Now You Don’t (1972), and The Strongest Man in the World (1975), and later continued the success by starring in John Carpenter’s films as hero-turned-robber Snake Plissken in Escape from New York (1981), its sequel Escape from L.A. (1996), the horror film The Thing (1982), and the kung-fu comedy action film Big Trouble in Little China (1986). And while this is just a fraction of Russell’s amazing roles, it is a good indication of how big of a star he was in the 1970s and 1980s.
But, another member of his family, his son Wyatt Russell, is also becoming a popular acting name since his appearance as John Walker / U.S. Agent in the The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) series.

Hollywood star Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell starred in the Monsterverse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The father-son duo portrayed different phases of the character Lee Shaw, a former U.S. Army colonel entangled in monster investigations. While the 73-year-old actor portrayed the elder Lee Shaw, the Overlord actor embodied the character in his younger years.

While playing the same character at different ages as his real-life son Wyatt Russell in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Kurt Russell admitted after watching Wyatt at work that he realized just how good of a performance his son was delivering, and he’d better bring his own A-game to match it.
Russell was joined on Deadline’s Contenders Television panel by VFX supervisor Sean Konrad and composer Leopold Ross to discuss the Apple TV+ and Legendary Television series – a prequel to the big-screen Monsterverse movies featuring Godzilla and King Kong. He said had the chance to take a good, long look at Wyatt’s acting chops while the two were shooting on parallel schedules.

It’s official: Godzilla business is booming. Godzilla Minus One just won an Oscar, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is ruling the box office right now – and on top of that, there’s plenty more small-screen Godzilla goodness to come from the MonsterVerse in another season of Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters. The Apple TV+ drama, which streamed from the end of 2023, told a timeline-hopping tale of in-universe agency Monarch, which featured several appearances from Big G himself. Evidently, the show was a hit – because not only is there more Monarch on the way, but other connected series are being developed too.
For now, details are scarce – it’s unknown if the second season of Monarch will continue the story of the Randa family across the generations, or if it’ll drum up a new human cast. And while you’d expect more appearances from Godzilla, expect much speculation over the kaiju roster too.

With multiple Godzilla movies and T.V. shows dropping this year, it might be tricky for fans to track them all. Here is a guide that can help! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
On November 3, 2023, Toho Studios released what many consider to be one of the best Godzilla films in recent times — “Godzilla Minus One.” Then, Legendary Pictures came out with their first live-action series featuring the not-so-gentle giant in “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” on November 17, 2023. They had also recently created an animated series based on King Kong called “Skull Island” on June 22, 2023.
With that being said — 2023 was Godzilla’s year, without a doubt! However, there’s a big difference between the Godzilla movies from Toho Studios and Legendary Pictures. Simply put, Toho owns Godzilla. However, Legendary Pictures secured the rights to the giant 500-ft lizard and other monsters in the Kaiju universe in 2014, ultimately coming up with a ‘Hollywood’ version known as the MonsterVerse.

Earth, the planet we all live on and must share with each other, is an amazing place full of wonders. Even now in 2024, it's wild to realize that humanity has yet to explore every inch of the planet, with a staggering percentage of the Earth's oceans having only been mapped by satellites. Although it feels like we've reached an age where there's little mystery left in the terrestrial, there still exists so much possibility on our planet before we even begin to consider other planets or galaxies beyond.
Although the theory of a hollow Earth in real life holds about as much veracity as a flat Earth, the concept has become a delightful metaphor in the MonsterVerse series of films for the exploration of new realms, continuing a tradition from classic monster movies like the original "King Kong" of adventure and discovery.

This article contains minor spoilers for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire."
Godzilla is having a bit of a resurgence, between the unprecedented Oscar victory, the TV series that did not need to be this good, and now the movie "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." After the world's strongest Titans battled it out and then fought against a giant robot, "Godzilla X Kong" sees the Titans taking control of the entire planet. The surface is now Godzilla's territory while Kong rules over the Hollow Earth. Things are simple and peaceful, until a secret society of giant apes decides to take over the planet, forcing Kong and Godzilla to team up and stop them.
This may be the best movie in the MonsterVerse yet, one that balances human drama with kaiju fun, expanding the world of the Hollow Earth and fleshing out the consequences and state of the world...

After making a successful small screen debut with Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters earlier this year, Legendary’s Monsterverse is returning this week with their fifth cinematic entry, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. With major comic-book movie franchises gradually losing their steam during the last couple of years, now is as good a time as any for the Americanized Kaiju cinematic universe to seize the market. Also, capitalizing on the recent VFX Oscar win of Godzilla Minus One, the upcoming Kaiju flick has the potential to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
It has been a decade since Gareth Edward’s much-acclaimed Godzilla (2014) paved the foundation of the Monsterverse and reignited the fanfare for the atomic lizard. Although during this period only a scant four movies have hit theaters, the in-universe mythology of the Titans (the American counterpart of Kaijus) has sprawled into a behemoth in its own right.

In today’s time, movies are less standalone and more franchise dependent. Whether it is the Dcu, MCU, Star Wars, Star Trek, or James Bond, it’s like audiences connect more with stories and characters they already know. But with the superhero fatigue setting in, comic book movies are having a hard time maintaining the success they have had over the past decade or so.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
And making use of this lull in the superhero genre, MonsterVerse director, Adam Wingard, is aiming to change the movie landscape. MonsterVerse movies, though a franchise in its own right, does not follow a definite timeline. This seems like an exciting opportunity for the director to make a mark.

Pyper Braun as Alice in ‘Imaginary’ (Photo Credit: Parrish Lewis / Lionsgate)
At first glance, it would seem as if Blumhouse’s new horror movie Imaginary is just another killer doll movie along the lines of Child’s Play or Annabelle. And after a watch, that’s pretty much what it is. But with a few twists.
Imaginary is about a children’s book author/illustrator named Jessica (DeWanda Wise from Jurassic World Dominion) who moves into her childhood home with her husband, Max (The Walking Dead’s Tom Payne), and his two girls, the teenaged Taylor (Monarch’s Taegen Burns) and the younger Alice (Desperation Road’s Pyper Braun). Lonely in her new place, Alice immediately makes an imaginary friend named Chauncey who takes the form of a cute little teddy bear. But there’s more to Chauncey than meets the eye – and he has history with Jessica.

While Solo Leveling is mostly being widely enjoyed by fans, its most recent update, episode 7.5, didn’t bring in the best of reviews. In fact, if anything, out of all the eight episodes released of the web novel turned manhwa-based anime series, this very episode has earned the reputation of becoming the worst-rated episode on Crunchyroll.

Despite this, the English dubbing voice actor for the series’ lead protagonist Sung Jinwoo is anything but disheartened about this news. We are in a golden age of Godzilla and kaiju cinema. No matter your level of familiarity with the iconic Toho character, and no matter what aspect of the mythos you like, there is something for everyone. There's the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated masterpiece "Godzilla Minus One" that brings the monster back to basics. There's the thrilling TV show which puts a focus on its human characters, and, of course, there's also a bonkers series of blockbuster movies.
After the disastrous Roland Emmerich film from 1998, it wasn't until 2014 that Hollywood figured out how to make a big budget "Godzilla" movie work. Since then, the MonsterVerse has turned into one of the better blockbuster franchises today. These movies mix the silliness of the best Toho kaiju movies with proper continuity and world-building. The result is that the MonsterVerse has grown to be an expansive franchise with dozens of characters and kaiju co-existing in...

Solo Leveling began premiering on January 6, 2024. Since then it has broken several records and crashed the Crunchyroll site. The manhwa became quite popular, and fans were urging for an anime adaptation. Their wish was fulfilled when the anime was announced almost one and a half years ago. Since then, they have been eagerly waiting for Solo Leveling’s release.
Fans had high expectations from the popular manhwa, and the anime adaptation exceeded the expectations. But it would not have been possible if Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini hadn’t taken action. It was due to his efforts that Chugong’s magnum opus got an anime adaptation, and Crunchyroll got its biggest hit of 2024. Rahul Purini had pitched the idea to a Japanese production house, Aniplex.

Pachinko. Godzilla. And Now Shōgun. Anna Sawai Is Still Processing the ‘Strange’ Moment She’s Having
Anna Sawai doesn’t seem to do small projects. At least not in the past few years.
Coming out of a supporting role in the BBC Two crime drama Girl/Haji, the New Zealand-born Japanese actress (and onetime vocalist in the girl group Faky) was cast in Pachinko, Apple TV+’s sweeping, multi-generational and multi-lingual adaptation of the Min Jee Lee novel, which reportedly cost $13 million per episode. (Sawai played Naomi, a co-worker of Sunja’s grandson Solomon at Shiffley’s Tokyo branch in the 1989 timeline.)

After a deal couldn’t be made for David Leitch to direct, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment have moved fast as the studio is in final negotiations for Rogue One director Gareth Edwards to helm a new Jurassic World movie. The studio recently dated the pic to bow on July 2, 2025 and moved fast to find a director with Edwards spending all of last week meeting with execs. After impressing producers Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall, who helped launch the franchise in the 90s, an offer soon followed and pre-production is expected to ramp up once a deal is sealed.
The new movie will be a completely fresh take on a Jurassic era with Jurassic World castmembers Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return, nor the original trilogy’s thespians Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill. David Koepp penned the script.

Television has long ridden the coattails of cinema when coming up with new programming, serializing popular genres like Westerns and Crime Thrillers since its very inception. However, the obvious budgetary limitations of TV production mean that certain kinds of stories are less suited for the small screen. Thankfully, we’re lucky enough to live in a time when technology and the streaming wars have finally caught up to film when it comes to producing the type of long-form content we’ve always yearned for.
Case in point, Legendary and Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters achieved the unthinkable by bringing blockbuster-worthy Kaijus to the small screen at a scale we’ve never seen before. And though the show has already aired its finale, I know that Kaiju fans are likely still clamoring for more TV-based monsters, so we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six TV shows to watch after Monarch.

"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" was a pleasant surprise. The show delivered kaiju action worthy of the big screen, while also presenting a more compelling human story than any of the movies in the MonsterVerse so far. Part of that was down to its smaller scale and a point of view that is closer to the ground than the movies. Though Godzilla showed up a couple of times to big effect, it's the story of two people who discovered they are half-brothers that made the show worth watching.
Throughout the first season we followed a mystery box surrounding the birth of the secret organization, Monarch, as well as scientist Hiroshi Randa's efforts to prevent another catastrophe like G-Day. Through the main plot, the show got closer and closer to the plot of "Godzilla: King of the Monsters," bringing back the Hollow Earth that allows the Titans to travel around the world,...

"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" wrapped up its first season this week with a surprisingly satisfying finale that wove together disparate threads the show has been untangling all season. Gareth Edwards’ visionary masterpiece, Godzilla, reinvented the saga of the iconic monster for a Western audience and acted as the foundation of Legendary Studios’ Monsterverse, a tribute to Toho’s classic Daikaiju epics. At the center of the franchise’s Titan-human correlation, the organization ‘Monarch’ was introduced, which initially served the purpose of introducing, researching, and explaining the Titan-related affairs to characters in-universe and, in the process, to the audience as well. However, soon enough, the narrative choice throughout the following stories made Monarch kind of redundant, with its usefulness being limited to only serving as an exposition device. This aspect gradually became so ludicrous that the characters in the movies acknowledged the fact through meta-jokes.
The recently ended Monsterverse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters changed the equation by tracing back to the origin of the organization, linking it with a post-World War II geopolitical scenario, and doubling down on...

Although almost every Kaiju movie fan would prefer the tedious human drama to be as lessened as possible so as to not meddle with the monster spectacles, it is an undeniable fact that a well-crafted human institution makes Kaiju stories more interesting. Aside from the fact that Godzilla movies are inherently symbolic of nature’s retribution against humanity for their folly, human actions give viewers a third-person perspective into the world of monsters. Legendary’s Monsterverse adhered to this perspective by introducing Monarch as a secretive Titan research organization, positing it as a mediator between humans and Titans, aiming to pave the way for co-existence.
On the exact opposite side of the spectrum exists Apex Cybernetics, a seemingly rival conglomerate that was introduced in Godzilla vs. Kong and whose origins can be traced back to the recently concluded Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Motivated by a different goal to that of Monarch,...

Aside from the core storyline, the emergence of Titans during the past and present timeline showcased differing coping mechanisms undertaken by humanity, ranging between willingness to co-exist to destructive reactions stemming from egocentric ideologies. Both of these narrative strands are tied up in the final episode of the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, titled ‘Beyond Logic’, in a spectacular fashion, leaving enough...

It has been observed time and again how important the balance between the narrative correlation of human-monster elements really is to make any monster-oriented story work well, and Apple TV+’s Monsterverse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has gained traction by duly exemplifying that. In the penultimate episode of the first season, the series once again doubles down on the narrative balance as we get to see Lee Shaw in a new light, especially through his relationship with Keiko’s son, Hiroshi.
In the previous episode, it was revealed that in the past timeline, after the power shift in Monarch, the military-minded Lieutenant Hatch had started calling the shots and brought the organization to the verge of being decommissioned by discrediting the scientific endeavors of Bill and Keiko. To counter Hatch’s report, Shaw instructed Bill and Keiko to chart out a Titan map, which led to Bill’s speculation...

Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode eight ended with a gut-wrenching cliffhanger that saw Cate, May, and Lee tumbling through a rift. Episode nine, the season’s penultimate, keeps us hanging about their fate and instead opens with a flashback to a Monarch test site in Kansas, 1962, and a young Hiroshi being babysat by Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) and Bill Randa (Anders Holm).
Scratch that…it’s actually Bill who’s pulled babysitting duty for the day as Lee is about to make history by traveling into a rift via a specially constructed ship. Before leaving, Lee loans Hiroshi his pocketknife to hold onto until he returns.
Bill and Lee have grown close to Hiroshi, and Lee compliments Bill on the job he’s doing raising the boy. Lee thinks Keiko would be proud.
