Like Father ......
nightringer-7684028 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Now, that's how you do climatic and shocking ends. No wonder Halston Sage left The Orville, this underrated role is too delicious to pass by.

The logical procedural mystery of Prodigal Son exploded with shocking, scary, sad and funny all at the same time in its first season finale. This episode is properly titled with the dots at the end signifying surprises. The whole episode is brilliantly a "not-to-be-missed" moments. Season 1 questions are answered in swift, breath-stealing and suspenseful 44 minutes.

I do hope Prodigal Son gets Season 2 and beyond.

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't see the surprise ending coming, but what an amazing twist that hints at a great new (and badly-needed) story arc for the second season! I can't wait to see what's ahead.

DAMN !!!!

Wow ! The season finale blew me away and left me praying for a season two. Michael Sheen is so charismatic as Martin that I actually felt bad when he was sent to gen pop and I was rooting for him to stay alive. All season Halston Sage (Ainsley) has been quiet and reserved but she kicked a** in the finale. I'm so glad Malcom got the closure he's been seeking all season.

Best plot twist ever.

You know in most shows you always get a feeling of how it's going to end.......but this, this I never even saw coming from any angle at all. If it's not renewed for season 2, then they must be out of their minds.

Best finale ending ever.

I pride myself on seeing how these kind of shows end or what is going to happen. Never saw this one. Even my girlfriend came up off the couch saying . We had to replay it 3 or 4 times. Great first season. We are already ready to rewatch the whole 1st season on Hulu again during the summer waiting for season 2. I don't see how this show gets cancelled.

Enthralling

Warning: Spoilers
I love shows that deal with psycopathy, crime, mystery, thrills, twists and turns and science. This show has it ALL and then some! The actors and actress hit the mark on their roles and provide a lot to think about. I would like to see Jessica do more like she did in this finale. She's a strong woman who was oppressed and destroyed by Martin, but she needs to show her strength more. Ainsley is a firecracker who has always listened and has been more reserved than Malcom. Further, she has shown little to no signs of trauma from her childhood, which makes the ending that more thrilling and exciting. I thoroughly enjoy watching Malcom work and think and put all the pieces together. I kind of thought that Malcom could not listen to his father about Endicott because he's done everything this season to prove he's not like his father at all. I think Gil is a genuine guy who truly cares about Malcom and I believe he still loves Jessica and contrary to the conversation between he and Jessica, their time has not passed. In addition, I really hope that Dani and Malcom explore the feelings they have for each other that were initially displayed when they went shopping for her red dress.

I really hope and pray that Fox renews this show. I have NEVER had a show that I waited for each week, but this one I do. I hate when we have multiple weeks between episodes. The director and creator could go in so many directions that the show could go on for many years!

Oh My God

I did not see that coming!

The women in the Whitley family are way more dangerous than the men! First Jessica shows real kick-ass heroics, then Ainsley shocks with completely unexpected rage and violence. Just wow! And not something you remotely expect on network TV.

I do love that the loose ends were tied up about the girl in the box, and that the worst villain gets his due (and I so loved his last words and the look of unbelief on his face). But I am blown away by the method.

I can't wait to see what happens in Season 2.

Revenge -- at long last!

Warning: Spoilers
Ainsley, my girl. Job well done! Bravo!!! Finally, someone does something positive for their dear old dad. We have a new Whitley psychopath vigilante, and it is none other than the beautiful Ainsley, who so efficiently, so brutally, and so elegantly slayed a dragon in cold blood. Magnificent. Few shows give an audience this kind of do, so I salute Prodigal for delivering with flying colors. The often monotonous struggle of Malcomb's to climb out from the shadows of his serial killer father, "The Surgeon," is something we visit every episode, which can become excruciatingly dull. We all know Malcomb is not his father, so enough with it. What separated this episode from all of the rest is the savagery of the aforementioned moments where the show almost breaks out of itself and into an entirely new realm; and one I hope to see more of as time goes on. Again, well done.

That just completely turned this show on it's head! That was a fantastic twist that came from out of nowhere and has reinvigorated my slowly waning interest in this show. Now I'm craving more!

Warning: Spoilers
Really? Really?! The son has been portrayed as messed up in the head with PTSD, while the daughter has been depicted as the truly level headed child.

But let's turn that on its head and make "... Like Daughter" the end of the episode title's unfinished sentence.

Puh-leeze

Unpredictable!

Warning: Spoilers
I was a bit overwhelmed with how fast the show seemed to be moving in the last two episodes. It seems they rushed production to beat the impending shutdown due to COVID. I am so glad they did!

This episode DID NOT disappoint. I rewound a few scenes to take in what I had just seen or heard. Jessica is an incredibly strong and fierce woman! She comes alive and flies in to fight mode.

Malcom does the unthinkable and allows his girl in the box to literally get away with murder.

Ainsley! Wowzer. Not only did she thoroughly get a rush from killing but I cant help but wonder how Malcom missed potential signs. Were there hints that we (& Malcom)missed on who she truly was?

I look forward to season 2!

Warning: Spoilers
Such a fantastic finale, they're definitely going to renew it. After filming her boyfriend bleeding and getting operated on at Clairmont, I knew she was going to be the one killing someone. What a fantastic way to show her dark side. Slitting his throat then going at his chest. I had a feeling she was about to snap. Like father like daughter I guess. Great finale, can't wait for next season.

Season One Review
southdavid16 December 2020
Usually, I try and avoid shows like "Prodigal Son", anything where is the same formula repeated over and over again wears on me pretty quickly, but the combination of Michael Sheen hamming it up Hannibal Lecter-style and Jesus from "The Walking Dead" doing his manic eyes thing was too much to resist. Though I made it through the whole run, by the end I was already watching out of a sense of obligation, rather than enjoyment.

Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) is a disgraced FBI profiler, he teams up with the NYPD and specifically with Gill Arroyo (Lou Diamond Phillips) the police office who arrested his father decades earlier. Malcolm's father is Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen) a notorious serial killer nicknamed "The Surgeon". Profiling for the NYPD gives Malcolm a reason to reconnect with his father, who, though confined to his prison cell, has earned a number of privileges over the years by operating on wealthy clients.

It's really hard not to start with the frankly glaring casting decisions of the show. Tom Payne, charismatic lead as though he is, is far too old to convincingly be Michael Sheen's son - let alone Bellamy Young, who plays his mother. Anybody that doesn't pause the show in the first episode to check out everyone's real ages is startlingly willing to suspend their disbelief. That said, I like all the characters and I like the way they interact with each other. I particularly like Keiko Agena as Edrisa, a forensic doctor unable to hide her crush on Malcolm and of course, Sheen is tremendous - chewing the scenery wonderfully as he switches between caring, concerned father and vicious monster.

The overall season story is OK. That a young Malcolm saw another victim of his father, but has blocked it out. The trouble is that 90% of the time, the show is just a reskinned version of "House" - a dysfunctional genius gets last minute inspiration from an outside source and saves the day.

I love Malcolm character...and what they did is made his sister the one! Are you kidding me.....I don't if I want to watch this direction....So predictable..I don't care for a sister character and now they want me to....I will see where it is going...If she takes over I will pass on this show..

Like Father...
Prismark1012 September 2021
Season 1 heads towards a crescendo. I thought it contained too many missteps.

Nicholas Endicott was introduced too late in the day as the big bad and his whole angle was unconvincing.

Endicott stabs Arroyo and his is still confident that he can get away with stabbing a policeman, that some minion will take the fall. Even with Arroyo knowing who stabbed him.

If New York is so corrupt. Then that corruption will still be there after Endicott's absence.

As for Dr Whitly there is a bounty for his head in prison. During the riot no one goes for Whitly.

Who cares if the black prisoner suddenly needs a surgeon. Certainly not the Aryan Brotherhood, especially after it's been implied that Whitly is also Jewish.

As for the surprise twist. Ainsley kills Endicott as he boasts he will get away with all his crimes.

Like father like daughter and for Dr Whitly to be on the phone straight after. It was just too silly instead of being enthralling.
