Mangku Jiwo
scenematica2 February 2020
Another higher level for indonesian horror. Mangkujiwo shows us the origin of Kuntilanak, trying to answer all the question about 'what Mangkujiwo is' in the Kuntilanak universe from 2006 to 2019. Azhar Kinoi Lubis gives a story instead of a jumpscare-thing to a horror movie. This is what a real origin means.

Past to present to past and to present again. unfortunately, as an origin movie, Mangkujiwo failed to tell us about their world. There's lack of dramatical value, only torture everywhere. We have no feel to anybody, there's relationship between one character and another, the only we see is just hostilities, and rivalries.

Thats all.

You get the answer about 'what Mangkujiwo is'?

Inconsistency, Incompetency
farhannurdiansyah8 February 2020
I cannot vent enough, how much I felt like leaving this movie in the cinema.

I do support archaic and traditional flairs to Indonesian horror movies - in fact, I'm quite a proponent to it. But this movie in specific, created mostly only one thing out of the wide-spectrum of background it has: nothingness.

This movie is just over-elongated build up of nothing. There's barely any sense of a climax to the movie, and I cannot stress enough how inconsistent it is with everything: Tone, Plot, Characters, Scriptwriting, you name it. Anything to do with the plot is in fact, garbage. Convictions and motives are usually just thrown out of the window to be replaced with even more baffling decisions.

There's also just, so much redundancy in this movie. Shots that have no effect to the overall experience and plot are everywhere- I don't get the point of watching three different torture scenarios when they end up practically the same; And with nothing to move the movie forward. Yeah I know that's a pretty taboo and old critique for a movie- there isn't an inherent need to move the movie forward with everything, pretty sure Tarantino is a great testament to that. This movie in particularly though made it awfully painful when you are fed with 7 different shots of a hunchback deciding whether he should enter a room or not.

At the very least, Performances, Editing, and Colouring, were tolerable. Sure they were still inconsistent, but the effort was made with some degree of competency.

That's about it I suppose. Got nothing much to say when this movie is exactly just that: Nothing.

Good effort

Rizal Mantovani started to build his version of Kuntilanak back then in 2006. Then he ruined it himself through his remake/reboot of 2018. Now I appreciate Azhar Kinoi Lubis in terms of his effort of the franchise with this remarkable spin-off/prequel vision. I found some plot holes indeed yet I don't mind to see the upcoming sequel if there's any for further explanation. I mean, not sure whether Mangkujiwo is more to 2006 or 2018 version one.

I Still can enjoy this movie

Even though the story is not perfect, the foundation to enter Kuntilanak universe quite make sense. Sujiwo Tedjo as Broto is most of the character make this film different. I don't say this horror film, this is thriller movie with covered by javanese culture which a lot of mystical ritual.

Storyline is....horendous! the director is trying too hard to stitch the pieces together, and trying too hard to make twist; total flop!!

Nice Storyline To Watch

Warning: Spoilers
This movie acts as a prequel of Kuntilanak 2006 until 2019.

SPOILER ALERT!!! Connection with Kuntilanak 2006-2008: 1. Now we know why Samantha has an evil (dark) side and then act like devil. 2. We already know the origin of Lingsir Wengi for calling Kuntilanak to kill anybody. 3. We know what the essence of "Mangkujiwo", explained in the mid-credit scene. 4. Nyi Kenanga is called "Putri" who's related to "Mbah Putri" in Kuntilanak 3 (2008). We have an explanation about the twin mirror. They are knowledge that keeps life! It's possible Nyi Kenanga will use it for her eternal life. Mangkujiwo must to have sequel for further explanation!

Connection with Kuntilanak 2018-2019: 1. We know why the hair pin can "kill" the Kuntilanak in Kuntilanak 2 (2019) 2. We know about the nail of the mirror in Kuntilanak (2018).

Theory: Uma might be the next satan (Kuntilanak). The clue is how she can kill by herself, especially when she kills Pulung by turn back his head.

Mangkujiwo - The Creation of Kuntilanak
cynthiafebrianikairupan13 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
For those who follows The Chanting (Kuntilanak) portray by Julie Estelle, this Mangkujiwo is actually part of the Julie Estelle Universe. If I could compare other Indonesia Horror movies to this one, its literally another dif ball game since this is more like a drama political horror than any regular horror. To those who watch this movie while running errand, I suggest you watch your movie some other time because this movie is very complicated and the time frame is running back and forth. The movie is well made and you should pay a close attention to the details.. From. The wardrobe, makeup dan the art, this movie is taking the background story of Middle Java Indonesia in the 50's-60's and they use the Aristocrats drama as the premise. Brotoseno and Cokrokusumo once a good old friend back in their service period in Keraton unfortunately Cokrokusumo betraying Brotoseno so Keraton was banishing him from their royal kingdom.

Several years passing by, Brotoseno finds a way to avenge Cokrokusumo by creating a mystical beast Kuntilanak.

Kuntilanak itself was portrayed by Asmara Abigail, she plays Kanti in the movie and Kanti was Brotoseno personal dancer.

Kanti was with child when Brotoseno founds her in the village but sincehe knows that the child she conceive is Cokrokusumo's then that time only Brotoseno took Kanti in his house and did some rituals to transform Kanti into Kuntilanak.

Before Kanti kill herself, Brotoseno tear Kanti's womb and on that day Uma was born. Of course as child Uma never knows her biological Mother but coming that time Uma was just about to face any danger, Uma start to sang Lingsir Wengi and Kanti came and saving Uma. So then Brotoseno knows that Uma is the perfect weapon he could use to kill Brotoseno.

Kudos Mangkujiwo.. Ya'll should watch this movie..
