Great so far!
garettskaar122222 April 2021
It has a slower pace, but I think the character introductions were great and it has more of a realistic vibe to it than most dark and ominous mysterious. I am looking forward to the next episode.

A familiar yet fresh setting complements the acting prowess in the show
etherealreviews19 April 2021
Mare of Easttown on surface reminds of past HBO murder mystery shows that also take place in a secluded town with the protagonist having a broken past. However, Kate Winslet's performance as Mare breathes fresh air to this typecast genre.

Having little expectations, I was pleasantly surprised as the pilot built up the premise and characters in an engaging manner. Mare is detective sergeant of Eastwood PD and is a divorced grandmother. All characters are well written and performed flawlessly.

Similar to other shows of this genre, Mare has an unsolved case of a missing teenager to which she is still troubled by in her daily life. The rest of the episode unveils to what I can presume is going to be THE case for this season.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the episodes and hope it remains fresh throughout.

A slow yet brilliantly paced first episode
rodrigues-3918921 April 2021
The first episode does exactly what it needs to, it provides us with the main social dilemmas that each of the characters face - these surreal yet intriguing story arcs are fleshed out quite well and I hope the series keeps up the brilliant writing. The camera work of this episode is beautiful and helps each scene flow into the next without the viewer losing interest in the story. The cast is impeccable and Winslet's accent is an absolute wonder to behold, the comforting and well-written script helps elevate the series into a level that I'm fairly surprised to see. Can't wait for what this series has to offer, I have a feeling it's going to be a dramatic and interesting ride.

Titanic vs. LA Confidential - with Hoagies!
spenser-4356319 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Good first episode. More of a domestic drama than a murder mystery - but a good start. It was nice to see Kate Winslet do the accent of our old hometown.

Looks like the murder mystery aspect will pick up with the next episode.

Fantastic opening episode.
eldreddsouza3 June 2021
This was a brilliantly opening episodes. One of the best opening episodes of any show imo. It's extremely well written, acted and directed. The last thing I watched Kate Winslet in was the movie Contagion. She's such an amazing actor and this show is no exception. It's such a delight to watch her act. This episode is brilliantly paced. There's so many things that the writers have managed to fit in this one hour and you never feel bored. I didn't come to know how time went by watching this.

10/10 opening. Looking forward to watching the rest of the episodes.

Kate Winslet deserved that Emmy
gedikreverdi15 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Kate Winslet is such a good actor. She's Mare the Lady Hawk who's a detective in Easttown. It's been a long time that I haven't been enchanted by the beauty of the pilot of a show. The characters are so intriguing that I wanted to know more about them right away including Erin who's a single mother until I see her naked dead body in the river by the bridge in the early morning.

Subtly poignant
Calicodreamin30 June 2022
I didn't expect to feel as drawn into this story as I find myself. It's subtle yet poignant. The characters are well cast and incredibly well acted, I love Winslet in this.

Good subculture deep dive, but one scene was too much
Hughmanity1 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Great dive into the subculture of Delaware County, PA and Kate Winslet does a fine job with her portrayal of a bitter, no-nonsense detective that's been beaten down by life.

It was pretty clear from the start who was going to die, since the only character the show was building affinity for was Erin. That's fine but the scene preceding her death was too much suspension of disbelief for me. The father of Erin's child is going to watch his mean and ugly girlfriend set up Erin and then beat her up like he somehow enjoys it? And why, because she sent a text wishing to get back together with him? This made no sense and just seemed like needless, over the top hatred generation for the father and girlfriend. I'm sure it will get paid off later as they get their comeuppance or whatever but it also just struck me as jumping the shark way too early.

Most are saying this is a great show so I'll stick with it and hope the writers take more care from here. The best villains are ones that think they are doing the right thing, not ones who blatantly act evil just for the sake of evil and getting the audience to hate them.

A slow start but I am hopeful...
MazzyMayhem-117-54451119 April 2021
For the first half hour, this was slow and a bit boring, with unlikeable characters. The only person I warmed to was little Erin.

However, the story moved up a notch in the second half and I look forward to seeing the next instalment, which we unfortunately have to wait until next week to see. Fingers crossed...

Too constructed
gabriel-808 May 2021
After watching the first episode I was left with a feeling, that I didn't really believe the environment, I didn't really believe the characters. It is as if they try too much. Oh, it is ever so gritty and depressing, and oh, our characters are so real. No, not really. Unlike many comparable British shows, where you forget you are watching actors, forget you are watching a constructed story, this one just doesn't seem quite right. And I may still be surprised (I hope I will) by the plot, but so far it seems rather generic and predictable. A plot point revealed in episode 2, I already pointed out in this episode. Hope I am wrong. Will keep watching though, as it seems like it consists of 7 episodes and no more. Networks should try more of those.

Boring

I started this show because it has excellent reviews.

Was I watching another show?

Nothing happens in the first 40 minutes.

Actually it was kinda boring.

Not so good
grondonamanu13 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
1) I LOVE Kate Winslet, but up to this episode she doesn't convince me as a cop, I'm sorry she simply doesn't.

2) SO full of stereotypes... The lesbian teen with short hair and plays the guitar with her rock band, the violent and drunk father who drinks beer, the bullying... 3) What a horrible city, seriously I would have killed myself if I lived there.

Hope it gets better because I want to like this one, HBO rarely produces bad shows.

[6.6] A depressed pilot
cjonesas8 August 2021
A slow-paced pilot, too slow-paced, with some good development and acting going to dust. 58 minutes of near nothingness.

I do hope that the next 6 episodes are not similar, cause then we would have an average rating of 5.5-6.

Who are the writers?!

Like watching grass grow
interestingstuff27 October 2022
I just finished this episode and have no idea what I just watched. I felt like I watched grass grow. It was so slow, boring and pointless where you stare at a screen for 60 minutes and absolutely nothing useful or noteworthy happens.

You have this lady detective who looks and acts extremely depressed, walking around huffing and puffing, barely able to breath, walking into a building, arresting someone, then talking to an old lady, then going to pet shop to buy a glass box for her daughter's turtle, then talks a bit with his ex husband in a bitter way and talks to some random guy at a bar, hangs out with him, comes home and puts his kid to sleep, then goes to sleep and the episode ends. That's literally the entire episode. Yes, it IS that boring and then some more.

People say the show picks up after second episode but first episode was pretty terrible. Just skip it and start from second episode.

Quite a bit slow-paced
pablo_moriano3 May 2021
I'm not really okay with Kate Winslet since she got that Oscar instead of Angelina Jolie, but now it's something else. This show is developed in an oppressive atmosphere where everything happens without anyone noticing. Give it a try.

Nothing happens

I don't know what episode the people watched that have this 8s and 9s, but the episode I watched could have been a soap opera. No action, just people, cliches, and bad drama.

Boring and so typical.
kevcargill17 August 2021
I'm now getting tired of writers and directors making these soap operas masquerading as crime dramas. If you like clever crime stories don't bother with this. However, if mediocre soaps are your thing go for it.

Tedium Personified
helenahandbasket-9373421 April 2021
I get that we're supposed to feel the grit the residents live in, the monotony of the day-to-day small town life, but yikes, this makes you really want to hate almost everyone from the get-go.

Mare, our protagonist is about as scripted of an angry, irritated detective as you get. The ancillary characters are much of the same. But the anger and what seems to be hatred of her job makes me question what could possibly be motivating Mare to stick around.

You can read what's coming- it's like an anvil to the head. If you can't glean the entire storyline from the first 15 minutes, then this show is definitely for you, and I have hopes that Winslet surely wouldn't take a job that's so poorly stereotyped, but then again, Nick Cage has made a career out of it, so who knows.

I'm waiting until the series is over to go back and binge watch (I hate HBO for this fact) and I'll give it one more episode to stop being so poorly done. Maybe the production just needed an episode to work out the kinks.

Unimpressive tedium
jaimemedina-3628819 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Such a cliche that everyone in the small town is an inbred asshole. Very little happens but for a boring procession of tedium I've seen a few times now already. This is in no hurry to go anywhere and Winslet is certainly not flexing any acting skills in the first snoozer of a episode where only the last minute has any intrigue. But by then you seen it coming a mile away. If you did well then I hate to break it to you but you're not much smarter than the chuckle head townies. Sorry.

HBO has been doing this a lot lately. They know they have a quasi captive audience and take a premise that would probably have been better executed in a 2 hour movie, and string that baby out for 7 to 10 episodes just enough to wring all the tension out of it except for a few supposedly high impact scenes.
