Interesting concept, but not an overly impressive end result...
paul_haakonsen12 August 2021
Stumbling upon the 2021 horror movie "Blood Born" from writer and director Reed Shusterman, I opted to sit down and watch it, simply because I hadn't seen it already, and also because of it being a horror movie.

The movie's synopsis definitely sounded interesting enough, and I must admit that I do like the concept idea of the storyline and script here.

However, the movie was just lacking punch and impact. Sure, the movie was watchable, but it was just not a horror movie that managed to stand out in the vast sea of horror movies. And I do believe, that "Blood Born" is a movie that I will most likely have forgotten about come next week.

The pacing of the storyline was adequate, but there was just too little happening throughout the course of the movie to keep me sufficiently entertained. Sure, I sat through the entire movie, but I was only mildly entertained by what transpired on the screen. And I was missing that particular special ingredient to push the movie above and beyond the limitations of mediocrity.

The acting in "Blood Born" was adequate, taking into consideration the limitations of the script and storyline. I wasn't familiar with anyone on the cast list, and that is something I enjoy. And that was certainly working well in favor of the movie, despite of the movie never rising above mediocrity.

Sure, "Blood Born" is a movie that can be watched once, but it is doubtful that you'll ever return to watch it a second time. I know I am not going to do that.

The ending of the movie was sort of very, very predictable and also very anti-climatic. It sort of made me feel like writer and director Reed Shusterman ended up slapping me in the face with a cold, dead fish after I had sat through that ordeal.

My rating of "Blood Born" lands on a less than mediocre four out of ten stars. It was watchable, yes, but it just fell into a slump and never really managed to take me on a thrilling ride.

Blood Born

Warning: Spoilers
After struggling to have a child, Eric and Makayla have hired a witch doctor named Ola to help. She moves into their home and concocts a series of magical rituals and ceremonies to bring a child into their lives. If you truly want something so badly, are you willing to take it, even if it brings something not quite human into your life? That's the question behind Blood Born.

Writer and director Reed Shusterman was inspired by the upcoming birth of his child: "I started development on Blood Born right when my wife and I had just decided to start having a baby. And, in a very literal interpretation of "write what you know," I wrote about that.

On one level this movie is about the general fears of pregnancy and parenthood, like what happens to you/your partner's body and the physical space the baby will take up. But what really scared me into making this movie was how much a baby would change me. I'd no longer be the most important person in my wife's life. Hell, I wouldn't be the most important person in my own life. In a certain way, I'd be giving up myself, my being."

Look, when a magic user comes into your home and tells you that she's helped people with hysterectomies have babies and promises that you'll have a child in a month, maybe things aren't going to go well. Then again, I come from a mindset where I'm always looking for the neighbors offering tannis root.

How badly do Eric and Makayla want children? Enough to sacrifice animals? And what will they do when the child needs blood more than milk? I'm asking way more questions than the film's protagonists, obviously.

Not a horror

Warning: Spoilers
Wasn't a thriller either. Was just kinda dumb. For starters, they weren't believable as adults, let alone a couple. They seemed very childish, as if high school seniors. And as a couple, well they didn't have any chemistry. Might be due to the fact that the husband is clearly gay. And there's nothing against gay actors, but he didn't come across as hetero and into his wife on an emotional level. Both of their performances were flat tho. And the midwife was more comic relief than anything, suggesting this should've been labeled as a comedy.

None of the actions of the couple made any sense, for grown ups. I'm sure even a child would ask questions about what they were being asked to do. But they didn't. And the widest things kept happening to them.

The ending was awful. Very rushed. The actions of Eric made no sense. This whole time he's been saying something is wrong, something is not right, but when the friend comes over to save them, he tells her to go away? And even when the vampire doctor comes he still doesn't try to stop it? That's just bad writing.

I read that this movie was created because the writer had these types of fears as his wife got pregnant. As a father myself, I can say I never felt like I was going to have a vampire baby. Yes I get the fears of maybe something goes wrong, deformities, birth problems, etc. But this was just off and bad.

DO NOT WATCH!
wlevyiii19 May 2023
One of the SICKEST most DEPRAVED movies I have EVER seen! Just pure evil without any purpose. People giving this a high rating must be just as evil. I feel like I have to shower and go to church right away to get the yuck off me and out of my head!

That said, the story is TOTALLY lame! No grown ass man would allow someone to come into his house and boss him around. And any couple that desperate to have a baby needs SERIOUS psychological counseling.

The only thing this movie has going for it is good acting. I just have to wonder how evil Hollywood is to make a movie like this. All I can say is STAY AWAY!

Wanted to like this movie, interesting premise, but really just slowly started sliding down hill throughout. It's an Ok 1 and done, but if you have something better to watch then PASS!

Was original and interesting until.......
inexplicable00719 August 2021
A young couple has struggled many times with conceiving a child and are at the end of their rope when a friend recommends an unconventional route which involves a group that practices magic and promises success in getting women pregnant.. I was curious about this movie and was initially very entertained as the story developed and introduced some odd methods to get the wife protagonist pregnant; I felt it took creativity and it was amusing to watch the "witch" come up with something different each scene. However, by the second half the movie grew weaker with some shabby acting performances and even worse laughable CGI. Then main characters who had started out strong seemed to be phoning it in but I think that may be in part due to the script. What had started as a decent although low budget movie seemed to descend into a first year film student's project by the end. I gave it a 5 because I believe it is not that bad and deserves a view and hat's off to the devotion to the unusual plot.

Comedy horror
pauladam0519 July 2021
The film was ok but I'd say it's more like a comedy, the old lady Ola was so funny at times.

A Cool Concept and a Solid Watch
spencur5 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Blood born is the story of a couple desperate to have a child and resort to unconventional means to achieve this goal. For a B level film blood born makes the most of everything. I found the base concept to be interesting and had some interesting twists. Even the less seen actors in the film give great performances. It also has a few funny moments most of which include Ola. The only complaint I had about it is the extras don't seem to know what they're supposed to be doing at any given time. Overall a fun watch that isn't too heavy on the gore or jump scares if you're into that.

A sick crazy baby making!
kwihui21 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It was well done. Casts were great too.

No one can desire a baby this much. I think that the husband pushed his wife to do this "magic" thing, but I'll bet he regrets it grossly in the end.

The soon to be mom, she is one crazy psycho in the end.

A Good horror film, I think that the horror fanatics would enjoy it. A perfect date movie. Cling on to your boyfriend kind.

Yes, I'd recommend it!

Enjoy 😉.

Wait For Instructions
wandernn1-81-6832741 September 2021
There certainly is a LOT of WOW about this one. But Rosemary's Baby it is not.

First off, it goes to show you only in today's WOKE society would two people be so stupid as to accept some sort of outlandish ritual fertility treatment such as the one featured here. No one is that stupid, except all you WOKERS.

But funny, they go through all this kaakaa just to have a ridiculous ending like the one we get here. But at least the right person was killed although really, all of them should have been killed.

The most disappointing thing, I guess the baby turned out normal after all.

4/10.

Unique Addition to the Genre
aherrin-1827714 August 2021
For starters, this movie's production value is extremely high for an Indie film. (In my humble opinion). Not only did the actors come through but each sequence was well shot and you feel the parts you are meant to feel. This includes very well done, and slightly slow burn, gore scenes.

I loved the twist at the end (no spoilers), but I love how unique this movie was in taking on a story that has been done more than a few times. After the disappointment that was False Positive, THIS was the baby horror movie I didn't know I needed.

just arriving from my yearly menopausal break...
ops-5253523 July 2021
This was actually a very nice surprise to start a new reviving reviewing season with. Its a film about the dream of a child, a dream that 99% of the world population dream about, namely to have a child. Unfortunately only 85% will come through the normal way, some percent via the tube method, and a tiny fraction come to our brave new world through magics, and thats what this film is about.

Its allthoughits human thematics a horror genericly made film, it has its issues and does have a few strains that slips due to overuse of ultrasound gelatics, but the actors does a great job, the spirits of the acts are well done indeed, the special effects well executed on a moderate budget, even though the beginning and the end of the movie lacks some coherence, the grumpy old man finds this film highly recommendable, not a prescriptive method to make the big break of populating the planet, but a fresh idea to work on for others or maybe a sequel by the vampyrical production crew and bloodthirsty director of the film ''blood born''.

It has its flaws ,but it reflects the desperation of those that hopes and prays, alittle goryhere and there, blood is inevitably connected to child birth, so whether faint hearted or not, it made me have a good morning hour watch. Have a look without expectation and youll be happy ever after.

Loved the ending
norma4658 August 2021
Pleasantly surprised by the film. Obviously they were on low budget but they kept the dialog interesting and the acting pretty good. Would have loved to see a little more shock in the middle but it was worth hanging around for the craziness at the end. Definitely worth a watch.

More Rosemary's Baby than jump out horror
other21009 August 2021
This is an original take on the topic of an unnatural pregnancy, and it turned out to be a lot of fun. Unlike the disjointed and forgettable recent Hulu movie with a similar theme (False Positive), this one is well-plotted with memorable lines and solid characters. Embedded with a quirky humor, balanced against moments of increasing suspense and horror, the writing takes you along what, in real life, would be an absurd proposition: a magical pregnancy. But the ride is worth taking because of the plot developments and the excellent acting. Melanie Haynes as Ola pulls off the difficult problem of being a sympathetic grandmotherly figure who may not be as harmless and kind as she seems. Rosie Moss and Antoine Perry are a couple with real chemistry, and Cole Gerdes gets to chew some scenery at the doctor. Cinematography is really excellent for this sort of film, the music works well and the setting (mostly in one house) is textured and appropriate.

All in all, the film is a fun ride, and I recommend it.

Clever twists make for a surprisingly fun ride
girl4film21 July 2021
It's always a crapshoot watching a low budget horror movie, but this one has enough strong writing, production value, and solid twists to make it worth your while. The film uses its budget well, mostly contained in one location. Touches like red walls add to the building tension.

So how far would a couple go that wants a baby? The movie answers that to the extreme, acknowledging the ludicrousness with self-aware touches of humor.

It begins with a slow burn, but when things go off the rails in the third act it's a wild, delightful ride. Definitely recommended for horror fans, but also easily enjoyable for those who favor suspense movies. There is a lot of interesting universe set up to explore here with The Foundation, so I hope a sequel is in the works!

Love This Movie
EthelX8 August 2021
Great plot - more interesting than most horror movies. It's got believable characters, snappy dialogue, unexpected humor, great acting and is totally engaging. It's not a typical horror movie - it won't keep you up at night- but you'll never forget it. Wonderful!!

Surprisingly and unpretentiously enjoyable
paradajzlost25 October 2021
If you love the high end production and a lot of gore moments, this movie might not really be for you. The budget is low, there is no fancy animation, but what i loved is that it doesn't look cheap and i really enjoyed how it got me into the story. It's unpretentiously enjoyable. It was not boring, not even for a second, and the acting (the main cast) was quite good actually.

As for the genre, it's not really a horror, and it even has some funny elements (the granny is so cool in her strict rules and madness). And the story reminds me of Stephen King's books, with a bizarre twist at the end.

The only thing that sort of left loose is the opening scene which pretty much has nothing to do with the rest of the movie. But if you disregard that one, you'd be enjoying an unexpectedly cool bizarre story. And the plot have much more sense than most blockbuster movies - i could totally imagine people reaching the same decisions and reacting the same way in real life.

Yep, i would even watch it again. Therefore - a solid 8.
