The daughter of the master
unbrokenmetal24 May 2009
A master of the Wudang style is poisoned by Japanese fighters because they couldn't defeat him in an honest fight. His daughter (Lin Quan) is repeatedly attacked, too. In one remarkable scene, she spares the life of an injured and defenseless enemy and obtains valuable information in return, for he realizes she is an honorable opponent. She escapes and goes to see her uncle who lives far away in the mountains. After he taught her some powerful new techniques, she returns to have her revenge on the Japanese.

The strong points of the movie are the fight scenes (no jumping to tree-tops, no wire tricks, just the real hits and kicks, totally believable) and the great landscapes which are well photographed. On the other hand, the Anti-Japanese propaganda seems a bit overdone to an European audience who doesn't watch Kungfu flicks for the politics. But that is naturally a point an Asian audience will feel different about, so I'll ignore that and give 7 of 10 stars, anyway.

Mainland China kung fu

Warning: Spoilers
THE UNDAUNTED WU TANG is a typical mainland kung fu film from China, full of the usual anti-Japanese propaganda. A girl's father is a master fighter and takes part in some tournament battles. When he proves too strong for his opponents, they poison him. His grieving daughter heads off to a lonely mountain to find a remote uncle who trains her in the martial arts; she then returns to seek revenge. This is the kind of cheap and cheerful production that doesn't let an extraordinarily low budget get in the way of it having a good time. The plot is simplistic and the performances anything but engaging. Unusually, the English dubbing is by Chinese actors speaking English with thick accents, so it's a little more realistic than most examples of dubbing. The fights are grounded and ordinary, but there are a lot of them.
