Enjoyable storyline
flejklw18 October 2022
It is not for me to judge others, but i cannot see how you can rate this film so low, it was a wonderful story and i found the relationship between the main characters, especially Zoe Chao who as "Vienna" was bubbly and funny and made the film fun to watch, although still taking on board the seriousness of " Bart" who she come across in the Film.

The story evolves with the secret that Vienna has ,that at some point during the film all is revealed. The problem for Bart is how he deals with it and how it effects him personally.

I guess the only issue for me was the expectation of if or when all will be revealed, but overall it is a good watch.

interesting drama with a bit of mystery
LetsReviewThat2614 April 2022
When bart falls alseep at the cinema, the charming vienna wakes him and something clicks. They have so much fun together. There was some mystery to this movie that kept it interesting. But both main actors were great in their roles. It was a little sad but good hearted and altogether an good movie.

6/10 - surprisingly impactful romantic drama will be one I hope to revisit despite a weird and slightly off-putting twist.

Not your usual cookie cutter Rom-Com.
TxMike10 November 2021
In fact it isn't really a comedy, more of a romantic movie with some humor sprinkled in. I like movies that use a unique approach and this one does. It isn't a great movie but it is entertaining enough.

My wife and I watched it at home on DVD from our public library. At the 27 minute mark she said spontaneously "This isn't a very good movie." Part of that was motivated by the filthy language the Wayans character used, and some of it in front of the small child. Poor script writing I suppose.

Then something dramatic happened about the 32 minute mark, something that changed the whole complexion of the man-woman relationship. Now we understood why she seems so vague and so unusual and why she carried thousands of dollars of cash in her purse.

Worth a look for anyone who an enjoy a movie that veers off into an unexpected direction.

Manic Pixie Dream Girl
SnoopyStyle16 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Struggling writer Bart (Finn Wittrock) is trying to recover from the collapse of his life. His girlfriend left him. With only three hundred bucks in the bank and no job, he has to move into the garage of his best friend Doug (Damon Wayans Jr.) and his wife Rachel (Casey Wilson). His life starts turning around when he meets Vienna (Zoë Chao). She carries lots of cash but no credit cards. She has no cell phone and then she reveals something truly out there.

Despite her denial, Vienna is very much a manic pixie dream girl. This is that kind of movie and a fine one at that. Zoë Chao is a fascinating performer. Her reveal is a bit expected and I like some of the consequent conflict. Then comes the shocking turn. At first, I am delighted with the great twist but I thought about it a bit more. Even if she's imaginary, lots of things associated with her is not. They did a lot things together. They had a place together. I assumed before the reveal that it was her place but she doesn't exist and he doesn't have any money. How did he pay for it and where did all that furniture come from? It makes no sense. She has to exist because someone has to pay for everything. I don't want nitpick but it's annoying when the story that requires careful plotting falters due to poor construction.

Better than you might think
brianrepublicinc19 January 2023
A rom-com with a twist is how most people have described it. The two leads definitely make this movie with A plus chemistry. At times the writing is laugh out loud funny and sometimes it's a little dull. There are also a few moments that touch the heartstrings. I believe the screenwriter was influenced by the novel "Bid Time Return" which was the novel that "Somewhere in Time" was based on. I hope that doesn't give too much away. Overall it was an enjoyable movie experience. Like I said before Finn Wittrock and Zoe Chao are two underrated actors that really make this work. The ending however doesn't really make sense when you think about it, but still worth the watch.

Pretty good

Warning: Spoilers
Interesting, cute love story, but overall odd ending.

I mean the girl was not on the desert pictures.

And the paper picture still turned up.

And how did he get all that money?

And how can you be so chill when she tells you she's from the future, I could not stop asking things.

About proving her origin: I would have stolen a piece of her hair or something and make a dna lookup :)

Good Actors, Awful Screenplay
peterscarpinato13 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Young man with a recent history of mental health issues meets a mysterious woman who changes his life.

I was initially expecting this to be a Before Sunrise type film. Two people falling for one another over one long weekend. And that is what it was for a while. Not original, but still charming.

Then as we learn more about the woman, I begin to assume she's got her own mental health issues. Now I'm expecting a Silver Linings Playbook. Two people with problems finding strength from each other. Again not original but would have made sense, especially with the woman's reveal as to why she's there.

But no. The writer decides to throw a curveball that is completely out of the blue. It also renders much of what came before it irrelevant. In fact, none of the film makes sense if you care enough to take the time and really think about it.

That being said, the lead actors had a nice chemistry with Finn Wittrock especially appealing as a leading man. Now someone just needs to give him a better a script.

I'm partly to blame I guess. What did I expect to be released on a non holiday weekend during COVID.

Loved everything about it!
mynameisnotsarah29 May 2021
This movie is a little gem! Great acting, scenario, writing, direction and just an overall great film to enjoy amidst many soulless options out there right now. This could have quickly unraveled in its storyline and gone a totally different way, but everything was so on point that it made for a really enjoyable and interesting experience. I came in with an open mind an absolutely loved it! Highly recommend!!!

A Romcom that is More than just a Romcom!
artmachine28 April 2024
A really cute, light, romantic and humorous, but a feel good movie that is more than *just a typical romcom*. This romcom makes you fall in love with each character for who they are, along with their flaws, and that is good. However you're always sort of wondering if it's really good to believe in these characters. This is one about a true love, yes, and it takes you along in their perfect little adventure of romance, yes, but it leaves you with the feeling of "do I believe this or do I not?" You don't get confirmation until the end... and then the end again. Watch it and you'll see, especially if you like romantic comedies with a bit of a twist.

it's just not good
thatgirlistall21 March 2021
Nothing made sense :) the chemistry between the characters is cringey and a little uncomfy :) the "big reveal" was so unwarranted and odd :)

i went to see this because i had missed taking myself to the movies amidst the pandemic, and this was the only thing out currently that seemed to interest me. however, i wanted to leave the theater while i was watching. it really did not scratch the itch that i had to go to the movies again. :/ hoping for better releases in the coming months!

Just okay romantic comedy
paul-allaer12 March 2021
As "Long Weekend" (2021 release; 91 min.) opens, we get to know Jeremy. He is definitely down on his luck, being kicked out of his apartment by his landlord, and hence having to move in the garage of his buddy Doug, who is married with 3 little kids. Jeremy decides to go see "Being There" that is playing at the Hayworth (in LA), where he dozes off and he is awakened by the movie theater employee, a woman named Vienna. One thing leads to another, and she asks him out for a drink. She seems to be the mysterious type, with no driver's license, no cell phone, and a wad of $20 bills in her purse... At this point we are 10 min. into the movie but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Couple of comments: don't confuse this movie with the same titled 1978 film by Colin Eggleston or its 2008 remake. This "Long Weekend" is a labor of love from Stephen Basilone, who stars (as Jeremy) and he also wrote the original script and produced for good measure. But does it make a decent film? The answer is... at times, but not consistently enough. First of all, the script is simply not compelling. Even when we learn the Big Reveal about one-third into the movie, nothing much changes, and it seems like the script is scraping the bottom of the barrell to round out the 90 full min. Second, this film stands or falls with how the 2 main characters, Jeremy and Vienna, relate to each other. Sadly, there is no major chemistry between Stephen Basilone and Zoe Chao (as Vienna). In particular Basilone is visibly "acting". I kept waiting for the film to take off, and ended up waiting and waiting... Please note that this film was made in 2019, and has been sitting on the shelves for 2 years.

"Long Weekend" opened in theaters this weekend, and given the dearth of new theater releases while the pandemic is still raging in this country, I decided to check it out. I really shouldn't have. The Friday late afternoon screening where I saw this at turned out to be a private screening: I was literally the only person in the theater. And the rest of the movieplex resembled a ghost town. No idea how movie theaters can operate profitably like that. If you are in the mood for a romantic comedy or are a fan of either Zoe Chao or Stephen Basilone, I'd suggest you check it out (but going in with expecetations in check), be it in the theater, on VOD, or eventually on DVD/Blu-ray, and draw your own conclusion.

Mixed - Could've Been Better
pc957 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Written and directed by Stephen Basilone, "Long Weekend" stars attractive and competent leads Zoe Chao and Finn Wittrock with nice supporting performance from Wayans Jr. The movie starts off decently featuring some interesting soundtracks a bit reminiscent of Tangerine Dream. The lead-in is good but the romance seems a bit forced and expedited by the 1/3rd mark. The main problem through is Basilone's script. *spoilers following* - he goes for whimsical tone, when his story could've been better suited with conventional drama. Basilone opts for a tonal dive-off effectively off-roading it with the story - ala bringing in sci-fi - but the movie is not near sci-fi nor really should it have been-- there's a little bit of "The "Time Travelers Wife evoked in the feeling of the movie - though this movie is just not up to the same production points nor really needed quality for its ideas or budget. I wanted to like "Long Weekend", but the story needs more urgency and convention. It seems like the story and actors have missed their potential - there could've been a stronger movie here. The talent was ready and well selected, however the story needed more substance. 6/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Movie opens with some sort of mystery senses and ends with a girl from the future tried to leave some money for her mother so cure cancer Bud ended up saving a boy with tumor and left 90k in his bank to spare and believing their relationship is real. Wow, people from the future has nothing better to do? The idea is some what similar to The Contact at a such low level scale.

Excellent movie
gordonsground-0710322 May 2021
You know those movies that you can't stop talking about to your friends and if they watch it, it's glorious, and those who haven't seen it can't relate and are sick of hearing about it?

Thats how much I enjoyed the art direction, twists, and how you are 'involved' in wondering 'how it's going to happen', or maybe it isn't 😉, and the scales of wonder you slide through.

It's a feel good, relatable love story that appeals to our sense of wonder and it hits all the bases.

Made No Sense
tjdercks1 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I found it intriguing, and it kept my attention, mostly because it was clearly signally a 'twist' and I was trying to figure it out (I was expect it would be she got pregnant and ...). First off, if you were trying to find someone trustworthy with your life savings, and Mother's life, would you choose a passed out Drunk at a weekday matinee? Why not go back and trust your Mother or Father? Why not win the Lottery and bury the Cash? Where did she get the cash? Did she bring it with her, and if so, where did she get $80K of old currency? If she can bring money into the past, why could she not take the certificates into the future? She bought stock (who gives out stock certificates any more?), but they were gone from the box? Wouldn't they have to be there for her to get them in the future and save her Mother? She put the money in his bank account? Why and where did she get that money? Who removed the pics of her from his phone. If her, why did she put pics of them in the box? Clearly she existed, because the Bank Manager spoke to her. Some claim she saved him, but didn't his best friend tell him to take her to the Hospital? Not like she suggested going to the Hospital. If he dreamt the entire thing, then how did the best friend know about her when he woke up? ... and if we are not supposed to think about it, and it is a simple allegory, then would not saving someone life not alter the future, and wasn't the point she was not supposed to do that ... or was the point we are all meaningless ants? If the box was empty, and no cash added to his account, then she was a tumor induced dream that saved him; which would have been a better ending. Maybe the movie did not Test well, and they added the pics to the box to make it a happier ending, but ran out of ideas and money to tie the loose threads together?

Formula...INVERTED
jasweeney-8969114 June 2022
What if you took a plot device, and flipped it? Usually, the audience is in on the "secret", but in this movie, you only see the odd behavior - the back-story isn't known. Are the characters crazy? Hiding something? Or is the truth just hard to believe?

The writers throw in a "feel-good" ending, but at least they bothered to write one.

Hard-to-define movie - is it a rom-com? Sci-fi? A dream sequence? It's some of all of those, and none of any of them. Worth watching if you like off-beat stories with likeable, well-written characters.

ralphdaily17 June 2021
This movie is very sweet & very good. It is important to watch all the way to the very end. I don't know the lead actors but they carried the movie & had excellent chemistry. It was basically a fun, feel-good movie with a sci-fi twist.
