Gurinder Chadha is forging an indie Christmas movie about an Indian Ebenezer Scrooge set in London, financed by Zygi Kamasa’s new UK distributor True Brit.
The Bend It Like Beckham director has revealed the news in the past hour as she delivers evidence at the British Film and High-End Television inquiry, which starts today.
Chadha said the film is “fun, British and very close to Dickens’ original themes,” telling the story of an Indian Scrooge who votes for the Conservative Party and hates refugees.
She says financing is being provided through a combination of UK tax credits and Kamasa’s True Brit, which Deadline revealed launched late last year with backing from Three Six Zero. Its debut production is Danny Dyer-starrer Marching Powder.

As comedian Will Ferrell walked across the magnificent stage of The Kennedy Center to accept the greatest honor an America funny person can receive, The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, something happened that made us all remember why he is getting this prestigious honor. The award instantly slipped from Will’s hilarious fingers, shattering this legendary humorist’s bust all over the floor. An obvious gag, that was so damn fitting to what Will represents in the history of the art of doing silly stuff. Without breaking character for a second, Will hilariously tries to pick up the pieces as the world just sat back and laughed… but not laughing at him, we were laughing with him. The appeal of Will Ferrell comes from his innocent “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude that elevates simple stupid jokes to performance art. As Mr. Ferrell once said, “What I...

Social media users recently marveled that last month marked 20 years since three modern Christmas favorites — New Line’s Elf, Universal’s Love Actually and Miramax’s Bad Santa — all hit theaters within weeks of each other. Two decades later, you don’t need to feel like a cotton-headed ninny-muggins if you’re among those wondering why studios don’t release holiday theatrical offerings in the way they once did.
Although most Christmas films don’t tend to follow the path of, say, 1990’s Home Alone, which topped the domestic box office for a whopping 12 straight weeks, they had typically been a staple of the release calendar, with a handful of titles hitting theaters annually, as recently as the late 2010s. That list includes such 2016 theatrical offerings as Almost Christmas, Bad Santa 2, Office Christmas Party and Why Him?, followed by 2017’s Daddy’s Home 2, A Bad Moms Christmas and animated...

"I can't tell you how good it is... to have all of under the same roof again." Someone over at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) really loves mashups. This video plays like one of their montages during the Academy Awards show every year, but this one won't be airing during the broadcast in March. The Academy debuted a short "Happy Holidays from The Academy" mashup video on their YouTube featuring a medley of holiday classics. Aside from all the regulars, they've also got some oddball ones like Christmas with the Kranks, Jingle All the Way, Krampus, and The War With Grandpa. Plus classics like White Christmas, The Apartment, Meet Me in St Louis, and It's a Wonderful Life. It's just a nice celebration of the magic of the movies and how they are connected with the holiday spirit and holiday season. Christmas is just around the corner!

Judi Dench is opening up about the eye condition that is making it more difficult for her on the set and read her scripts.
“I mean I can’t see on a film set anymore,” Dench told The Daily Mirror’s Notebook in an interview. “And I can’t see to read. So I can’t see much. But you know you just deal with it. Get on.”
She continued, “It’s difficult for me if I have any length of a part. I haven’t yet found a way. Because I have so many friends who will teach me the script. But I have a photographic memory.”
Dench has a condition that is called age-related macular degeneration (Amd), which she was diagnosed with back in 2012. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, this condition affects the central vision but people rarely go completely blind from it.
At 88, Dench continues to work on acclaimed projects.

Exclusive: Apple Original Films and Skydance are continuing to build on their strong ties with another star-studded project as sources tell Deadline the two are partnering on the action-adventure tentpole Mayday with Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh starring and Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley directing. Sources tell Deadline, the script has been done for sometime, well before the Writers Strike started, but that deals, specifically for Reynolds and Branagh were still be worked out before Apple was able to board the project.
The action-adventure feature is based on an original pitch from Goldstein and Daley, who came to Skydance earlier this year with the idea and has been developing prior to Apple’s involvement. Once Reynolds showed interest in April to join the pic, the project started gaining serious momentum and while start date is still undetermined, seems likely this could the next thing Reynolds shoots. The logline is being kept under wraps.

Whenever I talk to people from Malaysia or Indonesia, they do not fail to mention that the mainstream cinema of their countries, and essentially the most popular movies, consist mostly of horror and romantic movies. These titles are very rarely exported, to festivals for example, but it seems that in recent years, Netflix, in its constant search for context, has decided to pick up a number, thus allowing them to reach an international audience. Perhaps the reason is the success of directors like Joko Anwar, who has managed to raise the horror genre to rather high levels. Ruben Adrian attempts to do something similar with “Spirited”, by mixing horror with fantasy, in a combination that is quite popular nowadays.

Exclusive: Will Ferrell is in huddling to star as the NFL’s John Madden in Madden, a theatrical feature to be directed for Amazon/MGM by five-time Oscar nominee David O. Russell (American Hustle), multiple sources tell Deadline.
Amazon had no comment.
The project has been percolating for some time. It is based on a Black List script by Cambron Clark, and Russell had been doing a rewrite when everything stopped with the writer’s strike.
A Prime Video Sports Original, Madden tells the story of one of the larger-than-life personalities to grace an NFL sideline. All Madden ever wanted was to be a head coach and he was one of the best ever. After winning the Super Bowl, the stress of the job began to destroy him. It forced him away from his dream job, and the film focuses on his friendship with Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, and...

Ryan Reynolds has starred in several big-budget movies for Netflix, including “6 Underground”, “Red Notice” and “The Adam Project”, in addition to the holiday musical “Spirited” for Apple TV+.
Despite that prodigious output, Reynolds’ streaming movies have eluded director Quentin Tarantino, who took a shot at the “Deadpool” star in a recent interview with Deadline.
The director of such acclaimed features as “Pulp Fiction” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” has long proclaimed to be no fan of movies produced for streaming services, used Reynolds as an example.

Horror and fantasy fiction are rare-cross breeds. It is only occasionally that we come across a decent film or television show, for this genre has always been tricky to crack. Spirited or Jagat Arwah lets us into the life of a young boy who is about to discover a potentially life-altering secret. Will the boy be ready to take on the adventure?
Jagat Arwah begins with a certain gentleman entering a mansion, and it is pitch dark inside, which proves no one has lived in this place for a while. The man walks towards a door, and by the looks of it, he is clearly on the lookout for something. It is not revealed who the man is or why he is here. He opens the door to a room to see a large object being covered by a cloth. Curious to see what the object is, he removes the cloth.

Horror fantasy fiction can be considered campy because, after a point, one does indulge more in the production, the hammy acting, and the weird direction of the film rather than the story. Most of the time, these films have a predictable story that ends the same way. There are not many layers or complexities that can be explored when it comes to this genre unless there is a genuine amount of time invested in developing a good story and screenplay. Spirited or Jagat Arwah, the Indonesian name of the film, is all about a young boy discovering the history of his family and ever since then, he has been pushing himself to pursue the legacy that has been left behind by his father. Will the boy abandon his family’s legacy or fulfill the path that has been chosen only for him? Released on September 29, 2022, and directed by Ruben Adrian,...

Legendary Entertainment is teaming up with Ryan Reynolds' production company Maximum Effort for the live-action/CGI-hybrid effort "Animal Friends." Who are these animal friends? What form will this combination of live-action and animation take? Well, that's all being kept under wraps for now, with the project remaining somewhat of a mystery beyond cast and crew announcements.
As Deadline reports, Reynolds is set to star in the upcoming movie, alongside Jason Momoa, Vince Vaughn, and Aubrey Plaza. "Animal Friends" will be helmed by Emmy-winning director Peter Atencio, who also directed Legendary's "The Machine" — a big screen adaptation of comedian Bert Kreischer's infamous summer spent abroad in Russia, where he somehow managed to befriend the mafia.

Since the two met on set of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, they’ve grown to become close friends, giving fans countless reasons to laugh as their beef continues to escalate to date.
According to Jackman, here’s how the pair’s online flame war began.

Ryan Reynolds is investing in his roots.
Maximum Effort, the production and advertising company Reynolds co-founded and leads with his business partner George Dewey, is part of an ownership group creating a 1.2 million-square-foot studio in Markham, Ontario. Developers say this will be Canada’s largest film and TV production hub.
At Question Period, Ontario’s minister of tourism, culture and sport Neil Lumsden said, “There is a very large—might I say ‘massive’—production studio being built, 1.2 million square feet, in Markham, Ontario. It’s being done by a gentleman who grew up in Canada and who is a star in the film industry: Ryan Reynolds.”
He added, “Let me tell you: 2022 was the best year ever. Hard to believe, but that goes to show you what a great industry it is. It is thriving… I don’t like to say numbers but I will say it’s over $3 billion back into the economy.
