Pleasant Surprise
CoreyRuehling16 May 2020
First off, to refute another review on here, you CAN shoot Terminators in the game. And you kind of have to, unless you're stockpiling explosives. That reviewer clearly didn't play much of the game.

When I heard that Teyon, developer of the not-so-great Rambo video game, had acquired the license to create a Terminator game, I prepared for a similar experience; an on-the-rails shooter with ugly visuals and chock full of voice clips from the movies. However, this game turned out much better, and honestly, I enjoyed it much more than Terminator: Dark Fate, the franchise's most recent film.

The game's story puts you in the shoes of a Resistance member in the midst of the war against Skynet, the very war seen in a few scenes of the first two Terminator films. And not to mention, this game actually ties directly into the plots of those films and is full of references to them, so one can tell that this game was indeed created by fans of the films. But overall, the plot here was nothing amazing, but enjoyable for Terminator fans. While some would say it's a short game (took me about 8 hours total, including side content), but I felt it was just the right length.

The voice acting is okay, I suppose. There aren't any standout performances, but there also weren't any that made me cringe. The graphics aren't anything to write home about, but they're a major improvement over Rambo's. There aren't any celebrity likenesses used in this game, so the "that looks nothing like Stallone" issue Rambo had was avoided.

As for the gameplay, it's pretty much standard-fare first-person-shooter. It's not a broken buggy mess or anything, but it can get pretty repetitive and monotonous, which I suppose is the main reason I didn't rate it much higher. That, and it's not particularly amazing on any fronts, aside from the fact that it is much, much better than their previous attempt at a film license. Speaking of that, I assume Teyon will do another film license next... I'll hope for RoboCop.

A Loving Fanservice Title
NGinAndTonic4 May 2021
First off, to the guy who gave a low score because you "Can't shoot T-800's", you're a liar. Stop making stuff up to try and sway people from buying the game because your lazy, dumbass didn't go further than the first ten minutes.

On to the game itself, this feels like a true proper Future War based Terminator property. Teyon are obviously fans of the original movies; what with the callbacks, references, attention to detail and overall presentation. The T-1000 Easter Egg was where I decided I loved this game.

It is just a generic FPS Game by today's standards, but considering the low advertising they had - they clearly put that money into their already limited budget - it can be excused. Basically, it's a Terminator game that feels like a true sequel as opposed to the sequels we've actually gotten.

Generic, monotonous shooting moments which hide a project doused in Fanservice and a true passion. Is it worth it? For a sale price absolutely.

The BEST Terminator game and a very good FPS.
vamanatds22 February 2021
This is easily the best Terminator game ever, at last a good Terminator game.., and a very good FPS in general.

The atmosphere and action is really superb, and you think that you are watching and actively taking part in the T1 or T2 movies.

The music and sounds are perfect, so 80s.., especially the main menu theme, except for the dialogs which sometimes sound a bit strange and like somebody is just reading them in a room, and the graphics although not top are quite good, with nice colors and sceneries and set you very well in the mood of the after Judgement Day War..

The story is very believable and interesting with plenty of action all the time. The game also has some RPG elements, you collect stuff, improve your weapons, abilities, craft items etc.

Overall a very good action FPS and by far the best Terminator game ever..till now.

Recommended to everyone and STRONGLY recommended to ALL Terminator fans, this is a must have.

I would even say that so far for me the Terminator Universe should comprise only of T1, T2, Terminator Salvation & this game!, Terminator Resistance.

A surprisingly good Terminator game from the makers of the atrocious Rambo game
Alfabeta22 November 2019
While Rambo: The Video Game, an arcade rail shooter and literal rethread of the first three Rambo films, will always be infamous as one of the most horrifically bad movie-based video games in history (no hyperbole there), its developer, Polish Studio Teyon, may still have a bright future ahead of them since they have now proved with their new Terminator game that they do actually have some talent for making good games as well.

In all honesty, Terminator: Resistance is a decent but average game. However, the fact that Terminator games haven't been good at all since the late 90s makes this okay game such a pleasant surprise that, at least in the eyes of the fans, it may as well be a 'triple A' Terminator game.

What's good about it? The story more or less works, the characters are not too unmemorable, the few choices in the game do have consequences, the action is serviceable, and the level design is not all that bad either.

What's bad about it? The limited budget occasionally shows when it comes to the graphics (most characters' faces look bad as if they come from a game from some previous generation console), the acting is often bad (even the main character is voiced poorly), the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion-like dialogue can get tiresome, and there is no variety when it comes to the gameplay (what you see is what you get). However, the graphics are fine for the most part, the voice actors who are good carry the game successfully, the dialogues do make the otherwise bland-looking characters somewhat interesting, and there is still more variety here than in any other Terminator game in recent memory.

What's neither here nor there? The game contains up to two short-ish sex scenes (full first person sex scenes with strategically covered nudity) if the player (the protagonist is a guy) chooses to take that route with two female side-characters.

Bottom line? All fans of either The Terminator franchise or Sci-Fi action in general should check this game out. If it makes them some money, maybe the game studio's next project will be a real classic considering what a leap forward this game is compared to the justifiably maligned so-incredibly-bad-it's-almost-good Rambo game.

A Mediocre Game with Alot Of Heart
cammyd-304658 July 2022
Teyon, a company infamous for a terrible Rambo game has been handed the rights and opportunity to make another licensed game about an 80s movie franchise. However this time, they've managed to keep it from being another disaster like Rambo.

Terminator: Resistance is above all else, is a love letter to the Terminator franchise, with nods to all the movies backed by amazing sound design and model work in game to really sell that "future" war setting the game takes place in and honestly Teyon should be congratulated on the jumping up of quality from previous games.

What this game gets right is the environmental design and look and feel of the war torn "Future" of the Terminator franchise. Models of the titular Terminators also look fantastic, with them looking almost 1:1 with the movies. The music too is very inline with the original movie with heavy synthesisers in your ears as your hiding from a T-800 as its stomps ever closer to where you are. Plus visually during the night sections, this game looks down right amazing when you see tons of laser fire lighting up the environment as you see the glowing red eyes of your metallic foes.

Missions never felt boring or repetitive, say for the amount of outposts one can destroy that are just a way to earn more XP as side missions. Some characters also felt very inline with how the movies told us humanity had become in these dark time, with a cast of characters that give great insights into just how terrible life truly is now. The story is also really simple to follow, if not a little meh, but it's honestly refreshing to have a game that doesn't blow smoke up its windpipe by trying and failing to tell a "Complex" story and gives a very simple to follow one.

Whilst the highs of Resistance are really good, the medium to bad areas of this game are something to be desired. If you put a gun to my head and asked me to describe this game I'd have to say it feels like "A remaster to an early 2000s obscure FPS that never happened." The look and feel of the game screams classic FPS games, where you are plotted into a giant area to complete objectives, but feels very isolated and lonely due to being surrounded by enemies, and allies really only appear in cutscenes or during scripted missions. There's also this weird indescribable feeling of stiffness while playing the game, where it sometimes feels outdated.

Some performances also felt off, the main voice actor for the main character sometimes sounds like he's phoning it in, thankfully most of the other cast put in a decent performance that doesn't distract you.

Weapons are also very hit and miss, where a-lot of them you don't really get a great sense of their weight or true firepower. Like how when holding a standard Assault rifle, it feels more like a P-Shooter with how little presents it has. Comparing those weapons to later laser weapons, at a certain part in the game you'll come across laser weapon ammo so much that you'll abandon conventional weapons at the drop of a hat. Now the problem here isn't that there's too much laser ammo, its the fact that later on you are coming up against different classes of Terminator, which can only be stopped with laser weapons, and the normal guns are meant for the smaller robots that attack you, which creates this sense that one class of weapons is just not worth it anymore.

The game also tries to implement a skill tree system that honestly doesn't feel all too needed. I get its meant to help you believe you are turning into the best soldier in the resistance, but I feel if they focused more on the gunplay instead of a skill tree than the game could of been improved.

Glitches wise I ran into several during my play-through. One being AI either becoming brain dead, standing still allowing me to thrash them, or somehow knowing where I was behind walls or cover they couldn't possibly see through leading to frustration as Terminators wipe the floor with you early game and having 4 pounce on you just from loading a quick save isn't the best feeling.

Overall, this game has flaws, jank and other words the thesaurus spits at me, but I have to take a knee to all of that really and congratulate Teyon for making a decent game. These guys aren't triple A studio's levels of talent, and neither do they have funding like that, so to produce a product like this is amazing to see. I only wish to see this company go bigger and better with their new Robocop game. And hopefully they can learn from their mistakes and become a household name in coming years.

Teyon's love letter to the Terminator franchise.
angiris17 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is what we've been asking for for years, hoped for on the big screen in Hollywood, and thought we'd get with Dark Fate... but everyone, including Cameron himself got it wrong.

And along comes smaller dev Teyon and knocks it right out the freaking park 1st try.

I was worried about this when I saw the developer and their track record, but they proved that they know their stuff, they had a real love for this franchise and the final result of blood, sweat, metal and tears is the BEST terminator game we have ever gotten. Of which we have far too few, yes.

  • Pros

We get fun combat, surprisingly decent graphics even with the lower budget which is fine because graphics DO NOT make a good game. Something I believe the game critics have forgotten all about these days...

We got lots of customization, gun upgrades, fan service weaponry, good crafting, exploration, small RPG dialog sequences that allow you to interact with characters in both small and large ways. We got sex scenes as well which took me completely by surprise because I had no idea how deep they'd go with their story aspect.

Again, this game just came out of nowhere and I ended up feeling like I was playing a Metro in the Terminator universe. Its so freaking great. The voice acting is quite good, map design is very open and you can go about handling enemies in a variety of ways that all work well and aren't feeling generic.

Why is this? Because if you play on extreme difficulty, which true fans will !, those T-800's will 1 shot you sometimes unless you use cover and dont go full Rambo, which is very tempting nonetheless.

You can place mines, distraction gadgets, use various grenades, stimpaks, upgrade guns, use normal projectile types or laser types and even build tech knives you can sneak up behind terminators with and 1 shot them with a cool stab to the neck ( mo-cap ofc) There are plenty of save stations, crafting stations and shops in camps that never make you feel like you're in dire need to make space for your inventory, with exception to larger weapons. But economically you will never run into issues here. Scavenging is very lucrative, crafting is good and rewarding and its fun too because as your economy builds and scavenging might be a bit tiresome sometimes, you can rely more on the store to buy ammo or bombs and of course loot ammo from Terminators you kill.

The balance is really great and has you avoid being stuck with only 1 replenishment system. The devs want to tell a cool story and engage us, not put us through a grind and that I thank them for.

You also have a cool skill system. Upgrade bagspace, hacking, crafting, weaponry damage, and more. And the final upgrades in these trees come with additional benefits like fun buffs to your overall performance in that specific area. For instance (Damage tree buffs your critical damage and allows you to use terminator weapons.)

Its fun, not repetative at all, and its scary too because the enemies are pretty nasty with some of their abilities and although the accuracy can appear a bit random at times, make no mistake. If you stand infront of a T-800 he will kill you. Ain't no QTE to save you from a grab. He will annihilate you.

And I love that. The terminators feel scary. And the music enhances this by being so absolutely true to T1 and T2. that dark, gritty metallic sounds that inspires dread and hope at the same time.

You are in the Future War. And its simply outstanding.

  • Few Cons

This is minor stuff that didn't ruin my experience but was still noticable. It would've been nice with a FOV-slider (Total Biscuit is screaming loudly somewhere) It would've been nice with Terminators being more tanky even on higher difficulty. Its really great to feel powerful and our weapons are awesome. But once I get a sniper rifle and upgrade it with damage bonuses or skill points that buff critical damage by 100 %, I'm 1 shotting terminators way too easily.

It might be intended, but it does make the battle against them less scary. So perhaps a fix to this could be not changing the rifle or damage but making the ammunition for the rifle far more scarce or something. Especially considering the laser ammunition is extremely plentiful even on max difficulty.

But this wont be an issue for all people. Some enjoy being very strong and fight back after a hard start. You got that here.

And unlike hack critics who slam this fantastic game simply for not having next gen graphics, I wont place the lesser graphics as a con here because in my book, it has always, and will always go like this:

"Gameplay > Graphics"

Every time. And that is what Terminator Resistance is. A gem, a love letter to Terminator fandom, a wonderful story, great interaction, fun combat, awesome skill system and crafting, refreshing RPG dialog and decisions and scary terminators that make you feel like you're genuinely being hunted for extermination. Fabulous music, tried and true to the original Terminator movies and really well written characters.

It feels like a war for survival. And you are doing your part, working with your friends and John Connor to win.

9 out of 10. A damn good ride, well worth the money and time invested. Thank you, Teyon for keeping these types of games alive, I hope we get a sequel or at least DLC.

I want to see a terminator movie made starring the plot and characters from this game. Take notes, Hollywood. Or rather, just give Teyon the movie rights since they managed to create a genuine success story here with a lower budget. Contrary to 200 million dollar Dark Fate that chose to alienate the fandom instead.

But not this game & dev. Well done, Teyon. Very very well done. Thank you for that.

And btw, cool that you included the little Rambo reference in one of the cutscenes, making a bit of fun of yourself in the process. You guys & gals earned my respect.

Not a game worthy of the Terminator franchise
PenetratorGod3 February 2024
Despite being made with Unreal Engine 4, it has very bad looking graphics. There are many games made with Unreal Engine 3 that look much better. The facial animations make the game look like it was released in 2009, not 2019. As for its main story and DLC, the connection between them is ridiculous.

It would have made much more sense to have this DLC playable while playing during the main story. The idea of a DLC that starts from the middle of the game again after finishing the main game doesn't make much sense. On the other hand, the story in general is not very good. There's nothing special about the DLC.

You do almost the same things you did during the main story missions. Some scenes have been added to help us connect more with the main character, but the acting is very bad and the events don't make much sense. The main character and all the other NPCs we encounter are extremely boring and poorly voiced.

The story didn't make me care about any of the people we were fighting to survive together. Then suddenly it killed them all as if I had decided it. There are a lot of people around you, but the game always wants you to be the hero. You're constantly thrown into dangers almost alone, and after a certain point it forces you into stealth.

I don't like stealth mechanics, so this was very tiring. There are two female characters that we can have romantic relationships with and those scenes were pretty mediocre. It would have been better if they weren't added at all. If you're going to censor the whole thing, I don't understand why they even bothered to add a sex scene in the first place. They placed a lot of collectible items around, but you never need more than half of them during the game.

I hated the side quests in the game, they were repetitive content made up to extend the gameplay. Most of them were really annoying. Finally, Terminator: Resistance's weakest point is that it creates the illusion that we have a choice. It's made to look like an RPG, but from beginning to end, the choices don't make any sense. It is completely linear, so it would have been much better if they reflected the story like Call of Duty.

As a result, I think it is an average game. It can only be played if you have free time.

Excellent Game- Ignore the haters. Honestly.
mez33313 January 2022
As someone who has been playing games like Half Life, Tomb Raider etc for years now I am not new to the world of first- person shooters. I love the Terminator movies and this game, also the DLC, definitely do them justice.

Firstly, the atmosphere is amazing. Scary. I like the fact that in the first part of the game you have to hide from the Terminators to progress. You're on the edge.

Secondly, the music is super. Adds "creepiness" and tension to the atmosphere of the game play.

As for the quality of the gaming itself- design, weapons etc- there is absolutely nothing to complain about.

I've played this game several times now and am not tired of it.

I HOPE THEY WILL DO ANOTHER!!

Most underrated game of 2019
Pepe-arbiter19 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Listen, I did not expect to like a game from the makers of the legendarily atrocious Rambo video game this much. It's seriously the best Terminator game I believe we will ever get. Superb graphics, great controls, well written story with likable characters, perfect aesthetics that captures the feel of the future sections from T1 and T2 perfectly. The Fallout-esque rpg mechanics are well handled and I love the fact they have branching narrative paths with multiple endings. Your choices in this game do matter, and I always appreciate that.

The only problems I have with the game are that the enemy are sometimes not that bright, but then again they're robots, and while the romance options are handled quite well, the "romance scene" is kinda awkward animation wise even if I appreciate the idea and most of the execution behind it.

Fallout meets Mass Effect meets Call Of Duty with a little bit of Far Cry thrown in for good measure: Terminator Resistance is a superb AA title that was wrongfully overlooked I can endorse highly.

Finally a good terminator movie game
robbyedd2 January 2021
I've been a fan of the terminator franchise since I watched terminator when I was a kid in the 80s number 1 being my favourite dark gritty story, so finally playing a game that puts me in that world creating the feel of what made t1 and t2 so good is a real achievement if you take the game what it is a terminator game for terminator fans yes it feels a little clunky in the controls but it's not aaa game an there is a minor niggle here and there but for people who have been wanting a good terminator game for years after playing endless bad ones we finally got one a good one so grab your pipe bombs and plasma rifle kick back and enjoy, for the hate this game gets I conclude the haters weren't fans of the films probably to young to get what this game and the films are so ignore them, this games for fans of terminator not battle royal mmo kids

Perfectly captures the Future War from Terminator 1 and 2
cnfranco22 July 2020
Bought this game on sale ($19) and greatly enjoyed it. The people at Teyon clearly love the first 2 Terminator films and have learned from their previous game flops. Animations are a bit stiff (for faces and hands) and the texture fidelity isn't the best, but the plasma guns feel so good to shoot.

If you're a fan of the first 2 movies, you enjoy if
tdavidson-608226 May 2021
It's not the prettiest game but it's so much fun to play and good story to boot. A lot of nice nods to the movies as well scattered throughout the game. I found myself getting goosebumps often from things that I found, sound and music I heard and much more. The game also plays very similarly to fallout 3/4. Can't recommend it enough. Hats off to the developers.
