Some shows are big cultural hits and juggernauts, and some quietly go on season after season; maybe not a huge critical giant, but there are enough ardent fans to justify their existence. And that’s probably where Apple TV+’s “Trying,” a heartwarming British comedy television series created by Andy Wolton (“The Amazing World of Gumball”), lands; it has its fans, and it keeps successfully chugging along, though to be fair, it does have its U.K.

When last we saw Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) in the Apple TV+ comedy series “Trying,” the couple was trying to pull off a reverse shotgun wedding — well, sort of. The long-term partners decided they finally wanted to get married, but rather than get hitched before people knew they were pregnant, they wanted to tie the knot before their kids were taken away from them. Luckily, Nikki and Jason won their court case against their adopted children’s biological grandmother, and with that out of the way, all their worries were over.
Ok, not quite. “Trying” takes a warts-and-all approach to parenthood (if not life in general), so there will always be concerns, big and small, for the family to deal with — the key is sticking together, no matter how trying things get. Season 4 brings a fresh set of family matters, as the story jumps six years into...

There’s a question the trio of podcasters at the center of the darkly comedic thriller Bodkinask themselves: “How much of this is true, and how much is a story?” As series creator Jez Scharf tells Tudum, “Once you start asking that question, all of reality falls apart.”
Bodkin, which premieres May 9, stars Will Forte (Nebraska), Siobhán Cullen (The Dry), and Robyn Cara (Trying) as a motley crew of podcasters investigating the nefarious goings-on that swirl beneath the seemingly idyllic veneer of the titular small town in Ireland, where several mysterious disappearances occurred 25 years ago.
In their attempt to uncover the truth about the people lost during the town’s annual Samhain celebration — a traditional Gaelic fall festival that celebrates the end of the harvest season and the longer, darker days to come — our heroes realize Bodkin might be small, but it holds some very big secrets. As...

The delightful comedy on Apple TV Plus, Trying, is back for Season 4 after a nearly two-year hiatus. Once more, six years after our last visit, this endearing program—one of the best comedies on television, in our opinion—will outline the next phase of Nikki and Jason’s journey as adoptive parents.
Apple did indeed confirm that the next chapter takes place after a six-year time jump when they unveiled our first look at the new series.
Although Nikki and Jason have at last created the family they have always desired, they now face a new obstacle: raising teenagers.
Apple hinted that Nikki and Jason would be facing their toughest obstacle to date in the upcoming series: teenagers, when they unveiled the first-look photos recently.

It’s rare to find a truly endearing comedy that deals well with the nuances of parenting and deftly handles dramatic moments in a compelling way. I’d argue there are two vastly underappreciated such shows, Trying from Apple TV+ and Breeders from FX. The former was renewed for a fourth season almost a year ago, and the fourth and final season of the latter is officially here. If you haven’t seen either, now is the time to check them out, and I would highly recommend starting with the lovely Breeders, which you can find on Hulu.

The theatrical requirements for movies vying for the Oscars top prize are getting a little tougher.
Starting with the 97th Academy Awards in 2025, best picture hopefuls will have to spend more time in theaters to qualify for film’s top prize. The changes, announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this week, come after three years of adjusted release standards due to the pandemic.
On top of the current one week “qualifying run” in one of six U.S cities — New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco or Miami — best picture contenders would now must also now play for an additional seven days in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets. Additionally, there’s several other new rules about when the movies must play in theaters.

Welcome to the Gayle show! On Monday, the “Abcdefu” singer announced her fall Scared and Trying Tour — her first time on the road on her own after opening for both Taylor Swift and Pink in the last few months.
In an Instagram post, Gayle said opening for both stars was some of “the most exciting and terrifying moments of my life” and that she’d be so scared to get on stage that she’d get nauseous before performing. “But no matter how I felt, I would try and do it anyway,...

“The English” is hoping for a successful Emmys season coming up, with the show on the precipice for a Best Limited Series bid as well as a Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor nomination for Chaske Spencer, while Emily Blunt is odds-on to be cited in the lead actress category. But they may be joined by the ever-reliable supporting player Rafe Spall, who emerged from Amazon Prime Video’s sweeping western series as one of the best things about it — if not the best.
“The English,” by creator Hugo Blick, follows Blunt as Lady Cornelia Locke, who is on the hunt for revenge in a search for the man responsible for her son’s death. Along the way, she meets Spencer’s Eli Whipp/Wounded Wolf, who is on a quest of his own — to claim back the land he is owed for his service in the US Army. The...

Joy Oladokun recently started re-watching Nashville, the soapy TV series centered on country music dreams and drama that helped usher in a wave of big change in the Tennessee capital. She had been thinking about her own place in Nashville — mainly, if she should stay as the state becomes increasingly hostile to marginalized people — and feeling depressed about the way the town’s music industry fosters Olympic levels of jealousy for anyone who catches a break.

Crime dramas are rarely revolutionary – we often watch them because they’re comfortingly formulaic – but every so often you get a gem that changes the game. We saw it with Line of Duty, Happy Valley, and Luther – and now Blue Lights is here to make you sit up, stop scrolling and get invested.
What the detectives from the above shows all have in common is experience, but Blue Lights focusses on three fresh-faced officers on probation in Belfast, Northern Ireland’s most dangerous city. Annie (Katherine Devlin) is scrappy and impetuous, Tommy (Nathan Braniff) is bookish and a terrible shot, and Grace (played by Trying’s Sian Brooke) is naively optimistic about making a difference despite having joined the force in her forties after a career as a social worker.
The good news is that what they lack in policing potential, they make up for in instant likeability, and this...

Despite writing some of their generation’s biggest hits, Lynyrd Skynyrd never had a song reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Instead, the band that popularized southern rock plateaued at No. 8 after tragedy interrupted their climb up the charts. Yet, despite their struggles, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music represents a noteworthy evolution in the rock genre.
‘Sweet Home Alabama’ is the only Lynyrd Skynyrd to crack the Billboard Top 10
Released in 1974 on their second album, “Sweet Home Alabama” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for 17 weeks. Despite none of them being from Alabama, it was the band’s most successful song.
Before his unexpected death on March 5, 2023, guitarist Gary Rossington spoke to Garden & Gun about how the band came up with the hit song.

The hilarious and heartwarming crime film "True Romance" would not be the same without Patricia Arquette playing the ditzy and lovable Alabama Worley. Arquette went on to earn an Academy Award decades later, but when "True Romance" was released in 1993, it was a major breakout role for the actress, still in the early stages of her career.
The film gained a lot of critical and audience acclaim, but it also attracted a lot of controversy. Some of the edgier moments of the movie actually made Arquette highly uncomfortable at the time. Arquette thoroughly sympathized with her "True Romance" character, but she had trouble relating to Alabama.
"I struggled with playing her," the actress admitted to The Independent. "She's so supportive, even of things that are kind of shocking. Her boyfriend murders someone and she's still like... yeah!"

While sitting down with Esquire for an episode of “Explain This”, Kutcher recounted a time when he and his wife Mila Kunis attended a karaoke party, hosted by their neighbour who is an “extraordinarily well known singer.”

“This kid gets up and he does this like Abba song. I’m like, ‘Oh my God, It’s like bananas’,” Kutcher recalled his reaction to the guest’s “really good” performance.
“So, the kid gets off stage and Mila and I go up to him and we’re like, ‘Man, I gotta tell you something. You’re like a karaoke ringer, you’re really good, like really good’,” the actor continued. “And he’s like, ‘Thanks man,...

Superstore ended in 2021 after six seasons. Fans were sad to see the series go and certainly believed that the employees of Cloud 9 had more stories to tell. At least one cast member agrees. Jon Barinholtz, the actor who portrayed Marcus White in the series, would be onboard for a Superstore reunion. The beloved NBC show still has fans.
Why was ‘Superstore’ canceled?
In 2020, NBC shocked Superstore fans when it announced that season 6 would be the series’ last. The cancelation came as a big surprise. Superstore had done fairly well for NBC, and fans were still attracted to the show week after week.
While NBC never gave a definitive reason for the cancelation, industry experts are pretty certain America Ferrera’s decision to leave the series greatly impacted when and where it ended. According to Newsweek, Ferrera’s departure signaled to NBC that it was time to wrap things up.

Vera really likes to keep us waiting. Series 11 of this beloved British detective series began broadcasting back in summer 2021, and after four episodes were released between then and January 2022, there’s been a year-long unexplained wait for the last two feature-length episodes of the series, which finally began airing on ITV1 on Sunday 15th January.
But like buses, you wait for one series of Vera and two arrive at once, as straight after Series 11 finishes we’ll be getting four more weekly episodes making up Series 12 as well, starting on 29th January.
Not only that, there’s another Vera instalment, The Rising Tide, on the way later this year, based on Ann Cleeves’s latest Vera novel of the same name.
So what can we expect from the upcoming episodes of Vera? More gruesome murders, of course, and more stunning Northumberland scenery, but there’s also going to be more...

Despite any longevity and adaptability they may have, every artist is inevitably forever associated with a particular time. In terms of movie directors, there exists an association between, for instance, Jean-Luc Godard and the 1960s, or Steven Spielberg and the 1980s, and so on.
In that way, Quentin Tarantino is inexorably tied to the 1990s, with his films "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" impacting pop culture on a seismic level. As these things usually happen, this was entirely by chance and not design; one of the joys of Tarantino's work as a filmmaker is that his numerous references to other films, TV shows and music are purely based around his own likes rather than some attempt to be hip and up-to-the-minute.
That wasn't always the case, however. One of the two screenplays the struggling young writer first wrote was "True Romance," a script that featured as many character quirks...
