Free from theatrical grouping and posture-taking

This is a picture reproducing Colonial village life. It is winter, with a heavy snow on the ground. The first scenes are in or near a school, which with the quaint costumes of the master and pupils, is interesting. The contest between the school master and his high- spirited girl pupil has a human touch that will hold the interest of the audience. As the story proceeds, showing first how the master relents, after punishing the refractory pupil, and then how the girl, at first bitterly proud, later humbles herself, the interest increases. Here is a reasonable human story, well handled by both author and producer, and well photographed. The action is restrained and free from that bane of many a picture, theatrical grouping and posture-taking. This picture looks, in many of its scenes, like life. - The Moving Picture World, May 13, 1911
