Why is there so many bad reviews?

I had low expectations for the show after I read the many negative and low rating reviews on IMDb. But after watching the first 3 episode I'm surprised and confused why so many people dislike the episodes. I don't find the episodes slow paced, and I like how the audience follow different people with different lives. Maybe a lot of people expected a action packed alien-invasion series, and the series is not that. But it keeps you on your toes wondering what the creature is and why they are here. The episodes gives the audiences just enough information and hints to keep you interested and desperate to watch more.

Great show, good acting and interesting, loveable (and hateable) characters.

Give it a shot and forget the reviews and be the judge yourself.

So far I'm having a lot of trouble connecting to any of the main characters. Granted, this is only ep #1, but so far, no good. I will watch ep #2, based solely on the strength of Sam Neill being in it, because he's typically an excellent actor, but I'm not too hopeful.

The Whining

Once again Americans whine. If there were no character development, they'd whine about how they don't care about the characters because we know nothing about them.

There is character development, so they whine about wasted family drama, somehow forgetting they probably have 3 streaming services. Five prime channels and 800 network channels.

This is a slow burn.

Meanwhile I'm enjoying the buildup and the mystery.

This is not another transformers style shoot 'em up where the viewer is led through the shallow plot in a universal spectator no-thinking plot. Instead we have ordinary characters who have no idea what is happening. The first person viewpoint is what an ordinary person would see in such circumstances, without the benefits of experts explaining each step.

How do the storylines link their characters together? Why is the planet under attack? How much of the world is involved?

I want more.

I'm not a fan of having to read during parts of episode. I like having characters from around the world and seeing their life's before the invasion. Lots of mystery or mysteries. Spoiler alert: Already lost a character. Sorry if I ruined that for anyone.

I liked most of the episode, but something just doesn't seem good. Or as planned.

The script with the wife and husband from NY is so bad, didn't have feelings with these characters not like the sheriff part or the japanese one.

The first episode was good and the best part was Sam Neill but I guess the producers only had enough Sam Neill money for one episode since he bites it at the end of episode one. I like the diversity of the characters and how they are developing them which a lot of users want to hurry up and get to the action scenes fighting aliens with ban bang shootouts and explosions.

Really enjoyed the first episode of this series. It really pulled you in without revealing too much about anything. Only reason I'm rating this episode a 7 is because I don't know much about it yet but it had me engaged enough to want to keep going.

Also, I was COMPLETELY Shocked with Sam Neill's death. I was so convinced he was going to be the hero of the show. Nope! Just when he gives his speech about a life with no purpose until now, you think it's the start of his heroes journey and *bam* he's done just seconds before the credits roll.

Great start!! Apple TV is really coming out the gate with all these winning shows!

So far and previews is awesome.have watched other thinhs in the past and have always been good and wasy to get to thnak sfor making it easy to wtach. The other thing is it allows you to watch for free and that makes a big dofference to someone on tight buget.

One of the least exciting pilots in the history of science fiction. Came for the aliens, left cause of boring pointless dialogues and family melodrama.

Is this even sci-fi? I don't think so.

Tremendous special effects and cinematography.

An absolutely haunting score by Max Richter.

Great writing.

Great acting.

Some shockingly dramatic scenes both on and off the Earth!

Wow!

Hope the rest of the series is as good as the opening episode!

Is it so hard to find a writer who can write characters I care about? I was really looking forward to this show, and now I don't want to waste my time on it.

They spend most of the episode on family drama and I just sat bored, asking what this has to do with the plot, and why I should care.... with one of the worthless plot points looking like an ad for what you can do with Apple products.

I'd like the hour of my life back. I'll watch a few more episodes to see if it improves, but I'm not looking forward to it.

Not surprised AppleTV refused to let critics see this before it aired.

When a distributor refuses to let critics see a film or series before release this means they know they have a dog on their hands. And that is the case here. The character development is flat, the pacing is mind numbing, the dialogue is not mostly clichés but all clichés. I saw all three episodes released today and they were shockingly bad.

I'm hooked after 3 shows. Its enthralling how the show pans to different parts of the globe with different characters and situations.

If you don't like it after 2 episodes please give it a chance.

I was shocked as heck when Sam Neil's character died, I honestly thought he was going to be the main guy and the hero. This show diverse, it's riveting and I hope it continues as such!

Boring and muddled

Very slow, muddled, soap-opera with just a very light sprinkling of sci-fi. There are several multiple storylines - which irritate because before any cohesive narrative can be established we jump to yet another set of characters. Nothing makes any sense - just a series of odd happenings. Mostly it's a bore to sit through. The characters are very oddly developed and the dialog is hard to hear and understand what on earth is going on. I might try the next two episodes to see if it improves but I do have my doubts ...

The Walking Unconscious

Most of the actors are barely maintaining consciousness. A wife finishes running, wonders around the house barely able to keep eyes open. The Japanese astronaut is the most sleepy, slow moving, least interested astronaut in the history of space. It's as if the entire cast is dealing with a carbon monoxide issue. I have watched a lot of TV and I am struggling to see how this made it past any review process. The intensity of everyone's drowsiness has to be intentional, but whatever they were going for, it makes for bad tv.

Another wasted opportunity.

I've watched first 3 episodes to give it a chance. This another miniseries that could easily be condensed into a decent 2 or 3 episodes instead of a plodding and padded 8, or God forbid, 10 boring hours, there are so many out there nowadays. Maybe it should've been a 2 hour movie. The first episode encapsulates the entertainment level. Sigh.

I thought this was gonna be an invasion show. It's a family drama. It's sooooo drawn out and boring, it's hard to stay awake. It better pick up soon or this show won't make it.

Couldn't be this slow. Watched first episode which only described the main characters. A lot of shows use flashbacks to set up current storyline. I see characters that are not interesting. They may be later, but the idea is to capture the interest of the viewers. Spielberg is probably sleeping through this, if he bothers with it.

Very poor from Apple which has limited content anyway. Another annoying thing is they release content weekly like old TV once our free 1 year runs out because we bought an iPhone we won't be renewing. This is almost as bad as the BBC. Will just stick with Netflix and Amazon Prime.

It's a beautiful show, but the episode needs to get to the actual invasion a whole lot faster. I recommend watching the desert scene before the title intro and then just skipping to the 46th minute.

I'm going to give the second episode a chance because I like sci-fi stories. I hope it has more action and develops the characters along the way instead of spending so much time on stereotypical tropes like retiring sheriff, jilted spouse, smart scientist, and gifted "special" child.

Pros for the episode are the camera work, visuals, and sound editing. Again, there's potential (I think) if you can get through the first 45 minutes.

Terrible kid actors. Ridiculously writing in more political sewer trash politics. Subtitles didn't start until halfway through the Japanese sequence. Stereotypes all through the episode.

At least, I hope this series will bring me much pleasure, because this scheme of different stories told in parallel amazes me much. It seems to be very well done, with a terrific acting and story telling. You are literally stuck to this story. Sam Neill's character who seems to be present ONLY in this episode - I chedked on Imdb - surprised me too. So unusual. Maybe there will be more characters who will appear in further episodes, more stories. I will get back to this TV show. Science Fiction is not my stuff at all, but here I totally forget it. I only focus on the characters and their personal problems.
