A Christmas surprise.
doctorsmoothlove24 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Christmas 9 to 5" is an obscure Christmas film from Lifetime's 2019 holiday marathon. As of the time of this review, it doesn't even have its writer listed. It's a real shame too. This film is a lot better than many of the other films that network showed this year.

It's better because the script is takes risks that these kinds of stories usually do not. The central conflict between the heroine (played with enthusiasm by actor Tiya Sircar) and the hero (played flat by Joe Dinicol) occurs halfway through and the film attempts, thought not well. In many films like this, the central conflict is resolved in under ten minutes near the very end. The main characters magically become a couple. Here, the Dinicol feels justifiably upset when Sircar reveals that she is an undercover reporter working at his family's historic department store. They had plenty of romantic moments prior to the revelation.

The film has decent cinematography as well. The story largely takes place in a department store of which we actually see exterior shots. There is a boutique interior room that looks like a Red Light District rental booth. Also, the best shot occurs when he is leaving the bar and she is just heading out the door. It looks almost like a Christmas card.

After her cover is blown, Sircar begins making blog posts about the department store. Of course this drives in customers who weren't there in days prior. The story wraps itself up a little too quickly as is customary in this genre.

There's an old school quality to this film. It's as if the script was written and shelved for years before being made. Some cursory modern references aside, I feel like this film could have been released twenty years ago. The supporting performance by George Wendt as the manual elevator operator adds to this quality. His Santa Clause-esque quality adds charm without cringe.

I would enjoy seeing this film again despite its shortcomings. A solid effort all around.

Reporting Christmas
TheLittleSongbird20 October 2020
Although the concept for the story didn't sound anything innovative, something that one should never expect from Lifetime as you are nearly always going to be disappointed, part of me was intrigued by it as it did sound like potentially there could be things done differently to usual. As some may know already, this reviewer is somebody who has a big thing for good concepts (as well as good casts) and a big bugbear of mine is when they are squandered.

'Christmas 9 to 5' doesn't completely waste it, as despite my interest expectations were still not massive. At the same time, it doesn't fully explore it let alone exceed. It does try to do a few things differently, but none of them are executed well enough. As far as 2019 Lifetime Christmas films go, 'Christmas 9 to 5' is neither one of the best or worst and more a watchable middling effort that at the same time doesn't deserve obscurity status.

Shall start with the good. The production values are quite nice, some of the scenery being beautiful even. Regardless of questions about authenticity the film for me was easy on the eyes. Some of the soundtrack is nostalgic and appropriately festive. There is evidence of charm and heart and the joy of Christmas is captured well.

Tiya Sircar is an amiable lead who really fully engages with her roles without exaggerating. The other casting standout was George Wendt, who is suitably jovial and has a real twinkle in his eye.

Less good sadly was a rather flat Joe Dinicol. There are moments of charm in his chemistry with Sircar, but their chemistry tends to look too awkward and could have done with more initial tension. To me it was a mistake for the central chemistry to be introduced late, as a result it did feel too rushed and underdeveloped (it also appears pretty out of the blue). The script is not as cheesy or as schmaltzy as some Lifetime Christmas films can be, but it does feel a bit on the bland side and do agree that it would have easily have passed for a script from 10 plus years ago.

While the story has some charming and engaging moments, it doesn't properly come to life consistently as a result of narratively the film being quite thin and doing little new with well worn tropes. The ending felt too rushed and too tidy.

Altogether, watchable but a bit mixed here. 5/10

Different

Warning: Spoilers
This movie starts with a premise that has been done a few times, more or less, but it does it differently. For one thing, it doesn't take the easy way. It does get a little cheesy.

Tiya Sircar is a ball of energy and optimism. Jennifer is larger than life in this story, so much so that she usurps much of the store's management functions.

Joe Dinicol's acting isn't horrible. Casting him is unusual, not bad. It's an interesting risk by the movie makers. Jack Desmond is not the usual hunk leading man. He's quirky and only a character like this could tolerate the interloper in their midst - Jennifer.

Kudos to George Wendt. At first, I almost thought he would turn out to be a "real" Santa, but no, he was just vintage George Wendt.

In my reviews, I often say that the thing I usually watch these movies for is the relationship building and this movie spends a lot of time on the reporter and the store rather than the romance. There was a hint of chemistry between the leads, but it didn't have enough time to blossom.

There's a side story with Rose and Manny, but it seems forced and disconnected from the rest of the movie.

Journalistic integrity is a pet peeve of mine. Even though, it didn't have a huge impact to the story, I was very disappointed in Jennifer's broken promise. She makes the promise and in the very next scene her editor is making her break it.

I have to echo other reviewers that there are some great scenery shots, especially if you like Chicago. There's an echo of nostalgia throughout the film.

Going into the climax, things start to develop like you'd expect. Totally predictable. But then it doesn't unfold exactly like you'd expect. And there is one little surprise. (It's surprising largely because of how ridiculous it is. Oh well.)

Note: there are at least two other excellent reviews here already that put some thoughts I already had into words. If I've borrowed some of those words, it's only because they were so accurate and after reading them they cemented within my own thoughts.

Give this movie time to develop. It will still be a tossup - many people still won't like it and many will. But in a season, starting at the end of October, where together on 5 cable channels you can watch or record upwards of 30 Christmas movies a day and more on weekends, this movie is not like the majority of the others romance based Christmas movies.

fairy tale

A modern fairy tale. Saved by the Diamond's against the main actors who unfortunately, are not the most inspired optiond for their roles. Because, nice as Christmas film, it has 0 as romance. An imposible couple and a so forced connection brtween them ! But, sure, like many other films of genre, the supporting actors are real good. And the mixed family sounds reasonable. Short, it could be better. For dialogue, first. But, with indulgence, it can sounds. . nice

Planting false values
render196712 January 2021
If Christmas shopping is a kind of "tradition" for Americans, then I am seriously concerned about the values that this so-called "democratic" country spreads and imposes (in all possible ways and with all possible tools) throughout the world.

A fresh addition to the sea of Christmas movies.
rebekahrox9 November 2020
Nice cast led by the full of energy Tiya Sicar, a very well-reviewed actress and great talent. I suspect that this will be the first and last Christmas movie she will be involved with. She was paired with Joe Dinicol who brings a dorky charm to his role. The mother was delightful (as yet uncredited on IMDb) and had one of the funniest lines I remember in a Lifetime Christmas movie: "I saw a wreath in Cosmetics that looked like a crown of thorns!" I had to rewind the DVR to make sure I heard that correctly. Hilarious! The plot was something different and had a nice twist at the end. The big mystery is how a black woman and a white man could have had an Indian daughter. I'm not sure whether ignoring ethnicity is a good thing or a bad thing. What ever, It's better than #Hallmarksowhite of days gone by, for sure.

Rogue Salesperson!
adamjohns-4257519 November 2022
Christmas 9 to 5 (2019) -

As someone who has done more than my fair share of Christmases in a retail and hospitality environment, I can honestly say that this was not a film for customer assistants, supervisors or managers to watch unless they want to spend the entire hour and a half scoffing at everything that was wrong with it.

The producers of this film had no idea how retail works and I had to question if they'd ever even been in a shop or understood how a business is run, because there was just no way that you could save a department store like that in just one Christmas by doing the things that happened in this film.

And Joe Dinicol was not a leading man, if he'd been my manager, it would have taken a lot for him to have earned my respect. What a dweeb, he couldn't run a shop to save his life. If his character had been a sales assistant or a visual merchandiser I might have found it more believable for her to make a connection with him, but it was hard to believe them as a couple with him being such a useless manager and her being just as useless at so much too.

The story had been done before, with a better structure and written by someone who had actually worked in retail or at least been in a shop, but the ideas in this one were all too far fetched and a lot of it was very cliched, without actually doing the tried and tested the justice that makes it so often used.

It was all very obvious, without it being cute in any way and it just angered me for all of its flaws.

2.50/10.

Tiya Sircar shines brightly again!
Racingphan24 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Tiya Sircar once again stars in an offbeat and quirky Christmas movie, like Good Sam. And just like in that one, she sparkles and sizzles with energy and emotion. Unfortunately, once again she's saddled with a blank slate for the male romantic lead. I can't believe that Tiya Sircar isn't a bigger star. Her beauty outshines anyone else in the TV Christmas movie world.

Love Ode to department store, news and Chicago
gena-ellis1 December 2022
Love seeing Chicago onscreen and what an old school type feel in this movie. An ode to retail and newspaper businesses. Love it! Chi makes great backdrop and character itself.

While liberties are taken in every film (was army and find those hard to watch at times) to tell the story, this was a great feel good Christmas story. Chi is perfect setting and I was transported back in time while seeing the magic of Christmas present. Reminded me of my own childhood going to a smaller city to department stores at Christmas. Love the nostalgia and bringing into present. Plus the diversity of actors.

Online shopping is convenient but this brings it home to the wonder of retail, writing and Christmas.

Ludicrous casting
teebear8174 November 2020
Come on. Seriously? The casting is horrid. That lead actor in a romantic comedy? Maybe, cause it is funny to think a man who speaks like that is a romantic lead. Zero chemistry between the leads. Zero. Completely forced. This actor is so wrong for this part. Her teeth are so bleached that it hurts your eyes to look at them. So its bleached teeth and a lisper falling in love.
