- Reginald Brody is found dead at the bottom of a tower owned by Alistair Hemsley MP, apparently suicide by jumping from the sealed roof. Scotland Yard chief inspector Valentine returns, suspecting his recently bought red scarf in summer is a clue, as just such one was used to murder a woman eight-years ago, when Valentine arrested Brody's son, who was convicted and recently hung himself in prison. Next local inspector Mallory finds Valentine with the dead body of Hemsley's brother and a bloody knife on the again sealed roof. Special branch (IA) chief inspector Sullivan returns to investigate Valentine's arrest, to the annoyance of Inspector Mallory, who had already been moved aside by Valentine, especially as both welcome Brown's informal help while reducing the local police to legwork. Father Brown, Bunty and Mrs. McCarthy attend a party promoting Hemsley's political campaign to solve the three murders. Crucial are a secret room of heritage in the house left as a shrine to Hemsley's late father, an English fascist, and his former comrade i arms, now the gardener.—KGF Vissers
