Rather amusing and not surprised
miriya82917 November 2007
I actually was rather amused by this special. Many people think Bob Saget was going with the vulgarity to show he's not Danny Tanner from Full House. However, he's been doing this kind of comedy for years. His 1990 HBO special's stand segment didn't have as much profanity, but both shows had the same sort of humor, stream of consciousness flow and weird non sequiturs... and a few of the same jokes. Overall, I prefer this special to the old one simply because it doesn't have the dopey framing skits. I did enjoy the last two of his three songs and much of the humor and jokes. Overall, not my favorite special ever but it has a rewatchalibity factor.

More Losers Just Wanting To Rag On Bob...
jeffronthi21 August 2008
...because that was how it was for years. He was the butt of a lot of jokes after he took on America's Funniest Home Videos. His complete "world's greatest dad" persona, Full House, all of the sketchy and lame jokes he told. I got it. Some of you did not, however.

If you all missed the point that he was creating, quite brilliantly, I might add, a cult of Danny Tanner on purpose, I feel for ya. Every time this guy told one of his lame jokes, or would have to smile like a paralyzed idiot for the camera, I could see him laughing inside, as if he were thinking, "you f**king losers!" And when he'd have to pretend that cats attempting to flush toilets was the most hilarious thing he'd ever witnessed, I could have sworn he was thinking: "Run that clip of the toddler falling off the trampoline again."

Come on, people, lighten up. He had to deal with that crap for years. So, yes, I quite enjoyed seeing him lash out a bit and being ridiculous. I am sure he needed it. And for what it is worth, it wasn't that bad. He's no pro at stand-up, but he did a pretty solid job. It was funnier than not. And that is more than I can say for a Dane Cook.

I enjoyed it. I recommend it.

Bob Saget swears a lot and isn't terribly funny
SnoopyStyle26 September 2015
Bob Saget swears a lot in his standup which may be shocking for fans of "Full House" or "America's Funniest Home Videos". His machine gun delivery is laced with swear words like tracer rounds directing the laughter.

I'm not shocked by any swearing. I find his relentless swearing more like a crutch for slightly less funny material. It's like white noise that interferes with the writing. I'm more confounded by the constant laughter from the audience. I didn't watch "Full House" but I don't mind watching some crotch hits on "Funniest Videos". I wonder if his audience is so white bread that they are shocked into laughing by his swearing.

I'm also not a fan of his constant need to reassure the audience that his material isn't real. It keeps stopping the material for me. Instead of reversing on having sex with Kimmy Gibbler, it would funnier to double down on it. At least, it would be more daring. Why not include a donkey? Where's the pedophilia joke? He swears a lot but isn't actually that risqué.

Bob Saget is definitely not Danny Tanner!
Brownsbros328 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I was a little shocked. I expected some bad language, but Bob had his vulgarity meter on overload. In this 55 minute HBO Comedy Special, he probably used the F-word at least 200-300 times. It was almost like Bob was trying too hard to shed his TV father image. To me though, this hurt the first part of his act, because he just wasn't funny. For a while, I was wondering if he was drunk or high on something, because he was rambling incoherently. The audience clapped, but I can't figure out why. I have no problem with using bad language, but I think it should at least be in a funny context. This was just cussing for the sake of cussing.

Later in the show, he actually got into more joke telling, including telling some funny stories from his time on Full House and America's Funniest Home Videos. Bob closed the show with a pair of songs. The first one was more vulgar for the sake of vulgar, while the second one, "Danny Tanner Was Not Gay," was actually pretty funny.

OK, You're Not Danny Tanner, We Get It!
Isaac585531 August 2007
I can't recall the last time I had such high expectations for a piece of television entertainment and was more disappointed at the finished product. BOB SAGET: THAT AIN'T RIGHT is an HBO comedy concert that marked the official return to stand-up comedy for Bob Saget, former star of FULL HOUSE and AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS. Now I can absolutely relate to Saget's desire with this concert to distance himself from his image as the king of family-oriented television, but he really drives the message home with a sledgehammer approach here. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with adult language, but Saget really overdoes it here...Richard Pryor never used the "F" word as much as Saget does in this special and most of the time, it has very little to do with the content of his comedy. He seems to be using it purely for shock value and cheap laughs. His material here is primarily crude, tasteless bathroom humor that just didn't work for me. Saget is working so hard here to let the world know that he is not Danny Tanner (his FULL HOUSE character) by being as tasteless and shocking as he possibly can and it gets very old very quickly. And the saddest part of this debacle is that Bob Saget IS a very funny and intelligent guy who has already proved that he is not Danny Tanner (if you don't believe it, check out his guest appearance on HBO's ENTOURAGE). He's an intelligent comic presence who, for shock value, has checked his quick comic mind at the door and has chosen just to shock and gross out his audience. Saget did share one very story involving an incident in a restroom with his FULL HOUSE co-star John Stamos, but other than that, this concert was a nasty, unappealing disaster. A real shame.

typical saget
thatkid12 September 2007
it's strange to me that i hear people saying stuff like "bob saget doesn't want to be seen as the full house guy so much that he forces cuss words out of his mouth and he should stick with the family entertainment" but as far as i can tell bob saget grew up cussing this much and he was putting a sock in it for the job of playing an unrealistic family in full house (unrealistic in part due to lack of cussing). that means that in his stand ups he is expressing himself as himself... also, bob saget's vulgarity is really not more obscene than George Carlin's who wrote in "brain droppings", "How about a tattoo of the Three Stooges peering into your ***hole?" and as far as stand ups go, this was not the best. it made me laugh quite a few times, about as much as an average George Carlin special but it was not as good as George Carlin's "you are all diseased" or something of that caliber. with the crude humor i was reminded of many gross conversations i have had and laughed about in real life and all that good stuff..

That ain't good (comedy)
warmsunshine29 August 2007
Geez, that's another 5 hours of my life that I'll never get back... What? It only SEEMED like 5 hours? Okay. Well, hell, even the audience wasn't laughing that much. If a "comedy" special was ever in need of a laugh track, this was it. At least then maybe I would have felt at least somewhat compelled to chuckle at the stream of consciousness masquerading as jokes that were coming from the mouth of this boring individual.

The lack of a coherent style was painful from the beginning to the end. Also, I simply don't think that trying to say the F word as many times as possible in 5 (10? 20?) minutes counts as even remotely funny. I find it more funny (hilarious even) that people paid to see this talentless hack.

To quote Jon Lovitz: "It SUCKED!"

Very funny, stream of consciousness, Saget stays true to his original style.
christian-569191 May 2015
A lot of people here are bashing this stand up, claiming Saget's gratuitous use of the F word is to show he is not the same character on Full House. Saget has been doing stand up like this for decades. His jokes were really off the cuff and seem to be just flowing out of his head. He interacts with the audience a lot and if you allow yourself to be bombarded by this stream of consciousnesses/ stream of vulgarity and gross out humor you will enjoy the ride. I would give it a solid 7.5/10. He really has a unique way of doing stand up, and if you think his "jokes" from full house were funny then you should probably not see this special because this is real humor, a comedian's humor.

Predictable HBO (Horrible Bad & Offensive)
glgioia14 December 2007
Can someone at HBO rent the Howard Stern movie or read his book at least, the part where he explains that even crude humor still has to contain the humor part? This "comedy" special is so not funny, that it is almost a parody of bad comedy, like a Simpsons or Family Guy insert. But more accurately, its more of the Sarah Silverman style "look ma, Im swearing on stage and people are clapping for me". It is all so inane, that your blood pressure rises and not at the "performer", but at the dimwits who program this fare and their even dimmer wit counterparts that applaud or support it, which as a subscriber sadly includes moi. The TV directory channel contains more laughs and more pound for pound return on your cable buck. I will admit that like hookers, and wine and buildings etc., bad comedians age pretty well. An old guy mincing around telling horrible jokes actually is genuinely funny. I saw Charilie Callas in Vegas a few years back and almost croaked I was laughing so hard. So give it another 30 years, and Saget will be the bomb. Until then, Masochists will want to view Saget's other monuments to banality, "Full House" as well as the appalling and toothless parody, "Farce of the Penguins."

P.S. now he's on Broadway, and don't bother, I already asked and the theater won't let you in with a crate of old tomatoes.

That Ain't Funny!
gohurdler19 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
That Ain't Funny! Something tells me that they sold this comedy special on the premise that it would be the dad from "Full House" saying naughty words.

I actually fell asleep twice during two separate showings on HBO. That's how boring and lame this special was.

I'm not bothered by comics using profanity but when that's all that they have going for them, then it just isn't funny. I had heard about Bob Saget being a "blue comic" and I had been interested in seeing him perform live, but after watching this "special" I'm now glad that I didn't cough up any bling for some tickets.

It honestly felt like he was trying to cram the f-bomb in as much as he could and it also seemed like he was ad-libbing most of the show that I saw without having much written material, like when he picked a guy out of the audience and just kept saying stupid crap about him. That totally seemed like a time killer.

If you wanted to see Danny Tanner say the f-bomb then watch this special for 10-minutes. After that you will have your fix for the rest of your life!

UPDATE... I have told people over the years about this horrible comedy special, and they seem to be obsessed with their childhood memories of Bob Saget as Danny Tanner from "Full House" so anything he does must be funny.

not funny

Warning: Spoilers
This is my first time seeing Bob Saget in something other than America's Funniest Home Videos and Full House. He wasn't funny on those shows and he isn't funny on this one. I have often wondered how he has a career. His timing is off for the entire show. There is no sense of tension and release in this show and he resorts to 12 year old potty humor for most of the show. I guess if you're 12, this might be funny, unless you are an intelligent 12 year old. "My Dog Licked My Balls" is just, well, stupid. I have to say, I was expecting and hoping for his redeeming himself as a good comedian after the bad comedy of Full House and Funniest Videos, but was disappointed.

Effing efftons of effing fun
Conchaga15 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
All I have to say is EFF YES! How had I not seen this wonderful performance for three years!? Bob has been playing his fatherly personae for years, and making tons of money doing it. However, all that has taught us is that he is a fantastic actor, and he doesn't disappoint with this bit of stand-up. He doesn't just shed the puritanical, conservative, goofy daddy he's milked the teet of for years. He dumps it in a cow shredder (ever seen one of those things? They're machines that shred entire cows and goats and sheep like giant paper shredder. Not for the weak of stomach, but I digress) and Gallagher-s the audience with it. What most of the reviewers here haven't figured out is that he was just playing yet another persona. He wanted to come out and sell the fact that we've all been secretly wanting him to explode into a filthy Tourette-induced fit for years. Well, at least I have... Yet, to prove a point, admit to yourself, that, just once, you didn't want him to drop the F-bomb on Home Videos when some poor schmuck gets pummeled in the testes for the 100th time; or that you didn't halfway expect him to make some sort of messed-up comment to the Olsen twins on Full House which would make them cry and scar them for life. I say if you try and tell us you didn't have that urge, at least once, you're lying. All that this special was missing was him going into a Hulk-like rage and punching some random audience member in the face.

I just want to congratulate Mr. Saget for liberating himself from the oppressive yolk that's placed on the necks of so many entertainers by the mindless masses, expecting a person to adhere to the persona those members of the mob want them to, simply for their mindless entertainment purposes. I wish more celebrities would do this sort of thing more often. If that were the case, we'd finally be free of those terrible toilet paper substitutes that clutter our grocery store checkout lanes, yammering on about how some forgettable, temporary, "innocent" celeb got drunk and urinated on the Liberty Bell. I think what Mr. Saget was trying to say with this performance is that celebrities are human, just like the rest of us, and whether we like it or not, we all have those basal id instincts we try so very hard to hide in "civilized" society. All he did was just let it out, with reckless hysterical abandon.

Did he really need the money so bad?
progen4 September 2007
Watched it and not only was I not impressed, I was disgusted. Enough to junk it. What I like to do to chill out is to put on a standup show and just lie on the bed and listen. The greats like George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby and even Chris Rock. Those are entertaining. And once in a while, Andrew Dice Clay amuses too but Bob Saget takes the cake for being the worst comic I've ever heard. Jerry Seinfeld is monotonous but he does throw in some intelligent ones every now and then in his shows. Watching Bob Saget brought me back to my school days when we had this total nerd in class. One day, he started doing profanities, flinging around the F word every sentence or two just to fit in with the rougher guys. Sounds EXACTLY like Bob, huh? ;) Did Mr Saget have something to prove? His delivery sucked too so I guess I'll have to salute his memory because that sure sounded like what he was doing. Reciting the entire show by heart. Unwatchable. Even Van Damme movies are more interesting.

Don't waste your time, this is garbage
santegeezhe13 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, "That Ain't Right" is very, very bad - dismal even. How badly can a comedy special fail? Well, when it contains absolutely no laughs whatsoever, I'd say it qualifies as a miserable failure.

What we have herein is Bob Saget attempting to prove that he's an edgy, hip, and all-around cool dude, rather than the family-friendly, emasculated moron persona he inhabited for such glorious stints as the father on "Full House" and host of "America's Funniest Home Videos". To this end, his strategy consists of saying as many "dirty" and "shocking" things as he can for approximately sixty minutes (notice I didn't say "funny"?). It's actually kind of sad to watch him struggle through it.

There's even a bit at the end where he whips out a guitar and tries his hand at singing some dirty, ostensibly funny songs. The trouble is that they're completely stupid (something about his dog licking his balls) and he can neither sing nor play the guitar. I really have no idea why he would even attempt this since there are so many people who do it better. He must have been desperate to fill the alloted sixty minutes.

If you watch this mess you will regret it. You've been warned.

What About Bob? (Well... He's Not Funny!)
ike-2129 September 2007
There's a new Bob in town!

Nope, not the one who does funny voice-overs for people falling down -- but a new Bob with an unfunny, despicable, poignant potty-mouth.

This is Bob Saget at his worst. His stand-up routine consists of calling his little children foul names, making gay jokes about his ex-coworkers, and sex with animals (which he's obviously an authority on the subject).

It is beyond me how the audience forced their laughter. I guess if I saw a few HBO cameras in the auditorium, I would smile for the camera too.

Take Eddie Murphy in "Raw" for an excellent example. He could use the F-word in his stand-up routine in ways that's funny and it doesn't even stand out.

Bob, on the other hand, forces the F-word down your throat -- and at times, spews it out like he has Tourette's Syndrome. For some reason, he's obviously trying to shed those good-guy clothes from those quirky, likable characters from AFV and Full House. And he really did a good job at that. And that's the only good thing I can say about this stand-up performance. I'll never look at him in the same light again.

I thought he was a good choice for "1 VS 100". But after this work-of-art, and "Farce of the Penguins", I could only bid farewell to that silly, nasally, try-not-to-snicker, straight-faced Lurch.

Goodbye, Bob. Goodbye, career.

...really?...
Ender_mhx28 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This stand up is terrible, I think I chuckled twice to myself...barely. It seemed like he didn't even rehearse; he just kept swearing about nothing. His warnings to a audience member about not having sex with animals was awful and dragged on for way to long. Also the jokes about girls complaining about their cell phone service wasn't even close to being funny; why does he think its funny to have sex with his daughters friends? Bob Saget could quite possibly be the worst stand up comedian I have ever seen. I couldn't even believe that people were laughing, I was so confused, I couldn't tell what they thought was funny. Avoid this at all costs, I give it a 1/10...no, you know what I give this a zero, biggest waste of time ever. Again, avoid at all costs.

Not very good
shield0013 October 2007
This is probably one of the worst pieces of comedy I have ever seen. He uses the F word, among many other curse words, and disgusting dialog (penis jokes, dogs balls, etc) to get laughs. He has too much of a squeaky clean image to pull off the vulgar comedian. It somehow was funny when Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy and now Chris Rock did the vulgar comedy style. Saget could't pull it off.

I always kind of felt sorry for Saget as the 'unfunny' comedian. He has never made me laugh in anything he has done. My friends and I used to mute the TV when he hosted "America's Funniest Home Videos." He was so annoying and distracting, it was better to mute it and listen to music while we watched.

Warning: Spoilers
OK, So yesterday night i had some drinks and i had a very good evening. Suddenly out of nowhere Bob Saget was on TV and we had to watch it but damn, That wasn't funny at all! It was rather disturbing/disgusting.

We kept watching though, Cause this show is like a car accident: Its absolutely horrible but its hard to look away.

What really amazed me is that there were actually people laughing in the audience. I mean if it was ANYONE but Bob Saget talking about his sexual adventures with animals/vampires/daughters or his daughters friends, NOBODY would be laughing, This basically shows the intelligence of people these days The thing is, This comedy show didn't contain any jokes, It was just some guy talking about his perverted messed up life, I actually felt a bit sorry for him. But i respect bob saget he always made me laugh when i was 8 years old, too bad i grew up, Maybe its time for Bob Saget to do that as well.

This show was absolutely horrible, But i suggest you watch it so you can see for yourself what happened to our society!

Should have been called "What is that?" (And then they should have burned down the venue with everyone inside.)
franzobermeier13 April 2009
This is absolutely the worst stand up routine I have ever heard. He didn't tell even one joke over the the entire one hour special. He has no punchlines, he just whispers "my penis" under his breath, and then says "what is that?". Then he says "no, don't do that f**ked up s**t!" Then repeats that 25 times. How does he have a comedy central special? I don't even think he knows. He asks the audience to stop laughing more than a few times, because they don't know what to laugh at (there is nothing to laugh at). All of his anecdotes include some reference to sex, and it is not tasteful at all. He makes creepy sexual references his young daughters, and AAAAAAAARRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want to see a comic swear his a** off, watch Louis C.K.'s 'Chewed Up'. That is some quality s**t.

P.S. "My dog licked my balls" F******************k!?!?!?!

Plaintively Awful ('0' out-of-'10')
tpaigeba14 September 2007
Couldn't watch the whole debacle. I am no 'priss' about the English language - blue or otherwise - but he wasn't funny. He tried so hard, and with his sadly inappropriate and pathetically redundant use of the 'f' word, turned his monologue into another 'f' word: f-l-o-p! What an embarrassment! I tuned in 3 times in order to (hopefully) witness some cleverness, wit, charm or otherwise redeeming quality to his presentation - and there was none to be had. His monologue is the worst thing I 've seen on cable - ever. Even the worst movie is a better waste of my time than this sorry excuse for humor!

I really thought he'd gone off the deep end. I even Googled "Bob Saget had a stroke" just to see if perhaps that was the case. What has happened to him? Does he think that just by saying the 'f' word often enough it would make him funny? Good night, Louise! If I were the children he mentions in his 'shtick' I would immediately get myself declared an emancipated minor, change my last name and move to an undisclosed locality.

Someone (perhaps personal career-killer Andrew Dice Clay) should have had the decency to tell Bob Saget (before his appearance on nationwide TV) that this material was not only offensive, but a comic's worst nightmare – unfunny – and demanded that Saget burn all his notes.

And, if I may ask, what is wrong with HBO? I associate their products with quality. No more. If someone at the top thought it was a good idea to put this heretofore pleasant TV personality/comedian's awful drivel on TV, then they should give serious consideration to changing careers; as it will take decades to undo the distasteful musings of this once-decent, once-likable and now and again funny guy. It's like an evil force entered Bob Saget's body and decided to utterly destroy him for the rest of time. Or has he managed over the years to keep his now apparent Tourette's Syndrome in check? Or has he had a reverse lobotomy?

I don't think Bob Saget will ever be able to overcome this career move. He has murdered his career; while sentencing his body to life.

Shame, Shame, Shame

Possibly the least entertaining hour ever
paul_stanley8 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I was debating whether or not to click the 'contains spoiler' checkbox, but then it occurred to me that it is simply impossible to spoil something that has no redeeming qualities. I'm no prude, and I love stand up, but this was just a total mess. It reminded me of the foul-mouthed bum who hangs out by my local supermarket... no theme, no jokes, no comic timing.. just an unrelenting stream of gibberish interspersed with vulgarity for attempted shock value.

Watching this I was wondering if he's actually spent time to write any material or whether he just walked on stage and spat out whatever nonsense came into his head. I think the latter. This has nothing to do with comedy whatsoever. If you want to see funny, watch one of the roasts that Comedy Central played the same day... equally vulgar but actually containing jokes. You know the kind: "Bob Saget was so remarkably unfunny that his mother in the audience asked for a refund".

Huuuuge disappointment
lkempin11 January 2022
Wow, I am really surprised that Bob Saget's stand-up work is so unfunny. Due respect for the dead, but hearing the F bomb 1-3 times each sentence does not make anything funnier, whether it was funny to begin with or not. Take out the swearing and his so-called comedy is not funny. Cringe-worthy, yes. He's obviously going for shock value after doing Full House & family shows for so long, but seriously, does swearing really shock anymore?! This is not clever or witty, just basic toilet humour peppered with the F word way too much. Excessive swearing doesn't and never has offended me - it just bores the crap out of me. A commedian's material needs to stand-up (no pun intended) & get laughs on it's own merit, because after a very short while (10 seconds for me), the swearing becomes lazy, a crutch, and really annoying. Even if the material & delivery are top-notch, excessive swearing actually serves to dumb-down the subject matter. Good comedy should not be dumbed-down. Jerry Seinfeld does this better than most.

I watched a few episodes of Full House recently and couldn't help but notice that Bob Saget's heart didn't seem to be in the show - his acting & smiles seemed forced. It was a pretty lame show and he actually comes across as being embarassed by it. I could be reading too much into that - 20/20 hind sight.

I have nothing against swearing & do it myself, but not to excess as so many people do these days, which is just lazy.

Holy Crap!
guero715 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is the most uncomfortable performance I've ever seen. I am not against cursing. I believe there is an art to cursing, and if done correctly, it can be very funny and sometime the only way to effectively hammer home the point. Not one part of this performance was funny. I've read other reviews defending Bob's cursing. They claim that he has always cussed and therefore, this performance shouldn't be odd. Well, it is obvious that Bob needs lessons on how to curse. He seemed like he was not comfortable with himself. It seems like some idiot advised him to take this performance in this direction. It seems like he was not smart enough to find someone to tell him the truth. I have no idea why HBO keeps playing this performance. This is not a case of "everyone has a different idea of funny". This is a case of a terrible actor doing a terrible, inappropriate stand-up lack-of-comedy performance. Right is right and wrong is wrong....Bob, you can do better than this. Someone needs to stop worrying about hurting feeling and tell Bob that this performance was cheap and sucked donkey balls!

Saget
AfricanBro8 September 2022
I basically feel the same way I did about his 2013 special as I do this, only difference being I feel like he actually prepared jokes this time, while in 'That's what I'm talking about' he sounded like he just went on stage unprepared and started talking, with nothing but his usual wit. So this was better, got a few chuckles out of me. His material isn't that diverse as he spends most of the time talking about his previous shows so if you're unfamiliar with those you won't relate as much, which was my case. If you already liked Bob Saget being Bob Saget then you'll enjoy this because it is a peculiar type of humor, but if you didn't and are just looking for a special to watch it's worth second guessing, not something I'd recommend.

worst comedy ever

I'm not against cussing as much as you want but this is awful... his whole comedy is him forcing out as many cuss words as possible like he wants put to see him other than the full house dad but he over does it so much its crazy.... never have i seen something so stupid has to be the most cuss words ever said in within the length of time ever. and the whole problem is it isn't funny just forced constant cuss words to prove he isn't a nice guy... i know lots of people like different things but i don't see how anyone can enjoy this garbage you can tell he is a decent actor and possibly comedian and how he even thought this would make good for TV or movies i don't possibly know
