- In 1864, Civil War hero Sheriff John Breaker (Neal McDonough) and his son Carl (Steven R. McQueen) reunite to arrest Union Army friend "The Saint. (Casper Van Dien). Now a fierce gang leader, his raids threaten to bring the country back into conflict.
Bonnie (Annabeth Gish) is John's wife. 4 yrs after the civil war, John is in Linn Creek Missouri. John is now the local Sherrif. Bugle (Gregory Cruz) is his assistant. Deputy Marshall Shanks (Greg Perrow) & his FBI team is on the lookout for a goon named "the Saint".. Carl is with Shanks as his assistant. John has arrested 3 bounty hunters in his jurisdiction recently and knows that something is cooking. Carl & Shanks meet with Joh at his house and inform him that The Saint has been hitting re-construction sites and robbing the materials and selling them on the black market. John is shocked as he has personally pardoned The Saint from hanging at the end of the civil war (Saint was a Union army soldier) The Saint was a soldier in the Union Army called Virgil. His son was killed by a rebel soldier. Virgil vowed revenge, which John talks against. Virgil blames John for his son's death as John had stopped Carl from killing a fleeing rebel soldier, who later turned back and killed Virgil's son. Virgil deserted the army to avenge his son's death. John arrests Virgil and he is sentenced to death by hanging.
For John to help Carl, he would have to accept a role as Carl's Deputy, as they would cross state lines. Saint's colleagues are Anvil (Esteban Cueto) (brass knuckles), Holt (Daniel Norris) (ace sharp shooter), Franklin York (Isaiah Stratton) (sniper), George Washington Jr. (Trace Cheramie) (Claims to be the direct descendant of the president), Tucker Macready (Gregory Alan Williams) (hates rebel sympathizers, a musician), Stacey Snyder (Roxanna Dunlop) (a girl), all led by the Saint.
Carl and John track Virgil, The Saints team to the house of Abigail Abington (Christie McNab). The FBI team attacks the house, killing a few members of Virgil's team while losing some of their own. John asks Carl to retreat for the night. On the way Virgil had his team has raided a Union Army transport and stole a chest of gold. They had brought it to Abigail's house as her husband was a rebel solider and Virgil was still hunting all rebels to avenge his son's death. Virgil is keen to kill John once and for all and presses his men to attack, which leads to their deaths as John & Carl pick them off one by one. It is revealed that Carl and Stacey are together and love each other.
John corners Virgil who has Abigail in his grip. Virgil threatens to shoot Abigail, and John calls his bluff as he knows Virgil is not a stone cold killer. Virgil spares Abigail, but shoots Carl so that John also knows the pain of losing a son. John again corners Virgil, but spares him as he still sees good in him. Abigail wants to shoot Virgil, but John convinces her to let him go to court instead.
