Scooby in Kwackyland

One of the more inventive and best episodes of this short-lived 'Scooby Doo' series, featuring some lovely animation and jokes along the way.

Good fun overall.

"Scooby in Kwackyland" was one of the earliest episodes of 'The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo' watched. What really leapt out at me on first watch were the colourful visuals, the opening scene and Platypus Duck and his jingle in particular as well as on a not so good note Demondo's voice. 'The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo' did have some creative scenarios, and this is one of the standout ones. Anything centered around comics brings the inner child out which is a great thing to feel when down.

While not one of my favourite episodes of 'The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo', "Scooby in Kwackyland" is still good fun and although there are better villains than Demondo in the show (i.e. Maldor, Zomba, Nicara, Time Slime) this is one of the funniest episodes and has one of the more inventive stories. A great concept lived up to very well if not perfectly, and it is another one of those episodes actually that got better and more entertaining with each rewatch.

Beginning with what is great, the animation is colourful and lively. Especially when in Kwackyland that clearly saw the whole crew behind the episode having so much fun with the comic book setting. The music has lost none of its character and atmosphere, the introduction of Demondo is especially well scored and the quirky scoring when in the diner is lovely. The voice acting from all the regulars is great, Casey Kasem and Don Messick are without equal when it comes to the voice acting of Shaggy and Scooby.

The dialogue is never too juvenile or too complicated, with lots of lines that made me laugh out loud. Of the 13 episodes of the show, "Scooby in Kwackyland" is one of the funniest. It can be goofy but it fits within the comic book setting beautifully and doesn't get excessively like it did in "When You Witch Upon a Star". The story is action packed, lively and inventive, making the most of one of the more inspired storylines. The gang are all great and Vincent (in a rare occurance of having nothing to do with the adventure and having no knowledge of it) is fun when he appears. Platypus Duck is a lot of fun and the Kwackyland characters all have colourful personalities.

Demondo is underwhelming as a villain though and one of the weaker ones of 'The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo'. He looks cool and makes quite an eerie introduction, but he is not very menacing or that much of a threat. Michael Rye's voice work is also not great and it made it difficult for me to take him seriously as a character. He constantly sounds like he was slurping on spit the entire time and it gets on the nerves.

Also have always found it hard to believe that such an intelligent character like Vincent Van Ghoul falls so easily for such blatantly obvious disguises that most people would very quickly see through. Scrappy adds nothing to the episode and have never been able to remember his involvement.

In summary, well worth watching and while not one of the best of the show it's in the better half despite the villain not being the best. 7/10.
