- Olivia struggles to sort out truth from fiction after her daughter mysteriously vanishes during a camping trip with the new neighbors.
- In the woods, a woman seems to hide from another person with a knife. Then, this woman, Olivia, and her husband, Layne, are having a discussion in their house. The latter has cheated on her, so she decided to throw him out of the house. Their hidden daughter, Hannah, is hearing the already heated up conversation between the two. When she gets to the kitchen, the father leaves, telling her that he will be on the cabin of the family just a phone call away. Her daughter leaves the kitchen very upset. On the next scene, mother and daughter are painting on the sun porch and a police comes to visit them. He speaks to Olivia, and she looks very shocked to her daughter. She tells Hannah that her father has died.
Two weeks later, Olivia is preparing the opening of her art gallery and Jack arrives, a long time friend of Olivia. He disappeared for a while, but he came back to stay. He asks for Hannah and then as she tells the story to Jack, it is revealed that Layne died in a car accident when he got out of the road on his way to the cabin. Jack ends living in Olivia's studio apartment. When she arrives home after the encounter with Jack, she finds there a new neighbor, Mary, and her daughter Sydney. She is from Seattle, like Olivia. They talk a little, and they promise to take a coffee later when Mary is settled. Later that day Olivia and Hannah are painting on the gallery and Gretchen, the caterer girl of the opening, arrives to give her a receipt. She asks both to forgive her for having interrupted them, and she leaves. Olivia has to make some errands, so she leaves there Hannah waiting for Jack, who is about to arrive.
When she arrives home, Olivia encounters Mary outside, and they decide to take the once promised coffee and Olivia suggests her house. During the conversation, Olivia tells Mary that her husband died in a car accident and that he was cheating on her with another woman. She tells her also that Layne started to being jealous of her relationship with Jack, so she decided to throwing him out of the house. Then Mary as a way to release some tension decides to invite both Olivia and Hannah to a camping trip with her daughter. A little while later, Hannah arrives home, and she tells Olivia that she did not wait for Jack and that she has passed the rest of the day with Sydney on her house. Hannah tells her mother that she accepted the invitation to the camping trip, to what Olivia agrees, and she asks Hannah to send her a picture of the paining that she was supposed to show to Jack.
Early in the morning, Hannah goes with Mary and Sydney to the camping trip, and Olivia goes out of the house to say goodbye as her daughter gets on Mary's car. Later, she goes to the gallery and speaks with Jack. She calls Hannah, but she does not take the phone, being out of range. Already in her house, she sends a message to Hannah, but she does not message back. She calls again while she is waiting to see her soon. Then Mary arrives and when she asks for Hannah, Mary tells her that Hannah did not go to the camping. She enters in panic, and even Sydney denies the fact that Hannah went with them. Mary decides to take Olivia home to speak with her and reassure her.
She suddenly thinks of Jack, the only person Hannah knows there, and she goes to see him in the gallery. She asks Jack very worried where is her daughter, and they decide to ask the neighbors and if they can not find anything then to call the police. Hannah instantly goes to Mary's house, and she decides to trespass, but Mary finds her. Olivia asks Sydney if she knows something but still she denies knowing Hannah, although apparently they have met each other the day Mary and Olivia took coffee together. Olivia gets very angry, accusing Mary of lying, and she decides to call the police.
Later, Bruce Chamber, a Police Detective-the same that told her about her husband's death-arrives to Olivia's home. She tells him everything about the mysterious disappearance of Hannah. She even tells him that she saw her with her very own eyes to get on Mary's car. Bruce goes to Mary's house and when he comes back, Mary's version is still the same. He wants her to see someone before making the report to the police. When she enters a room, there is a woman, Lisa, and she tells her that she missed the last appointment. At the same time, it is revealed that Hannah and her husband died together in the car accident, and Olivia has symptoms of disassociation. At first, she does not believe it and she tells Bruce crying that he must have seen Hannah the day he announced Layne's death, but he denies it, and he tells her sorry.
When she arrives home helped by Lisa and Bruce she is very confused, and it seems Olivia is now starting to doubt her sanity. Mary tries to ask her how is she, but Bruce and Lisa takes her immediately inside the house. Once inside, Lisa gives her some tea to calm her down, and she explains to her that sometimes the dead of a loved one can end in disassociation. She adds that one week ago she was healing, but she started to talk a lot about Hannah, and she forgot the appointment. Lisa has arrived to the conclusion that she may be in a state of fugue, characterized by reversible amnesia. Nevertheless, Olivia insists on her versions of the events, and she breaks down and starts to cry.
The next morning, she wakes up in her bed alone, and she walks through her house as if someone was there. She sees in the kitchen Mary, who's making breakfast. She explains to Olivia that Lisa let her in. When Olivia seems to start to accept that Hannah is dead, she sees her daughter painting. She remembers that Hannah send her a picture of her painting before, supposedly, going camping, but when she checks her phone there is no picture in there. Mary leaves, and she finds a package on the door. When she is alone, she opens it, and she finds in the box the ashes of Hannah and Layne. She leaves immediately while Mary is very preoccupied watching as she is pruning her garden. Olivia arrives to Jack's home, and she tells her about the urns. It is explained that Bruce and Layne were best friends but, nevertheless, they found strange that the first was not that much affected when he told her Layne was dead. She tells Jack that Layne was jealous of him, she was surprised at the moment, but then Jack confesses to her that he started to feel something about her and Layne suspected something.
While there are talking about what is happening to her, Bruce and Lisa are talking about owing to Layne to walk Olivia through the situation. Later, Bruce goes to Olivia's home to drop some documents, and she finds Mary. Olivia is not home, so he gives the documents to Mary. Before leaving the gallery, Jack and Olivia agree that Hannah may be alive because according to them, it does not make sense that the day Layne ended dying was the day he was going to leave. So, Olivia looking for proofs asks the caterer girl if she saw someone there the day she gave the receipt to her. She thinks someone was there and Olivia explains to her that she must go to the police, to what she agrees but a little later because she has something to do first. When Olivia leaves the place, someone takes Gretchen and leave her unconscious.
Back in Olivia's house, Bruce arrives, and she tells him about the witness. She checks his phone, and she sees a message from Gretchen where it says that she changed her mind, and she does not remember seeing anyone. She tries to call her, but someone hangs up the phone. Bruce tries to make her go with Lisa, but she screams and pushes Bruce. Finally, she decides to rest and tells Bruce he can leave. When Bruce is outside the house, he calls someone and says that he believes they have a problem. Seconds later, it is Mary who arrives and gives Olivia the documents. She asks Mary to stay and inside the envelope there are both death certificates of Lyane and Hannah. The next thing she takes out of the envelope is a piece of paper with the article about Lyane and Hannah' death. But then she remembers the same article her daughter was reading after her husband died and before Hannah's disappearance. In that article, it was only mentioned her husband, and she shows them both to Mary. Olivia is sure that Bruce planned everything, but she does not know why, although she thinks that Hannah is still alive. After calling Jack, Bruce and Lisa knock at the door to evaluate her situation. Olivia, lying, says to them that the article and the ashes help her to clarify the events.
After Olivia promises to both of them to ask for an appointment, and they leave the place, she decides to go to the one place where she has never been since the beginning of the events. Mary then decides to go with her to be safer. At the same time, on the cabin, Hannah walks through the door, and she reunites with her father on the outside. They talk about the fact that she is alive and that she does not understand why he has not told Olivia anything. Lyane gets a little angry, and he says no to Hannah, raising his voice before she can continue speaking. On the way to the cabin, Olivia tells Mary that she suspected something and Mary tells that Bruce was like a brother to Layne, but Olivia does not remember telling her anything like it. Again in the cabin, Hannah asks her father why he stayed in the cabin instead of coming back home, and he answers that he did not remember anything after the accident. During the conversation it is revealed that the day Hannah went camping-she went indeed-Mary and Sydney disappeared, and then she found Layne, and that the body inside the car was a hitchhiker. On the car, Olivia starts asking Mary how she knew Bruce was like a brother to Layne, and although Mary tells her that she mentioned something, Olivia does not believe it. When Mary tells her that it was Bruce who told her, things get quiet. Lyane and Hannah continue their walk as Hannah speaks about reuniting the family again.
Now in the city, Sidney knocks on Jack's door and tells him that she needs help because something bad is going to happen. She admits to Jack that Hannah went camping with them and that her mother told her to lie to Olivia. As they are having this conversation, Mary stops the car because she wants to call Sydney, and she gets out. Sydney tells to Jack that she does not understand her mother and that Bruce help to cover the lie, but Jack calls the police anyway. On their walk, Layne receives a call from Mary saying that Olivia found out the truth. Having no options, they decide to kill her, and Layne says to Hannah that her mother had an accident on her way to the cabin. She starts to run as Olivia realizes that Bruce, Lisa, Mary, and Layne planed everything from the beginning, and it is revealed that Lisa is the master chief. As Mary explains everything while she is putting clothes to not leave traces-gloves, etc.-she says to Olivia that they wanted to have her in a mental institution, but Layne did not want to. Then she takes a big knife, and she says to her that after the funeral, she and Layne can finally be married. At this precise moment, she sees inside the car the dead body of Gretchen-the caterer girl-.
On the last sequences of events, Olivia runs through the woods with Mary following her, and she hides under a tree. Mary runs away from the tree, believing it is Olivia escaping in the distance. Then, Olivia gets out from under the tree and starts running in the opposite direction, but she stumbles with Hannah running from her father. They run to the car, but Mary is there hiding and takes Hannah hostage. Lyane arrives and try to convince Mary to not hurt anyone. Then Bruce arrives with Lisa, and he ends shooting Mary because she wants to kill Olivia. In the shooting, Lyane have died too. Four month later, mother and daughter are painting again in the sun porch, and she says to her mother that Sydney came back to Seattle, and she is with her grandparents. They hug each other and Olivia says to her daughter that she want to be sure that she is real. The last scene presents, Jack and Olivia talking in the gallery and kissing each other.
