- Sister Florence sees Elfie hiding the cursed quilt and asks Ryan where Reverend Josiah is to tell him the whereabouts of the quilt that was stolen from Sarah. Meanwhile, Josiah learns from Fraser that the council is worried about his administration and will send an inquisitor to their community. Elfie uses the quilt to kill Florence and Ryan is accused of killing her. Ryan discloses the secret of Elfie and the quilt to Josiah, and he surprisingly marries her. During the night, he uses the quilt to kill her. Jack and Micki leave the Curious Goods and head to the community to tell Ryan the latest news. The inquisitor Holmes arrive at the community and begins to interview the residents. However, Josiah uses the quilt to kill Holmes and frame Ryan, sentencing him to death. Now his only hope is that Laura finds the proof of his innocence.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Sister Florence looks into Effie's room and sees Effie putting away the Quilt then looking out the window. The older woman then leaves without Effie noticing her.
Fraser finds Josiah working and tells him that the Penitite Council has grave concerns about how Josiah is running the colony. When Fraser points out that Josiah hasn't chosen a wife, Josiah notes that twice his betrothed have died and the Council believes someone else should run the colony. Josiah objects and Fraser warns him that the Council doesn't see it that way.
Ryan, now wearing Penitite garb, is working on a roof when Florence comes over and asks him if he's seen Josiah. She says that she saw the Quilt that was stolen from Sarah and Josiah must know. Ryan confirms that Florence saw Effie with the Quilt, and he says that they have to get the Quilt because it's a great evil. Florence says that she'll only give it to Josiah, and Ryan agrees as long as it's out of Effie's hands.
Fraser returns to Josiah and tells him that the Council feels that the deaths involve witchcraft. Josiah asks who spreads the lies, and Fraser points out that the Council has doubts about Josiah promising Laura's hand to Ryan. The reverend says that it's weakness for his only child's happiness.
Florence takes Ryan to the house where Effie is living with the other sisters, but refuses to let him go up to a woman's room. Ryan waits on the stairs while Florence goes to get the Quilt. Entering Effie's room while Effie is out, Florence gets the Quilt from its hiding place in the bed chest. Effie returns early and catches Florence, and Florence says Josiah will decide where the Quilt ends up. Grabbing the Quilt, Effie insists that it's hers and will stay with her. Florence loses the Quilt and leaves, and Effie wraps the Quilt around her and lies on the floor, dreaming.
Effie projects another nightmare, this time onto Florence. In the hallway, Florence collapses in enforced sleep. In the nightmare, Effie kills Florence with a meat prong to the eye as the dream Josiah looks on. Ryan hears Florence's screams and runs upstairs, and finds Florence dead. The brothers find Ryan with Florence's corpse, and Ryan goes to Effie's room and barges in. Effie isn't there, and the brothers grab Ryan and take him away.
At Curious Goods, Micki and Jack prepare to go to the colony. Micki worries that they may be too late.
Fraser tells Josiah that the Council has sanctioned an Inquisitor to come to the colony and check Josiah's stewardship. The Inquisitor is arriving in two days, and Josiah says that he has to make sure there are no incidents while the Inquisitor is there. The brothers sound the alarm and Josiah tells Fraser that he'll hold him responsible. A woman runs up and says that Florence is dead.
Laura finds Ryan outside, and he asks for her help to speak with Josiah. He refuses to tell her what's going on, to keep her safe. The Penitites are talking about how the deaths started when Ryan arrived, and one brother suspects him of witchcraft. Laura insists that Ryan is a gentle kind man, and the Penitite accuses Ryan of seducing Laura away from her faith. The woman insists that she hasn't been seduced, and Josiah arrives and tells Ryan that he needs to speak to him.
In Josiah's office, Josiah insists on questioning Ryan. Josiah excuses Fraser and points out that some claim Ryan killed Florence. Ryan denies it, and Josiah warns that the Penitites are claiming witchcraft. When Ryan tells Josiah that it is the power of Satan, Josiah thinks he's being mocked. Ryan explains about the curse and how it works, and that Effie has the Quilt. Josiah wonders why Effie would kill Jane and Rebecca, and Ryan says that Effie has always loved Josiah and wants the power of the reverend's wife. Ryan suggests that Sarah and Florence caught Effie using the Quilt, but Josiah doesn't believe him. Josiah agrees to help Ryan, but forbids him from discussing the Quilt with anyone else under threat of being expelled. Ryan leaves without a word.
At supper that night, Ryan and Laura join the table. Josiah announces that each of his betrothed has died, and he is compelled to ask Effie if she would marry him and she has said yes. Effie takes Josiah's hand for a moment, and Josiah says that they were secretly wed that afternoon.
Later that night, Josiah and Effie retire to their bedroom. Effie takes out the Quilt and says that it will assure him dreamless sleep. They go to bed, putting the Quilt on, and Effie and Josiah merge dreams. The dream Effie grabs a knife from the serving table and dances with the dream Josiah. She prepares to kill him, but Josiah knows the power of the Quilt from Ryan and turns the nightmare against Effie. The couple appear outside, and Effie is forced to drop the knife. The dream Josiah snaps the dream Effie's back, killing the real Effie.
Josiah wakes up, clutching the Quilt, and confirms that Effie has died in her sleep of a broken back. He takes her corpse out and dumps it in the basement woodshed.
The fuel pumps go out on the limo, and Micki hopes they can get Ryan to change his mind. Jack says that the journey is to get the Quilt back, not Ryan, and says that he'll respect what Ryan believes will make him happy.
The next morning, Ryan wait outside of Josiah's house. Josiah finally comes out and begs Ryan's forgiveness. He says that he hoped taking Effie as wife would get her to reveal where the Quilt is. Josiah claims that Effie left and took the Quilt with her, and leaves.
The Inquisitor, Holmes, arrives at the colony a day early and Josiah greets him. Josiah leads Holmes to the hall for his inquiries, and Holmes tells Josiah that he has much to answer for.
Ryan meets with Laura and tells him that Josiah's claims seem suspicious. Laura insists that Josiah isn't like that, and she would know better than Ryan. She storms off, furious.
Matthew accuses Ryan of bringing the sins of the outside in. Holmes tells Matthew that as long as Ryan is willing to take the vows of a Penitite, he's welcome as a convert and suggests that Matthew do the same. Josiah arrives and Matthew leaves, and Holmes asks Josiah about the Quilt. Josiah feigns ignorance, but Holmes has heard of it and the patterns of Satan on it. The reverend says that there was no signs of theft, and Sarah later claimed it was mislaid. Holmes doesn't believe him and continues making notes, and Josiah leaves.
That night, Ryan goes to Laura's house and apologizes. She accepts his apology, and Josiah arrives and tells Ryan that Holmes has ordered Ryan's expulsion and he has one hour to leave. Josiah claims that Holmes has ordered against him and goes inside with Laura.
Ryan goes to his room to pack, and Laura finds him there. She makes sure no one is watching and comes in, and says that she will write often to Ryan. Laura says that her world will be less without Ryan, but says that she can never leave the colony. Ryan tells Laura that he can't stay, and Laura gives him his Penitite hat to remember her by. He assures Laura that he'll never forget her.
As the couple start to kiss, Matthew barges in and tells Ryan that Holmes wishes to see him. Ryan goes to change Holmes' mind, and Josiah sees Ryan go.
Holmes dozes off and Josiah uses the Quilt to kill him in a nightmare. Ryan comes in as Holmes cries out in the nightmare, and tries to wake Holmes up. Holmes swings at him wildly with a letter opener, then stabs himself to death. Fraser and the other Penitites come in and see Ryan kneeling by Holmes' body, and Fraser accuses Ryan of being the witch. Josiah wakes up in his bed, clutching the Quilt, and hides it as he hears the alarm.
Josiah goes to the meeting hall, feigning shock at Holmes' death, and Fraser accuses Ryan of murdering the Inquisitor. Laura arrives and Josiah tells her that Ryan killed Holmes, then says that Ryan will have his chance to prove his innocence before he's taken away.
Micki and Jack finally arrive at the colony and see the Penitites gathering at the town hall. They go in and Laura tell them what Ryan is accused of. Jack figures the crowd is a lynch mob, and Josiah calls the hearing to order. Ryan mockingly says that he's no man of God, but Josiah continues and says that Ryan is accused of murder. Jack asks whose truth will be determined, and Josiah orders Jack and Micki removed.
Josiah then accuses Ryan of killing Holmes, and Ryan says that Matthew called him there. Fraser asks who killed Holmes, and Ryan insists that no one else was there and it's the Quilt. Ryan realizes that Josiah killed Holmes and accuses him as of much. Josiah says that it's God's court, but Ryan says that Josiah would benefit by Holmes' death. The reverend insists that he's the vessel of God's will, and sentences Ryan to die.
The Penitites drag Ryan out, and Laura tells Micki and Jack that Ryan will be burned at the stake. She yells to Ryan that she loves him, and Ryan says the same about her. He asks Laura to help him get the Quilt back, and she should go find it.
Laura goes to the house and searches for the Quilt, but fails to find it. Meanwhile, the Penitites take Ryan to the stake and tie him to it. Laura runs out and sees her father's footprints leading to the woodshed entrance.
Micki calls to Josiah, begging him to stop the execution. Josiah says that the Penitites have judged Ryan and they have their laws, and Ryan broke them. Jack figures that Josiah framed Ryan to eliminate two threats against him, and Josiah gives the order to light the fires. Ryan yells for help, professing his innocence, and Laura arrives and says that Josiah is the killer. She tosses the blanket out that Josiah wrapped Effie's corpse in. It's covered in blood, and Laura identifies it as the blanket that belonged to her mother, Josiah's first wife.
Laura tosses snow on the burning stake to put it out, and says that she found the bloody blanket on Effie's corpse in the woodshed. The Penitites help Laura put out the flames, while Josiah rants that Laura has fallen from God's grace. Laura says that they can look in the woodshed for proof of Josiah's guilt, and Fraser asks Josiah if the accusation is true. When Josiah doesn't answer, Fraser orders a search of the woodshed.
Some of the Penitites go with Fraser to the woodshed, and the rest ignore Josiah's orders to burn Ryan and Laura. Josiah rides off on his horse to get the Quilt, and Ryan and Laura take a carriage after him and the other Penitites follow. As the sun rises, Josiah goes to the town mill where he's hidden the Quilt and locks the door behind him. Ryan manages to break down the door, while Josiah gets the Quilt and yells to Ryan that his troubles will soon be over.
Ryan runs to the upper level where Josiah is, while Josiah wraps himself in the Quilt and dreams a nightmare. He forces Ryan to go to sleep, but Ryan first manages to grab the Quilt away from Josiah. Josiah attacks Ryan with a shovel and they struggle over the Quilt. Laura arrives, distracting Josiah long enough for Ryan to knock him back. She tells Ryan to let go of the Quilt, and when he does Josiah falls backward, out the window, and to his death. Micki, Jack, and the Penitites arrive and see Josiah's broken body. Ryan and Laura come out, and Ryan takes the Quilt from Josiah's dead hands and gives it to Jack. Laura, mourning her father's death, turns to Ryan.
Later, Ryan tells Laura that he has to go with Micki and Jack. He says that there's too much work remaining for him to do, and Laura understands. Ryan asks Laura to come with him, but she says that her work is to rebuild the colony now that Josiah is dead. She says that she learned a lot from Ryan and he's taught her about love. Ryan wishes he had never come there and known love, and Laura tells him that love is too rare to wish away. They hug and Ryan says goodbye, and goes to the car.
Laura calls to Ryan but he leaves without hearing her. Back at the shop, Ryan sits down, grief-stricken while holding his Penitite hat. He dozes off, and Micki comes in and sees the hat. She puts it on the sleeping Ryan's chest and puts his hand to it, and covers him with a quilt. Micki wishes Ryan sweet dreams and leaves. Behind her, Ryan wakes up from a nightmare.
