Witches of what?
nightroses16 October 2021
So calling it "Amityville Academy" wasn't enough to save this one. It was silly and the people in it were like cardboards. It isn't even horror, or fantasy. I don't even know what kind of film it is. An awful film with awful acting. It seems they've forgotten how to make decent films now.

Not all together a bad movie...
paul_haakonsen17 November 2020
Well, this 2020 movie having the word "Amityville" in it already made some alarms go off. Usually movies that have that word in the title tend to be dubious at best. There haven't been any proper horror movies with that name in the title for quite some time.

So it was with some reluctance that I sat down to watch "Witches of Amityville Academy" from writer Tom Jolliffe and director Rebecca Matthews, and I wasn't really having much of any high hopes or expectations to the movie, to be frank.

But I will say that "Witches of Amityville Academy" was actually not as bad as it could have been. Sure, this is by no means in the league of being an extraordinary horror movie, by no account. But there are far worse additions out there to the horror genre, so it wasn't all bad.

The storyline was pretty straightforward, actually to the point where it felt like director Rebecca Matthews was just running the show on auto-pilot. There weren't really any grand ups and downs along the way as the movie progressed, which made for a rather bland and monotonous storytelling.

Sure, the movie had a "Gilmore Girls" feel to it, and that was mostly because of casted actress Kira Reed Lorsch. And there was also a tingling at the back of my mind going: "this is very reminiscent of The Asylum trying to cash in on the 2020 remake of "The Craft"..."

The acting in the movie was adequate. I mean, it was not stellar performances, and some of the dialogue was delivered with lukewarm gusto, but all in all the performances were sufficient to carry the movie.

What surprised me about "Witches of Amityville Academy" was the special effects. While it wasn't blockbuster Hollywood CGI, the effects were actually good enough and definitely served their purposes and brought the movie to life in a satisfactory enough manner.

"Witches of Amityville Academy" was actually adequately entertaining for what it turned out to be. My rating of the movie settles on a four out of ten stars.

Run away! Run away!
Netjer-y-khet14 October 2020
Avoid this poor excuse for complete and utter rubbish. The real horror in this video is the acting, the dialog and the camera work. The acting is wooden and woeful. The complete range of facial expressions of the entire cast consists of catatonic stares occasionally interspersed with some kind of wry smile. The dialog is utterly lame. The camera work is atrocious. If you have the time to watch this garbage, you've got far too much time on your hands and ought to consider going outside to watch rocks grow instead. At least the time spent doing that will be more productive.

Total Garbge

Even "real true horror fans" will look at this is being a waste of time. Money spent on garbage! I really don't know where the talent has gone in the last few years. I remember b grade films in the 70's and 80's were 100 times better than the rubbish that is being made. In honesty, I give credit for those who have started out in the film making business but please, ensure that the actors can act! The lines spoken are believed. A lot of the dialogue in this film sounded rehearsed and at times, the acting was too much. Either there is not enough or the actors go overboard.

I am going back to re-watch all the great old films that were made. Not giving anymore time to these awful and embarrassing movies that are now being created.

Artless Nonsense

Want to waste your time on a movie with zero character development so you have no investment in any of the people? Want to see wooden characters forced to act out mindless power struggles and empty dialogue? If you like things such as the Power Ranger kids show or Pokémon, you'll find that this immature one-dimensional magic power contest is entertaining.

I can break the spell
nogodnomasters24 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Jessica is summoned to the Amityville Academy. She is to become a human sacrifice to the demon Botis to free him so he can help the demon Potus destroy the world. She is saved by the good witches and is trained. Jessica is special.

There isn't much action. Much of the action is witches holding hands chanting at each other. The Jessica learning period seemed real time slow. That is why everyone who trains does so in a 3 minute music montage. It is boring to watch witches talk about spells. I don't know of any witches hung at Amityville but in the next film (please don't make another one) they go to Salem. They needed a horror name in the film, Lin Shaye, Dee Wallace, or Debbie Rochon even. The acting was bad and plot slow. Facial close-ups of snarls was funny on pause.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

After laughing so hard i started doing similar facial expressions to the witches .

Did they have constipation , because i swear most scenes looked that way

If you want a laugh , watch this , not for the comedy , but the acting ! Bizzare , obscure , strange , cringey & cringey & more cringe . I could not concentrate on the characters because of the amount of botox & fillers in the woman , it just distracted me , !!!

Had to watch till the end , but i will never get that time back again, cant believe AMAZON platformed this train wreck . Whats happened ? Back in the day low budget were still brilliant !

simplistic and low budget but not that bad
carrychris17 February 2021
The film suffered from an ultra low budget and poor acting and simplistic plot. I might be generous rating it a four. I would give it *1/2 stars out of **** Stars. only thing saving it from a 3 rating or a one star rating is the decent chemistry between the cast and a plot that although is anti climatic with an anti climatic ending did have something intangible that might make it a watch for non discriminating viewers of this genre. just take it for what it is.

Wow -- a somewhat OK Amityville movie!
BandSAboutMovies21 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"The Belle Witches have to revisit their magical talents to deter the evil Dominique Marcom from trying to raise the demon Botis into the world."

You may read the sell line from this and wonder -- a movie with an alternate title of Witches of Amityville Academy -- "Is this an Amityville movie?" And i"m wondering, "Are all movies Amityville movies?" Because at this point, I feel like I'm in a non-Faustian bargain. I feel compelled to watch all of these movies and really get no reward.

After receiving an acceptance letter from Dominique's (Amanda Jade-Tyler, who is in the upcoming Amityvole Scarecrow 2 and oh no, I have to watch that one as well) prestigious Amityville Academy for witches, Jessica (Sarah T. Cohen, who was in Hellkat and Medusa) soon learns that only the Belle Witches can save her from a demon. A demon named Bortis who is also known as Otis -- I am not making that up -- and is discussed in the Lesser Key of Solomon as a President and an Earl who initially appears as a viper before changing into a sword-toting, fanged and horned human who likes to talk about the past, present and future. He also rules 60 legions of demons.

The good witches of this movie all definitely shop at Ann Taylor Loft and Pottery Barn because they look late 40s attractive upper class -- I'd say South Hills but yinz aren't all from Pittsburgh -- and they just like to chill and sip on tea and gossip. Sam (Kira Reed Lorsch, Chained Heat 2001: Slave Lovers and on Playboy's Sexcetera before being an early internet adult adopter and creating Married Couple Live with her husband in the early 2000s), Ellena (Brittan Taylor, Space Girls in Beverly Hills) and Lucy (Donna Spangler, who was The Coal Miner's Daughter in the wrestling group POWW and also played Hugs Higgins in the Andy Sidaris movie Guns, Mee-Shell in Dinosaur Valley Girls and Katanna in Space Girls in Beverly Hills) are those Belle Witches and they're fabulous.

Director Rebecca Matthews (The Candy Witch, Pet Graveyard) and writer Tom Jolliffe (Jurassic Island) have done the impossible: they've made a non-Amityville Amityville movie that didn't make me question why I do this. I'm all for a web series of the Belle Witches where they bemoan the closing of Chicco's in their mall or battle a series of zombie Karens or just sit around and drink tea and talk about their husbands.

Has enough to be worthwhile but still has some flaws
kannibalcorpsegrinder19 March 2023
Arriving at a special boarding school, a woman finds that her mysterious acceptance was due to the vengeful headmistress who wants to use her witchcraft powers for her own means, and after escaping turns to a series of good witches to fight back against their nefarious plans.

There were some enjoyable elements to be had here. Among its better elements is the rather fun storylines here that offer a better build-up than expected. Getting to know the various witches and their personalities, their backstory about needing to be kept a secret from the rest of the world as well as the new girl at the school with her insecurities and hangups has some intriguing aspects involved. It all works nicely with the brief glimpses we get to understand the witches and their side of the conflict. As well, the film works quite nicely with the grand decision to reveal the plan from the start where this one unleashed the goal almost immediately. From the revelation of their plan going for the abduction and sacrifice that signals what's going on in grand fashion, this is a shocking start to the coven's plans and leads to the other witches taking her in and explaining the situation that gives context to what happened. Getting the few attempts to stop her from understanding with the failed attacks on their protected hideout is a fun way to add some action to this setup. The other really enjoyable aspect is the final half where a lot of the action gets a bit more involved. As the plan is revealed and the race to stop the witches from stopping her, the plan to ensure her success means the fun kidnapping plan under the guise of the hallucinogenic nightmares means this one gets fun leading into the series of confrontations with the students and the ritual she attempts to perform at the same time leading to the action-packed finale where they overcome the forces rather nicely. All told, these all manage to make this one quite enjoyable although this one does have a few issues with it. The first drawback is the extremely quick tempo that never gives this one a chance to really tell its story, focusing on these unexplained tactics to gain power for something we don't get until the third act. This makes the events at first confusing without much in the way of context, much like the rationale for constantly leaving them alive which just seems to allow them a chance to show up later to flip their plans even though the opportunity presents itself several times. Alongside the tameness of the film with no blood or gore, these are the few flaws here.

Rated Unrated/R: Violence and Language.

AmityvilleWitches
gavcrimson17 October 2020
As if Suspiria was remade as a CBBC show, if you can imagine such a thing. The material often suggests this would have worked better as comedic romp rather than a straight horror film. Aside from the odd throat slashing, the genre elements here are notably less intense than the director's earlier films Pet Graveyard and The Candy Witch. It's a slight but not unlikable film, the actresses playing the white witches are a particularly charismatic trio.

Really not worth watching: pretty annoying
phillipjosephgioan28 March 2024
Horrible wooden acting on the level of a middle school play, cringe dialog, terrible special effects, a trite storyline, camera work is meh. There's nothing scary or compelling about this. Basically feels like someone paid a bunch of illiterate suburban sorority sisters $15/hr to dress up as witches and read dialog from a cardboard que sheet. I don't understand how a horrible film like this gets funding? Who read the story and dialog for this and was like "yeah, send it!"? Why was no one like "okay, now, repeat that line without sounding like a robot"? Definitely one of the worst movies I've seen in awhile -- and I love terrible b movies.
