Seeing it Live Put the Special in Perspective for Me
ashtonsan25 September 2019
Yes, not making that up, I was among the 10 - 11 thousand people in the American Airlines arena on June 21st, 2019.

Though technically comedians film over the course of two days so they can cross-edit footage if something goes wrong, they chose the night I was there for the alpha roll. I know this because a few unscripted moments within the final cut happened on our night. There's so much we don't see when big comedians prepare and produce these specials. The actual event was over 2 hours, so about half the show was cut out. It felt like being on a movie set, as time after time they would stop, start, adjust Jeff's clothing, and even redo entire jokes. In fact, a lot of the laughs at the beginning of Bubba J's segment was edited for the final cut, as Jeff had to completely restart that bit, and people had trouble laughing with the same level of enthusiasm as the first time (and yes there were other instances where the laughing was "fixed"). Jeff seemed rather nervous that night. Whether it was because he was in his hometown of Dallas, or the fact that the event was for a Netflix special, or both, I don't know. Half the stopping and starting was due to him losing his train of thought or bad line deliveries (as himself, he had no trouble at all when talking through the puppets). But this issue actually illustrated his authenticity in trying to deliver the best show he could give his audience, even when the puppets weren't talking.

Now onto the special itself. There was a certain electicity in the arena, and it definitely carried over into the final cut. If there was any splicing between nights, I couldn't perceive it, so the editing team did a fatastic job. The classic puppets (Walter, Bubba J, Peanut, Jose, and Achmed) were hilarious, though I'd argue they're even funnier in real life. I won't spoil them, but as stated earlier, there were unscripted goofs that Jeff made, but he played them off so well that they made the show even more of a scream. The main critique I have for the special (hense the 8/10 rating) is the introduction of the new puppet Larry the White House Twitter Advisor. Though I and everyone else in the arena were genuinely laughing at certain jokes, they definitely lifted the volume in post for others. Without getting into politics, Larry is basically Peanut if he were human and had insomnia. He talked similarly to Peanut, his moves were almost identical to Peanut's, and his joke delivery was also reminiscent. Now obviuosly all the puppets have their "connective tissue" to each other because they're all voiced by Jeff, but Larry was WAY too similar. Half the time I was watching him I kept picturing Peanut in a suit. If he had introduced a different character, or brought back one of his legacy characters like Melvin the Superhero, I think the show could easily have been a 9.

Overall, the live show was an amazing experience, and the Netflix special is both funny and well put together. I hope to see another comedian live again, as this put into perspective just how hard comedians work to make something awesome and funny :)

A hilarious mixed bag
adamallskog25 September 2019
Loved this special, as far as Jeff Dunham goes it's up there with his best work. I will say some jokes feel a bit off, especially with achmed but as a whole this had me laughing my stick off.

Played very smart

This is what a stand up comedy should look like. You could tell that Jeff put a lot of work into it. He stayed away from politics directly but used his puppets to get his message across. It was beautifully done and I thought it was not only funny but something only few comedians do these days. Loved it.

Way too many camara focus switches. I wasnt able to watch past 20minutes. The content was ok... but wasnt worth the effort to keep the focus over such editing

Great show, funny as always
khansaeed-2153926 September 2019
Jeff Dunham kills it again, since it was just released i won't give anything away, but since Dave Chappelle's and Bill Burr's specials, im pretty sure PC culture will find a way to make this show terrible, but i promise you it is funny. I recommend this to everyone, you will laugh your ass off

"Yes, these well disguised jokes are how we keep our show family friendly".
classicsoncall12 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I hope I'm not getting jaded with Jeff Dunham's brand of humor because he's a funny and talented guy. His first two specials, "Arguing With Myself" (2006) and "Spark of Insanity" (2007) were very good and because he was a fresh face, his stuff was quite original and clever. It was around 2017's "Relative Disaster" that I began to think he was introducing too much vulgarity into his routine. I'm not a prude, but I know he can be funny without it, and if you'd like to take your kid to a show or watch along on TV, the experience could be uncomfortable. This one had the old curmudgeon Walter talking about vagina voodoo and penis power, and there was liberal use of the 'f' bomb by multiple characters, including Bubba J, Peanut, Jose Jalapeno on a Stick, and Achmed the Dead Terrorist. One new character introduced was Larry, as personal adviser to President Trump, a bit that could have gone south quickly if Dunham didn't walk that fine line between being critical and supportive. Larry observed that his handler would lose half his audience if he went too far either way, and the balancing act worked out pretty well, although when Larry offered a highly complimentary line for Trump, the bulk of the audience signaled their approval. Even so, the general tenor of the show seemed not quite up to Dunham's better performances. The best bit seemed to be when Dunham dropped Peanut and he had to ad-lib a dialog with the puppet for the crowd. And notwithstanding the comment made by Walter in my summary line above, the rest of the show had many moments that weren't all that family friendly.

Finally a funny show in comedy. How dare he?
boboceaelena28 September 2019
Finally a comedy show where you can really laugh instead of ones where you are asking yourself if that it was to be a joke or the punch.

Low-hanging fruit
SureCommaNot6 December 2019
Jeff Dunham is worth seeing once. The jokes themselves are low-hanging fruit (I've seen more-creative jokes on popsicle sticks, and honestly could often predict what jokes Jeff / the puppets were about to make, and many of the jokes have already been told by other comedians), but still Jeff is a talented-enough ventriloquist with a knack for contriving some memorable characters. ("Spark of Insanity" made them memorable, but everything I said about Jeff's comedy applies to that one too. As a ventriloquist I rate him an A+ for diction and a B+ for all other aspects of the technique, but as a comic I give him, appropriately, a C.)

Yup, that made me laugh
kelzerman26 September 2019
Usually, I turn off Jeff Dunham after his solo stand up and before he gets the dolls. Most of the time I find the jokes and sounds of the dolls the same and a bit dull after a while. This time he brought a new friend, Larry. He is the advisor of president Trump. A good addition to this cast. The other puppets have new jokes and different acts that makes this one hour show worth the watch.

Worth the watch. I can already see the leftist snowflakes spilling their soy milk, but they do not matter. At all. Watch it twice.

Solid comedy special although Jeff has done better.
muamba_eats_toast26 September 2019
Not his best work but still pretty damn hilarious. Would like to see the characters get more equal timing or just more each in general. An hour and a half would have been perfect.

I was surprised that the adults in the audience were laughing, it seemed more suited for kids - or simply it's that stupid

I'am not laughing
mariakalya25 March 2022
The only reason for me for not laughing when watching this show, it's because the jokes were too smart. And playing a few characters with different personality is not an easy thing.

Made an echo, sound effects, accents, and gesture?! It definitely took years to master.

Disappointed with language
youngcreative9 October 2019
Jeff Dunham used to be a family favorite until his last few specials. The increased use of the F-word (especially with Peanut) has made it so we can no longer enjoy his comedy in our home. Also, ewer sexual jokes would not hurt. We're confident that Jeff could still be hilarious and clean because he used to be that way.

Walters Woman 😂
karenlorraine-0654221 November 2023
With Jeff not playing the Female Character Puppet Voice to go along with it! We always hear about Walters Wife! & How much she's admired.... lol! But We Never See Her ..... 😆 instead We Should Be Saying: Where's Walters...Wife?? Instead Of Where's Waldo! 😂... It would be something to hear that change of Voice with that added Puppet Character we've been hearing about! Jeff Dunham is extremely Talented I'm sure maybe he can come up with that Voice that can come together with the description with that Puppet Walter describes! I'm sure a lot of his audiences would get a kick out of it seeing Walter combined with his significant other lol.

Funniest thing we have ever watched
leerevell-6954920 October 2021
Jeff Dunham is the best, funniest and cleverest person we have ever watched on TV. The characters are awesome, the act is amazing and we were falling around laughing for days.

He gets better and better on every new show and worth watching over and over again.

Keep PC away from comedy
Terryfan11 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
PC has really ruin entertainment and this is the proof when you got comedians who can't make a joke that they are used to.

Jeff Dunham shows that when he try to make jokes that are PC makes them forced and I barely laugh at this show only about four times I chuckle other than that I am very disappointed.

Comedy is about making jokes and all of sudden we got snowflakes cry babies who get their feelings over jokes and Jeff you should be ashamed that you chose this path when it comes to making jokes. All you did was ruin your puppet characters and took away the fun of watching this comedy.

So if you want to get a good laugh you be better off avoiding this comedy

Jeff Dunham: Beside Himself gets a 4 out of 10.

The recipe is starting to wear thin...
paul_haakonsen3 March 2021
I just sat through the 2019 Netflix special "Jeff Dunham: Beside Himself", and I must say that if you have seen any of the previous many shows, then it feels like you've already also seen this 2019 special.

Sure, "Jeff Dunham: Beside Himself" was watchable, but after all these years, the routine is just wearing thin and running on routine. I guess there is only so much material you can squeeze out of a handful of puppets on a stage.

It is not that Jeff Dunham isn't funny or that he doesn't have good jokes and material, because he does. But the ventriloquism is starting to wear thin; the sparkle of the puppets is starting to lose its luster. I am not say that because I don't enjoy his shows, because I do, but I am saying it because that is how I have felt for the past 2 or 3 shows, and "Jeff Dunham: Beside Himself" just cemented it further.

If you are a fan of Jeff Dunham, I am sure that you will like this 2019 special as well. And yeah, it is a fun enough watch, but it is just not something that I would invest more time into and sit down to watch a second time around.

My rating of "Jeff Dunham: Beside Himself" lands on a mediocre five out of ten stars.

His strong political views were obvious throughout the entire act. This is the last time I will spend money to see him or even watch him and support his views.

The now had been.
MikeHunt107525 January 2021
Jeff rose to his peak after his segment with Achmed the dead terrorist went viral. But once that fad began to fade, so has his career. It doesn't take long to realise the special mentioned was the peak, and everything has been going downhill since. The same routines and recycled jokes get stale very quickly, and the same old gags feel lackluster now.

One of the dumbest things this guy dud was reveal in a bonus feature that what looks to be an unplanned accident on stage, is infact planned. It makes it feel cheap he'd sink that low to fake a moment. It's as eye rolling now as watching the "outake" left in Mrs Brown's Boys that's as believable now as Michael Jackson's innocence.

Give it a few more years and we will see a bonus feature of Jeff lying about why he is playing a RSL club with 50 people in the audience is some nonsense about wanting to get back to his roots... Yeah, no. People just aren't interested in the same routine over and over next to a smiling face secretly saying "keep giving me money, I don't wanna go back to working 9-5"
