ugh

Warning: Spoilers
Really wasnt what i expected. Majority of the movie is about one woman who cant catch a break because she comes from a broken home and constantly puts herself into sticky situations. She makes obvious bad decisions, as a viewer i found it hard to believe anyone would make such stupid choices. It was hard to feel bad for her. 99% of the movie is basically a drama about her life while she is communicating with a mysterious woman, who claimed to be the author of a famous book, but was later proven to be a liar, and is just some random stranger.

The character knows this but continues talking to them. Another stupid decision. And then when we finally get the meat and potatoes of why i even decided to watch this, it happens at the very end, and we dont even see anything just a loud sound effect. Very irritating. They gave us this huge build up and it leads to nothing. I get what they were trying to do but still.

We hear voice overs of this character and katie, while they type online, and sometimes it was hard to tell whose voice it was, cause they sound so similar.

Not worth your time
paul-allaer3 April 2022
As "Another Girl" (2021 release; 95 min.) opens, we get to know Elle, a 20-something woman. She just finished a fiction book written by Katie, one of the book's characters. For reasons unknown, Katie has a website where one can email her. Elle decides to email Katie. Some days late, lo and behold, Katie responds! How is that possible? Just as Elle is getting super excited, the book's publisher emails Elle that this was all fake... At this point we are 15 min into the movie.

Couple of comments: this is the movie adaptation of the book of the same name by Allison Burnett (in fact, a guy). Burnett also directs the film. I had never heard of this Allison Burnett before, or of the book. I cam only tell you what I experienced while watching this. Bottom line: it was not a good experience. The story didn't make any sense whatsoever. To market this as a "thriller" is frankly misleading. It feels more like a YA story. Samantha Hanratty plays the lead role of Elle, and tries with the weak material she is given. She of course also stars in the recent (and very enjoyable) mini-series "Yellowjackets". Please note: I never realized while watching this film that it is in fact a sequel to an earlier film called "Undiscovered Gyrl". I only found out about it when I looked up Allison Burnett after seeing this. I have no idea if I would've enjoyed this better had I seen the prior film. I kinda doubt it.

"Another Film was suggested to me by Showtime, presumably because I recently watched "What Breaks the Ice", which I quite enjoyed. Turns out to be an erroneous recommendation! But hey, don't take my word for it, so check out "Another Girl", and draw your own conclusion.

Are we all watching the same movie?
jenniferstevens-0066714 September 2021
Honestly this was terrible, some of the things that come out of the protagonists mouth "what do you eat when you bleed?" Women do not talk like this to each other it was cringe. I did not like any of the characters, they behaved so odd and unbelievable. The idea behind it has something interesting to it but the actual conversations and decisions the characters make is infuriating and laughable.

Awful film
dzzbtkwx3 January 2022
I just created an IMDb account to write this review-that's how strongly I feel about this film.

I cannot believe other reviews of this movie are real. The plot has no coherence. It's 1.5 hours of various scenes depicting a depressed girl's life. Most of the dialogue has no purpose other than to fill screen time and the conclusion of the film is incredibly disappointing. Super cringe too-at one point the main character says "if you liked vagina this night would end much differently" to a gay guy.

The fact that this film is called a "thriller" is incredibly misleading. It comes across as an a amateur film student's thesis drama film. Do NOT recommend.

Pass!!
tdtrower11 December 2021
The main character is ridiculously naive. And the writer(s) are obsessed with race. The amount of times that race, specifically Black people, is mentioned in this movie for no reason at all is weird af and it makes me wonder if white people are like this in real life. It's embarrassing and obsessive.

WOW! 13 Perfect Scores in the Month of September...!!!
jm-vincent22 December 2021
Come on people, if you're going to lie about the worth of a flick in order to con people into watching it, don't cluster all of the lies in one month. And don't make them all a perfect score. At best this flick is disposable, at worst it is a waste of the viewer's time. When I make a mistake I admit it. (Maybe my parents raised me too well...). The bottom line is that this...thing...is mediocre at best, but those scoring it beyond a 2 or 3 (a 1 to me) are either lying outrageously to pump up the score or completely delusional. In the former case they are idiots deserving of contempt; in the latter case they are in need of real help. A final word of advice to IMDB followers: Always look for the lowest scores as an honest start to evaluation....

Author doesn't understand women at all
cmdking17 January 2022
Have you ever had a conversation w/ someone you knew thought you were a total idiot? That is this story. A man who definitely thinks women are stupid wrote about stupid women, badly. Sad to watch.

This movie should be called, "Stereotypes"
vnssyndrome899 May 2022
From the giggly, naive white girl, to the fashion tip gay guys, to the accent having cad, to the physically present non-parents, to the sassy black friend, to the semi racist white people - this movie is nothing but disgusting stereotypes RUN AMOK! I'm watching it hoping everyone will DIE!

And to every person of a different stripe who wonders if people really talk or act like this when they're not around, the answer is NO! Not every gay guy has styling tips, not every person with an accent is either a cad or a hillbilly, not every young black girl is "world-wise" with life tips, not every parent is absent in mind, if not in body, and not every middle class white girl is a vulnerable, sexually available cutter. What middle aged white guy wrote this garbage (HA - SEE WHAT I DID THERE?)

It's time to wake up people! WE'RE ALL OF THE SAME RACE! THE HUMAN RACE! And derisive, divisive drek like this, is NOT A HELP TO ANYONE, even if it was entertaining (which it isn't).

(PS Also, just on a personal note, stop adding to millennial movies, music that sounds like it's right out of the '90's. Hey kids! Get your own stuff (music, fashion, movies etc & quit ripping off ours!)

Wasn't a bad film
hisui-4312015 September 2021
I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie but it wasn't bad. Had some good moments. The narration was a bit odd though and sometimes I couldn't tell who was actually talking as they both sounded very similar. My fav part was Dave, love Peter as an actor since QOTS. Without him would I have enjoyed it as much? Maybe not but was pretty good.

WASTE OF TIME
StarrKitty7 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't see the first movie and frankly I was surprised that there was a first movie being that this one doesn't have any answers at the end to anything. I went and read the synopsis of the first movie. I feel like I wasted an hour and a half just to end up without any answers to who she was talking to and why anything was happening. I really and sincerely hope that they are not going to make a third movie that makes even less sense than this one. What's the point of making a sequel that ends the same way as the first one?

Great story!
beatrizyanovich15 September 2021
The movie kept me enthralled and the end was so well done and unexpected. The lead actress is excellent. I had not see her before but understand she was a child when she started her carrier.

a beautiful shot...
ops-5253515 September 2021
Movie of an estranged kind of life , for the grumpy old man to phatom due to 2 generation of technological and sociological development that has passed me by in the sideglance, and a story about the introvertiness and dependency on digital devices to maintain a full worth lifestyle, spiced up with sex and beauty, peppered with some mental issues, pretty intense psychology that might be hard to swallow for some viewers, because this is a more common lifestory among the young ones than you think.

Its voices in the head, its selfharming, even suicide attempts, its the constant feeling of being controlled and punished by the ones you unfold your life for, a splendid mix of fact of fiction and desillusions. But the story ends unfortunatelly in a big wet thundery question style, could that mean a secondary sequele will come in the near future???

Well its filmographical quality are amazing, so is the musical score, and the physical acts by the main cast. So if you feel bewildered in the start , youll be even worse in the end, its hard to seperate facts from fiction, and a tiny little timeline could easily have helped a lot, cause there are some flashback to put in the trolly. Even though that said, you wont get braindamaged to watch this, cause its actuality in true life excists. A should see movie for all under 40. A recommend.

Here's The Answer to The Ending, I Think.
braggnull18 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The only way I could make any sense of this mess of a film was to assume that "Katie," Elle's mysterious "pen pal," was actually the creepy looking night clerk of the motel, who somehow knew that "Katie" was not present in the room adjacent to Elle. What actually happens to Ellie after she opens the door to her room at the end is not shown, but we must assume she was done in by "Katie," who then goes on to contact other naive girls via e-mail. Presumably, they will all wind up at the same motel late at night to be told the same thing by the night manager. None of the characters in the film were likable save for the Gay brother and his lover.

Fast Forwarded so only wasted 45 minutes.
goldseeker-3132916 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Boring and self indulgent. The other woman really does not exist. Terrible ending, worse than most. Waste of time. I guess they think texting an unseen character who does not exist is somehow interesting. The lead actress looks to young to be in college and out in the working world. Overall very boring and pointless.

Misogyny ISO a rationale
jdamato-748889 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Another Girl is an adventure in misogyny. The purpose of the action is to construct a rationale for how Elle, the protagonist, goes from the death of her father by drug overdose when she was 9 to being unceremoniously disposed of herself in the climax. Scene after scene along the way lays the foundation for the idea that women drive men to commit heinous acts. If Elle hadn't been so flirtatious and loose, she wouldn't have been beaten up by her football playing boyfriend in her freshman year of college. If Elle's lover's wife hadn't been an alcoholic who ignored her husband's sexual needs, he wouldn't have had to stray on her. If that same woman hadn't threatened to leave her husband after Elle had forwarded intimate pics of herself with her husband to her, the husband wouldn't have had to beat her up and put her in the hospital. In the end, Elle gets what is coming to her. As she doubtless drove her father to his drug overdose, now her lack of principles (an accusation made in so many words by her gay brother), flirtatiousness and loose morals have driven Everyman to end her in an anonymous motel room.

But it's not boring.

1 out of 10 for ethos. 9 out of 10 for aesthetics. So 5 out of 10.

Typical man hating rubbish
artyom_aa5 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I sniffed it out from the beginning and by the end, I was disgusted. The amount of hate and demonization of men throughout this waste of time movie is abhorrent. Now the storyline is a bit interesting but the end was foolish. Now let's talk about characters. Our protagonists character is so poorly written its laughable. There are so many contradictions and inconsistencies, specially towards the end. From being paranoid to being unreasonably careless. What about her elder brother who was so caring and sweet but them completely abandons her for hurting his friend's wife?? He doesn't even know Carmen. As for Dave, I guess he's just a typical bad man who just wants to take advantage of every girl out there. What an absolutely shameful narrative!

You can tell from the first scene that this film was made from the heart. It's not your standard Hollywood fare, and that makes it special. Story! Characters! Writing!

Fantastic Movie! Allison Burnett has made another wonderful movie
prettyeyez-0832714 September 2021
This movie is the sequel to Undiscovered Gyrl, (movie name "Ask Me Anything"). From the very beginning you can pick up that Elle is troubled and she reaches out to a fictitious character after reading the first book. Even though the author even tells her that Katie (the girl from the book) is not real she still keeps writing to the person and telling her story, which is in fact a very sad story. She believes she has found a friend in the fake Katie Kampenfelt. She ignores the red flags (that Katie always has an excuse, she won't give out her phone number, etc.) . In this movie you can really get to see how being desperate for someone to talk to can ultimately have some bad consequences. And it leaves you with questions so you can decide what happened yourself with what was shown. Ultimately it's a great movie that is enjoyable, and makes you think at the same time. I would definitely recommend watching it.

never heard of the director but...
coyotepoo26 September 2021
Both the writing and directing are very good, especially for an indie film. The actors are flawless this kid, Allison Burnett, I'm assuming the director is a girl, should be directing bigger movies. Hollywood stars crave this kind of writing/directing. Apparently she's a novelist. I didn't read the book but the movie was awesome...and I think it must be terrifying to be a young girl these days. Good job!

Loved this movie!
kellijonicholas19 September 2021
I love Allison Burnett's writing and couldn't wait for this sequel to Undiscovered Girl (movie title Ask Me Anything with Britt Robertson, Christian Slater & Martin Sheen). It did not disappoint! Sammi Hanratty was thoroughly engaging as a young girl making bad choices in this dark, creepy thriller. The soundtrack was amazing, check it out!
