Don't let the bad reviews put you off, it's actually a pretty good story
mateus_bf7 December 2020
"Desalma", the new series from Globoplay, has its flaws (there's no such a thing as a "perfect" series), but it's not the horrible thing some people here are trying to depict. It's a damn good series for brazilians who are looking for good quality national production with an outstanding cinematography and a consistent plot. It is also very good for foreigners who want to learn Portuguese, because the lines are delivered in an unhurried way.

Some people are comparing Desalma with Dark, the German hit series. Well, there are some similarities between both, but it mostly has to do with tropes and cliches of their genre. It does not mean Desalma is copying Dark (something that some people are accusing). I believe the main similarities are: both are mysteries (but Dark have a science fiction tendency and Desalma has a fantasy tendency); both are set in a small town (but that is a very common trait in mystery stories since Twin Peaks); both start with a suicide (which is a common topic in mystery stories). They also share a resemblance in its atmosphere and tone, but I believe it is because they hired Alexander Würtz, the sound editor of Dark, to work as a consultant.

"Desalma" is a mystery, but it revolves around fantasy, magic, folklore and witchcraft (unlike Dark, which revolves around time travel and science fiction), mostly about myths and legends that the Ukrainian immigrants who founded Brigida (the city where the story is set) brought from their native land.

The main flaw of this series is the acting. Most secondary actors gave a poor performance, only delivering the lines without really getting into their characters. But most of the main actors and actresses had a great performance, specially Cassia Kis (the witch Haia), Maria Ribeiro (Giovana Skavronski) and another character that would be a spoiler if I talk about...

The first episodes are kind of slow, but if you can get over them, the story becomes very gripping, with a quite good cliffhanger in the last episode. I'm already waiting for Season 2.

P.S.: Sorry for eventual bad English and for the excess of parentheses, but I can't keep from doing it when writing reviews.

Overall it was very good

Warning: Spoilers
Watching the 2nd season of DESALMA, a Brazilian horror series.

I think the screenwriters went nuts, mixing Wicca with Rasputin of the Romanovs and even the poor Helena Blavatsky.

But let's go ahead because overall it's good. Fábio Assunção's character promises... The female cast, led by Cássia Kiss, who continues to shine. I finished season 2. A few scares and a lot of horror movie clichés but... as I said, overall it was good.

Now it's time to wait for the 3rd and final season and find out what Fábio Assunção is like as a centenarian wizard, condemned to live forever.

And knowing the fate of Cláudia Abreu's character, who seems to me to be the head witch of the area.

Besides, it's always good to appreciate Cassia Kiss's work.

Despite the poorly made Jumpscare, the series delivers a good suspense and represents Brazilian terror.

A series of terror that delivers a beautiful photograph and a great sound. Having the brilliant Cássia Kiss in the cast only shows jenuidity and originality in a genre of series so little explored in the country. Of course, with its defects as unnecessary and poorly made jumpsscares. The series is able to hold and create tension even with these problems.

Simply bad

Warning: Spoilers
I'm a Brazilian who happens to be a horror genre fan. As everybody knows, it's not easy to produce good horror, especially nowadays - unless you don't wanna take yourself seriously. As I came to understand, Globo's production for TV shows are quite superb, so I was looking forward to this series. It does try to take itself seriously, unsettlingly.

I was hugely let down. It's not only because it's not done properly as a horror production, but mainly due to bad scripting, directing and acting. I remember Claudia Abreu being a great actress and yes, she does have her moments here - but the person who directed her parts dealing with the horror factor really had no clue about it. Also, the often forced, unnatural dialogue does not help her and many others at all. It's hilarious listening her say, with an accent from Rio, "I grew up in this village and never left" when the town is located on the South, where the accent is completely different. Speaking of which, they do have some Southern actors and they sometimes do decently, but nothing really outstanding. Nathália Falcão does a better job amongst the teens. There are many cringeworthy moments from scenes where people just talk to each other. Cassia Kis is on a whole unique level herself and she does not disappoint, though. Her motives and overall wording sadly breaks any chance of this being a successful act.

The "twist" at the end with the cliffhanger did not work because it became obvious at some point that the "witch" wanted things to go a particularly way. The slow burn was a chore to keep up with and there were scenes that, well, how can I put this nicely: they're just not good.

I think it's impressive that nowadays some things really get greenlighted worldwide. You see it everywhere. It's people doing a specific job they shouldn't be doing. They could have someone check the story, the dialogue, the horror factor - heck, even the cultural approach they took regarding Ukraine, which is sometimes beautiful in the show but lacks depth. It just didn't feel natural. Also, it was very idiotic how the witch's daughter was upset about the boy she liked being gay, it felt out of place for her - it made no sense. Did I just say that? Oh, there are many more instances of nonsense here. You can start anywhere, help isn't needed.

With all that said, the series sparkled debate regarding "viralatismo", something that would have to do with Brazilians always feeling like anything outside the country is automatically better - thus, blindly criticizing anything just because it comes from our country. Even though this exists and this show received quite a lot of nonsense from the audience, with some even comparing it with Dark (German Netflix show - it has nothing to do with it, by the way), I wanna say this is not the case here. I gave it a chance like I do with any Brazilian productions as long as they interest me - and I can gladly affirm 2020 brought amazing shows in Kissing Game or Good Morning Veronica, for example, but this it not the case for this show. Classic actresses and a beautiful scenery will not save anything from the cliches of horror and boring, dull writing. There's a long, long way to go if you do not follow the right paths by simply caring for standards when exploring any genre to explore. Invest your time elsewhere.

Cringeworthy, unbearable to watch
reviewerB17 March 2021
Slow paced, terrible acting, unconvincing dialogues, with implausible wording and cringy delivery. The only truly horrifying scenes are the ones in the pig slaughterhouse. That is, indeed, true and absolutely gratuitous horror for anyone with a dash of sensitivity regarding animal cruelty. For all these reasons, I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes.

Slow paced

Globo still don't know how to do a non soup-opera show. A lot of cliches, they talk a lot about traditions, curses, but nothing really happens. I gave up after episode 4.
