R.I.P. Quibi, again.
It seems even the Roku Channel is not free from The Great Streaming Purge of the 2020s. According to a report in Variety, over 35 notable Roku Original shows are to be removed from the streaming service sometime in the near future. This comes after multiple other services have removed shows and movies, many of them high-profile releases, from their feeds in order to cut costs. HBO Max — now merely Max — infamously removed a lot of their original films back in August of 2022, while multiple TV shows and movies were taken off of Hulu and Disney+ in May of 2023 for similar reasons. One might assume that a free, ad-supported service like the Roku Channel would be free from the caprices of the streaming market, but that is not so. The line of Roku Originals will be brought to an end.
Roku Originals, some may recall, were not Roku originals.

“Most Dangerous Game” and the Zoe-Lister-Jones-led “Slip” are among a handful of existing licensed and produced shows being removed by Roku. The company also plans to lay off staff. Roku is the latest streamer to purge content from its platform to cut costs, following similar moves by Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max, Disney and AMC Networks.
The Christoph Waltz and Liam Hemsworth-led “Most Dangerous Game,” originally created for Quibi by Nick Santora, earned two Emmy nominations for its first season. Roku renewed the action thriller for a second season, which premiered in March.
“Critically acclaimed, heartfelt, hilarious, and completely unique, ‘Slip’ has only begun to spark the imaginations and bend the minds of audiences around the world,” Boat Rocker Media co-executive chairman Ivan Schneeberg and David Fortier told TheWrap. The Zoe Lister-Jones-led comedy was produced by Boat Rocker and Dakota Johnson’s TeaTime Pictures. “We’re incredibly proud...

We’ve seen multiple streaming companies remove titles from their service over the last year in a bid to save money, and Deadline has reported that Roku has joined them. The outlet reports that Roku has begun removing a handful of titles from their service, including Most Dangerous Game starring Christoph Waltz.
Most Dangerous Game began life as a Quibi Original (remember that mess?) before it was salvaged by Roku, who renewed the series for a second season. After learning that he will soon die from a terminal illness and desperate to provide for his pregnant wife, Dodge Maynard (Liam Hemsworth) accepts an invitation from a mysterious man (Christoph Waltz) to participate in a deadly game of survival. Each hour Dodge survives will earn him more money, for a total of $24.5 million if he survives the full 24 hours.

Exclusive: Roku has begun removing titles including scripted shows Most Dangerous Game starring Christoph Waltz and Slip from Zoe Lister-Jones.
It is the latest streamer to remove titles from its service following similar moves by Paramount+, Disney+, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max and AMC Networks.
Roku revealed yesterday that it was set to remove some content as part of a cost-cutting drive that also saw around 300 employees laid off. It said that it would take a hit of between $55M-$65M for removing “select existing licensed and produced content from company-operated services on its TV streaming platform”.
The company will, however, continue to order original series and sources note that this process is part of its regular review of programming.

With the debut of Quibi, the short form categories at the Emmys may never be the same. The launch of the mobile streaming service hasn’t exactly been smooth: There were early questions about its business plan and whether consumers would want to pay for such content when free platforms including YouTube exist, subscriptions have already been far below expectations and many of those free trial deals are now expiring.
But with Quibi’s sheer volume of content, its submissions for the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be vast across three short form genre categories, as well as in the short form actor and actress categories. It’s also making a play for the character voice-over performance and original music and lyrics fields.

Quibi is not just another streaming service offering a stable of original programming. It sets itself apart from all of the competition because it features mobile content designed to be consumed in “quick bites.” Developed by former studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg and executive Meg Whitman, the streamer has attracted a bounty of A-list talent to its high-quality series and specials across a number of genres including dramas, comedies, reality and variety.
See Quibi’s ‘Dishmantled’ is a must-see for everyone who loves Tituss Burgess, cooking shows and blowing ‘some s*** up’
Given the impressive talent quotient and slick production values featured on its platform, expect to see a bunch of its series and specials up for Emmy nominations this year in the relatively new expanded short form categories. One drama that might attract the most attention come Emmy time is “Most Dangerous Game,” starring Liam Hemsworth as a down-on-his-luck real...

Exclusive: Chrissy Teigen is heading back to the bench. Quibi has picked up a second season of Chrissy’s Court, the courtroom comedy reality series starring and executive produced by Teigen.
“The verdict is in!!! Since there is no shortage of petty disagreements to judge, we’re back for a second season!!,” said Teigen.
In each episode of Chrissy’s Court, Teigen reigns as the “judge” over one small claims case. The plaintiffs, defendants, and disputes are real, as Chrissy’s mom turned “bailiff”, Pepper Thai, maintains order in the courtroom. Teigen’s decisions are final and binding.
Chrissy’s Court hails from Teigen’s Suit & Thai Productions, 3 Arts Entertainment and Alfred Street Industries, the production company founded by Project Runway producers Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz. Teigen, Luke Dillon, Dan Cutforth, Jane Lipsitz, Dan Volpe, and Mason Steinberg executive produce.

At the beginning of each episode of Quibi’s wild “Dishmantled” food competition series, host Tituss Burgess punches a big red button to activate a cannon that splatters a pair of chefs from head-to-toe with a mysterious dish.
The chefs then have to re-create the meal that was blasted at them based on taste and touch, before presenting their effort to Burgess and a panel of guest judges. The series is a six-minute smash in the face of food, color and craziness.
Just as the dishes of pesto pasta and shepherd’s pie are de-constructed for the chefs to figure out, traditional unscripted programming has been taken apart and put back together in increasingly creative, but also off-kilter, ways.
And it’s not just competition programs such as “Dishmantled” getting this larger-than-life treatment in a quest to draw in viewers whose attention is constantly pulled in a million new directions.

Quibi is the latest streaming service offering original programming, but this one is different: it features strictly mobile content designed to be consumed in “quick bites.” The short form shows on Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman‘s platform all include A-list names and impressive production values, just like you’d see on other channels. But there’s a twist. Instead of sitting through a 60-minute episode of, say, “Top Chef,” you can watch Quibi‘s cooking competition “Dishmantled” in only 6 minutes. That’s shorter than it took me to write this paragraph.
Tituss Burgess hosts this outlandish reality show, in which mystery food dishes are shot out of a cannon at blindfolded chefs, who then have to recreate them in 30 minutes. “Y’all ready to watch me blow some s*** up?” Burgess coyly asks in the series premiere. Each episode’s $5,000 prize is awarded to the chef who correctly tastes...

Exclusive: Quibi has made its first series-renewal announcement. The weeks-old shortform digital outlet has ordered up a second season of Dishmantled, its Tituss Burgess-hosted cooking-competition show from Chopped creator Linda Lea, Good Egg Entertainment and Propagate-owned Electus.
Each episode of Dishmantled starts with the cannon-blasting of a mystery food dish into the faces of two blindfolded chefs. They use their culinary prowess to identify the exploded dish and then race against the clock to re-create it to pocket a cash prize. A panel of celebrity judges determines the winner.
“The first season of Dishmantled was ludicrous,’ Lea said. ‘We had so much fun making this crazy show and can’t wait to get back in the studio with Tituss for another season. It’s going to be a blast.”
Drew Buckley serves as exec producer for Electus

The four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are pretty obsessed with food and so, it turns out, is the director of their most recent big screen outing.
Dave Green, who helmed 2016’s “Tmnt: Out of the Shadows,” is teaming up with actor Joe Cobden (“Fargo”) to create a food-based sketch comedy series at Quibi.
The project is called “Toothpix” and hails from “Tim & Eric Awesome Show” producers Abso Lutely and “Chef’s Table” production house Supper Club. Based on the Instagram account of the same name, the show is set entirely in the world of celebrity chefs, restaurants and influencer culture, and aims to celebrate the absurdities of the food world.
“Toothpix” is being produced by Josh Cohen and Dave Kneebone for Abso Lutely, and David Gelb, Brian McGinn, and Jason Sterman for Supper Club.
Green was recently tapped to direct Warner Bros.’ live action-animation hybrid Wile E. Coyote movie, as Variety reported exclusively.
