The writing, directing, etc. are standard Christmas movie pablum. Not awful but pretty unoriginal. The chemistry between the two leads make it watchable. In particular the lead actress was a fresh face and good actress. Hope she gets a chance with better material some day.

Liar, Liar with a Christmas dating app

This movie was listed by my provider as "A Date by Christmas Eve" and that title appeared on screen. The alternate title "The Naughty List" probably describes it better.
This isn't a common Christmas premise, but it is a pretty solid mix of two older Christmas movies with much better leads and acting in general. "I'm Not Ready for Christmas" with Alicia Witt has the can't-lie angle. "Naughty or Nice" with Hilarie Burton has the Santa's magic list angle. On the other side of this movie is one I just watched yesterday "A Christmas Crush". The last made this one look excellent. The similarity of this one with "Wish" is the magic wish on a potential boyfriend, especially the result on said "boyfriend".
I mention "Crush" because it is an example of doing really badly what this movie mostly succeeds at. This movie has some exaggerated humor, but doesn't let the acting or story get out of control like "Crush" did. This movie does the story pretty well with controlled overacting. In that sense it is similar to "Ready" and "N or N". The difference in the three is the acting, especially the leads. Both Witt and Burton have much better comedic timing. They both probably had better lines to work with also.
Bear in mind that this movie is about magic and it intentionally uses some exaggeration, so judging the acting is a little different than the standard Hallmark or Lifetime pure Christmas Romance.
I really liked the implied message about magic which is a cover for what we as people think in our hearts about other people. In a good Magic story, magic has a cost, or better, a consequence. Chelsea really learns that.
Fisher is the paragon, at least mostly. Chelsea is a bit wimpy but at her roots is honest and giving.
While the premise isn't the usual Christmas movie fare, the audience still has a pretty good idea what's coming. The ending here is decent enough.

This film is definitely aimed at a younger film audience, based on its secondary story and the cast as a whole. It does deliver to some degree, but is almost a complete rip off of another story about the 12 wishes of Christmas or something like that.
The lead guy is cute in his way and the bonus with him is that you could use his ears to pick up satellite wherever you are. I always liked having something to hold on to. Vanessa (Sugar Motta from 'Glee') actually does a great job in the lead female role, it's just a shame that the story and directing don't support her to show her full potential. It's not a serious story. The 'Boyfriend' Rod, is a terrible actor. The best friend is one of those annoying millennials that takes a selfie every five minutes and Morgan Fairchild would not be my first choice as Mrs Kringle, she can't even smile properly with all that work she's had done! So overall, not a great supporting cast, maybe that's why Vanessa Lengies? shines?
I might watch it again in a few years time, so I'm not saying it's awful, but it's easier to pick faults than to see the good things. Oh yeah, I've just remembered, she has a great wardrobe in it, some lovely dresses.

This review probably sounds like it comes from somebody that loves hating on Lifetime Christmas films. That couldn't be further from the truth, this is coming from somebody who aims to be encouraging with their reviewing and is mostly generous. Have actually said quite a number of times that Lifetime showed a lot of times that they had a good film in them, although there was a lot of average and less output too. This review is not coming from a Scrooge either, my adoration of Christmas is probably well known by now.
2019 was very hit and miss for Lifetime's Christmas output, very like their previous years. 2020 was also hit and miss for them too, Christmas and overall. Some were pleasantly well above average and others were mediocre at best. Very like their output in general as indicated in the above paragraph. To me, 'A Date by Christmas Eve' (alternate title 'The Naughty List') is one of their worst from that year. Not unwatchable but very weak, compensated by the two lead performances but doesn't have much else going for it.
Am going to get the good things out of the way. As said, 'A Date by Christmas Eve' is saved from unwatchability by the above decent and actually quite appealing lead performances of Vanessa Lengies and Evan Williams. Lengies is suitably perky and Williams is a sensitive and charming partner. Their chemistry comes over as very genuine and amiable, looking at ease with each other.
Did think that the scenery is quite nice.
Otherwise, 'A Date by Christmas Eve' has nothing really to recommend it. The rest of the acting is poor, especially from a truly obnoxious Taylor Frey. Morgan Fairchild looks ill at ease too. None of the supporting characters engaged or appealed, especially the obligatory boyfriend stereotype that often in Christmas films comes over as too much of a jerk and very unpleasant. Which is exactly how the character of Rod comes over. Apart from the scenery, the film doesn't look too great. Too drab and like it was made in haste.
Mostly the music is forgettable at best and has no personality. The script is too cheesy and schmaltzy, constantly sounding awkward and the story is excessively dull, due to trying to pad out half an hour's worth of content to feature length, and has an overload of credulity straining moments that makes it ridiculous. The film feels too thin, has very little warm or charm and has an ending that is obvious from the start.
In conclusion, weak. 3/10.

A Date For Christmas Eve? - I'd Be Happy With A PlayStation.

Greetings, salutations, and a seasonal welcome to all you movie aficionados. Here are my considerations and recommendation for A Date By Christmas Eve.
Story: 1.50/2 - Direction and Pace: 2.00/4 - Performances: 1.25/2 - Enjoyment: 1.50/2

If you wanna fall in love by Christmas Eve, well, there's an app for that! And the thanks for that incredible software go to Julie McNiven, who stole the idea from her colleague Chelsea Simms. But Chelsea doesn't need to worry, some people know about the injustice. One of whom is Mrs Kringle, who bestows Chelsea's app with a smidgen of Elfen Santa Magic - The glamour to award Christmas gifts to nudge people back onto the Nice List. But of course, with great power comes blah, blah, blah. You know the given gifts will return to her double and triple fold. And luckily for the viewer, the writer and director, Jake Helgren, utilises these to add humour, unveil truths, and build characterisations: It's one reason the story works so well. Helgren is an outstanding scribe. He develops fascinating characters and gives them witty and heartfelt dialogue. I especially adored the segment where Rod, Chelsea's beau, proposes to her because of the gift she bestowed upon him. It works brilliantly, not just because of the writing, but all the performers are on point, their delivery is spot on for the comedic elements, and Helgren's cinematography adds the cherry to the icing on Rod's proposal cake.
As I stated, the acting is excellent, and all the performers deliver their portrayals flawlessly. It's a shame that a few characters are a tad on the stereotypical side, but the actors and actresses make up for their conventionality. For example, Rod is Mr Perfect, but Taylor Frey adds a slight campiness and overcooks the character to raise laughs, and it works. Plus, it was nice to see Morgan Fairchild again, this time as Mrs Kringle - she looks great for her age.
Though Helgren films the story in a predominantly conventional style, he adds the odd pleasing composition and subtly different camera angles. The more pedestrian filming allows the performers to shine and the story to unfold. However, I would've liked a little more of the heart-warming atmosphere, which comes and goes.
But, as it stands, A Date For Christmas Eve was a highly entertaining pleasure to watch. Therefore, I wholeheartedly recommend the movie for your viewing pleasure this season of goodwill.

A few years ago Hallmark released a film called "Mingle All the Way" about a woman who invented a dating app to find a date for Christmas parties. This Lifetime film, "A Date By Christmas Eve," is similar but with a twist. This time the app is magically enchanted by Mrs. Clause to cause matches to change their personality as you request in the app.
This begs the question, how does Mrs. Clause enchant an app? Does her magic rewrite the programing of the main character's app as it functions on her smartphone. Is the app's source code permanently altered? The film doesn't mention any of this information but it is fun to think about. More Christmas films need silly premises like this to keep our interest in the generic love stories they show us.
This film also features a solid cast of Vanessa Lengies and Evan Williams as the main characters. Lengies is an actor I haven't seen before, which is a shame because she is really good here. She's very personable despite the lack of range she has. Thankfully, she isn't asked to do much with this role. Williams is perfectly cast as the sensitive best friend who is too shy to tell her how he really feels. Neither actor is too attractive for the role as is unfortunately common in these films.
Lengies is Chelsea, a tech employee who develops a dating app (I think it is) with a Christmas theme. The app bears some resemblance to the real-life app called Bumble. The company employs an actor, Mrs. Kringle, to portray Mrs. Clause promoting the app. Mrs. Kringle bewitches the app which Chelsea uses to alter the personalities of several people close to her. She tries to cause her roommate to become independent and to cause her boss to admit her faults to the company president. Chelsea gets jealous when Williams's character, Fisher, gets close to a co-worker and uses the app on him. She eventually corrects everyone by right swiping them which magically returns them to their original personality.
This film is weird and silly enough for me to enjoy it. Lengies is solid to carry the film through the predictable parts. I believe some of the cast was in on the joke too, especially the boss character. Congratulations to writer-director Jake Helgren for finally producing a holiday film that is tolerable after his horrible "A Merry Christmas Match" and "A Dog Walker's Christmas Tale."

There's nothing to like. Tacky storyline, predictable plot, un-amusing actors and feeble attempts at Christmas-afying already 'done' tropes like 'can't lie' and 'make him love me'.
Unless you're 12 and love the idea of love at Christmas, give this a miss. If you're on the couch desperate for something to watch, invest your time reading the back of a shampoo bottle instead.

Wow! I would have given this movie 0/10 if I could. Alot of the 2019 lifetime christmas movies this season were really good with great actors and actresses but this was one of their worst out of all 28 this season. The main lead actress and her blonde ditzy friend were painful to watch. It literally felt like pulling teeth and like you were at an improv class where no one knew how to act. The movie didnt flow at all. They played background music like they do in all movies to go along with what's happening and it didnt even match up to the acting because they couldnt even act! I made it about half way through. I kept thinking this has to get better but it never did. I mean they couldnt act to save their life. I'm not trying to sound mean but the acting was so forced and it was so so SOOO bad! All their other incredible movies theyve had this season like merry liddle Christmas & a christmas winter song & random acts of Christmas & twinkle all the way & staging christmas & christmas in Louisiana and a christmas wish were all incredible movies and a few others and they flowed along with the storyline and the movie flowed but this was beyond forced. No one in the movie could act. Period. One of the worst movies I've seen in a REALLY long time.

The Naughty List (alternatively titled a Date By Christmas Eve) is essentially your standard "magic wishes with good intentions gone wrong" movie. If you're a fan of made of TV Christmas movies, you're familiar with the premise
Chelsea, the main character, is working to develop and market a new dating app (Naughty or Nice). Mrs Clause, thought to be an actor hired by the marketing company but actually the real deal, enchants the app which allows Chelsea to make wishes to put her friends and rivals on the naughty or nice list and change their personalities accordingly
Along the way, her app idea and job promotion are stolen from her, she gets dumped, she ignores the obvious crush her best friend Fisher has on her and gets annoyed with her clingy best friend Keegan. She makes wishes to fix all of this stuff and it backfires as expected. She then has to learn the real meaning of Christmas and make things right.
Lifetime has, in recent years, adopted the Hallmark formula for Christmas movies - putting out dozens of cookie cutter and predictable but enjoyable romantic comedies. As with Hallmark, and now GAC, the movies are a mixed bag. Some are truly great, some truly awful, most in between. If you're a fan of the genre, this movie will probably be "in between" although perhaps closer to the bottom of your list depending on how much the core premise interests you.
The two leads do a good job and keep the movie afloat with their solid performances and good chemistry. Nothing else in the movie stands out as especially good, although there isn't much especially bad stuff here either.
I'm not a huge fan of "magical" hallmark/lifetime movies, the supernatural element always comes off as especially corny and cliche so this one isn't one I would rewatch but it's a perfectly mediocre entry into the genre . There are a number of much better Lifetime movies in the recent years though

The first temptation was to define it as...chaotic. Or improvised. But I loved the touch of fairy tale and I prefered to ignore the large circle of mistakes , from construction of story to acting.
So, the only problem is the waste of potential.
Nice ideas, bizarre used. Morgan Fairchild as more than eccentric Mrs Kringle and Evan Williams working hard with the good guy who he acts. And the poor Vanessa Lengies... .
