Good Story...but really pretentious
shuvamdasgupta21 March 2020
A good ending. But the reason it is not a good sequel is because there is a gap in the storyline of Baishe Srabon and this movie. It felt like the director never planned for the second movie when he made the first one. The first one came organically to him and that is why it will always be one of the good Bengali movies. The second film is something that the director made may be under compulsion or may be just to make a sequel. So the sequel did not work for me. Anirban's acting is like he is acting on stage and is not natural. But rest of the actors are good.

A bad film which is good enough
arghadeepmisra24 January 2020
Being an aspiring Filmmaker I watched this movie little differently. First of all the story is 10/10 no doubt. But the Screenplay is dense near the end (as like 22 e srabon ). Being a non-linier playscript it is heavily disoriented throughout the movie. Editing and Colors have their flaw 100% but it didn't looked too bad or like the director (Srijit) forced it to be what called different. Some parts of the movie is shamelessly influenced by foreign directors (Todd Phillips). The cinema is all the way on the shoulder of "22 e srabon" which gave it an advantage in the first place in the proof of that Srijit puts a big chucks of 22 e srabon in this film. Although it's an "True sequel" but it felt like he was using 22 e srabon as a nostalgia to make us like this film which is awkward and at the same time silly. At the end as a job of a director Srijit Mukherjee did a normie or as we call it as average job,but due to the strength of the story he hardly balanced it to be a good film. And why I am praising only about the story is, when you get out of the theater, the only thing that would stuck in your matter is one and only the story but nothing else. Although in the first hour there's a bunch of sprouts that should enjoy the audience. Dialogues are balanced and little bended towards psychology as it should in the sequel but it is good, not more & not less than being godd. The acting is impeccable just impeccable. And the Cinematography is okaish. The film should get a 5.5 to 6 out of 10 in my consciousness but the overall film is not that bad.

Stupid ending, not expected from Srijit
sadmanshiper22 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Lack of coherence aside, I was actually enjoying the movie. It was going good, not great. But at the end, everything was ruined with a complete rewrite of the character. It's super dumb way to do a plot twist

The blaring overshadow of baishe srabon
arnab-1851331 January 2020
To be very truthful the plot was twisted but little, babul supriyo character was thrown in all of a sudden then taken out as quickly, his talent remained underutilized and finally the weak script overshadowed by the milestone created by baishe srabon. It is a fair TV movie, that's it.

Great Twist ......
abir-3973831 January 2020
Watch the movie without the expectation to surpass your experience of watching 22se srabon. Script is okay type..dialogues are good.....finding of this story is 'why'(instead of finding 'who' in 22se srabon.) Acting is very good...ritabroto , anirban & param have done exceptional job. As this is the sequel of "22se srabon",everywhere you will be directed to the flashback, which seems to be little repeatative at times..(specially for the keen watchers of 22se srabon). The twist at the end is the real surprise for viewers...good job done by srijit....though naked portray of homosexuality content could have been avoided at the last scene. What can happen between two lovers(irrespective of gender) is well known. Last but not the least ,"prabir da"we miss u a lot.

Unplanned sequel failed miserably!
mitrajtrath3 July 2020
It didn't start that bad, infact good enough.Action chases in the beginning were well shot somehow eventually started losing its momentum. The last 20-25 minutes were painfully unbearable.Making changes to an already existing character just for the sake of a plot twist is simply pointless.

A disaster
emailmadhurimasen5 April 2020
This sequel to 'Baishe Srabon' is not just a disaster in itself but also manages to ruin the first film. Could the story be any more ludicrous? Cringe-worthy and violent, it has no trace of a plot. What is the point of this sequel? It's high time that Srijit Mukherjee stops stealing scenes and storylines from others, and ceases to think of himself as Christopher Nolan or Satyajit Ray.

Unexpected twist and scary thrill
debrupdey2 May 2020
A big comeback of avijit pakrashi and co. after 9 years with the hands of Srijit Mukherjee. The straight drive of Sachin, Disco dancer of Mithun , stuttering of SRK and thriller of Srijit Mukherjee creates a great signature in the mind of people. The first half of the movie, 'Dwitio Purush' is quite slow. Though the acting of Ritobrata as 'khoka' is marvellous in the first part . But to match the story of 'Baishe Shrabon' to its sequel , Srijit has to be suffered a lot. Babul as Prabir Roychowdhury is very weak. And the dialogue and the gravity of Bumbada as Prabir was so good that the expectation of acting from 'vaat daal', i.e. Abhijit was too high but as a perfect follower, that doesn't suit him properly. Raima is quite tolerable. But the story of marriage life through the songs of Anupam Ray is good. 'Biriyani', i.e. Abir for a small part is also good. The absence of Bumbada is managed partly by the extraordinary acting of Anirban. The twist in the last scene of Srijit is just like the last six of Dhoni in the world cup. This 'chicken chowmin' tastes like biriyani only by the twist of the story, it recovers all the discripencies of the first scene. Different looks and character of Ritobrata and Anirban is really memorable.

Not equal to the level of Baishey Srabon
amarufa-923903 August 2020
I should say one thing,we always like to see unexpected things happenning in the ending of a thriller movie.... but there is a little gap between probable unexpectedness and quite impossible unexpectedness...this is where the film went wrong...again the finding process of Khoka was just too much simple...the middle part of thrilller film will be like the middle game of Mikhail Tal....but it just kept on showing other things becoming a bit indiffernt to the murders...something like the position that an old man gets in a house!

A plot with no sense at all

A fail attempt to make a sequel with greater twist & over imagination with total blunder. Ending twist makes the overall plot self contradictory.

Intense plot with not so great execution
pritambag29 April 2020
The pick up tone of the film was very much unique. And the plot too developed in an intense manner. But somehow if the end was kept open and left for the audience it would have been the highest grossing film and plot itself would have created a lot of fanbase. But somehow the introduction of some bizzard logics related to mental health issues went over my mind. I was disappointed by the ending. But the performances were great including Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Anirban Bhattacharya and Rwitobrata Mukherjee.

A Tired Approach of an Overcrowded Mind
I think I've been following Srijit Mukherjee's films for quite sometime infact from the very beginning if I'm exact. "Autograph", "Baishe Srabon", "Jaatishwar" , "Rajkahini" and "Gumnaami" were, I believe, among his finest creations. He is definitely one of the flag bearer of the so called phrase "bringing commerce and art together". So, obviously he's one of the very important filmmakers in Bengali cinema in the last decade. Not the greatest but definitely important. But the thing is in Bengali Film Industry, as I've observed, the more you're successful the more you have to churn out movies each year. And also there is a lack of diverse filmmakers in Bengali cinema unlike what we see in the south. Lately, Srijit Mukerjee is creating 3-4 movies every year and so are many other notable filmmakers in the industry. This creates an impact on the quality. Now if we take this movie "Dwitiyo Purush", it feels like a very tired creativity from the Director. Why ?-

1. The Writing is very weak. The biggest strength of any movie especially for a mystery thriller is its level of engagement of the audience. It has to play with their mind, make them anticipate, imagine and be thrilled. I would even say that engagement is way more important than the logic of the plot (That doesn't mean the plot should be an illogical pit but little artistic liberation to crank up the intensity is welcome). But here the engagement is very less. The plot of the tumultuous marriage & romance is such a big portion. It was not unnecessary. But it felt like three glasses of water for one little bowl of dry spicy food just so you are not "confused" for what's coming.

2. A good editing can save even a poorly written story. But, the editing here is lack-lustre. There is nothing much in the plot. So it could be at least 30 mins shorter. But, things are moving at a very slow pace like there is no hurry whatsoever. See a mystery thriller is like a well-adjusted game of light & shadow. Its about the tension and curiosity it generates. This is where editing plays the key role. But, here it failed to create tension or curiosity. This is where the Spanish or the Korean Thrillers take us on a ride. Somewhere in the middle I almost forgot that it's a thriller. Baishey Srabon was way better edited.

3. The music is not at all reinventing nor does it elevates the narrative. For a viewer who is not aware of the dark alleys of Chinatown and its prevailing lawlessness, it's sure very confusing to be introduced at the light tunes of a guitar melody. This is what happened when you choose any song from the diary of your favourite musician and not show any creativity. Take for example "Udta Punjab", how remarkably we were ushered into the drug scene of Punjab through the tunes of "Chitta Ve" and some hard hitting lyrics. Hooked you from the very first scene but that was a only a black comedy.

But, there are also few good things of the movie. Acting is its biggest strength. Both Parambrata and Anirban are very good. Truly honest to their characters. Parambrata's character is tired and haunted by Probir Roy's memory and you can see that in his body language and in the final breakdown scene you can see what is eating him from inside. A very matured & Top-notch performance. Anirban on the other hand is one heck of a bold performer. Even though he's Menacing & Vulnerable but he played his part with a pinch of unpredictability and you can witness that in his quiter moments. Cinematography has some flare. Liked the way it captured the Chinatown alleys and painted the visual picture. Dialogues are pretty good but Baishe Srabon had better dialogues.

Dwitiyo Purush is thematic for sure. It's there in almost all of Srijit Mukherjee's crime thrillers & which is about the blurring lines between the psyche of law-keepers & law-breakers and how that is shaped by the system and the society in which we live. Our psychology is only a by-product of our surroundings. Which ultimately makes it a very human movie. But the execution of Dwitiyo Purush makes it a below average experience.

Brilliant story and suspense, somewhat marred by patchy direction and editing
msunando30 March 2020
Dwitiyo Purush - A juvenile criminal Khoka aspires to reign among the notorious in the underbelly of Chinatown in Kolkata. He and his gang of goons believe in graphic violence and will stop at nothing. Khoka commits three murders in his signature style, of a rival gang leader, a police informant and a fearless police officer, before being intelligently trapped and arrested by Kolkata Police.

Cut to 25 years since then. Khoka (Anirban Bhattacharya) returns to Chinatown after serving his jail sentence to rebuild his empire all over again, and begins by committing murders in the same pattern. So is he a serial killer and what's his motive for the repetition? Abhijit Pakrashi (Parambrata) is the investigating officer who is still haunted by the nightmares from the poet murderer case (flashback to Srijit Mukherjee's epic 22she Sraban), who starts putting the jigsaw of clues together. He also has a battle on the homefront where his marriage is on the rocks! What score does Khoka have to settle with Abhijit?

It's a brilliant story written by veteran Mani Shankar Mukherjee (Chowringhee, Seemabaddha.....) that holds up the suspense until the very last frame and you cannot not marvel at the mystery with the case. The execution is somewhat patchy, especially the editing and the super graphic violence with the murders which could well have been avoided. Director Srijit Mukherjee connects to 22she Sraban on several occasions, but Dwitiyo Purush certainly isn't its sequel. Anirban puts up a fantastic performance in the climax sequence, but comes across as trying too hard to be a hardcore criminal mouthing his dialogues mostly. Parambrata is measured and expressive. Gaurav Chakraborty is passable as his assistant, but Raima Sen is largely wasted. The climax and the revelation of the motive are cleverly crafted and worth the wait.

Twist that baffles
tanim-jubaer24 January 2021
The story is quite mesmerizing in the context of the city. However, it was too dense at the end.

I feel the useless romantic part take away the greatness of the plot by stealing screentime

Dark, Bold and Tricky
banerjeenirmalya23 January 2020
Very rarely a great film receives a fitting sequel. Well, Srijit Mukherji ' s "Dwitiyo Purush" is one such rarity. An edgy script, brilliant direction and kick-ass performances of the two leads - Parambrata and Anirban make it a must watch. The film deals with a notorious criminal Khoka (Anirban) who's back from prison after serving a long sentence. During his teenage, Khoka headed a criminal gang and tormented the area of Chinatown. He committed multiple murders and each time the victims received the inscription "Khoka" on their forehead with a sharp object. After he's set free, identical murders resurface. Is Khoka again back in his own self after such a prolong period or is there someone or something else behind this is what the now Veteran Cop Abhijit (Parambrata) and his team must find out.

It's not a conventional whodunit with twists and turns every now and then but rather a linear treatment with a gradual progression almost rendering it like a mixed genre film. Thus the sub plots like the Daal Bhat Biriyani one doesn't interrupt the flow but aids in this wholesomeness. However the film is not flawless. Music could have been a bit better. I felt the Police Department should have shown a bit more alacrity especially after the second murder.

But the one thing that really stands out is the shock value. The twist is unpredictable and fleshed out to perfection. And as the saying goes "All is well that ends well", Dwitiyo Purush passes with flying colours and adds to Mukherji's tally of successful thrillers. He's no longer Bangalir Nolan. This one makes him Bangalir Fincher too.

This is a forced sequel
samantajoy-2146520 March 2020
This has been forcefully made as sequel of "Baishe Shrabon" and if we even take it as a sequel then also it has failed drastically. Performance is poor of everyone except Parambrata and Anirban, they are kind of okay.Rather I enjoyed watching the cut scenes of Prasenjit Chatterjee from "Baishe Srabon". Story is okay but screenplay is weak and failed to create a thrilling experience.Climax is only good thing and really appreciable. Overall you can watch it single time for timepass but it is not even comparable with "Baishe Srabon"

Lack of contents & plots
itsmalay12 May 2020
It seems like Srijit Mukherji forcefully make the sequel (actually it's a prequel) of the epic "22 se Srabon"(which was a phenomenal movie). The actors acted well specially Anirban, else there is nothing which we can rejoice like other Srijit's films. Storyline, plots, suspense nothing was such impactful that you can enjoy. Overall I didn't like this film.

A class apart
rudrabanerjee-8681824 January 2020
This is a brilliant movie. The idea is fresh , the ending is unexpected, mind-blowing and quite bold. Cinematography is spot on, background score is awesome. Performances are too good. Anirban has nailed his role and so has Parambrata and Ritabrata. The only downside is if you compare this with Baishe Shrabon, it lacks plot maturity but I would say, that the comparison is not justified because the narrative and plot details are poles apart. Bengali Cinema has certainly reached a milestone after this film, specially after the climax scene. Also loved the Korean touch of violence, blood, gore and strong language used. Hats off Srijit Mukherjee. Must watch for everyone.

Yet another disastet from Srijit
roychowdhurysupratik2 February 2020
1. forget about 22 she srabon first. it was a frame to frame copy movie which was class apart among other bangla mvs of that time. 2. Ritobroto and Anirban are class actors. they show their class even with worst scripts. The only good thing about this mv is these 2 gems. 3. Story has no thrill at all. thrill factor is nil. aprt frm last 15 mins it felt like watching a star jalsha daily soap. Script is a jatrapala. no relevance, no integrity. pushing 10 slangs here n there doesnt makes it any better. and last 15 mins was a mess. 4. I am amazed by how the propaganda system works for srijit, all the online platforms and some media just showing how good the mv is, inspite of its a sub par movie. nowdays ppl watching netflix series in their mobile, hollywood mvs are releasing at the same plex with bengali mv. The competition is global. Its hurts when a promising looking director makes this nonsense as a cult sequel.

Somewhat derivative but a nice continuation
priyadarshanmaity9817 April 2020
If you loved baisher shrabon you will be somewhat disappointed with this film cause it offers nothing new in the table atleast the first 2 acts. I for one missed Prosenjit in this film which is the biggest drawback cause it should be like a continuation where everything is in a different league altogether but that's what it is missing. The start of the film is reminiscent of other crime films like city of god, Angamaly diaries so nothing new and the starting impression really disappointed me but but... You will not get bored cause there is two of the greatest actors of the Bengali film industry one is Parambrata Chatterjee and the second is anirban bhattacharjya there performance elevated the film and the thing is there is a constant jabs at crime cliches the protagonist talks about you know talking about scottland yard but the cliche they are trying to diminish is actually the fault because they fall into the trap of this same cliche. But again the ending...it will shock you and I think Srijit Mukherjee wanted to create a illusion that the first and second act was just a cliche but the end will be the game changer yeah kind of game changing but ultimately the twist was shocking but again if you finished the film and started to think about it the first and second really somewhat ruined it so the ending doesn't make any impact whatsoever. And the twist which is original... Doesn't make any sense if you think about it maybe it will make sense but the whole thing was convoluted for worse. And the romance is lousy just like Raima Sen said in the film and her arc is tone deaf the new police officer Rajat is a dull character didn't made any impact. Overall the film is passable the technical aspects are nothing to talk about if you know Srijit da's work you know the style is similar. So watch it for the end and then think about it if it is making any sense

Destroyed the essence of the whole storyline!
SoumikBanerjee199615 May 2020
After 22e Srabon, I was anticipating a deserving sequel. I was so eager to see what Srijit Mukherjee does with the plot this time. But the only thing I got is utter disappointment. The execution here is so bad on so many levels.

The Cinematography, the Tonality of the film is nice, it sets up a pretty good vibe accordingly. The sound score has become repetitive at times. Especially whenever Anirban's Character shows up, the same sound has been used. Now I get it that was the theme track for his character. But what was the actual need for over excessive usage of the same tones over and over again?

The performances are just good. Nothing extraordinary except Anirban Bhattacharya. He is so versatile and can do different roles with ease. I hope he continues in same fashion. Parambrata was good generally but there were certain scenes where I felt him to be overreactive and over the top dramatic. That really did bother me. For such a renowned actor I don't expect such loose ends.

Now let's talk about the story and the ever debated 'Twist'. Well some might have liked it, some disliked. For me? Personally I would have love to keep it as an open ending. Rather than just giving all the explanations right away without much substance and clarity! Before the climax, the story feels dragged on so many occasions. Thanks to Some unnecessarily stretched scenes/conversations. And a relationship struggle, that never really settled on a conclusion nor did it give any essential input into the storyline. It was just there for the sake of pleasing the " Specific Fanbase".

When the twist hits, it certainly seemed clever and I was shocked at it too. At first it baffled me and more I started to think; the more it became illogical and dumb to be honest. As this is a direct sequel to '22e Srabon' many statements given towards the end made no sense at all. The explanations themselves sounded contrary to what we have already known from the previous instalment! It literally made no sense.

Overall I disliked the movie. As a thriller it was supposed to be fast paced and enthralling but instead we get a slow burner that never really left Its mark and in the end turned out to be a confusing dilemma.

Go for Dwitiyo Purush as a fresh movie don't go for the sequel of 22se Srabon.
pakkaidiot24 January 2020
Dwitiyo Purush as a lone movie will make you spell bound.. stop thinking about baishe srabon because matching the standards of 22se Srabon is a pretty tough task and happens only once in a decade. As a fresh new movie this is a top notch thriller and reinvented Parambrata Chatterjee as an actor, and of course for Anirban this film was made.
