Cynthia Cidre has been tapped to write TNT's new take on "Dallas," the first major development for the project that had been rumored for a couple of months.
The network and Warner Horizon, which is producing the series, are refusing to discuss its story line.
The initial idea was to have the series revolve around J.R. and Sue Ellen's son John Ross and Bobby and Pam's adopted son Christopher, but the studio and the network are waiting for Cidre's take on the Ewing clan and want to read her script before making a decision.
Patrick Duffy, who played Bobby in the original series, Larry Hagman (J.R.) and Linda Gray (Sue Ellen) were approached two months ago about potentially reprising their roles. There are no talks between the actors and Warner Horizon, and a rep for the studio said the three "may or may not be part of" the new series.

It's another busy development season for Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly's Sony-based TV production company, which has set up eight projects from such auspices as Elmore Leonard, Graham Yost, Michael Dinner, Barry Sonnenfeld and Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman.
What is different this year is that most of the projects are set up at cable networks.
Since its 2003 launch, Timberman/Beverly Prods. (formerly 25C) had been focused on developing for the broadcast nets, landing several pilots and a series order from NBC for "Kidnapped."
Timberman and Beverly tested the cable waters this year with the A&E pilot "Danny Fricke." Now they're hooked.
"It has opened the door to explore subject matter that we would've never thought of developing for broadcast," Timberman said.
It also helped that their company is based at Sony TV, a major cable player.

With the end of the writers strike, casting has picked up on some of the pilots ordered before and during the work stoppage.
Tim Peper has been tapped as one of the two leads in the CBS comedy pilot My Best Friend's Girl, and Bernardo De Paula has joined another NBC pilot, the comedy Zip.
On the cable side, Dorian Brown is set as a lead in the ABC Family series Roommates, while Michael Mosley has been added to A&E's drama pilot Danny Fricke.
Girl, from Sony Pictures TV and writer Mike Sikowitz, is a multicamera comedy about two male best friends who own a bike shop and whose relationship becomes complicated when one (Peper) starts dating the other's ex-wife.
Zip, also from UMS, centers on Trip Stringer (Steven Weber), a guy with no money living in Beverly Hills who, with the help of his Latino partner, Hugo (De Paula), and a colorful cast of accomplices concoct one scheme after another in the hopes of making it big and securing the glamorous Beverly Hills lifestyle for his three children.

A&E Network has handed out a cast-contingent pilot order to the scripted drama Under from Gary Randall and Nancy Miller. Fox Television Studios has come on board to produce.
The project, created by Charles Murray, was first announced in May as part of A&E's scripted development slate. It centers on a young thug who, after being marked for death by the mob and turning state's evidence against them, joins the witness protection program. He becomes an NYPD patrolman but is unable to escape his past.
Murray also wrote the pilot. Randall and Miller will executive produce.
The pickup comes on the heels of A&E's recently announced cast-contingent pilot orders for Danny Fricke and The Beast, both from Sony Pictures TV, and The Cleaner, from CBS Paramount.
A&E is looking for scripted drama projects that will complement its other programming, particularly such acquired series as The Sopranos and CSI: Miami. Senior vp drama programming Tana Nugent Jamieson recently said the intention is to premiere one scripted series in early summer 2008 -- marking the network's first original drama series since 2002 -- and possibly a second series after that.

A&E Network has handed out cast-contingent pilot orders to two scripted series projects tentatively titled The Beast and The Cleaner.
The pickups follow on the heels of the recently announced cast-contingent pilot order for Danny Fricke.
Beast, from Sony Pictures Television, is executive produced by Allan Loeb and Steven Pearl for Scarlet Fire Films (New Amsterdam) and Cory Concoff (Beltway) for Fuel Filmworks. The project centers on an unorthodox but effective FBI veteran who trains a new partner in his hard-edged, psychologically clever style while being pursued by a secret Internal Affairs team.
The script was written by William Rotko (Breach, Beltway) and Vincent Angell (Stand by Love), who also will serve as co-executive producers.
Cleaner, from CBS Paramount Network Television, is written and executive produced by Robert Munic (For Life) and Jonathan Prince (Cane).
The project, based on a real-life extreme interventionist, centers on William, a man who feels that helping others is his calling. After hitting rock bottom during the birth of his twins, William strikes up a tentative deal with God, kicks his addictions and dedicates his life to helping others do the same.
