Disappointing
razbgd29 December 2023
Being a Southern Slav myself,I looked forward to this show.

The show takes place in Pannonia,so it must be about us,Southern Slavs, namely Serbs and Croats. Or I expected and hoped it to be.. But...the language is wrong, the names are wrong, the customs are wrong, even the racial characteristics are wrong-we are known to be blond or red haired, blue or green eyed at that point of our history, but most of the people in the show are dark haired and have dark eyes.. Even the synopsis is wrong-"before the union of Slavic tribes". There was no union of Slavic tribes in the 7th century AD in our parts,we were just Serbs and Croats, with some minor "tribes" that lived among and along us.

I don't know what was the purpose of making historicaly inaccurate show, except maybe for making money.

Word to the creators-next time when you decide to make a show about our history, ask us,don't presume you know about our customs just because you are Slavic too. Sorry, but you are the wrong kind of Slavs to make a show about us.

Show with great potential, but badly executed
Gelaos27 September 2021
Slovania definitely had potential (at least when compared to other Slovakian production) and I commend the authors for trying to come up with something new in Slovakian TV.

Unfortunately, all the potential and positives are overshadowed by immensely stupid and chaotic writing, dysfunctional pacing, horrible dialogues and - mostly - bland direction. Actors are trying but there's really not much place for good acting, because most of the characters doesn't have any development throughout the season.

Cinematography is limited by TV budget, music often doesn't fit to what's shown, though some tracks are nice.

Overall Slovania is a disapointment. With better direction and writing it could be a little proud Slovakian Game of Thrones. Sadly, it isn't.

Opportunity missed

The trailers looked great so whilst I came to it open minded, I had reasonably high expectations to be entertained or at least teased to continue watching. After watching the first episode, I regret to admit that I was neither. I didn't expect it to be like GoT or Vikings, which seems to have been a common complaint by some of the viewers (I liked neither - stopped watching GoT after S1E4 and couldn't even finish the first ep of Vikings - I was just bored). What it could have been? I don't really mind. Just tell a decent story and create a drama that holds interest. I was bored throughout, and I was forcing myself to finish watching it to give it a chance. In today's environment with severe competition by international channels, Netflix, HBO etc, a new series needs to hit the ground running. There needs to be a twist, a hook or something why viewers want to watch. Breaking Bad starts with Walt waving a gun in the New Mexico desert in his underpants, a teaser of things to come, House of Cards with Kevin Spacey killing a dog in front of his house making a philosophical point and showing his character. Gomorrah has a couple of gangsters burning down an enemy boss' apartment. Etc etc etc. For me there was nothing alike here. The end of episode one does have a development but it is so obvious before the scene what will happen and is delivered in such a lukewarm fashion (and censored) that I just couldn't really care or get excited by it.

Firstly, it is clear that the direction, camera and actors tried. The production value is high, money was spent, visuals are beautiful and acting is not bad either. Having a TV seris about Slavs is desirable. There is a big gap in the market of all the Vikings, Germans, Romans et al. The problem is the script. The intro dialogue between the herbalist girl and one of the young protagonists is naive and contrived. Like every Slovak fairytale, there is an unpleasant stepmother who will try to marry off the protagonist girl to some inappropriate suitor. Cliches abound. Since it needs to appeal to the broadest spectrum of the miniscule Slovak viewing market, all the controversial parts are censored (sex and violenc). The sex scene didn't show anything and was contrived, embarrasing and absolutely not sexy. I am personally not a fan of sex scenes unless they are absolutely necessary for the type of the film or for the story, but here whilst there was logic to it there was no credibility to it. The violent scenes were also censored. For me episode one just doesn't know what this series actually wants to be. I am open to anything. Just give us a good story, tension and drama. So far they are absent.

A huge disappointment

I expected a good series from TV JOJ (as some before), but I couldn't watch the first part to the end.

Very bad performance of actors, a weak regie, 0 atmosphere.

The way this show catches the feel of the era is brilliant! It's mixed with a deep dive into Slavic culture and traditions, definitely enjoyed it so far.

Not available to everyone
filipzavoda28 October 2023
This show aired in 2021. Now is 2023. I still can't watch it anywhere and there are no more than 2 episodes available. Making a show about slavs and their culture and mythology but making it available only in USA when it comes to other countries except the ones who made the show is weird I'm not sure what you wanted to achieve by that but I guess some people will never get the chance to see the show. I am of Slavic ethnicity and I was very hyped when I heard about the show but it is what it is I guess life is unfair. If you're gonna make a show about some ethnicity's history atleast make it available for everyone and not just USA.

Finally a solid alternative to Vikings

The picture work, story, actors, environment, simply amazing. The only disadvantage I see, there is no English translation, which would be much deserved.

Beautiful!

The way that our history is oresented is amazing and has its own charm. Finally a series about our story and not american storytales. The believes that our ancestry had, the life they lived is presented in interesting and easy to watch way. Much from what I espected. Proud to watch a series like this. No need for critics they may not look like the tipical slavs people but show us everything we need to know about our past life and the way we handled the situatuations like fight and bad liders. Showed us that we are not only phisically strong but strong in mind and mentally. Hope to see the future of Samo, Draga and the slavs. Definitely recommend to watch.
