Hit-and-Miss
rubendh18 September 2021
I must start this review by clarifying that I originally starting watching this series in mid-July, but I wasn't able to finish it until now due to force majeure reasons. Still, I'll give my personal opinion about it. Although "Mr. Mayor" is not a great masterpiece of series, it isn't trash either as some imply, since it's a good satire of what has become 21st century' politics and issues today, especially in the United States. Nonetheless, I have to flag some aspects.

Although the series creators made a good formula that kept me entertained most of the time generally speaking, I felt that its execution was kinda rocky. In the characters' aspect, while they are interesting enough and had a good interaction between them and with the audience, there's still a lot to do regarding their individual development. As for the comedy factor, it was both a hit and miss, because although there were jokes that managed to pull me some chuckles, other were so goofy and cringy that practically failed.

In the end, while "Mr. Mayor" is a quite OK series with a lot of potential to offer, it requires significant improvements in the writing and humor for Season 2 if it wants to continue in the TV's major leagues for more time. The question is: I would tune Season 2 when it is released? The answer is yes.

Season one was much better
darth-moose7210 May 2022
I thought season one was great. I normally find Ted danson very funny...season 2 was a major dispontment. I stopped watching after about epp 4. They need to get the writers from season one back.

Ted Danson is fantastic, some poor writing though
JuanSolo09 January 2021
UPDATE

Despite the pilot being awful, I decided to watch the next two episodes. These were much better and makes me think they got in some new writers after the show was approved.

It's not amazing but is much better and hopefully they continue to improve it.

---

I saw this and thought this looks like a great show, Ted Danson is a fantastic actor, while despite trying to carry the show, the writing is awful, trying to be overly woke while failing at almost anything comedic. I laughed in the pilot a couple times and they were light chuckles. Hardly a comedy. I also noticed some really poor video editing in scenes showing it was quite rushed. Not sure why there are some 9/10 reviews on here, are they the writers?

This will be cancelled in no time unless they sack the writers and get this show fixed. It's a great concept, just let down by the awful writing.

Fresh. Different. Smart. Sarcastic. Goofy. Slapstick. Relatable. Feel good. Great cast. Random.

Pro tip: watch stoned

Good Start

As always, Ted Danson is great in his role as goofy mayor. Bobby Moynihan is very funny as his assistant. Not very much character depth after the first two episodes but believe there are better episodes to come.

30 Rock vibes
christie-2153614 April 2021
This show gives off major 30 Rock vibes with ridiculous head shaking humor. I agree with other reviews that the first 1-2 episodes aren't great, but the show really hits it's stride after that. Holly Hunter deserves an award for her acting as the cooky, ultra progressive character Arpi. Overall not a perfect show, but a fun watch.

This is what comedy has come to?

I could barely make it through the first two episodes before turning off the TV. I can't believe people think this is funny. The jokes don't hit at all, the characters are very stereotypical, and the mayor's daughter is nauseating. This show won't last longer than season 1.

Gets better with every episode
sbridge7515 January 2021
Ignore all the conservative snowflakes mad because the show is "all about diversity" (seriously, this angers you?). It definitely has Tina Fey's sensibility so if you enjoy 30 Rock or Kimmy Schmidt you'll like this. As with most sitcoms you can tell it's taking it a bit to find its footing, but things definitely are starting to click by the third episode. Ted Danson is a treasure!

Funny in a 30Rock vein
VisionExile12 January 2021
Decent rapid-fire comedy with a stream of consciousness pathway of laughs. Loose and sometimes free-associating jokes that can indeed be hard to follow. But, that can also lead to strange and unexpected new humor that is rarely seen on most normal comedies. A fan of 30Rock or Arrested Development would enjoy this show.

The framework of Los Angeles mayoral politics serves well to illustrate the absurdities of modern big-city life. Political correctness and confusion provide nice fodder for Tina Fey's excellent brand of (sometimes awkward or cringeworthy) humor. Ted Danson as aged establishment straightman is a nice familiar casting. Good to have a clueless father figure to bounce jokes off of. It will be interesting to see how the youthful characters are humbled by wit and wisdom. The show does seem to have some nice possibilities.... Hopefully it doesn't become a crusade for social justice or teachable moments or anything more than a platform for stupid, but deceptively sharp, jokes.

Quirky but Funny
Johnny_West31 July 2021
I enjoy Ted Danson in almost anything he does. Holly Hunter in this show does a really good job of being the Yin to Danson's Yang. They often do not look like they are going to mesh, but then they pull it off.

This is the kind of show were all the actors have comedy bits to add, and you never know who is going to do it. It is a fun show to watch, because you just sit back and see what happens.

Gets better after the first episode
dswhitcomb15 January 2021
I watched the first episode and was kind of disappointed as I loved 30 Rock and Kimmy Schmidt. But I gave Mr. Mayor another chance and it got better in the next two episodes. The pacing and humor was more Kimmy Schmidt than 30 Rock but it is funny. There is some meta humor I appreciate and the puns are shining through. Give this series a chance. Even The Office needed 6 episodes or so to find its footing. I think this could be the same case.

Solid sitcom

Danson and Hunter are great, it's also nice to see the left make fun of itself. I think current SNL cast members should take note from alum Tina Fey-the writer/creator of the show did it right

Wanted: comedians
willz1874 May 2021
Cast isnt comedically strong enough. Holly Hunter??? Ted Danson is normally surrounded by a great cast be it Cheers, Bored to Death or Good Place. Falls flat. I prefer Great News that has slightly better casting from some of the 30 Rock producers. Or Veep.

It's about time
idearz-429-6381758 January 2021
Finally, a show I actually can laugh out loud to. I was thinking, where are all the funny shows? Seinfeld, Cheers, The Office, Fraser. There is absolutely nothing funny on TV anymore. This show has the promise of filling that slot. Great cast, biting humor, what more could you want? And thank you for going without the canned laughter tracks. It didn't go unnoticed.

Ted Danson has the Midas touch when it comes to comedy or drama series
Ed-Shullivan8 January 2021
Ted Danson may be 73 years old but he shows once again that he is a veteran of television and deserves the big star on his name over the theater marquee. I think this new comedy series will be especially appreciated by anyone gainfully employed in civic politics who thinks their elected officials are breathing air belonging to someone else. Ted Danson who plays retired Los Angeles businessman and millionaire Neil Bremer decides to run for Mayor of Los Angeles just to impress his daughter and he is shocked to win the job.

The ensemble cast is supported by Saturday Night Live former cast members such as Rachel Dracht, and Bobby Moynihan, the creepy looking munchkin Holly Hunter (what happened to you Holly?) who the Mayor makes Deputy Mayor to keep his enemy closer and an eclectic cast of up and comers who believe they really run the Mayor's office and can influence his decisions which proves to be harder than they thought. Will this show survive a season one (1)? Hell yeah! Mayor Neil Bremer will definitely be running for re-election next season too!

I give it an 8 out of 10 IMDB rating.

Interesting premise with a very lackluster story line and script.
TxMike8 January 2021
I had fairly high hopes for this new TV series, I like both Ted Danson (73) and Holly Hunter (62). So last night I watched the opening episode followed by episode #2. I got halfway through that second episode when I switched to a PBS special. I watched parts of two additional episodes to confirm my initial reaction. Yes this is mostly an un-funny show with annoying characters.

Danson plays a widower with a 15 yr old daughter, a L.A. area businessman with no political savvy who jumps in and gets elected mayor of Los Angeles. Hunter is a councilwoman who comes on as his Vice Mayor. The verbal slapstick reminds me of "Schitt's Creek", a series I find impossible to watch because most characters are annoying. Danson, Hunter, and several others play very annoying characters that aren't particularly funny. It just comes across as a very inconsequential TV series.

Now I realize many TV fans really like this type of show, that's great, but for me I have zero interest in seeing additional episodes. To me it is a big opportunity wasted.

Good but needs improvement
hockeydog-7508514 January 2021
At the time of writing there are only two episodes. It has started out as a genuinely funny show but as with the first season of most sitcoms it definitely needs some improvement.

Just Awful
zombiemockingbird5 February 2021
I didn't get all the way through the pilot. The writing is awful. The characters are awful. I never laughed; I was too busy cringing. All of the jokes fell completely flat and most of them made no sense. The daughter is a screaming, whiny, harpy. Holly Hunter was horrible; I didn't even recognize her. Vella Lovell was just...odd and Bobby Moynihan's character was disgusting and gross. I really can't figure out what they were going for; it was non-sensical and just...AWFUL.

ignore the negatives
thejamespearsonmusic8 January 2021
Come on guys, what are you all thinking you're watching? This is funny, so stop taking it so seriously. This show is definitely not a 1 or 2 star show. It's entertaining, enjoyable, and Ted Danson is fantastic. Turn your brain off and don't overthink what you're watching.. It's fun, and it's meant to be entertainment. And here is a tip: If you're not entertained, watch something else....

Ted Danson does a great job in everything. Bobby Moynihan is hilarious. The show is well done, and keeps me engaged. It's quirky, silly, and not meant to be taken too seriously. I hope you enjoy the way I do, with no strings attached.

I know that it's a silly and superficial show, and definitely not the type of sitcom that I prefer to watch, but I laughed during every episode!!

How did this mess get a second season?
ianas17 March 2022
I've liked most of Dansons projects but this was a complete miss. How in the heck did NBC renew this.

After years of woke I'm immune to most of it and this one is uber woke I can forgive it what I can't forgive is lack of comedy in a situation comedy.

Please kill it and let Dansons finally retire.

Sad thing is this show is worse than the Futurama bit abot Dansons sceleton in a sitcom.

love it
v2767819 January 2021
I love this show. It's one of the funniest and wittiest shows that has come to network tv in a while. Its writing reminds me of Modern Family in many ways. Many people won't like the sarcastic and sometimes too-fast-paced humor, but that's exactly why I enjoy the show so much. I don't mind rewinding the DVR to hear a line again in order to get it. Holly Hunter is brilliant in her role.

Decent for a network sitcom
caseyhug26 February 2021
Most of the characters are just the right amount of off. However, Bobby Moynihan is enough to make me mute scenes he's in. This could be a really good show if the weird guy wasn't a character from a toddler's cartoon.
