Now that we know that racial distinctions are cultural and there is practically no biological differences between races, we can delve into the history of race and how the very concept of race was used to literally dehumanize people and justify slavery. This episode was extremely dense but it communicated everything perfectly and was very interesting. We hear about the history of pseudoscience that was used to dehumanize Black and indigenous people, juxtaposed with pictures of them where they are looking at the camera, and therefore the viewer, as a way of giving back their humanity.
Once again, more history that I wish I learned in school. Obviously I learned about slavery and the Indian Removal Act and the so-called manifest destiny when I was in school, but they never did justice to how insidious it really was. I probably learned more about slavery and manifest destiny from this episode than I ever learned in school.
